This HP Probook was running Chrome OS Flex fine until the latest update, now I get an error message on boot and the laptop switches off after about 5 seconds. To check this was the issue, I made a fresh Chrome OS Flex USB and it booted fine. I went through the install process fine too and it rebooted successfully. I got a "just a few updates" message and then it rebooted back to the same issue. I guess its hardware incompatibility for my 2012 Probook but is there anything I can do?

I've been trying the "Developer console" in ChromeOS( dev mode), which is entered by Ctrl+Alt+Forward but when switching the keyboard layout with
loadkeys cz
I got an error saying Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console
.
+ I get the same when chroot is entered from crosh, but in that case the layout set in ChromeOS is used, which is fine.
I can see that the keyboard code is correct with ls /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/
In addition I've found the response of loadkeys
is the same in Crosh , only there is the language/layout inherited from the system setup.
Is there any other way to set the keyboard mapping/layout in shell?

I installed ChromeOS Flex on my late 2008 Macbook . Unfortunately I cannot enable Linux mode yet. These threads on reddit (1 and 2 ) that suggest changing ChromeOS Flex to developer mode would fix it.
So I added the
cros_debug
flag to GRUB
(efi and syslinux) configuration files and I also checked for the kvm-intel.vmentry_l1d_flush=always
flag and it was already present in every single grub config file entry.
Still when I try to start termina I get the following:
crosh> vmc start termina --untrusted
Error: operation vm_start
failed: bad VM status: VM_STATUS_FAILURE
: Host vulnerable against untrusted VM
[ERROR:src/main.rs:184] ERROR: command failed
Next I tried looking up the l1tf vulnerabilities on my laptop and this is what I encountered:
crosh> shell
chronos@localhost / $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/l1tf
Mitigation: PTE Inversion; VMX: EPT disabled
Edit: I have now also added the kvm-intel.ept=0
too, see bellow:
chronos@localhost / $ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/syslinux/vmlinuz.A init=/sbin/init boot=local rootwait ro noresume noswap loglevel=7 noinitrd console= kvm-intel.vmentry_l1d_flush=always kvm-intel.ept=0 dm_verity.error_behavior=3 dm_verity.max_bios=-1 dm_verity.dev_wait=1 i915.modeset=1 cros_efi cros_debug root=/dev/dm-0 "dm=1 vroot none ro 1,0 4710400 verity payload=PARTUUID=E09BB354-34E7-5343-B0A2-BB06778C6B78 hashtree=PARTUUID=E09BB354-34E7-5343-B0A2-BB06778C6B78 hashstart=4710400 alg=sha256 root_hexdigest= salt="
I am not sure what the mitigations mean in practical terms, but I wonder if are there any other GRUB
flags I could add to overcome the error I am having starting crostini?

The other day I tried to get rid other the cheomeOS ony Acer Chromebook CB5-312T-K5X4, but when I went into developer mode and inserted the USB, it said chromeOS not found on this USB. I don't know if I didn't do the steps correctly, or if it is the Chromebook itself.I tried to do the
ctrl +refresh+power button
then I pressed ctrl + d
. After that, I inserted the USB with Linuxmin and I already flashed it through Etcher. But when it rebooted, it said in developer mode, press space to switch to chromeOS or something like that. I am pretty sure that the drivers can run it, but if not please tell me. If I need to jailbreak this laptop or I didn't do it right, please tell me. I would like to install Linuxmint or Ubuntu. I would be willing if this worked with Kali Linux.

Unable to run Logic 2010 on Linux in ChromeOS

I am trying to install Logic 2010 (download link ), which uses Java, on the Linux virtual machine in ChromeOS.
I followed steps 0 to 2 in a guide from Reddit , copied the Java folder into the Resources folder (per the first comment on the guide), and then followed steps 3 to 4.
**Step 0:** On a fresh Linux virtual machine, I installed Java using the following two command lines:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install default-jdk
**Step 1:** I downloaded the Mac version of Logic 2010, which comes in a .zip file, from the download page (direct link to Mac version )
**Step 2a:** I copied the .zip file to the "My files/Linux files" directory using ChromeOS
**Step 2b:** I unzipped the .zip file using the Linux command line below:
unzip InstallLogic2010_mac_20250116.zip
This creates a "Logic 2010.app" directory.
**Step 2c:** I copied the Java folder ("Logic 2010.app/Contents/Java") into the Resources folder ("Logic 2010.app/Contents/Resources").
**Step 3:** I changed the current working directory using the following command line:
cd "Logic 2010.app/Contents/Resources"
**Step 4:** I run the following command, which starts up Logic 2010:
java -Dprog.dir=Java -Dlink.dir=. -Droot.dir=../.. -jar Java/logic.jar
I get a "could not load thread violation checker" error, as predicted by the guide, but I also get an error pop-up message. It says:
> There is a problem with the communication to the database server.
>
> If this problem persists, please check your network connection (and
> any firewalls).
>
> If your network connection is fine, copy the errors.txt and
> diagnostics.txt files from your work folder and contact your
> instructor.
>
> no response from server
>
> Retry the operation?
...along with two buttons on the bottom of the message: "Retry" and "Abort"
Clicking "Retry" just reloads the pop-up message. I have to click "Abort" three times in a row in order to exit the program, because clicking "Abort" for the first two clicks just reloads the pop-up message.
Below are the contents of errors.txt and diagnostics.txt.

I get this:
curl: (60) SSL certificate problem: unable to get local issuer certificate
More details here: https://curl.se/docs/sslcerts.html

How do you unpack a
.bin
file containing a DOS/MBR Boot Sector and another undetected filesystem. I've ran binwalk
on it and it showed me the (estimated) locations of data and their types. The output of file
is:
chromeos_15393.58.0_reven_recovery_stable-channel_mp-v2.bin: DOS/MBR boot sector; partition 1 : ID=0xc, active, start-CHS (0x16,176,27), end-CHS (0x1e,216,58), startsector 364544, 131072 sectors; partition 2 : ID=0xee, start-CHS (0x0,0,2), end-CHS (0x0,0,2), startsector 1, 1 sectors
From this information I knew there was a Boot Sector at the beginning, but where are the files from the Image and how can I get them. FYI it is ChromeOS based on Android (and Android is based on Linux) the ZIP containing the .bin
is located [here](https://support.google.com/chromeosflex/answer/11541904) . I have dd
ed the Disk Image to a USB and am using it from there.
I tried gdisk
on it and this was the result:

Found valid MBR and corrupt GPT. Which do you want to use? (Using the

When I saw the "corrupt GPT" I was confused. It cannot possibly be corrupt. And to be fully honest, the names of the areas would make sense for a Linux install (eg EFI-SYSTEM, KERN-A).

Currently i'm stuck in grub script for dual booting chromeOS provided by guide to install chromeOS since it's freezing during boot
here's the script provided by the video guide, and here's the partition i got from my laptop. my laptop got 2 ssd, the first ssd divided into 2 partition (c,d letter), and the 2nd ssd also divided into 2 partition (e,f letter), and chromeOS installed in f letter.
since chrome based in linux some people said i've should use /dev/nvme0n0p1 instead /dev/sdaX based on the original script guide.

.
I can *boot* it on my main computer, a Dell OptiPlex GX620, but I can't use it due to connectivity problems (see this question if you want to help.) I can, however, get it booted and working on the Netbook, which is a Toshiba NB255.
I recently got a Laptop, it has no battery, and when trying to boot Chromium OS on it, it says "Your system is repairing itself. Please wait." and then reboots. I let it keep cycling for literally an hour, then decided that it was, in fact, *not* actually repairing anything. What am I doing wrong? The laptop is a Dell Inspiron B130.

So I'm not sure if this is the right place for my question since I'm using Chrome OS, but I've put it in developer mode and opened a shell, which looks very reminiscent of a Unix shell. I've never really used Unix or Linux though so I don't really know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, I did all this so I could install Anaconda on it and, in following instructions I found elsewhere, typed
cd /usr
then sudo chmod a+rw local
then cd ~/Downloads
then bash Anaconda-3-4.0.0-Linux-x86_64.sh
. It ran for a while and was seemingly successful but at a certain point hit the following error:
./Anaconda3-4.0.0-Linux-x86_64.sh: line 450: /home/chronos/user/anaconda3/pkgs/python-3.5.1-0/bin/python: Permission denied
ERROR:
cannot execute native linux-64 binary, output from 'uname -a' is:

I basically got that some kind of a permission thng was going on and guessed that maybe I need to prepend sudo
onto the command. So then I executed sudo bash Anaconda-3-4.0.0-Linux-x86_64.sh
and now get the error
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/root/anaconda3’:

I recently installed Shotcut on my Chromebook via the Linux Virtual Environment (Debian) on the Terminal. While the program works for the most part, it is also asked me to update to the latest version. I downloaded the .txz files from the site but I am not sure where to extract the files. The version of the Shotcut video editor that I have installed is not the latest version.
The .txz file is but I have no idea where to extract the file on Linux. I cannot use the Terminal to update it either as it tells me that I have the latest version. The .txs file is the lastest version and it has all the updated files. What should I do? Should I reinstall the software? Should I find a .rom or .deb file?

How do you create a remote connection from Wine/Linux to Windows OS? I had been wanting to connect to the Linux Environment on my Chromebook for some time. I want to try to play games on my Chromebook but built in keyboard is not ideal for that. I also wanted to see my Chromebook screen on my monitor. I do not own a USB-C connector so I want to connect to my Linux Environment from my Windows XP computer.
I know it is old and I plan to get a new computer in the future. For now, I want to be able to connect to Linux environment from Windows OS. My Linux OS in my virtual environment Debian 11 (Bullseye). I want to create a remote desktop connection from Windows OS to my Linux and vice versa. How do you connect it from Wine to any Windows OS from XP to 11 and vice versa? I am trying to figure out a way to do it but I am having trouble with it. Can anyone help me?

For context, I was using a Linux version of BizHawk (A multi system TAS emulator) on Chromebook via the Linux Terminal that required Mono. There was an error (the error being that it crashed when I tried to make a video dump) where I could not create video dumps despite having the FFMPEG software version necessary to create them. The only way for me to use the video dumping feature was to get an actual FFMPEG software for my Linux Terminal. That fixed the problem but when I told this to someone, they told me that it was not supposed to do that.
They also asked me for the log file and they noticed that I had Wine along with Mono at the time. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the Linux Terminal with only Mono installed this time. I used to have Wine in the original installation but I removed it to see if that fixed the problem. It didn't as there might have been something wrong with the emulator or my Linux Terminal. I know Chromebooks were never designed with games in mind but I needed to use it out of necessity.
I am also confused as well. I wanted to use Mono for programs and Wine for other programs but I am not sure if it would have caused a conflict. Can anyone here tell me what side effects there are to using both emulators together? Will it cause a crash? Will cause some problems doe other Linux programs? My Linux OS on the Linux Terminal was Debian 11 Bullseye.

have installed ChromeOS Flex on my PC. It runs great, and I have turned on and installed Linux via the Developer menu in Settings.
But, I cannot run installed Linux applications. When I open them via the Linux apps folder in the "start menu", they just appear to load forever.
If I try to run them via Terminal:
sudo su ./rider.sh
they just show an error that says:
jase@penguin:/mnt/chromeos/MyFiles/Downloads/JetBrains Rider-2023.1.2/bin$ sudo sh ./rider.sh
No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :0
And it doesn't matter which Linux app I try to run, they all display the same error.
How can this be resolved?
I've spent a day or two researching this error and not a single thing I've tried has resolved the issue. I can't even remember everything I've tried.
One of the things suggested was: xhost +
But that didn't work either.
