I am looking for a Linux OS that will support my older hardware in my laptop (from 2014). I would like to have a simple, not bloated desktop, but also not too ancient-looking ;) *edit*: By "hardware" I mainly mean wifi and webcam - I do expect Linux to run on a ten-year-old cpu. Here's some more information: The laptop is an HP pro Book, in case that matters. Linux really caught me when I started to use ElementaryOS something like 15 years ago. I have been happy with ElementaryOS, but the recent versions don't seem to support my hardware. At least, it didn't work anymore after an update. So I want to move away from this. (It also doesn't support my USB camera on my computer) Last time I used Ubuntu it brought a lot of bloatware like Amazon search and strange stuff. Also I don't know how well Ubuntu supports old hardware. Maybe Debian with a modern desktop might be a solution for me? Or does this not depend on the distro, but more on something else (like the kernel)? Edit: Using a live version of Ubuntu was a good idea. I booted from it and got greeted with a "missing firmware" message that seems common (many questions on that on the internet). So I've got a starting point although I haven't yet fixed that. My webcam worked out of the box :):) yeah!

I built a machine using an [ASUS TUF GAMING B650M-PLUS](https://www.asus.com/br/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-b650m-plus/) motherboard and a Ryzen 7 8700G CPU. Linux installed with no problems, but I am missing fan control and monitoring. Under Windows, I use ASUS software to do stuff like setting fan curves and monitoring fan speeds: enter image description here enter image description here What I have tried: * pwmconfig doesn't find any fans. * sensors-detect fails to find anything but spd5118 (RAM temperature, I believe), k10temp (CPU temperature), amdgpu and NVME temperature. * [CoolerControl](https://gitlab.com/coolercontrol/coolercontrol) doesn't find any fans, either. I keep finding stuff about fan control in ASUS laptops, which isn't the case. What tools can I use under Linux to manage CPU fans? Right now, I need to reboot and enter Setup, which is very impractical.

Note: I thought about it and really felt like it belongs here. It's not about hardware, such as it is about Linux drivers/compatibility. Am I wrong? I'm not new to Linux - but I mostly administered VMs here and then. While considering which board to buy for my new PC (, and while thinking of Microsoft's announce about 22H2 being the last Windows 10 update ), I started to entertain with the thought of installing Linux on my main workstation. I will probably buy the AMD 7900X CPU, and am considering these motherboards: - Gigabyte X670 GAMING X AX - Gigabyte X670 AORUS ELITE AX I'm mostly wondering about the motherboard/chipset compatibility with Linux, since the rest ( HDD, SSD, GPU, RAM ) should already be supported. I guess it will work, but I preffer to buy something that'll work **better**. Where can I find such info? Did anybody had an experience with one of these motherboards? - Gigabyte's website only shows Windows 10/11 downloads - Ubunto only shows prebuilt in their website ( and most of them are OLD ) Thanks for the help!

I have moved a hard disk containing openSUSE Leap 15.5 from one laptop to the other. The two laptops are from two different manufacturers. The OS runs fine on the new laptop. But there are some glitches here and there. How can I make sure that the OS drivers are compatible with the new laptop? ### Note Previously, I had the experience of moving a hard disk containing Windows 10 between laptops. After the move, I had to update the device drivers on Windows according to the new hardware. I'm basically looking for an equivalent approach to openSUSE. I'm not sure, does it make sense? # UPDATE A glitch example was the freezing of the monitor when connecting a 2nd display by HDMI cable. Now this glitch is resolved by itself. I'm not sure why. Maybe a reboot or app restart resolved the problem.

I'm looking for a new desktop (tower) system to run Debian 11. I'd like to avoid having to download proprietary drivers for the hardware to work properly. Requirements: 1. Reasonably recent CPU (Intel i7 or better equivalent) 2. 16GB of RAM (upgradeable) 3. Two screens with resolutions higher than 1920x1080 Especially with point 3 I had a bad experience in the past: On an older system with Intel UHD 550 (IIRC) graphics hardware, I had to add an external card (GeForce GT730) to even recognise my bigger screen, which seemed to work fine with the free Nouveau drivers, but crashed my XFCE session when sharing my screen on Zoom. I had to install proprietary NVIDIA drivers which are working OK now. 1. Is there a graphics configuration that works without having to install proprietary drivers? 2. Are there any built-in options (such as Intel UHD 770), or will I need to get an extra card? 3. Are AMD systems/graphics cards better supported by free drivers than Intel ones? 4. If I need an external card, which one would have the best (Free Software) driver support? NB: There's no need for fancy 3D gaming acceleration.

I have a laptop with GTX 1050 card and planning to buy in the near future PC with some external nvidia card as well. I want to install linux on both of them, but I never used linux with nvidia before and want to know what are compatibility issues I can face, because as far as I know nvidia and linux don't have a good relationship. Also, with the laptop that run on windows currently, I have the ability to use internal(CPU's) graphic card and GTX 1050 per application. So, when I'm not gaming I can use internal one, when I am gaming or need the 1050's power, I switch to it. Is this how it should work with linux as well?

Unfortunately, my LSI MegaRAID SAS 8708EM2 Raid Controller is no longer recognized on my new Server when i use a Kernel version higher than 4.10.9. So on version 4.10.9 it is showing my disks, but after updating to 4.11 it is not detecting the Card in lspci and not showing any disks with lsblk. On my old Mainboard the Card was working fine on the newest Kernel. So at first I was thinking its some Bios setting which could fix the problem, but unfortunately i didn't found anything and there must be a Software fix because the old kernel is working fine. I'm pretty sure that the problem is related to the compatibility of PCI gen 1 and newer Mainboards and not to the Card in particular, since the Card still works fine with the latest driver on the old Kernel. Unfortunately, I'm a newbie in the area of kernel compiling (I used this tutorial ) and don't know exactly what modifications I should make to debug better. I thought it would be possible to limit the problem by applying the kernel patches individually and patching the kernel until the card is no longer recognized, unfortunately the approach turned out to be stupid relatively quickly. I also looked for changes in the change logs and , but unfortunately I didn't find anything there either. I am very grateful for every idea that could help Debugging or fixing the issue.

I can also see it in Disks and gparted 4. If I reinsert the original DVD drive, it is properly detected in bios 5. I ran update-grub2and it detected the Fedora installation and added it as an entry in grub menu list, which I can see at boot also. Selecting the Fedora entry gives an error saying the hard drive is not present I saw posts on Stackexchange and changed BIOS settings to disable secure boot. Changed boot to Legacy mode, boot priority is legacy first, reset settings to default. None of these detected the HDD. Fedora installation was done on this same laptop. Is the problem of not detecting the caddy HDD BIOS related or is the caddy faulty?

I've been provided with what appears to be a functional PIII Dell Dimension L667r with a whopping 128M of RAM. Further complicating the issue is this system appears to be unable to boot off USB and has only a CDROM available to install from. In a likely futile effort to save this ancient beast from the landfill, I'm looking for a lightweight 32-bit linux with a GUI that is capable of installing and running on a system with these rather restricted specifications. I tried to install Debian 11.4 32 bit which resulted in a notification that 257M of RAM was required to install it.I was able to install tinycore, but it seems a bit too much trouble to setup and use for a probable recipient of this machine. I was able to install bionicpup32-8.0-uefi, which appears to dislike the video. Ideally, I'd like to find a light linux that at least has the 'lshw' command so that I can determine how to overcome the issues I'm encountering with this old beast. I'd pull the drive and place it in another machine so that I could improve my chances of success by creating a swap partition, but the hdd technology is pre-SATA (IDE) and I don't have a system old enough to support the drive other than this one.Any ideas would be appreciated.

The SSD is listing as having bad sectors, so I'd like to upgrade the machine. How do I go about this, while keeping the current OS? What are the criteria for compatible hardware on which the OS can run?

Ryzen 3 2200u laptop linux compatibility
Do Ryzen 3 2200u laptops work without issues with stock install of Debian 9 or Ubuntu 18.04? I do not want to install nor patch nor compile! I have to choose between Core i3 6006u and Ryzen 3 2200u. DisplayPort monitors via HP USB-C Universal Dock not detected by HP EliteBook 840 G7
I've connected the monitors to the dock, and the monitors detect when they are being connected and disconnected, so there doesn't seem to be any issue with the signal as such. All the other plugs on the dock are also working perfectly (power, Ethernet, USB to keyboard and mouse, USB-C to laptop). Basically everything is working fine, but Linux is not detecting the monitors connected to the dock. sudo dmesg --follow does not show anything when disconnecting and reconnecting a monitor. Should this be solvable? I'm running XWayland on GNOME on an up-to-date Arch Linux 5.10.47-1-lts.

I'll spare the whys and hows of the project behind this but I am working on some hardware that needs to appear to the host Linux machine (Raspberry Pi) as a touchscreen*, ideally one that works over I2C or Serial bus and would be automatically discovered at boot time. So the question is - what are some well supported I2C or Serial touchscreen devices that would be a good choice to emulate in the situation? It ideally wants to be a well-supported & reliable driver so we don't have to do any tinkering with the host linux build to make it work, and simple enough that we don't have to jump through too many hoops on the emulation side either. *= Or similar pointing device like a Wacom tablet I guess would work as it uses X/Y cooridinates rather than "mousey" movements.

I am using the Eve 5 2-in-1 laptop from a small enthusiasts manufacturer . The device came with windows installed and the in-built camera and microphone work with this OS. But more often I use the other partition on the device - Ubuntu 20.04.2. On it the in-built camera and mic don't work (but I can use external mics from headphones). From looking in the forums of the device I found that the device doesn't have drivers for the camera and mic for Linux. Here you can see the output of my lsusb and lsusb -v commands: lsusb Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0603:00f1 Novatek Microelectronics Corp.
