efibootmgr: Could not delete variable: Interrupted system call--- is my firmware bricked?

I'm dealing with some strange UEFI problems and right now the only thing I seem to be able to boot is openSUSE Tumbleweed on a live USB stick (KDE version, snapshot 20170608 x64).
Background: I'm dealing with a Toshiba Satellite S55t-B5233 laptop. I wanted to reinstall Windows 10, but when I installed it, it did not properly wipe the partition and I ended up with the option to boot "Windows 10" or "Windows 10" when I started up. I booted up an openSUSE live image, deleted every partition on the drive, created a new, blank EFI system partition with a FAT filesystem, and then my troubles began. I could not boot from anything, **including USB sticks that had literally worked less than an hour or so before**. Finally, I was able to boot from the openSUSE live USB after holding down the "U" key. I tried installing openSUSE to the disk, but that didn't work. I've tried a true openSUSE install image on a USB drive (not the live image), Archiso on a USB drive, the rEFInd live USB image, and a Windows 10 installer made with Rufus. None of them work—all I get is a "No bootable device -- Please restart system". (I even tried changing the MBR disk identifier of the Arch drive to match the openSUSE one. That didn't work either.) Anyway, onto my real question. (In the context of the openSUSE live environment)
efibootmgr --verbose
lists "Windows Boot Manager" as an entry in the UEFI boot options. It also specifies a file path to bootmgfw.efi, which no longer exists on the drive. When I use efibootmgr -b 3 -B
I get Could not delete variable: Interrupted system call
. The file for Boot0003 disappears from /sys/firmware/efi/efivars, and efibootmgr says that no BootOrder is set, but upon rebooting both variables return to their previous state. I think that the changes to the efivars filesystem aren't actually being written to the firmware, so does that indicate a bug with openSUSE, or does it mean a problem with the firmware?
EDIT: Using the GRUB command line, I booted into Arch Linux. The same problem continued.

I just installed Debian 8.5 CD install on my Toshiba Satellite machine, not in a VM. As it was setting up it told me that some
iwlwifi
and rtl
files were missing, but it didn't really matter as I thought I could add them later.
Using a usb stick, I downloaded [firmware-iwlwifi](https://packages.debian.org/jessie/all/firmware-iwlwifi/download) and [firmware-realtek](https://packages.debian.org/jessie/all/firmware-realtek/download) , used dpkg -i
on both and my previously empty /lib/firmware
is now populated with a lot of iwlwifi
files and a directory /lib/firmware/rltwifi
with quite a bit of rlt
files.
After reboot, ifconfig
still only listed lo
.
Downloaded and installed iwconfig
to see if I can wake up wlan0
manually, but it still didn't work.
In the [Ask Ubuntu General Room](http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/201/ask-ubuntu-general-room) they asked me the output of lsmod | grep iwlwifi
, which [showed](http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/30695065#30695065) that indeed I have the driver installed
rfkill
wasn't installed, and after installation via USB no connection was blocked, but it had found an hci0
and phy0
dmesg | grep wifi
outputs (all under [ some numbers] iwlwifi 0000:07:00.0:
):
irq 66 for MSI/MSI-X
Unsupported splx structure
firmware: direct-loading firmware iwlwifi-3160-9.ucode
loaded firmware version 23.215.9.0 op_mode iwlmvm
Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 3160, REV=0x164

L1 Disabled - LTR Enabled
output of lspci -nn | grep 0280
:
07:00.0 Network Controller : Intel Corporation Wireless 3160 [8086:08b3] (rev cb)
I don't have a desktop environment yet, so only terminal answers please, althought it is possible to set up MATE or GNOME via USB
Is there anything I'm missing? Currently browsing from an old windows machine

I'm trying to wake up my old Toshiba Satellite 1410-604 laptop (bought in 2003) cause I want to use my old 35mm negative and slide film scanner which only runs on XP. Unfortunately, when I start the laptop it asks me for a "HDD password" which I'm fairly certain it never did before. I've thrown every root and admin password at it that I remember ever having used but with no success. Has anyone succesfully dealt with a similar problem? All suggestions are welcome.

Why is my laptop's wired ethernet not showing? How can I debug this?
The installation of Debian wasn't originally on this system: it was on an older laptop whose motherboard fried, so I rescued the hard drive as well as the Debian installation. However, I doubt this should have anything to do with lspci not even detecting the wired eth controller.

EDIT: also sometimes my internet just stalls; i cannot see any packets going through when using
tcpdump
. i have to reconnect again to the wifi network for the packets to start flowing again; but i have noticed these problems after i have recently changed my provider to Sky, Uk and they have provided a router with model number, SR101
