I'd also like to use the default pdflatex instead of another engine. How should I fix this Permission denied problem?

TLDR: How do I troubleshoot a slow usb 3.1 device plugged into a laptop. ISSUE: When I copy (tried GUI and terminal) the first few .iso files copy almost instantly 300mb/s+, but then the 3rd/4th start to slow to below 12mb/s (even if copying one at a time). HARDWARE: - Dell XPS 15 9520 (Fedora Linux 37 - Workstation) - Sandisk Extreme GO USB 3.1 64GB (using Ventoy) - Dell USB-C to USB-A/HDMI Adapter - Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB-C PD Hub TRIED: - Reformatting usb (gparted - exfat). - Using USB with and without Ventoy installed. - Using different ports, different adapters/hubs. - Copying lots of .iso files in one go vs copying one file at a time - waiting until each file fully copied. Either way after a few files (around 4GB) the USB drive becomes very slow. Ejecting the USB (via GUI or terminal) can take a long time but after remounting fast speeds return. When ejecting using GUI I get message device busy - so now use terminal and wait until command has completed. DRIVER | PORT DETAILS:

I am having a problem with VLC when I play HQ videos (720p and higher): when I try to look for a particular scene (say I am playing a movie and want to get to go to 30 minute mark) the sound goes off. It doesn't happen always but it does happen frequently, and when I loose the sound is only on the video I am playing. I never have this problem on Parole Media Player, so I think something must be misconfiguled on VLC. How to troubleshoot high kernel time (high network usage; high interrupts)
I've noticed that I have high kernel time when doing a lot of network traffic in Linux. I also noticed that 45% of my CPU is spent doing interrupts. How can I further troubleshoot this?

I recently encountered a dual-boot issue on my Debian 12 system where Windows 10 was not showing up in the GRUB menu after a Debian update. I spent some time troubleshooting the problem and was able to resolve it. I wanted to share my experience in case others encounter a similar issue. **Issue Description**: After a Debian update, my GRUB bootloader stopped showing the option to boot into Windows 10. Initially, I believed my Windows partition was located at /dev/sda2, but it turned out to be at /dev/sda1.

I had a Linux mint system which was working fine until it froze and the "safe restart" of alt+Sysreq+REISUB didn't work, so I had to hard shutdown. After this the bootable SSD stopped getting detected at boot, even as a storage device. I bought a new SSD - it was detected the first time as storage, but the second time it stopped showing in boot. I tried lsblk or fdisk -l with live USB but it failed to show. The live USB works fine so the motherboard is fine, the data cables should be fine too as before the system froze there was no such issue. What other problem can there be?

I have a Gigabyte Mini PC I bought back in 2017. Initially I ran Ubuntu Desktop on it, and it ran fine for a couple of years. Then all of a sudden, it started randomly freezing, and I could only resolve it by rebooting the machine. The computer started to become kinda slow, and the issue persisted. I tried troubleshooting without any success or hints as to what might be the problem, so I eventually just abandoned it, put it in a closet, and got a new computer. Fast forward to today, I'm getting into home labbing, and I pulled out this "old" PC in hopes of repurposing it. I wiped it clean and installed Debian 12 on it. Ford the first few days, it ran flawlessly. I got excited thinking maybe it was some weird software issue, and that a fresh OS install might have helped. Then one day, I noticed upon waking it from sleep, it would often freeze on the user login screen... I'd have to put it to sleep and re-wake it, or straight up reboot it to get past the freeze. Now, it's escalated. I'll be using it, and suddenly a noticeable lag/slowness in performance will kick in. Then, the fan revs up and it will completely freeze on me. Only rebooting it helps. I am now starting to wonder if it's a hardware issue? My hope is that this Mini PC is still salvageable, and that I can use it as part of my home lab setup. Here are the hardware specs: - Intel Inside Core i7 - Iris Pro Graphics - 250 GB Samsung SATA SSD (6% used) As mentioned, I'm running Debian 12 on it. The mini PC model is GB-BXi7-5775 I'm at my ends reach trying to figure out what's wrong. ANY assistance with troubleshooting (what to look for, where to look for e.g. system logs, etc) would be immensely appreciated!

This is one of the weirdest issues I have ever had: When scrolling in Twitter in a browser, the laptop suddenly does a hard restart. This can happen multiple times a day or it can take a few days before it happens. I cannot provoke the error reliably. It started around September 2024. * The laptop passes RAM test (24h) * It happens both in Firefox and in Brave * Scrolling can be done by touchpad or page-down. Same issue. * Same issue when using Intel or nVidia driver * No issue scrolling in, say, Instagram or in programs like LibreOffice * Laptop passes CPU stress test (8 hours of: s-tui stress; glxgears; VLC playing 2 video streams at 8Mbps each) * Running kernel 6.8.0-40 gives same issue It is not due to cooling: The boot can happen a high load or a low load. Is there any stress test I can run on the graphics cards? My best guess is that the scrolling sometimes triggers some sort of bug in the cards. Maybe a new optimization introduced in August in X.org triggers this? Can I run a test of all X.org commands? Can I ask X.org to be "less optimized"? OS: Ubuntu GNU/Linux 24.04 Graphics cards: ~~~ 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 740M] (rev a1) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) ~~~ journalctl -b -1 looks like it would if the power just disappeared: 100% normal and then nothing.

My well cooled laptop surprisingly shutdown at about 5 am local time, when I was sleeping. If anyone could help me decipher from logs or whatever below, what was the real cause, I would appreciate it very much. I attach some minimalistic hw info + log. Yeah, I saw *critical temperature* in the log, but it has to be mistake or something. My laptop never overheats... Well, let's suppose it has been caused by overheating, for the sake of argument, what could have caused it? **Could those ACPI Errors cause Overheating?** The laptop had no reason to overheat, now exactly same VPN+torrents are running, and this is what sensors show:

GRUB fails to load Windows Boot Manager upon selection

I currently have Fedora 41 and Windows 11 installed on separate drives, but I'm having issues adding the Windows Boot Manager to the GRUB boot interface. Running sudo os-prober shows the Windows Boot Manager is identified, even without mounting anything, returning /dev/nvme0n1p1@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi:Windows Boot Manager:Windows:efi and when I ran sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg (even after mounting the Windows EFI) it says Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/nvme0n1p1@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi. But when I restart and select Windows Boot Manager in the GRUB interface, nothing happens. The interface effectively resets, and then when I select Fedora 41 I am unable to load Fedora and the following error is displayed: error: ../../grub-core/fs/fshelp.c:257:file `/vmlinuz-6.11.0-63.fc41.x86_64' not found error: ../../grub-core/loader/i386/efi/linux.c:258:you need to load the kernel first. Pressing escape and then entering exit in the GRUB terminal boots Windows normally, and if I restart and select Fedora 41 without trying to load Windows I am able to successfully boot Fedora. As far as I know, fast start and bitlocker encryption are both disabled. Any idea what might be going wrong here and how I can get this working properly?

blank screen after ipv6.disable=1 removal from grub cmdline
I want to re-enable IPv6 on my system which is currently disabled in GRUB directly. But if I remove `ipv6.disable=1`, I then get a blank (backlit) screen. I want to re-enable IPv6 on my system which is currently disabled in GRUB directly. But if I remove ipv6.disable=1, I then get a blank (backlit) screen. It took me tonight to figure out that I have a timeshift backup of OS (Linux Mint 21.3), I have then been able to revert to a 20-day old state. *** I have tested various combinations of GRUB cmdline via edit during boot. **The only change that seems to conflict with some parts of the boot process is removing ipv6.disable=1** from the grub cmdline, the same result goes for ipv6.disable=0. I have no clue what could be in conflict, literally no idea. *** Here is my grub config file before changes (my goal is to re-enable IPv6):
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=countdown
GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="fsck.mode=force fsck.repair=yes rootflags=data=journal ipv6.disable=1"
# GPU-related wakeup from suspend issue FIX
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0"
*** Any assistance is highly appreciated. *** ## MAJOR UPDATE, changes everything It actually does show my desktop after about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. (on my stopwatch) Some maybe useful info:

After about a month, I needed to disable IPv6 again, because it was causing the black/blank screen again. But now, I desperately need a solution. Why does re-enabling IPv6 cause my desktop to appear in 2 minutes and 15-30 seconds? (I stop-watched it, but it is hard to tell when to start, which is why I left there some space.) **I can SSH to this machine anytime since the blank screen.** There is absolutely nothing I can see that would be wrong, be it dmesg or systemd-analyze. There is just the following, I tried to _crack my head over it, but to no avail_. Any help appreciated:
# tail -f /var/log/syslog

How do I solve this FPS steep frame rate drop when gaming on Linux Mint?

Relevant specs from neofetch: OS = Linux Mint 21.1 x86_64 / Host = H310M H 2.0 / Kernel = 5.15.0-72-generic / DE = Xfce 4.16 / CPU = Intel i5-8400 (6) @ 4.000GHz / GPU = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti / Memory = 2381MiB / 15944MiB Footage of the issue with mangohud (top-left): **I have had this issue across a few linux distros**, some would cause a system-wide stutter and others would have drops in frame rate such as in the video. The one thing these cases had in common was that I would always observe the CPU usage going up as it occurred. These drops in performance have always happened at intervals and are consistent throughout all gameplay, lasting around 20 to 30 seconds, then operating normally for the same length of time. With mangohud enabled on my game I saw that **the CPU usage went up as the GPU went down**, which leads me to believe that this might be some hardware related issue. The weird thing is that when I first installed this OS, the problem seemed to have disappeared, now it's back. This makes me unsure if this is really hardware issue or software related. This happens with every game I play now, be it on Steam or a different launcher, using proton / wine or a game native to linux. Interestingly, when playing the game Deep Rock Galactic and observing the task manager, the CPU usage went from 10% to 60% for the Steam app instead of the game itself. I'm not sure what that means. How can I determine if this issue is caused by hardware or software? Is there a solution? I can share more information if it is needed. **EDIT:** I have already tried changing the driver version. I've used the nvidia drivers 530, 515 and 470, same problem on each one. I have also tried changing the shader pre-cache settings on Steam. I actually had *another 1050 Ti GPU from an older computer*. I put it in my computer and it ran a bit worse than my newer one but *the frame rate problem still persisted*. I also removed the GPU completely and ran Minecraft on **integrated graphics**, *the problem persisted still*. As far as I can tell, this problem doesn't occur while playing on Windows.

The wifi adapter in my laptop is Realtek RTL8852AE. I am currently dual-booting Windows 11 and Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. I've gone through multiple options for what it could be, installed rtw89's repository for the realtek driver. Another suggestion was that windows might be shutting off the adapter to conserve power, but an option for unticking that for the adapter wasn't available when I tried in Windows 11. Edit: The powermanagement tab does not appear when I go to properties for my network adapter in windows. I've tried enabling it with the CsEnabled registry key in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power and then rebooting, alas it does not appear. sudo lshw -C network output : *-network UNCLAIMED description: Network controller product: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 version: 00 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: ioport:2000(size=256) memory:d1600000-d16fffff *-network description: Ethernet interface physical id: 2 logical name: bnep0 serial: 14:5a:fc:1e:03:3a capabilities: ethernet physical configuration: broadcast=yes ip=192.168.44.197 multicast=yes output for sudo nmcli device: DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION 4C:4F:EE:E6:67:1F bt connected OnePlus 8 Network lo loopback unmanaged -- (I'm bluetooth tethering from my phone)
