Late July 2025, I received a Thunderbird update which caused the UI to change and came with a couple of regressions (e.g. I can't tell from the quick filter buttons whether or not they are active anymore). Ever since that update, Thunderbird is no longer syncing my Office 365 "Sent Items" folder. I have configured my Office 365 account as follows: - When I send an e-mail on the account, I configured Thunderbird to *not* place a copy in the account's "Sent Items" folder, because the SMTP server already does it. I can check in the Outlook Web Application (OWA) that this is actually still happening. - This means that sent e-mails do not immediately show up in my unified inbox within Thunderbird (which includes the "Sent Items" folder), but normally they do after I open the "Sent Items" folder, triggering a synchronization. Since the update, the "Sent Items" folder in Thunderbird shows as empty. No old sent messages and no new ones are visible. In OWA, all of them are still there. In fact, the same seems to be true for other folders (except inbox and trash) on the Office 365 account. Of course, what I want(ed) to know is: how do I fix this? I am on Ubuntu 22.04 and currently Thunderbird 128.12 (but further updates may have happened since the regression occurred.) **Baffling addition:** While typing this question and looking through all of these folders on both OWA and Thunderbird, suddenly they synced. All of them. I changed one thing, but only for the "Sent Items" folder (so not for the other folders that were not, but are now, syncing): I right-clicked it in Thunderbird, chose "Properties", and checked "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder", and then restarted Thunderbird. For now, I conclude that the interaction between Thunderbird and Office 365 is non-deterministic.

get gmail categories on thunderbird
GMail introduced a very good feature of automatically filtering emails into categories like primary, social, promotion, forums, updates. Is there anyway to get this filtering in thunderbird in anyway ? (for example, tag, category, or even folder)

Disable future Thunderbird's "Donate now" tab popovers

I just opened Thunderbird, and an annoying new tab is obscuring my work area telling me "only 3% of users donate…". (I used to donate to Mozilla, and stopped, because of such things, which imho go against Mozilla's mission, but that's totally besides the point.) How do I prohibit Thunderbird from opening a tab loading a website, especially since it's loading an external URL without my consent? I'm on Fedora Linux, so I'm not using Thunderbird's own updater to begin with; I believe that renders "disable automatic app updates" which one gets pointed at elsewhere, irrelevant to my problem. I'm not looking to try out different fork. I want the answer to work with the stock packaged Thunderbird. DNS-blocking and similar ("pi hole") attempts are out of question, because neither do I know which domains this looks up, nor is that (at sensible effort) compatible with my split resolver setup, nor do I assume it could even hypothetically work – I can't be blocking all mozilla domains. The problem here is that I couldn't try *potential* solutions – I can't trigger these popovers, even if they do show up at some loose intervals, to verify. So, I'm looking for "yes, that should work, according to my factual understanding".

>I am starting Firefox from a launcher in XFCE panel where it was placed automatically at installation time. When *Firefox* is running as the default browser and I click on a link in *Thunderbird*, I **always** get the message > Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To use Firefox, you must first close the existing Firefox process, restart your device, or use a different profile. This, as well as other recommended solutions, works but is not sustainable. Having to close Firefox every time before opening a link from an email isn’t practical. Are others experiencing the same issue? What can be done about it? Chromium doesn’t seem to have this problem, at least.

When I open a message (which in my settings opens a new tab with the message), and I use the MOVE TO dropdown to move the message to some other folder, it will load the next message in the list. So far, so good. However, after moving the message, about 30% of the time the MOVE TO and DELETE buttons are faded out for that next message that appears. I don't understand why - or how to fix this. Any thoughts? How it looks BEFORE moving a message: How it looks BEFORE moving a message And this is what happens with the next message: How it looks AFTER moving the previous message

If I start Thunderbird for the first time, it will create a default profile and guide me through an email signup / setup wizard. I'd like to do my this provisioning using a shell script. As a part of my account provisioning, I'd like to create a custom user.js preferences file for Thunderbird . This user.js file might contain custom config entries and preferences for my IMAP/SMTP server. To be able to create a user.js settings file, I need an existing Thunderbird default profile (directory) before. (Where to put my custom user.js file?) The default profile will be a random string like mkxy3j7s.default-release. But I don't know how to predirect this folder name. So I'd like Thunderbird to create this, before I try to write a file into this profile directory. If I run thunderbird --createprofile, it says: Error: argument --createprofile requires a profile name. **Is there a way to have Thunderbird create its default profile for the current user without starting the interactive Thunderbird GUI?** Something like thunderbird --createDefaultProfile would be amazing. So I could do: #!/bin/bash thunderbird --createDefaultProfile findDefaultProfileAndWriteUserJs.sh thunderbird &

I am looking for a way to automatically start Thunderbird 115.13.0 minimized on AlmaLinux 9.4. AlmaLinux uses Wayland, and Thunderbird was installed using dnf install thunderbird. I don't care if it is minimized in the dock or in the top bar, the main thing is that it starts and is minimized. Since Thunderbird does not have such an option (why?), apparently we have to “simulate” a mouse click to minimize it. The proposed solution so far―[birdtray](https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/671861/372935)―didn 't work in this distro: Installed as flatpak, it couldn't find the Thunderbird window and also couldn't find the binary, even though /usr/bin/ is on the PATH. This is probably due to Birdtray's isolation in the flatpak environment, but not sure. Error starting Thunderbird as '/usr/bin/thunderbird ': execvp: No such file or directory $ which thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird Compiling Birdtray from source unfortunately segfaulted. Also the script below, using [wmctrl](https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/752323/372935) , wasn't successful.

I'd like to set up an instance of Thunderbird on a Fedora VM (with a VPN). I want it to use ONLY an alias I have set up with the email providers. But I will still have to use my real credentials to log into the server. So they are in `.thunderbird` somewhere. I have to deal with websites on that VM that are pretty invasive by nature (rental tenancy applications like 2apply, snug.com, etc). Each are in a Firefox Container. They all have the facility to browse your system to upload files and documents, or 'drag-and-drop' - i.e. I have enabled those scripts in NoScript, and I have no choice about that. I'm worried that information will leak from Thunderbird to the websites, particularly my real email address. I understand/believe/have heard that linux doesn't allow programs to work without explicitly commanding them to do so, but... haven't I done exactly that with the websites by enabling file-uploading scripts? How should I think about this? Is it really a risk?

I recently upgraded Thunderbird to version 115.0.1 and since then, the MOVE TO dropdown doesn't work when I am reading an e-mail. I am referring to this option: MOVE TO button When I browse my e-mails (without opening the mail itself), and I use this dropdown, the e-mail that is selected will move to the chosen folder just fine. However, when I open a particular e-mail to read, then the functionality breaks down. The dropdown is still there, and I can still select a folder to move the e-mail to, but it doesn't do anything.
