After searching about this problem, for some people updating to 4.20 was the solution but still there are peoplefor whom this didn't work. Some solutions recommended running xinput. My results are below:
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]

    ↳ Power Button id=10	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=11	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam: USB2.0 HD id=12	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Asus WMI hotkeys id=14	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=15	[slave keyboard (3)]
The output shows id=13 as ELAN1200 touchpad. For the solutions suggested, this was wrongly set to PS/2 etc etc. But for me this value is correct. I need to solve this issue.

**[Help] Ubuntu 24.04 Random Freezes / Black Screen (ASUS N552VX - Dual Boot)** Hey folks, I'm struggling with an issue on my laptop and hoping someone can help. **Specs:** - Laptop: ASUS N552VX - CPU: Intel i7-6700HQ - GPU: Intel HD + NVIDIA GTX 950M (Optimus) - OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (X11) — dual boot with Windows 10 **Problem:** Randomly during usage, Ubuntu either freezes completely or the screen goes black. When this happens: - Keyboard/mouse stops responding - No TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F3 doesn’t work) - I can only do a hard shutdown (holding the power button) **Things I've tried:** - Full system update (sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade) - Switched to Intel GPU via sudo prime-select intel - Disabled PCIe AER errors by adding pci=noaer to GRUB - Using X11 instead of Wayland - Kernel: 6.8 (also tried 6.11 mainline) Still getting the same issue, often after some browsing or video playback. No issues under Windows. Any logs or configs I should check? Has anyone with a similar hybrid GPU setup faced this? Thanks!

I've just recycled and old Asus T100 transformer by installing a Spiral XFCE linux distro. The goal is to use it for videos. It works mostly fine, but I still have trouble for volume setting : The volume keys on the tablet do not work at all (even though it seems to have been working out of the box for some people cf http://www.jfwhome.com/2016/01/04/latest-steps-to-install-ubuntu-on-the-asus-t100ta/ ) If anybody has any idea how to fix this, it would be great ! If there is no solution to that, a way to have the keyboard volume keys work without having to press the "fn" key would be great too. I found a few ways to tweak the setting, mostly related to fnlock_default in /sys/module/asus_wmi/parameters (cf https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2247849#p2247849 ) but none of them seems to be working. Any idea ?

TLDR: I can access an external harddrive via GUI tools but not via fstab / mount tooling. I'm at my wits end with this one. I've got an external harddrive plugged into the back of my Asus router, with samba share enabled. I can access the files on it from all of my devices, android, W10, Ubuntu, Mac. I can even access it on this device, again Ubuntu, accessing the files via Kodi and the file explorer. I've also been able to connect via the smbclient package. One oddity I did notice connecting via ubuntu's file explorer is the requirement for a domain in addition to the standard username and password. It wouldn't accept it blank so I just through an 'a' in there and it connected fine. However, I've burned a good few hours now attempting and failing to mount the drive for easier access and on-boot mounting. Unfortunately, of all the forum posts I've scraped, I'm seeing nothing new, no new tricks to try so I'm offering myself to the forum gods. I've edited the /etc/fstab file with the following, see image. They're all commented out but they have been uncommented one at a time and their are other permutations that I forgot to keep for the screenshot: enter image description here From there I've been running sudo mount -a I've received many different errors while debugging, mostly #22, but now its settled on #13 Tailing the kernel log with tail -f /var/log/kern.log I see: 2025-02-22T17:38:13.145098-05:00 nous kernel: CIFS: VFS: Use of the less secure dialect vers=1.0 is not recommended unless required for access to very old servers 2025-02-22T17:38:13.145100-05:00 nous kernel: CIFS: enabling forceuid mount option implicitly because uid= option is specified 2025-02-22T17:38:13.145101-05:00 nous kernel: CIFS: enabling forcegid mount option implicitly because gid= option is specified 2025-02-22T17:38:13.145102-05:00 nous kernel: CIFS: Attempting to mount //MY-ROUTERS-IP/photos 2025-02-22T17:38:13.168078-05:00 nous kernel: CIFS: VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -13 Again, I can access the harddrive through the file explorer but can't mount it via the terminal. And for completeness a screenshot of the router's samba share settings: enter image description here Two posts that seemed the most relevant to my ametueurish eyes: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/643411/cant-mount-samba-share-cifs-mount-failed-w-return-code-13 https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/489647/cant-connect-to-smb-shared-storage-from-ubuntu-18-04

I built a machine using an [ASUS TUF GAMING B650M-PLUS](https://www.asus.com/br/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-b650m-plus/) motherboard and a Ryzen 7 8700G CPU. Linux installed with no problems, but I am missing fan control and monitoring. Under Windows, I use ASUS software to do stuff like setting fan curves and monitoring fan speeds: enter image description here enter image description here What I have tried: * pwmconfig doesn't find any fans. * sensors-detect fails to find anything but spd5118 (RAM temperature, I believe), k10temp (CPU temperature), amdgpu and NVME temperature. * [CoolerControl](https://gitlab.com/coolercontrol/coolercontrol) doesn't find any fans, either. I keep finding stuff about fan control in ASUS laptops, which isn't the case. What tools can I use under Linux to manage CPU fans? Right now, I need to reboot and enter Setup, which is very impractical.

I am trying to install an auxiliary/slave SATA hard drive on an Ubuntu PC. The new drive is 2 TB. I am able to install 1 TB drives, however when I try the new 2 TB disk, it is not recognized. At first I believed the drive to be at fault and had it replaced. The replacement behaves in the same way, making me think there's a system problem/oversight. In the BIOS, the SATA mode is set to AHCI. The other options are disabled, IDE and RAID mode. The 2tb hdd does not seem to show up in the boot options. Just what I believe is the main drive and the DVD drive. Could it be that the BIOS or Mother board do not accept 2T HDDs? The mother board is an Asus P8Z68-M Pro and the BIOS version is 0402. "sudo fdisk -l" shows only the master drive and not the second disk: Disk /dev/sdb: 931,5 GiB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disklabel type: dos Disk identifier: 0xdd82f21f Dispositivo Inicializar Start Fim Setores Size Id Tipo /dev/sdb1 * 2048 1928396799 1928394752 919,5G 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1928398846 1953523711 25124866 12G 5 Estendida /dev/sdb5 1928398848 1953523711 25124864 12G 82 Linux swap / lspci returns: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Processor Family PCI Express Root Port (rev 09) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5) 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev b5) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev b5) 00:1c.6 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 7 (rev b5) 00:1c.7 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 8 (rev b5) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Z68 Express Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 520] (rev a1) 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1) 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. I'm pretty new to linux but I have some experience, and I've been trying to make this work for the past 3 days. I am on a dual boot setup with MX linux and win11 right now. The problem is, my computer refuses to make any sound come out of it when running Linux (win11 still works). Built-in speakers, speakers through USB and USB-c and bluetooth speakers all do not work. The audio slider moves when sound should be there, but nothing comes out. I have messed around with pulseaudio and alsa trying to find if anything is muted, but everything is as it should be. I have also tried switching distros (MX linux, Mint debian edition, Manjaro), all of them had the same issue. Changing to a older or newer kernel has no effect. Other fixes that I've tried and didn't work: https://github.com/badgers-ua/asus_zenbook_ux5304va_sound https://www.linux.org/threads/solved-asus-zenbook-15-ux534f-realtek-hd-audio-problem.27384/ Updating BIOS Running from a live USB Unmuting everything in alsamixer Some more info about my setup:

There are reports of this issue being consistent across this range of laptops from ASUS. Some people say that a kernel upgrade fixed the issue for them, but it didn't for me. Thank you for any help, I am getting kind of desperate now.

I'm using an Asus UX3404VA laptop. I wanted to set the charge_control_end_threshold as described [here](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1006778/set-battery-thresholds-on-ubuntu-asus) . I can set the value but it has no effect. The kernel version I use is 6.9.3-76060903-generic and the OS is PopOS 22.04. I've tested this on my older Asus laptop and it works as expected. I see the following log lines in the dmesg | grep -i acpi output. Does it suggest that I should upgrade the BIOS or upgrade the kernel?

I have recently built a PC. Specs: - Mobo: TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI - GPU: Radeon Rx 6800 XT OC - CPU: Ryzen 7 7800x3d - RAM: 2x 16GB 6000Hz CL30 First I've installed Windows. That system had problems with using the mobo's network card. After **installing the provided drivers** it all came together nicely and works without issues. ## Minor issues Unfortunately, I've encountered many problems during Debian installation (I want to have both systems). During installation, the installer was unable to configure DHCP, so I simply skipped this step and continued without the internet connection. After installation, I was unable to use wifi (I haven't checked if the RJ45 port works), so I'm using my phone to share internet through usb. I might add that bluetooth also doesn't really work, it's unable to connect to any device and sometimes it doesn't even register surrounding devices. I was unable to find proper drivers. There are only drivers for Red Hat, Ubuntu and SLED. I couldn't find any quick fixes, so I didn't bother with this issue (I won't be using the network adapter anyways). ## The most important issue is that my GPU refuses to output HDMI signal (now, my monitor is connected to the integrated graphics). Let me clarify what happens if I connect my monitor through HDMI (I don't have display port in that device). My screen simply constantly displays:[The image of the freezed screen](https://i.sstatic.net/lFxVx.jpg) . Changing the to the mobo's port after that freeze makes the screen work correctly. Changing back, to gpu reverts to the same freeze screen. The text on the freezed screen:
Booting `Debian GNU/Linux'

Loading Linux 6.1.0-18-amd64 . . .
Loading initial ramdisk . . .
I've tried running apt update, apt upgrade. Running sudo update-initramfs -u resulted in printing a lot of missing modules, which I've installed according to the fix provided [here](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1124253/missing-firmware-for-amdgpu) and [here](https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/710036/possible-missing-firmware-although-firmware-is-installed) . The second fix actually was onto something, I didn't have the "firmware-linux" pacakge installed (I did install it). Yet after all this, after running sudo update-initramfs -u I get:
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.1.0-18-amd64
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/ip_discovery.bin for module amdgpu

I'll be grateful for any help, because I'm unable to solve this issue by myself. EDIT: After running the suggested commands my sources.list file looks like this:
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.5.0 _Bookworm_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 with firmware 20240210-11:28]/ bookworm contrib main non-free-firmware
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
Edit 2: The system or someone, flagged this as a [duplicated] question. I assure you it was not, the fix in the linked question DIDN'T work for me. The problem was, that I had an old version of bios installed on my mobo. After updating bios the gpu problem vanished (I might add, that I've tried many things and in the end I've installed Ubuntu 22.04.04 instead of Debian 12). For the record, the version of bios my mobo was using was 1811, and the version that works for me is 2413. I've also had the newest (6.0.60002) amd drivers installed while I've updated my bios. I would have closed this question, if it hadn't been closed before, by someone who didn't assess the situation well or the system. So yeah, kids update your bios if you've got such a strange driver issue.

Can't boot any distro without acpi=off

I have really limited Linux know-how. Specs: - Asus ROG Strix G15DS-R7700X088W - AMD Ryzen 7 7700X - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 2x 1TB SSDs; 1x M2 NVME with W11 running, 1x SATA Goal: Running Dual Boot with W11 on the first M2 SSD (already running fine) and Linux on the second SATA SSD Distros I tried: - Nobara 39 - Fedora 39 - Fedora 38 - Fedora Silverblue - Ubuntu 22.04 - Pop!_OS - Linux Mint - Arch Linux - GarudaOS - GarudaOS Dr460nized Problem I run into: I can't boot even from the LiveUSB without the acpi=off option. If I do, I get just a black Screen (with the backlight still on) or, if I get into the Grub options first, there‘s only "booting command list" visible but nothing else happens (even with "quiet" disabled, no info on the screen at all). One thing I noticed, since my keyboard, mouse and mousemat (Razerfly) have lighting, when I try to boot without the acpi=off, they go dark and stay dark. With acpi=off, the keyboard alone goes dark but then lights up again after 2-3 seconds. If I run it with acpi=off, I can boot and install, but I then have to boot every time with acpi=off. This leads to the graphics driver not being recognized by the OS and running always in 1024x768 "software rendering" resolution (even with proper drivers installed and enabled and nouveau on blacklist). As a result, having "acpi=off" enabled isn't an option. Also, when trying to boot without acpi=off I see that straight after hitting enter, my USBs seem to go off (by seeing that the RGB on keyboard, mouse and mousepad go off completely). I already reached out to several communities over reddit/discord/kbin/lemmy (linuxquestions, linux4noobs, asus-linux, linux, nobara, popos, and maybe even several more) but haven't find a solution yet. - BIOS/UEFI is up to date, no newer version available. - Secure Boot is off (=set to "Custom OS") - Fast Boot is off What I tried (by googling myself and/or by getting answer's from the other comms): Boot with different options: - acpi=strict / acpi=force / acpi=ht / noacpi / acpi=noirq / acpi=irqfixup - noapic / nolapic - pci=nommsconf - pci=biosirq - pci=noacpi - iommu=soft / iommu=off - nomodeset / nvidia-drm.modeset=0 / nvidia-drm.modeset=1 / nouveau.blacklist=1 - ibt=off burn the ISOs with different software: - Rufus - Ventoy - Fedora Media Writer Other: * swap USB Slots / Sticks * went through my UEFI Settings several times, trying to enable/disable tons of different options * disable onboard graphics with nvidia gpu enabled and the other way round (even tried by removing the nvidia card completely) * tried to install older versions of the distro's with older kernels I see with "insmode progress" in grub, that kernel and initrd are loading but after that nothing happens. No logs at all, just a black screen with backlight on or just one line stating "booting a command line" when adjusting some grub options beforehand. I reached out to ASUS as well, but after some basic troubleshoot help (CMOS Reset, use other Distro, etc.) they let me hanging with "yeah, we don't support it, so we can't help". I'm now in a state where I think about swapping my MoBo, but got the suggestion to try asking on here, so that I have all options covered. So, does someone know if/how I can tackle that?

I am trying to install Debian 12.4.0 alongside Windows 10 in my Asus Zenbook Flip 15 (UX564). Despite having prepared 100 GB of free space for Debian installation (see first picture), the Debian installer fails to detect this unallocated space when I do the guided partitioning by using the largest continous free space (see second picture). Current disk partitions Failed to detect the free space If I try to do the Manual partition, the Debian installer detects my disk but it shows neither the Windows partition nor the unallocated free space (see third picture). Manual partitioning My Asus Zenbook Flip 15 is operating in UEFI BIOS mode, and my disk is an Intel Optane H10 with SSD 512GB. Checking my disk, I found that it is a basic disk (not dynamic disk) with a GPT partition style. Additionaly, the Fast boot and the Secure boot are disabled as recommened to install debian alongside Windows. I am new installing linux so I don't know how to solve it. I have found similar problems in different forums on the web. However, the solutions they propose are related to having a dynamic memory, a MBR partition style, or using the Legacy boot mode instead of the UEFI mode. I have also disabled the VMD controller to change the SATA mode operation from RAID/RST to AHCI, but by doing this the Debian installer doesn't detect my disk at all. If anyone has encountered a similar issue or knows how to resolve it, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. Additionally, any suggestions for troubleshooting steps would be welcome. Thank you in advance for your assistance! EDITED: Debian installer detects free space on the USB drive but not on my laptop drive if Windows fast start is disabled (see picture). enter image description here

I have switched to integrated GPU. The problem I have with this device is that it drains battery in a unreasonable way. Battery would not last even 1 hour in normal mode. Another problem is that it gets way too hot (50 C at least when idle). Fans do not work in normal mode and power save mode. Fans just work in performance mode in a regular speed (not even full speed). So: - Is there any way to find out what process or software consumes this much battery? - How can I configure my fans to start working in normal mode or whenever I reach 40 degrees for example?

I have bought a fanless PC, and it is really important for me to have some form of power management for this PC, because currently I don't under Qubes, and the result is that if I do something that puts a lot of load on the CPU like playing a full-screen video in Firefox, the CPU overheats and the system (firmware?) automatically goes into emergency power-saving mode, which involves making the CPU go really slow. I have transferred responsibility to the Linux kernel for power management by adding cpufreq=dom0-kernel to the Xen command line. This doesn't help. I have then tried to switch from the intel pstate driver (which doesn't work with my Rocket Lake CPU, an Intel® Core™ i7-11700) to the acpi-cpufreq driver by adding intel_pstate=disable. This also doesn't help - sudo cpupower frequency-info shows "no or unknown cpufreq driver is active on this CPU". I then installed the latest version of thermald on my dom0 domain, but thermald is not able to find any temperature sensors:
[WARN]Thermal DTS: No coretemp sysfs found
I have ran sudo sensors-detect, but that didn't help. I have then ran modprobe processor_thermal_rapl and modprobe processor_thermal_device and restarted thermald, but it still showed the same errors. My motherboard is an Asus TUF GAMING B560M-PLUS WIFI. Please help me to enable some form of thermal throttling / frequency governor on this PC, other than the firmware's emergency thermal throttling.

PS: the best experience I had with couple of Distros that I tested was Pop_OS! because of the nvidia driver

I have had this laptop (*Asus Vivobook S14 M3402RA*) for about a month now and I installed Linux on it without any major issues. However, a few days ago, when I plugged in an external keyboard, the laptop's built-in keyboard became unresponsive. I found that the keyboard was unresponsive even after unplugging the external one. I tried reinstalling my system and I had high hopes as the keyboard worked in the BIOS menu. Unfortunately, this was not the case when the desktop environment loaded up. I tried this process with the following desktop environments (the keyboard did not function on either one): i3, hyprland, kde, gnome, lxde. I have tried a rolling-release distro (arch linux) and a stable one (linux mint) but the keyboard did not work on either. I would like to note that the touchpad works everywhere, as do the Fn keys. The problem is very similar to the one described in this post: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/709957/keyboard-not-working-in-asus-vivobook-s-15-2022-and-kubuntu-22-04 I have also tried the solutions in this post, but they did not work: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1360683/keyboard-not-working-after-shutdown-asus-zenbook-13-oled-um325s/1363587#1363587 Any help would be greatly appreciated!
