There is an option for this in the preferences dialog, but I am looking for a way to do it in the commandline so that all these configurations can be automated. I want to avoid xmodmap, because most of my system settings are done through gsettings, it's preferred to have this one also in a centralized place. Plus I don't like maintaining startup scripts, I would rather run a config script once and forget about the whole thing afterwards, and gsettings/gconftool-2 does that.

I've been trying to compile x11/gnome2 under FreeBSD 10.0-REL, but have been running into all sorts of issues. Eventually I found things indicating that gnome2 is no longer really supported, and that I should use something else (MATE, Xfce, KDE, whatever) instead. But gnome2 installs a trillion other packages, none of which I actually want if I'm not going to be using Gnome. So "make install" of gnome2 has failed, but not before installing a few billion packages that I don't want. I'd like to get rid of them before starting an install of Xfce or whatever. How can I easily delete those that aren't needed by anything that doesn't ultimately go back go the gnome2 package? So, in a perfect world I'd like a command that says: "Figure out all packages that are supposed to be installed via gnome2 (including recursively). For each such package, if it is installed, uninstall it *unless* there is some installed package that needs it and that is *not* among those installed via gnome2 (including recursively)." Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks in advance.

Windows in Gnome on Ubuntu 10.10 are frozen

I saw a question in SuperUser titled How do I restart a frozen screen in Ubuntu without losing any open windows? and I think it would be helpful, but the problem is I can't switch to any of the TTYs. I'm trying to switch to tty 1 with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and it doesn't work, and honestly I even can't say if it has ever worked before. I tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 with no effect. The problem already occured one time about one month ago and fixed after 3 hours of waiting but this time the difference is that the cursor is moving and the clock is working right. Moreover all system monitor indicators show current state of hardware so it seems that the processor, disc, RAM and swap are also working. It happened during moving a terminal window to another part of workspace which is displayed on second monitor. And, what is strange, I can see mini dialog box with the resolution of the window that I have never seen before. Trying to unplug the second monitor didn't help. What can I do to unfreeze it and to not lose unsaved data?

I've been messing around with my system too much and messed something up. I'm new to Ubuntu, but have been using linux on servers for a few years. I'm not sure of the correct terminology so I'm including screen shots to explain what is going on. First, system specs: > Ubuntu 10.4 LTS x64 Lucid Core i7-970 Nvidia GTX 480 Dual Screen with Twinview Nvidia proprietary dev driver 260.24 (64-bit) Now what I screwed up: First major customization was ppa:goehle/goehle-ppa customizations for keeping evolution open after closing the main window. That worked fine until I started messing with getting hibernate working. I never got hibernate working even after installing linux-generic-tuxonice; it gave a warning about usb09 not stopping. The only things that I have in USB are a keyboard and mouse. Then I started getting the error: The panel encountered a problem while loading Trying to fix this, I reinstalled the Evolution customizations. The error persists and now the panel is messed up as well. I'm not getting the application icons, the menu with the chat status, or the shutdown/restart/lock screen menu. This is what it should look like: Expected panel But this is what I'm getting now: Actual panel How do I get my icons back? --- **EDIT:** I found how to get my application icons back. 1. Right-click on panel 2. Add to Panel ... 3. Notification Area. I still have not figured out what the chat bubble menu and power menu are called.

I've just reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, and I'm trying to get SSH pubkey authentication working via X11 applications. Specifically, I'm trying to use baobab to display the usage of a remote filesystem, and I need to SSH in as root but root has no password, so I need to use an SSH key to authenticate. In the terminal, if I ssh root@theserver, I get right in with no password, but if I use Baobab or Nautilus to connect, it asks me for my password. How can I have it use my SSH key? I'm using GNOME in case it matters. On my previous install this worked, and I don't know if I did something before to make it work. If so, I've forgotten what… In fact, my previous install would pop up an X11 dialog asking for my SSH private key password if I needed to unlock it. How do I make that happen again?

I have a number of versions of GNOME installed on a number of different hosts. All users have network mounted home directories. In some cases GNOME works poorly when reading configuration from the .gnome2 directory. I would like to read config files from version specific directories. Is there any way to specify this when starting GNOME? Environment variables perhaps? I know how to move the .gconf directories but this is not sufficient. I need to read the .gnome2 from a different path.

I've recently installed Debian Squeeze on a new machine, and decided to try out the default GNOME setup rather than attempt to do everything myself. I added a printer using *System > Administration > Printing* — it found my network printer just fine. However, when powering on the machine this printer is disabled. I have to go to the same dialog as above, enter the root password and enable the printer manually before jobs will be accepted. Any ideas on how to enable the printer automatically? Note that it's quite possible that the printer is turned on *after* the computer, if this makes a difference. Either way it would be nice if the computer noticed when the printer was turned on.

I do not simply want an icon on the task bar for launching xeyes, but rather have the animated eyes appear on the taskbar and not in a separate window. I'm fairly sure I had it this way on a debian distribution about 10 years ago. I am currently running squeeze and my desktop environment is GNOME 2.30.2.

It make user confused (e.g. gedit foo.txt breaks and I have to run pluma foo.txt) They are almost the same as the original ones. Wasn't it better they send their modification to main branch?

I have Centos 6.4 with Gnome2, I'm accessing it through its xrdp (Version 0.5.0) and Xvnc TigerVNC 1.1.0 services. The clients machine are an Android tablet and a Windows 7 PC, these are using different screen resolutions for the connection. I close the connections with gnome-session-save --kill. I saw an article recommending to rebuild xrdp for this purpose another thread suggests that a newer version would do it, but I would stick to this version if there is a configuration that will do what I am after: to have the same session if same user logs in. Although it would be a big compromise, but even forcing the sessions to the same size and limiting the available sessions to 1 session per 1 user would do it if it works as expected. Can somebody suggest me a workaround for this or I have no options left, have to grab and try a newer version?

I have implemented my own lock screen through dbus, user screen lock (Alt+L) through xbindkeys, and that's pretty much all I want them to be able to do. I have an installation script for root to perform but for now, unfortunately, for every user root creates he has to go to gconf-editor or through the System->Keyboard Shortcuts->Disable, Disable, Disable,... sequence. Is there a way to run a command to remove all keyboard mappings for a user? Maybe through gconftool-2?

But the problem is this, the background of every scroll bar, and the foreground of the scroll bar, both become red, this makes it impossible to see the scroll bar due to the background being same color as the scroll bar. By scroll bar I am referring to the scroll bar in firefox web browser for example that you'd use to scroll up and down. I am currently using my mouse's wheel button because the scroll bar does not look visible. Why are colors being applied this way? Why isn't there a distinction between the foreground and the background of the scroll bars?
