I would like to run an app which nominally supports only MacOS 14.0 and above. I am on 12.7.3, and apple won't allow me to update because my computer is too old. However, I know that the app actually can run on my machine because when I run the executable in the app package (
game.app > Contents > MacOS > game
), it works just fine. Unfortunately, I need to be able to run the app itself because I need to run it through Steam to get networking functionality.
Running the app through the command line with open game.app
gives me the following error:
The application cannot be opened for an unexpected reason, error=Error
Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-10825 "kLSIncompatibleSystemVersionErr: The
app cannot run on the current OS version" UserInfo={_LSLine=3863,
_LSFunction=_LSOpenStuffCallLocal}
I have tried editing the info.plist
but there is no tag that seems to specify a minimum system version.
Is there anything in the app contents that I might be able to change to override this error? Or some kind of flag I can use to override it when running it from the terminal?
(Bonus: does anyone know how to make Steam open the app through the executable? This would also solve my problem.)

After updating my MacBook Pro to Mac OS Sonoma, I've tried to install Apple's **G**ame **P**orting **T**ool**k**it (GPTK).
I've followed the AppleGamingWiki guide .
----------
Unfortunately, after installing + starting Steam using these 2 commands, I get the error as shown below:
----------
I came across [a github issue](https://github.com/Whisky-App/Whisky/issues/41) that suggested to manually start
# Install
gameportingtoolkit ~/my-game-prefix ~/Downloads/SteamSetup.exe
# Run
gameportingtoolkit ~/my-game-prefix 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe'
Error:

steamwebhelper.exe
and steamservice.exe
before starting steam.exe
. I've tried that, but the same error occurs.
Somebody else [suggested](https://github.com/Whisky-App/Whisky/issues/41#issuecomment-1585640483) to copy the config
, registry.vdf
and userdata
files from the MacOs Steam to the Windows variant, again, the same error occurs.
Another [suggestion](https://github.com/Whisky-App/Whisky/issues/41#issuecomment-1601086964) that didn't work was to launch Steam using these arguments:
-allosarches -cef-force-32bit
.
----------
Does somebody know how to resolve this issue?

How to play 32-bit Steam games on macOS 12.6 (Monterey)?
Apparently since macOS Catalina 10.15 Mac disabled support for 32-bit apps? How can Steam games like Portal 2 be played on MacBooks that have been keeping up with macOS updates? In my case I'd like to do this on Intel MacBooks from 2015.

Short version is that I am wondering where macOS stores the list of open applications when a user logs out, such that they can be restored when the user logs back in (as part of macOS' **Resume** feature)?
For context, the reason I'm looking for this is that I believe I have an application that's "stuck" on this list, as when I turn **Resume** off the application (along with all others) no longer reopens on login, but when I reenable the feature it starts reopening again and I'd prefer that it didn't.
My best guess is that whichever file stores this list is somehow not updating properly (perhaps it isn't writeable for some reason?) but that disabling the feature bypasses it, however when reenabled (as I would like it to be) the problem returns because the application is still in the file somewhere.

Symptom: When I open any app that triggers my computer to switch to discrete graphics, such as Adobe Illustrator or games on Steam, my screen goes black (with a backlight). The only way to recover my screen is to either quit the app using the keyboard (if able) or reboot the mac.
I can also trigger the problem by switching to "Discrete Only" mode in gSwitch (which I installed only AFTER I started having the issue, so gSwitch is not itself the culprit).
Oddly, the discrete graphics card works normally shortly after a reboot. It starts acting oddly about a day after a fresh reboot. I have not been able to identify what triggers the graphics glitch.
Is there a way to "reset" my discrete GPU without rebooting each time?

My son wanted a game from steam, which said it required 40GiB disk space. Sure, done. Installed, but I noticed it was using 80GiB disk space, but didn't think much of it, until it decided to auto-patch and ran out of disk space.
Digging into the install, there's a single file, as reported by the Finder & ls, that is ~37GiB in size. It is using ~75GiB disk space according to the Finder and du.
Searching around, I see mention of timemachine snapshots (
sh$ pwd
/Users/zz/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Tropico 6/Tropico6.app/Contents/UE4/Tropico6/Content/Paks
sh$ ls -l pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak

sh$ du -h pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak
75G pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak

tmutil listlocalsnapshots
shows none), sparse files (no, they generally show the opposite, large eof and small usage), APFS compression (stat -f %f pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak
returns zero, and afscexpand
does nothing).
What could this be? A bad fallocate(2)
by steam (does Mac OS X even have that)? A copy of the file in another logical fork? Multiple write heads leading to some weird internal fragmentation? Something else? What weird thing has Apple managed to do this time?
So, the question is, what could possibly cause a 40GB file to require 80GB on Mac OS X? Is this an APFS bug?
PS: fwiw, a Duplicate+Delete+Rename in the Finder fixed this one file (ie. released 40GB disk space), and I assume thanks to the APFS clone functionality, did so without copying any data. And on a second attempt, I noticed that **just doing the duplicate** released the space.

Unfortunately it did not work for me with my two PS4 controllers, named differently, and the same Belkin dongle that was recommended.
The Belkin dongle allowed me to connect two PS4 controllers (which I resetted before connecting). It would not allow my mouse or Sony headphones to connect.
*Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time*, played via Steam, recognised that two controllers were connected, but the buttons did not work on one of them, only the direction stick in the menus.
I run Big Sur 11.2.3 on a Macbook Air M1.
Maybe the solution works on a Catalina Intel Mac. I don't know.
Any help appreciated!

I have a small problem with my mac. I'm currently restricted to game on my Macbook Pro (13"/2017/i5/iGPU iris 640/16gb) with macOS 10.15.7.
I can't do Bootcamp on this machine for disk-space reasons.
My idea was to run steam/dota on this machine, which seems totally doable as multiple tests/videos online show (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKcO2WytIMo) . I don't expect ultra graphics details or high fps, but a playable experience.
Unfortunately, when playing the game, the framerate is "bearable" (20-25 fps, even without ANY action) - but even in the lobby the fan of my Macbook goes up to max speed.
I play the game at the lowest possible resolution with lowest possible details. Launch options are
-vulkan -nojoy -noaafonts -novsync -console -novid
. switching to the opengl-renderer
doesn't change anything. all background programs closed.
Even worse - and that's the topic of this post - mouse and keyboard inputs are extremely (!!!) laggy. Individual clicks or key presses are NOT REGISTERED AT ALL! All controls feed laggy and "muchy", nice gameplay is impossible. Still, the game produces a "stable" 20-25 fps - so I assume there is some other reason for inputs being "dropped" here
Is there any way to fix this input lag or at least how to narrow down the issue?
Apparently, it IS possible to play this game on a Mac like mine, so the question is whats wrong with my machine?

I am using Mac Pro (Mid 2010), and I used the “sudo ping -i .2 192.168.0.1” command in terminal to monitor my ping. My ping stays constant at 1ms-3ms, but always rises to 100ms-200ms every 6 to 15 seconds. And these “spikes” happens literally every 6 to 15 seconds, but it doesn’t go crazy until 1000 ping or even over.
The lag hits me a lot since I am playing Counter-Strike Global Offence on Mac, which the ping spike can be clearly felt.
The weird thing is that I am not running any program that uploads or downloads, and the lag only happens in this specific computer. The lag doesn’t happen on my laptop and all. What is going on? My speculation of this problem is probably my computer appears to be sending out files or signals hiddenly, and this is when the ping rises, but I just can’t figure out what is going on.
The connection used to be fine. Is it a problem with hidden network features within my Mac or what? I was about to try to disable SSDP service, which seemed to be the cause of lag of few of my friends, but I just don’t know how to, since its Mac.
Any help would be appreciated.

When I run Portal on my MBP with no external screen connected I get a solid 60 fps. When I connect and mirror another screen (same resolution and game settings) it drops to 30 fps, sometimes 20, and has a very noticeable impact on game experience.
It's the same regardless of which video output port I use.
Graphics power saving is disabled.
I have tried to find confirmation that screen mirroring negatively affects performance, but I've only stumbled upon assertions that it doesn't and shouldn't. But I've tested this many times and it's very reproducible.
- How is mirroring implemented / why does it affect performance this much?
- Is the only way to get decent game performance to buy an external keyboard and close the lid / tape a magnet to the screen / use terminal hack?
*MBP 15" mid 2014*
**Update on V-sync**
As Phong correctly suspected, it's related to vsync. Without it I get some ridiculous 150+ fps and good responsiveness, although I'm reluctant to turn it off because of the tearing.
It's still a bit of a mystery how screen mirroring is interacting with and affecting vsync though.
The MBP screen is 60 Hz, and the external screen also receives a 60 Hz signal. Changing the game resolution doesn't affect the video signal (always 1080p), but matching the output and game resolution (e.g. 720p@60) still gives similar symptoms.

since I can't see any good reason why Steam should need this. Why would Steam need this?

I've just installed the latest WineBottler v2.0 from https://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads .
I clicked on the supplied Steam install button, and ended up with a new application in my application folder - I called it Steam-winebottler.app because I've already got the standard Mac Steam.app.
Steam-winebottler.app launched fine, did various updates, and eventually gave me what looks like a log-in window without any of the usual text.
What I mean is I can see the Steam logo, the Valve logo, and what looks like boxes for password and username entry, but not text saying "Password" or "User name" or "Click to continue" or anything like that.
Here's a screenshot:
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19444
mentions a problem: Steam client window(s) do(es)n't render any text.
which says "Ensure Steam client is launched as follows...
wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite"
It looks like that's the problem I've got, but I can't see a way to apply the fix when using the WineBottler approach.
I'd appreciate any clues.
Thank you.

SPARSEIMG="/Users/Shared/Steam/steam.sparseimage"
if [ ! -e "${MOUNTPT}" ]; then
echo "sudo mkdir -m0777 ${MOUNTPT}"
sudo mkdir -m0777 "${MOUNTPT}"

if [ ! -e "${SPARSEIMG}" ]; then
hdiutil create -type SPARSE -fs 'Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+' -size 32g "${SPARSEIMG}"

hdiutil attach -mountpoint "${MOUNTPT}" -nobrowse "${SPARSEIMG}"
Can anyone tell me what I am not doing correctly?

However, there is a peculiar window showing up, and whenever I try launching a game/app, it pops the usual window with "Preparing to launch...", then it disappears and nothing happens.
The image on top shows the unusual window showing up next to the main window.
This is my setup in Wineskin of Steam (needs -no-dwrite because else, it shows blank buttons).
[Here](http://pastebin.com/Ad7ZDppy) and [here](http://pastebin.com/Ea3tfVvj) are the 2 Last Run log files.

UPDATE:
Reinstalling didn't help, and I figured out what the little window is. On Mavericks, it was on the navbar on top, and on yosemite, it is in this window. Clicking it shows the same options as the Steam icon on the navbar on Mavericks. Also, I may have found something related in the logs: err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Makesure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution. --- I am using OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

When running the application from the command line and then attempting to exit, at first nothing appears in the output, but after a minute or so the following is logged:
KQ: Error Unregistering write event KQ:Operation now in progress
