Arch Linux: Reinstall all broken packages after poweroff during system upgrade
There was power failure during system upgrade (`pacman -Suy`). So I have a lot of broken packages. They seems to be fixed on reinstall with force overwriting (e.g `pacman -S systemd-sysvcompat--overwrite "*"`). So my question is how to apply reinstallation to all broken packages?

I couldn't figure out how to get it back online so I restored a backup from 31/12/22 and it started up but did show the messages below. What was the problem? Is this issue now resolved or does it need further work? Any advice/information is helpful.

But 1 or 2 hours, it failed to boot. No errors just black screen.
I tried other distributions too and the same problem.
Funny thing is it didn't affact windows.
I have tried every manipulation possible like enabling and disabling secure boot or tpm chip.
I even updated my bios too.
I am using linux since 2013, I never experienced this before.
I am using AMD processor and graphics driver.
Can anyone please help me around.

I use my linux computer every day for all kind of task, however, after an inespected power failure when I was using it, the os simply stopped booting. It happens every time I try to start the system, instead of normally booting an error menssage is printed and then nothing more happens.
The linux system I'm using is POP-OS 22.04 which is installed on a nvme drive.
The printed menssage is:
[4.891938] Dev loop0: unable to read RDB block 8
[5.179002]
[5.981357] Dev loop15: unable to read RDB block 8
I'm not sure if the problem is relationed with hardware failure, consindering that the same thing happened one week before, but different of what I'm experiencing now the os booted normally after I reboot my pc.
Thus, I'd like to know if there is any way to solve the problem and make Pop-os boot again or ,if not possible, recover my data from the problematic drive copying to an other.

Can one use journalctl to read or query another machine's journal?
This would seem trivial and obvious on its face but evidently is not. The journalctl man pages and Google reveal nothing on the topic.
I'm in a multiboot environment debugging some especially arcane and elusive boot hang issues.
Obviously, one can't use journalctl on a machine that hangs during boot, so the question is whether I can use journalctl while booted to a functioning machine on one partition to read the systemd journals of a failed machine on another.
syslog is of no assistance because the boot process doesn't proceed beyond tty1, *i.e.*, far enough for syslog / rsyslog to launch and read dmesg. There is some hope that boot messages make it into the systemd-journald log, howver.
Any thoughts about whether this is possible, and how, would be most appreciated.
EDIT: I evidently hadn't read man journalctl closely enough because the -D DIR option is exactly what I'm seeking. Credit to @muru, and thanks.

In each of these cases, the battery had at least 70% of its capacity or (as today) the notebook was connected to the docking station. (This system is less than 6 months old.)
At the time when these poweroffs happened, the system wasn't running any heavy tasks, the RAM (32 GB) wasn't nearly full, and the applications that were running were typically Firefox (with at most a few dozen tabs), Skype, a programming editor (typically Geany; last time also jEdit), Dolphin (under KDE) and (last time, but not today) LibreOffice and Terminator. I often have VeraCrypt running, but it was not running when today's power off happened. In other words, I can't explain the power off based on the applications that were running.
Today, I have looked at logfiles in
var/log
(those that had changed today), e.g. lastlog
, wtmp
, snapper.log
, warn
and messages
, and I also looked at a dump of sudo journalctl --since today > /home/.../journalctldump
, but I am not sure what to look for.
In var/log/warn
I found lines such as the following from around the time of the poweroff:

Several of these lines contain strings such as "unable", "failed" or "fatal", but I have no idea if any of them point to something that might cause a sudden shutdown. Is it at all possible to find the cause of these power offs by inspecting log files or is this a hopeless undertaking?

I upgraded my kde neon from 18.04 to 20.04 using [this Tutorial](https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/upgrade-kde-neon-20-04/) . (The terminal Version). After final reboot, i logged in (the splash screen was taking much longer than usually) And there was no Desktop and no task bar, just a black screen. There was also my thunderbird showing up, but in white (I've set the theme breeze dark, which seems not to apply to the thunderbird after upgrade). what still works is alt+f2 to launch apps. I think it's worth mentioning that i did the system upgrade in the terminal because the GUI claimed I should do all updates even though I updated my system via discover or pkcon litrally 1 minute before.

It looks like my system is suffering from some sort of catastrophic failure, and I'm panicking at the moment, not sure what to do.
I had a 3 drive raid 10 array. I noticed this morning that I was having trouble accessing the array (all my photos are on there). I checked mdadm and it said that one drive was dropped from the array (drive 2). I think this may have been because the computer was shutdown accidentally (there was a blackout), and the drive was kicked as a result.
I tried adding the drive back, and that worked. Then I checked the progress of the rebuild with mdstat, and it is rebuilding at 10 kb/s. Yes. It would take years to rebuild a 3 TB drive at that speed. I check dmseg, and I was getting a bunch of I/O errors for drive 3. It seems that drive 3 has some kind of hardware failure. I checked the drive's health with the disks tool (I think it's from gnome, gnome-disk-tool or something), and it had almost 6000 bad sectors, but apart from that it said it was OK.
So now I'm panicking, thinking that the drive 2 was actually still good and now when I readded it, it's resynching, probably destroying the good data it has. I then tried turning off the computer (I read it was save to do so even when mdstat is resyncing).
Unfortunately, the shut-off is not working. Pressing "ESC" showed me the terminal and it's displaying a bunch of "print_req_error: I/O error, dev sdd, sector ...." type errors. I don't know what to do. Just wait? It's been going on for 30 minutes like this.
Any advice?

As a workaround

A fried of mine gave me her laptop because it was behaving wierdly. This was (Still is) a hard drive failure, and I suggested her to backup her files before installing a new hard drive.
I booted the computer with Ubuntu on a flash drive to backup her files (Mainly family picture and movies), but I still struggle to copy the files : when a file is corrupted, the copy function waits for the copy to complete.
Is there a way I can tell the cp function to skip damaged files ? (Maybe telling it to skip files when the copy speed is too low)
If it isn't possible, can you suggest me a tool which may be useful in that peculiar case ?
Thanks in advance.

So, I've got a USB hard drive, which automounts and is used for hourly-daily-weekly-monthly full-disk snapshots via snapshot.
It seems to have failed. I am leery of attempting to reformat entirely if recovery is possible since that would lose me all the old backups.
------
## Context
OS is Linux Mint 18.1. The drive is a WD MyPassport. The only reason for using a USB drive for this is that I already had it - I don't tend to unplug it.
I recently changed what power strips things were plugged into, which is the only recent event that might have caused power loss - the computer was off when I did that, though. I had some trouble booting after that, searching seemed to indicate a problem solvable by shorting the CLR CMOS pins on my motherboard to reset the BIOS. So apparently there might have been power issues, somehow. After that, I continued to have trouble booting past the emergency-recovery terminal until I removed the backup drive from my
fstab
.
## Attempts to diagnose
(all commands with sudo
)
fdisk -l /dev/sdb
produces `fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdb: Input/output error
`
blkid /dev/sdb
outputs nothing.
fsck /dev/sdb
outputs
fsck from util-linux 2.27.1
e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
fsck.ext2: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sdb
Could this be a zero-length partition?
ls /dev
lists sdb
Attempting to mount it by UUID produces mount: can't find UUID=83dbb817-b194-4c83-bb3f-9b67163e1c5c
Attempting to boot the computer without commenting the drive out of my fstab
results in the green-dots boot splash lasting a very long time, eventually turning orange and producing various error messages. The only one I transcribed started off with blk_update_request: critical medium error
.
When I shut down before it finished turning off, I got the following terminal screen:
Linux Mint 18.1 Serena dt tty 1
dt login: [ 5840.759433] blk_update_request: critical medium error, dev sdb, sector 0
[ 5840.759523] Buffer I/O error on dev sdb, logical block 0, async page read
Those two error messages repeated (slowly, a significant delay between each) several times with increasing timestamps until the machine eventually powered off. The gap before the second time the message showed was approx. 17 seconds. Didn't get a picture any further on, but it went for maybe half a dozen more repeats. Those were roughly the errors seen on attempted boot, as well.
I've just noticed that the little light on the drive keeps flashing, and the drive keeps whirring softly when the computer is turned off. I am unable to recall whether this was the case when it was working properly.
Tried smartctl
:
~ $ sudo smartctl -i -A /dev/sdb
smartctl 6.5 2016-01-24 r4214 [x86_64-linux-4.8.0-56-generic] (local build)

Update ubuntu 16.04 base and crash... Uh oh!

The story is that I had dual boot option with win8 and debian jessie by grub. Now its over.
I was running debian when i pressed a button which by 1 keystroke darkens the screen and i left it so, and (after a time) the system got hybernated. I did it because i wanted to use my laptop as a music stand to keep the sheets during i am playing the guitar, and the screen was too bright. xD But the laptop has taken revenge...
When i pressed that button again, i encountered a vibrating screen (black and white). Its strange but by phisically moving (bending) the screen it stopped and i could use the system. I saved all the important files to another machine. Yet 2 times i was able to boot debian but no more. (white screen saying unable to start the system and i should log out although i didnt even log in).
Windows was still working, no vibrating and Disk Management showed that the partition of debian was in perfect condition. But I couldn't fix the problem of debian with Super grub2 disk and i decided to install lubuntu instead of debian. Deleting and formatting the partion of debian i tried to install lubuntu but i couldn't. It failed to install grub2 into the /target/ directory. It wasn't depending on which partition i say it to intall on. I couldn't choose the option "install grub later", nor interrupt the installation but it didn't freeze. I had to power it off manually.
Now i cant even start win8.
Notices when dual boot was working:
- at system start debian failed to load backlight controller
- first i had win8, then i shrinked the partion to get a new one for debian
- after installing debian windows' wifi connection became slow but debian's connection was ok
Any advice? Now i am planning to delete everything and just use 1 os as host, namely lubuntu but i thouht this problem worthes a question.
Thank you in advance.

I have had now three incidences of system failures in two weeks when the external display has been connected to it; it does not happen other times
- both displays go mad - big display goes gray bright, while the laptop display goes dark
- changing TTY not possible, no response taken; only way to power off the laptop at the situation.
I think it may be related to my Modesetting graphics, please, see the link below about Intel graphics for the setup.
Troubleshoot strategies
1. Take a ssh connection via RJ45 cable next time to the failed system. How can you troubleshoot during the system failure? How can you correct it? What is the most likely cause of the problem?
2. How can you troubleshoot postconditionally?
OS: Debian 8.5
Linux kernel: 4.6 backports
Hardware: Asus Zenbook UX303UA
Intel graphics: here
External display: BENQ XL2411 with HDMI cable
