How to get Wine working on Catalina?

After upgrading to Catalina, Wine no longer works at all. When I attempt to launch my "Wine Stable" app, I get the following message: > “Wine Stable.app” needs to be updated. The developer of this app needs > to update it to work with this version of macOS. Contact the developer > for more information. From the winehq.org forum, it appears my only option is to revert back to Mojave or to find another Mac somewhere, neither of which are options I would really like to pursue. Does anyone have any other options?

Everything I can find for Wine or Wineskin is either long untouched or **appears** to be maintained but says "up to 10.15" A possible exception is the one installed by brew, which doesn't say what versions it will work on. I did find the brew version suggested for Ventura, but that was on reddit—not exactly a high-quality source. (Particularly suspect since it also suggests the apparently obsolete Wineskin as an alternative.) I prefer Wineskin for the ability to have self-contained "wrappers" but a simple Wine that works is OK. Any pointer to a version of either ***known to work on Ventura***? UPDATE: I just learned about PlayOnMac which also uses Wine. But where I heard about it called it a "free program from Apple." It is not from Apple, which makes me a bit suspicious about whether it is "safe" to install.

Using a "wine"-like app to format and mount NTFS volumes on macOS?

There are several apps (Wine wrappers) which can help executing windows executables on macOS. This is similar to what a VM does. As we know, we can use a VM to mount, read, and format NTFS drives. Can we do the same thing with Wine or a similar app? After all, wine contains the important components of the Windows OS. Edit: It seems some has the view that we should simply consider other ways to use NTFS on mac instead of looking into this approach. This is absurd: what's wrong with doing things in a different way with significant advantage (e.g. less RAM consumption than VM, and also advantage over many other methods)?

I am encountering an issue with Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition. I purchased the game on Steam but, on account of it only being available for Windows, I tried using Porting Kit (https://www.portingkit.com/ ) to play on my mac. My setup: - 2017 iMac, CPU: 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel i7, RAM: 40 GB DDR4, GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 580 with 8 GB VRAM - macOS Ventura 13.4.1 - Wine stable 8.0.1, installed via homebrew - Porting Kit 5.14.4 What I attempted thus far: Library install: * went to the Porting Kit library, searched for AOE 3 DE, and pressed install; * the process seems to have run smoothly, with no issues; * after the install is finished, I press Play, and I see some app with the Steam logo starting, but it is only visible in the dock * I can see, for a short time, a little status window that displays a progress bar (Steam updating) but it goes away after a while * there are wine processes running (confirmed with Activity Monitor) but I can't see the actual window of the application (Windows Steam) Manual wrapper creation * in the Porting Kit library, I click on New Custom Port * give it a name, selected Wine (I have the experimental features activated), and then Standard Options * in the wizard I select the latest WineCX engine at this moment "WS11WineCX64Bit22.1.1-5", check the Steam and DXVK checkboxes then go on with the creation of the wrapper * the wizard runs its course and I get no error, but when I try to access the newly created wrapper, I get the same result as for the library install If the experimental features are turned off, the DXVK checkbox is not displayed, so I only select Steam in the wizard, but the result is still the same. I also tried to create a wrapper with a slightly older version of the WineCX engine (21), and in this case, Steam starts and I manage to log in and install the game. However, when I actually attempt to start the game, I see the AOE III DE splash screen and then a window appears, that says that my hardware does not support DirectX and that I have 0 MB of VRAM (even though I have 8 GB), and the "Attempt to run" button is greyed out, and all I can do is exit the game. Could you please give me a hand in figuring out what the issue is and, maybe, how to fix it? Thank you, Calin

Running macOS Sierra(Version 10.12.2 16C67). I installed Wine version wine-1.8.6 (through a .pkg file). I opened up a game and it worked fine. The next day when I downloaded Origin installer, it wouldn't open. When I double clicked on it, the Wine icon showed up in the dock and said it was open, but no windows showed up. When I clicked on another program(or on the desktop), Wine closed. Now when I try to start that same game I opened when I first installed Wine, the same thing happens that happened when I started Origin installer. When I go to the terminal and type wine {path of .exe} I got this: enter image description here I installed wine tricks using brew install winetricks and it installed fine, yet it didn't change my situation. winecfg works properly, and so does sh winetricks.

In 2020 or 2021 I installed a Wineskin wrapper for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (HOMM3) on my Mac. I now need to back all those files up, but I have issues trying to locate where the save games are actually stored, meaning the folder typically stored in ~/.wine/drive_c/ in standard Wine install. There is no .wine folder, of course. I have searched all of my $HOME drive for 'AUTOSAVE.CGM' and other save game files, but no go. I have also searched for drive_c and other variations, still no go. I found the launchers/wrappers in the $HOME/Applications/Wineskin folders, so also tried searching them:
find  ~/Applications/Wineskin/Heroes\ of\ Might\ and\ Magic\ 3\ HD.app/drive_c/ -iname '*cgm'
No go. It is like it is on some shadow drive?
$ find . -iname '*cgm'
$ find . -iname '*h3m' | wc -l
     159
$ pwd
/Users/myuser/Applications/Wineskin/Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD.app/drive_c
$ du -chs .
1.2G	.
1.2G	total
To be honest, I don't really remember installing Wineskin myself, and the recommended installation of using Homebrew should list something when doing brew list right? But it does not. So either it is Crossover (doubt it) or Wineskin. From folder names, definitely looks like the latter, but I could also just have gotten a finished wrapper. The problem of locating the drive remains, either way :) Related .

wine-stable supports both 32-bit and 64-bit. It is compatible with an existing
32-bit wine prefix, but it will now default to 64-bit when you create a new
wine prefix. The architecture can be selected using the WINEARCH environment
variable which can be set to either win32 or win64.
I can run IrfanView app like here:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/iview460_x64/i_view64.exe
00c4:fixme:imm:ImeSetActiveContext (0x257ae0, 0): stub
00c4:fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0000000000010020, 0000000000257AE0): stub
0024:fixme:imm:ImeSetActiveContext (0x174690, 1): stub
0024:fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0000000000020050, 0000000000174690): stub
but I can't do same with it's 32-bit counterpart:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/iview460/i_view32.exe
00c4:err:wow:load_32bit_module failed to load dll c0000034
The thing is I am trying to run other software Jpegcrop which is another small (single .exe file) win 32-bit application which doesn't have its 64-bit equivalent and it's failing in identical way as 32-bit IrfanView above:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/jpegcrop.exe
00c4:err:wow:load_32bit_module failed to load dll c0000034
While it seems impossible to get the Jpegcrop 64-bit binary version from the developer and I am now forced to use only 64-bit apps (MacOS 10.15 Catalina) - is there any alternative way to run this app with Wine on my Mac?

I would like to be able to run some old Windows and/or DOS games and applications on my M1 Mac. If I have an .exe file that would run on an Intel mac using Boxer or Wine, what's the best low-cost solution for an M1 Mac? I can't afford Parallels or equivalent for this. I don't want to reboot into a different drive to achieve this. Wine and WineBottler do not appear to work. When I try to install them, Wine will not copy over to my Applications folder. Does Wine work with M1 Macs? It's not mentioned explicitly on their site , but `https://wiki.winehq.org/ARM `. Is there a solution involving running QEmu, installing Linux and running an emulator inside Linux? Is this realistic, or is the performance unacceptable? I'm not planning to run high-end graphics here - just some old abandonware or equivalent.

Hello, all. I have been using *Wineskin Winery* to run Windows programs for almost a decade at this point, and though I have already gone through my fair share of issues (using winetricks, checking engine versions, etc), a Wine app has mysteriously stopped working because seemingly wine is not detected. For years, an old Wineskin app had been working faithfully for me, until I decided to go and install *Porting Kit* (which is the semi-successor to Wineskin Winery, and is suppose to be able to run the former's apps). Now, my app does not open, and the Test log reports this: sh: wine: command not found Homebrew installed wine, and if which wine is ran in Terminal, I get /usr/local/bin/wine, so why would Porting Kit report not finding it? This does not look like a simple PATH issue, and I have tried uninstalling and installing wine already. It would be appreciated it if the community could share any suggestions on what I could do to fix this.

Some googling around suggested that this might be due to not having Samba installed on my system. I installed it and started the Samba server, but I still get the same error. Any ideas about what else I could check?

instead (following the last answer in https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/373851/how-to-get-wine-working-on-catalina/380068#380068?newreg=553f3ccca2fd48f1afd0f8c215a1d070) . I especially paid attention to the **NOTE** in that answer, so I removed my original
~/.wine
folder. Then I downloaded Windows version of
here . In terminal, I typed
~/Downloads/OpenBUGS323setup.exe
, it shows: (base) DengdeMacBook-Air:~ deng$ wine64 ~/Downloads/OpenBUGS323setup.exe 001b:err:ntoskrnl:ZwLoadDriver failed to create driver L"\\Registry\\Machine\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\wineusb": c0000142 000f:fixme:service:scmdatabase_autostart_services Auto-start service L"wineusb" failed to start: 1114 0020:err:plugplay:runloop_thread Couldn't open IOHIDManager. 0009:err:module:__wine_process_init L"Z:\\Users\\deng\\Downloads\\OpenBUGS323setup.exe" not supported on this system (base) DengdeMacBook-Air:~ deng$ wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF at address 00007FFF37F26E16 (thread 001c), starting debugger... 001c:err:seh:start_debugger Couldn't start debugger L"winedbg --auto 24 96" (1115) Read the Wine Developers Guide on how to set up winedbg or another debugger and just stuck here. Any ideas?

How to search for a hidden file in Mac OS?
I need to find a Wine .exe file (winefile.exe) I just installed, but I don`t know where it is, so, besides showing hidden files, I need to find the specific file. Thanks for help.
