Where Does macOS Store Resume Data?

Short version is that I am wondering where macOS stores the list of open applications when a user logs out, such that they can be restored when the user logs back in (as part of macOS' **Resume** feature)? For context, the reason I'm looking for this is that I believe I have an application that's "stuck" on this list, as when I turn **Resume** off the application (along with all others) no longer reopens on login, but when I reenable the feature it starts reopening again and I'd prefer that it didn't. My best guess is that whichever file stores this list is somehow not updating properly (perhaps it isn't writeable for some reason?) but that disabling the feature bypasses it, however when reenabled (as I would like it to be) the problem returns because the application is still in the file somewhere.

Notice: This is not a duplicate! Other questions had to do with older versions of OS X or had to do with temporarily disabling resume. El Capitan has made my iMac very, very slow. A hard reboot should clean the slate so I can recover from OS hangs, but now windows and programs that were open when I shut the iMac down (with the power button) are restored to their previous states. How can I disable this completely? I do NOT want to have to select a button every time I shutdown/restart, which is something I cannot do if I use the hardware reset.

Since Mac OS X Lion introduced the Resume feature, where applications save their open windows and document states, compatible applications have stored their window states to disk in the directory ~/Library/Saved Application State, in directories like com.apple.finder.savedState. However in my Saved Application State directory, there is no com.apple.Preview.savedState. When I launch Preview.app, it does remember all its open windows and their states, but I cannot find where the state is stored on disk. It does not appear in the usual location. Can you help me find where Preview.app is saving its window states?

When resuming music playback after a break (10 minutes, few days, another app playing content) it ignores whatever playlist, album, artist or other refinement was placed on the music list and simply plays at random from the entire library. Is there a way to set it so that resuming playback will resume in the playlist it was last playing? If the music app is opened directly, it remembers where it was, so why not when using the play button on the lock screen, or when attaching a Bluetooth device, or plugging it into a speaker? For example, I was playing Christmas music on a speaker system at home. I unplugged the iPod 5, went out to my car, automatically paired to the Apple compatible in dash Bluetooth and resumed playback. It picked up where it left off in the same song it was playing, but showed the number of songs in the entire library (not the playlist) and shuffled to another song in the library after the current song, not in the previously loaded playlist. I had to unlock the iPod, open the music app, return to the main screen, select playlists, select the desired playlist, select a song and then play. That's a lot of steps to resume playing a music playlist on a music playing device (especially while driving). For another example, I was listening to a playlist using the built in speaker of my iPod 5. I took a phone call, so I swiped up and pressed pause. While on the phone, I used another app, then set the iPod down. After the phone call, I pressed the home button and simply pressed play on the lock screen. Same as above, it resumed the song it was on, but then randomly went off to another song not in the playlist. Upon unlocking and loading the music app, it wasn't in playlist anymore, but simply shuffling the entire library.

When I restart yosemite and I select 'reopen windows when loggin back in' I have a lot of apps that open in the same space. For example when I have sublime text and libreoffice open in a space and restart, the space they they were on will be empty. They will all be on a single space but only in the mission control view and not in the actual space. In contrast to safari and other osx native apps. I would just like to be able to shut down my macbook and resume in the exact same way. Is there a setting for the apps to resume in the space there were on, fully openened?

I have a MacBook late 2008 aluminum model (5,1). Occasionally, after reopening my MacBook's lid, the screen doesn't light up. With effort I can see that the password prompt is actually rendered very faintly on the screen. *Very briefly*, for a split second, the screen does seem to flash on before going dark (consistently). I tried closing and reopening the lid multiple times and changing the brightness, but no luck. The only way I know of getting out of this is to hold the power button and do a hard reboot. This started happening after doing a clean reinstall of OS X 10.8. I upgraded very recently from 10.5, where I never encountered this issue. I'm pasting below the relevant time slice from my system.log (which involved several iterations of closing/reopening the lid) - I didn't notice anything helpful here. Any way on God's green earth to disable resuming applications after a crash?

Using OS 10.6.8 Every month or two I'll have a hard crash on my MacBook Pro and I'll have to force reboot by holding down the power button. No big deal, I've been doing this on various macs since 1995 since OS version 7.1. What drives me absolutely bonkers in 10.6.x is that in certain cases like a hard power-cycle, OS X Snow Leopard insists on resuming all 20 or 30 applications I had running before the hard reboot. Is there some way to tell the OS just never ever ever (ever!) to resume my applications at boot time? I've done everything I can via system preferences and tinkertool of course. Please help! It takes literally 20-30 minutes for my computer to get up and going in some cases (16 GB RAM, tons of applications running) and if this happens while I'm with a client it's incredibly embarrassing. I just want a fresh start. Do I have better options in 10.7+?

I've been running a python script from the command line that's inserting data in a database for a couple of hours now. It will take at least half a day more before it's finished. However, I want to take the laptop with me to somewhere else. My sleep at closing lid settings (if they exist) are at default (I've never looked at them). If I close the lid and open it in 4 or 5 hours, will the python script resume from where it left off? If not, can this be set to work in the preferences somehow?

Lion opens lots of windows automatically after a restart. How can I stop that?
Lion opens lots of windows automatically after a restart. How can I stop that? It's _very_ annoying. Is there a way to stop this? I found an option in System Preferences ("Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps") and disabled it but it doesn't seem to affect anything.

I'm using Mac App Store on Lion, But there is a problem with download resume. After every system restart I can't resume my previous downloads and I have to download them from the beginning, I also checked and I have no AppStore directory at this path ~/Library/Application Support/ AppStore store the temp files at a directory in /private/var/folders/s1/ ... /com.apple.appstore/ But after restarting the computer and opening the AppStore it deletes all the contents of this directory, and I have to start the downloads all over again. I also tried restarting AppStore in debug mode but it didn't work. I'm wondering if someone have a solution for this issue. Regards

Is there a searchable list of applications that support OS X's resume/autosave/iCloud features?
I just upgraded to Lion and I'd like to know what applications support OS X's resume/autosave/iCloud features. Is there a searchable list of applications that support these features? Update: This question also includes Mountain Lion.

Is there a way to check whether an app explicitly supports Resume or not?
Is there any way to check whether an app explicitly supports [Lion's new Resume feature][1] or not? For example, as of right now, Safari supports Resume, meaning all the tabs are reopened, however in Google Chrome, this is not the case. Since recently upgrading to "Lion 10.7.3", I have had repeated instances of the machine hanging/crashing without warning and then silently restarting. While this is annoying enough, the point of this question is to address what happens next: After the automatic restart, Lion reopens most/all of the applications that were running before the crash. **This is a problem because:** 1. It takes a long time, and 2. I think the original crash maybe related to memory use and restarting a large set of application means the computer is that much closer to hanging again. So, **how can I prevent resuming all/most applications when OSX restarts silently after a crash?** Unlike other posts , I would like to keep resume working for normal shutdowns/logoffs, and just prevent resume after hangs/crashes. **Notes:** - The "Restart automatically if the computer freezes" System options (both power and battery) are NOT checked. (Why the system is restarting at all, is the topic of another question ) - I say "most" applications b/c X11, Zotero standalone (and others?) do not resume after a crash. Pretty much everything else does (ex: Word, Excel, Matlab, iTunes, Stickies, Chrome, LyX, etc.)

OS X Lion: App-Specific Resume
I know there's a system wide preference to disable 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps', but is there any way to have it restore only specific apps?. I would like to have Safari open in full screen every time I launch it.

I have disabled the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" checkbox in the General preferences pane in Lion, but after a recent sudden power loss (no battery) my iMac restarted in exactly the same state as I had left it the night before. What feature of Lion is making this (miracle) possible, and how do I ensure that it remans enabled? --- I read for example that I can "disable Resume", because it "duplicates" something called "Safe Sleep", but I'm not sure what any of these features are, how they are related, or how I can control them. For example, does the behavior I saw in my recent power loss mean that my machine had gone to sleep between my last use and the power failure, or is some kind of snapshotting taking place continuously in the background? I also understand that there are different "kinds " of sleep. If sleep is indeed necessary, do different triggers (keyboard, script, idle, etc.) for sleep result in different "kinds" of sleep.
