I am in the process of finally switching my main machine over to Linux. One of the last items I am still urgently trying to solve is to find an email client that is capable of taking advantage of the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. I have my own open source version of that protocol running and synchronize all of my devices with my server. That way I can keep all my emails, contacts and calendars in sync. The issue is that the only email client I found was bluemail which I have a few challenges to setup which I believe it's because of the self signed certificate. I am working on that piece. Anyway, are there other email clients that you can suggest that would support the EAS protocol?
I tried Thunderbird, but that only supports the sync of calendar and contacts with the TB sync plugin, Evolution, supporting the EWS protocol. Unfortunately it seems that there are no other clients that support the ActiveSync one. I did some investigation but could not identify other alternatives. I would appreciate any suggestions for a client that does support the Exchange ActiveSync protocol and sync mails, calendar and contacts.
Thanks

When I start Thunderbird (31.2.0 under Ubuntu 14.04), my Outlook 365 account
john.doe@example.com
accessed over IMAP is completely unreachable (I can't even see the list of folders, even though I have local archives). I see the following message in a D-Bus notification (several times):
> The current operation on 'Inbox' did not succeed. The mail server for account john.doe@example.com responded: User is authenticated but not connected.
This account has been working for a while. I changed my password during my previous Thunderbird session; after entering the new password, Thunderbird still worked.
What does this seemingly nonsensical message “User is authenticated but not connected” mean? How do I get my email?

My email provider operates a Microsoft Exchange server through which I send and receive email, using Thunderbird (on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS). I do this both on a desktop computer and on a separate laptop.
Everything works alright, except for the synchronization of message tags. If I tag an email in Thunderbird on the desktop using the '1' key, then this tag does not show up on the laptop and vice versa. Fortunately, this kind of tag synchronization *does* work on other email accounts that I have.
So:

I have successfully set up Davmail on Ubuntu 14 and am able to read, receive and send mail on my Exchange account in Thunderbird. This page was a big help!:
http://nknu.net/ubuntu-14-04-exchange-configuration-thunderbird-pidgin/
I set the account up as IMAP, so I can also browse folders. One thing I can't seem to do is subscribe to or otherwise access the "Online Archive" - a copy of my Inbox and subfolders for all mail more than a year old (my IT department's policy). Davmail release notes say that this is possible but I can't find any guides on how to view this archive folder in Thunderbird, or any other mail clients. Can anyone suggest what to do or what to read?
Cheers,

I'd like to write a python script that access my email at work (it's accessible from anywhere). So, we're using a browser-based email client called OWA, here's a small documentation of that (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/troubleshoot/owa/set-up-web-access)
The webpage for work email is something like (mail.something.com/owa/), then it asks for the credentials which I use to access my company's computer.
Things to note we don't have a POP3 or IMAP, we can access the email only through this domain and login with our credentials.
**So, I need to know what library do I have to use to access my email through the link (mail.something.com/owa/) to read my inbox and download attachments?**

I have a Windows XP laptop that has MS Outlook 2007. I didn't have to do anything to set it up. I connected my laptop to office network and it picked up all settings by itself. Now I want to dump this laptop and start replying on my Linux (RHEL) desktop. I want to use mutt as the email client to my remote exchange mail server. I have got the mail server hostname and it does support IMAP. I don't want to use a GUI mail client in Linux. I see that Outlook uses an Exchange proxy to connect and it uses NTLM authentication. I have the username and password for the emails. I did extensive search on internet on this topic and I now come to understand that mutt won't do all client jobs like fetching mails, sending mails, etc, so I have to use
- sendmail as simple SMTP client, not as mail server.
- procmail
- fetchmail
- and of course configure mutt to use all the above services.
The most difficult part is configuring sendmail to send mails. Sendmail has far too many options, which is scary, and all documentation on this subject is very old, mostly before 2007.
Can somebody explain what are the steps involved in configuring mutt to receive and send emails on my Linux machine? These are the few things that I can't compromise on:
- it is a must that sendmail be used and not any other software because it is already there and it has lots of documentation so if in trouble there will be help
- it should be mutt and none other.
- password should not be available as a plain text in any text file. it should be encrypted if it needs to be stored in a file.
- it should not prompt me for password every now and then.
- Preferably the interval for checking for new mails should be 2 mins.
- All the filters in Exchange that I have already placed should be exported in mutt as well. It will be better if new filters I create in mutt be exported to Exchange. (This is OPTIONAL)
- email should be available both on the server as well as in mutt. This is a absolute must.

evolution 3.22.2
Since upgrading to Fedora25, evolution does not connect anymore to the exchange server outlook.office365.com anymore. The connection to the latter was/is configured through gnome's "Online Accounts" settings.
This seems to be independent of wayland.
Simply speaking: the server does not show within the evolution interface.
I tested it also on a blank new user account on the fedora machine and tried to get the connection; did not succeed.
Should I consider this a bug? but of what? or how would you work towards making this work again?
Cheers!

Edit in response to comments:
installing evolution-ews helped; but required restart of complete system; restarting the gnome session did not suffice.

I must have read about 65 web pages about this issue, and tried them all, but so far I can't get it to work.
I can access my exchange email using Thunderbird, with the imap server set to
localhost
at port 1143, and the smtp server again set to localhost
; this time with port 1025. These port values are set in my davmail setup, and as I say this is what I use with Thunderbird.
The relevant portion of my .muttrc
file is
set realname = 'Jim Bloggs'
set imap_user = 'AD\12345'
set imap_pass = 'My Password'
set from = 'Jim.Bloggs@jimsmail.org'
# REMOTE FOLDERS
set folder = 'imap://12345@localhost:1143/Inbox'
set spoolfile ='imap://12345@localhost:1143/'
set trash = 'imap://12345@localhost:1143/Trash'
# LOCAL FOLDERS FOR CACHED HEADERS AND CERTIFICATES
set header_cache =~/.mutt/jim_bloggs/cache/headers
set message_cachedir =~/.mutt/jim_bloggs/cache/bodies
set certificate_file =~/.mutt/jim_bloggs/certificates
# SMTP SETTINGS
set smtp_url = 'smtp://12345@localhost:1025/'
set ssl_starttls=yes
set smtp_pass = 'My Password' # use the same password as for IMAP
Currently what happen is this: it logs in and starts to download mail (and takes a v..e..r..y long time - about 15 or 20 minutes - to download 1902 headers), and then hangs on Sorting mailbox...
I am using mutt quite happily for accessing several gmail accounts, and I would like to use it to access my exchange mail as well. But how...?

Under my Contacts, there are 6 address books. Two of them have the form of {some-UUID}, and the others are contacts, gal contacts, global address list, and recipient cache. However, they are all empty.
Is there a way to get the contact list from my server to sync with evolution? Thanks.

I'm using Evolution with
evolution-mapi
to access an Exchange e-mail server.
It has worked flawlessly in the past, but recently it will fail to authenticate, asking my password endlessly. If I enter the correct password, it tells me that it is incorrect.
If I enter an incorrect password, it closes the prompt, but fails to obtain the mail from the inbox (due to the truly incorrect password).
I fixed part of the issue by pointing my client to the server's IP address rather than its hostname, but it will still occasionally fail to send/receive e-mail.
EDIT: What I can do:
I am able to ping
the server via its hostname and IP address with no packet loss. Since this is an internal server (or at least I'm accessing it via LAN), I have no reason to use a FQDN.
I am able to use the server for its other functions, namely a network-mountable directory where we store shared files for work.
The server appears to be fully operable. I'm under the impression that this issue is specific to Evolution or the MAPI plugin, or at least the versions thereof available in Ubuntu 14.04.
EDIT 2: It seems to be on and off whether a certain session of Evolution will properly authenticate. Also, each time I enter my password, I am given the option to save the password to my keyring, but it never seems to actually save.

- Oracle Linux 5.10
- Sendmail version 8.13.8
I'm attempting to send email from a linux server to an Exchange Server and have it delivered to an external address.
Emails are currently being delivered to the exchanges server but are not being forwarded.
The exchange admin at our company tells me that I need to masquerade the From: address to be in the format of servername@mycompany.local.
I currently have the following values set in
sendmail.mc
:
dnl MASQUERADE_AS(`gordmans.com')dnl
dnl MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(gordmans.com)dnl
I am still getting a ctladdr in the maillog of "servername.mycompany.net", which is the same as the output of hostname -f
How do I configure sendmail to send the right From: address?

I have a short question about the topic of MX records.
Let's say, we have multiple mail servers in DNS records. If someone is sending a mail, the outgoing mail server will check the MX and contact the first server with the lowest cost.
Let's say that is an exchange server. If this server doesn't have the requested mail address, what happens then? Does the outgoing mailserver send the message to the second mailserver in the MX record? Or does that depends on the error message by the first mailserver?
And how does exchange handle messages to "unknown addresses"?

The level of enlightenment by a colleague to find a pattern in this has saved me from a new depth of madness. My hope is that the brain trust here can now tell me why...
**The Scene:** We have several generic mail IDs with procmail setup to redistribute mail based on the original recipient. For example, mail sent to generic_ID1 goes to staff1,staff2; mail to generic_ID2 goes to staff3,staff4; et cetera...
GENERIC_ID1_RECIPIENTS="staff1@domain,staff2@domain"
:0
* ^TO.*generic_ID1
! $GENERIC_ID1_RECIPIENTS
**The Problem:** Mail was being truncated, seemingly at random. The pattern finally discovered showed that it occurred when a sentence ended with a period at column 76 and a hard carriage return: not at column 75 or 77; not at column 76 with more text to follow on that same line. Any text following that period was lost.
Addendum: we've just seen it reoccur (and reproduced it) with a period at column 226. I am gobsmacked.
I am able to confirm that procmail receives the message whole by copying the message before redelivery:
:0c # note: 'c'
* ^TO.*generic_ID1
! $GENERIC_ID1_RECIPIENTS
I believe that sendmail may be truncating it upon redelivery but I'm unsure how to diagnose or prove that (I am not a sendmail admin, just a procmail user).
The problem is entirely reproducible.
**The Questions:** Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
Much thanks.
**EDIT: Updated title and tags. The solution is in the comments.**
