I have a MacBook Pro 2015 which is capable of running MacOS 12 but I've been stuck back at MacOS 10.14 Mojave just to keep my Adobe Creative Suite 6 running. I'd like to move the applications to a virtual machine running on 10.8 Mountain Lion (first version to support both 32-bit and native 64-bit apps).
I understand that 3D acceleration won't be supported but would the performance be comparable? Is it even possible?

wine-stable supports both 32-bit and 64-bit. It is compatible with an existing
32-bit wine prefix, but it will now default to 64-bit when you create a new
wine prefix. The architecture can be selected using the WINEARCH environment
variable which can be set to either win32 or win64.
I can run IrfanView app like here:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/iview460_x64/i_view64.exe
00c4:fixme:imm:ImeSetActiveContext (0x257ae0, 0): stub
00c4:fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0000000000010020, 0000000000257AE0): stub
0024:fixme:imm:ImeSetActiveContext (0x174690, 1): stub
0024:fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0000000000020050, 0000000000174690): stub
but I can't do same with it's 32-bit counterpart:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/iview460/i_view32.exe
00c4:err:wow:load_32bit_module failed to load dll c0000034
The thing is I am trying to run other software Jpegcrop which is another small (single .exe file) win 32-bit application which doesn't have its 64-bit equivalent and it's failing in identical way as 32-bit IrfanView above:
wine64 /Users/msciwoj/Applications/Wineskin/jpegcrop.exe
00c4:err:wow:load_32bit_module failed to load dll c0000034
While it seems impossible to get the Jpegcrop 64-bit binary version from the developer and I am now forced to use only 64-bit apps (MacOS 10.15 Catalina) - is there any alternative way to run this app with Wine on my Mac?

I want to install the 64-bit OS X 10.7 on my MacbookPro 2,1, which has a 64-bit processor, but only 32-bit EFI and Kernel Boot mode.
I know that this is not officially supported, but I assume there is some workaround since the hardware provides everything needed to run a 64-bit OS, except for the EFI.
"Select Startup Mode" tells me, that: *"While your Mac is technically able to run a 64-bit kernel, this is not currently enabled by Apple."*
How can I get that to work? Is there an unsupported hack or workaround?

After I upgraded my macOS to Catalina on my MacBook Pro 2018 (13.3", i5, 16GB RAM, TouchBar), Google Earth Pro will not open anymore.
When I launch the app, it opens the window but it will freeze and there's this annoying spinning beach ball. I have to force quit to quit the application.
What I've tried:
- I installed an older version of Google Earth Pro, but that did not solve the issue.
- I also cleared out the cache, turned off atmosphere, and my places in the repair window.
Does anyone have the same issue, is there anyway to fix this?
I can use the online (browser) version, but I'd like to use the application because it has more functionality.

I've been using Quicktime 7's "Movie to Image Sequence" and "Open Image Sequence" export and import options forever. It's useful for creating and working with time-lapses, modifying a single frame or a couple of frames in a video, creating short animated gifs, etc.
Unfortunately Quicktime 7 is 32-bit, so once I upgrade to Catalina it will be gone forever. I'd like a recommendation for a 64-bit app with similar features: the ability to export every frame of a movie to a sequence of still images, and construct a new movie at a specified frame rate from a set of still images.
Is there any good replacement for this Quicktime 7 feature? Free is optimal but not necessary.

Activity monitor should have column on the CPU tab to show Kind, but it isn't there and the menu to add columns doesn't include it.
System Profiler should have a column for "64 big (intel)" but it doesn't and I can't see any options for adding/removing columns there.

Does anyone have any ideas whether there will be any way to run these apps, perhaps in a wrapper? No, booting another OS is not a solution. Is there any info on this issue at all?

I have a user that has High Sierra (don't ask why) just that he has it, and he is getting an error stating that parts of his VMWare are not 64-bit compatible.
I expect he will need to upgrade to 11, which is almost a given, but here is my question. If there are instances inside his VM that are 32-Bit compliant only, are they talking about the apps inside his VM? Or are they talking about the VM itself?
I ask this because I went onto the website to look up the information and it's rather sparse. I was hoping the big brains here would be able to help me clear this up a little.
If the message is pertaining to the software inside the VM, I can get one of the techs here to pistolwhip him into submission by actually following protocol.
Otherwise, I'll just tell him to use a VDI as he should be anyway.

From my research, it seems that macOS transitioned from 32-bit x86 to 64-bit x64 across the following versions:
Kernel App Support
10.4 Tiger x86 x86
10.5 Leopard x86 x86/x64
10.6 Snow Leopard x86/x64 x86/x64
10.7 Lion x86/x64 x86/x64
10.8 Mountain Lion x64 x86/x64
10.9 - 10.12 ... x64 x86/x64
That is:
1. Support for x64 apps was added in 10.5.
2. A 64-bit kernel was introduced in 10.6, and the 32-bit kernel was removed in 10.8.
3. It is possible to run 32-bit apps with a 64-bit kernel and (unlike Linux and Windows) 64-bit apps with a 32-bit kernel.
Is this accurate?

But for a smartphone, which (afaik) doesn't have more than 4GB of ram, what's the point? what is the benefit?
What kind of apps benefit from it that will really make a difference ?
**Specific examples of apps taking advantage would be nice.**
Do final users will even notice a difference? Or is it just a marketing strategy?
Note, i know a similar question has been answered here: https://superuser.com/q/56540/152803
but in this one i ask specifically for smartphones, that one is focused on Intel/AMD architecture. Besides, that answer is now more than 4 years old...

It has been hinted at in the past but now we're starting to see solid notice from Apple that it is dropping support for 32-bit macOS programs in the near future. While I can see how this makes sense in the walled garden of iOS, the macOS / OS X environment has always been a bit more flexible in that you could run older software.
We dealt with this when Apple dropped PowerPC and Rosetta, but the change of CPU architecture was a bit more obvious since it was apples-to-oranges. However, the difference here is that our x86_64 platforms can still natively run 32-bit x86 code. It is simply a decision by Apple to cut off 32-bit code. Sure, it is great to get rid of old stuff but it also cuts off useful software which might not be maintained anymore.
I'm curious what benefit actually comes from dropping support for 32-bit software. Is there any measurable performance gain that we would see from there no longer being support for 32-bit apps running next to 64-bit ones? Or is it simply that Apple doesn't want to maintain the 32-bit APIs and support libraries anymore and this is simply cleaning house?
