I am using cinnamon 2.2.16-1, awesome 3.5.5-1 and awesome-cinnamon from the Arch Linux AUR . The awesome-cinnamon package basically just creates the .desktop and .session files to load cinnamon with awesome wm as the window manager. This is almost perfect for me, but I would like to experiment with using the cinnamon panel in addition to or instead of the awesome wibox, because the cinnamon panel has attractive icons for the audio, wifi and power controls. I can't seem to find any way to start the cinnamon panel. I am left thinking that the cinnamon panel must be part of cinnamon's window manager. It seems from googling that there used to be a program gnome-panel and cinnamon-panel, but these don't seem to exist anymore. Does anyone know of a way to get this working? cat /usr/share/xsessions/awesome-cinnamon.desktop: [Desktop Entry] Name=Awesome Cinnamon Comment=Dynamic window manager TryExec=/usr/bin/cinnamon Exec=cinnamon-session-cinnamon --session=awesome Type=XSession cat /usr/share/cinnamon-session/sessions/awesome.session: [Cinnamon Session] Name=Awesome session RequiredComponents=cinnamon-settings-daemon;awesome; RequiredProviders=windowmanager;notifications; DefaultProvider-windowmanager=awesome DefaultProvider-notifications=notification-daemon $ cinnamon-TabTab: cinnamon-desktop-editor cinnamon-screensaver-lock-dialog cinnamon-extension-tool cinnamon-session cinnamon-json-makepot cinnamon-session-cinnamon cinnamon-launcher cinnamon-session-cinnamon2d cinnamon-looking-glass cinnamon-session-properties cinnamon-menu-editor cinnamon-session-quit cinnamon-screensaver cinnamon-settings cinnamon-screensaver-command cinnamon-settings-users

I am running kali linux, which has gnome. I just updated with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and that completed without incident, only a little while after did I realise that my bottom taskbar was missing(well technically just blank(black)). The one where running programs are displayed as well as the 4 buttons that allow switching between workspaces. I have searched around for the last hour, and tried a few things, such as gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel and a couple of variations thereof. Nothing has worked so far. I also tried: apt-get build-dep gnome-panel which installed a ton of stuff to my surprise... but still, no fix. If I type gnome-panel into the terminal I get the message: Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running. So clearly, it's not gone(anyway the top bar with menus and shutdown options etc. is still there), it's just the bottom bar... I also noticed that while I say it's missing, it's technically still there, albeit just a black unresponsive bar across the bottom of the screen. So I guess my real question is, why is it not showing anything? And can anybody please help me out?

Something has gone wrong."* See [superuser](https://superuser.com/questions/585635/fedora-18-in-oracle-virtualbox-on-windows-vista) for a screenshot. (Fail whale is providing this dialog.) Is there a way to stop gnome from doing that? Since the other programs are still running and working fine... In my case its clearly a timeout, since a scientific analysis eats up all memory and after its done Gnome has a hard time to recover. (I experienced also these crashes, when I was using some (combination of) extensions which are buggy. In that case the probably only or best solution is to not use those extensions... also considering the posts I've read about this.)

I'm having an issue with Thunderbird. I created a shortcut in the app launcher but when I start Thunderbird from there it doesn't download any email and the folders are empty. It works fine when launching from the terminal. I think the problem is from where the command is executed. Thunderbird is under ~/Applications/Thunderbird and I usually cd up to its location then run thunderbird. The other day by mistake I run it from home instead of going in the folder first (i.e. ./Applications/Thunderbird/thunderbird) and got the same issue of the launcher: application unable to download any emails and empty folders. Is there a way to set up the shortcut in the app launcher to execute thunderbird as if I were in its folder?

I have another strange issue with the GNOME Panel. Images (that I am using as backgrounds) instead of scaling vertically, are actually repeating vertically, leaving me with a really weird effect: Horizontal Line example 1 Horizontal Line example 2 Notice the **horizontal** line straight through the middle of the panel, this is the edge at which the pattern repeats. I'm using SVG images for the background, so scaling shouldn't be an issue. Is there a way to specify "scale" and not "repeat" for vertical layout? This whole thing is brought on by having a panel size not in keeping with the defaults, and I need the extra panel size because of the icon set I'm using.

I've been messing around with my system too much and messed something up. I'm new to Ubuntu, but have been using linux on servers for a few years. I'm not sure of the correct terminology so I'm including screen shots to explain what is going on. First, system specs: > Ubuntu 10.4 LTS x64 Lucid Core i7-970 Nvidia GTX 480 Dual Screen with Twinview Nvidia proprietary dev driver 260.24 (64-bit) Now what I screwed up: First major customization was ppa:goehle/goehle-ppa customizations for keeping evolution open after closing the main window. That worked fine until I started messing with getting hibernate working. I never got hibernate working even after installing linux-generic-tuxonice; it gave a warning about usb09 not stopping. The only things that I have in USB are a keyboard and mouse. Then I started getting the error: The panel encountered a problem while loading Trying to fix this, I reinstalled the Evolution customizations. The error persists and now the panel is messed up as well. I'm not getting the application icons, the menu with the chat status, or the shutdown/restart/lock screen menu. This is what it should look like: Expected panel But this is what I'm getting now: Actual panel How do I get my icons back? --- **EDIT:** I found how to get my application icons back. 1. Right-click on panel 2. Add to Panel ... 3. Notification Area. I still have not figured out what the chat bubble menu and power menu are called.

So far, I can assign a shortcut for a script like this: #!/bin/bash #switch between two layouts (English and Greek in this case) current_layouts=$(gsettings get org.gnome.libgnomekbd.keyboard layouts) if [ "$current_layouts" = "us" ]; then gsettings set org.gnome.libgnomekbd.keyboard layouts "['gr']" else gsettings set org.gnome.libgnomekbd.keyboard layouts "['us']" fi exec /path/to/another/script But using this method, I can use only that shortcut to switch between layouts and the keyboard indicator will disappear from the status menu, what is unpleasantly.

The problem is that when applications are fullscreen, neither bar is ever visible, even when pressing Control + Alt + Tab (like I did with GNOME 2), therefore I hope that by making them autohide, this problem will go away. I am using GNOME 3.14.1. Thank you.

For some reason my top and bottom panels have disappeared. I can't right-click and add a new panel either. I tried executing gnome-panel from the terminal, rebooting, but no luck. Any idea how to recover these panels?

Now I've got CentOS7/kde-plasma desktop and miss the bottom panel, mostly because switching foreground application with Alt-Tab is much less convenient than by just clicking on the one you want. How can I customize kde-plasma to have the gnome-style bottom panel?

I run Arch Linux with Gnome3. I need to escape from the "routine" and change to Gnome for some weeks or even months. When I open it, I can't see the system menu, which is supposed to be right of "places", and cannot right click my desktop. Is my Gnome corrupted?

__How can I list which applets are loaded on my gnome-panel?__ What gnome-panel do I have? I use the Ubuntu “gnome-panel” package and I’m not entirely sure what that means (version 3.4.1; ldd shows it depends on gtk3). So far I’ve found that gconf-editor shows me some entries under /apps/panel3-applets E.g. object_0_3. It seems that those have something to do with the applets running and their configuration, but a) I have only five entries there (not enough) and b) they don’t reveal which files/packages those entries originate from. With gsettings list-recursively I found an interesting entry: org.gnome.gnome-panel.layout object-id-list ['menu-bar', 'clock', 'notification-area', 'user-menu', 'object-0-0', 'object-0-1', 'object-0-2', 'object-0-3', 'object-0-4', 'object-0-5'] It lists the objects I found in gconf-editor and some more. But here I don’t even see configuration entries or anything better. From an applet I added myself I can say that the applet-chooser seems to be based on files found in /usr/share/gnome-panel/4.0/applets/, which contain a line telling the shared library to load by the panel (I guess). – __But after adding, where does the gnome-panel store which applets to load the next time??__

I had rebooted my laptop running Debian while it was in a perfectly fine running state. After the reboot, I log in again, and the top GNOME panel is completely blank. I only have one panel as I use Cairo Dock in the place of the bottom panel. When I look at dconf, the applets are still there, but the panel doesn't show it. Now, I can make a second panel, I can delete the top one and recreate it. If I do that, I can re-add my applets just fine, but the User Menu and the Custom Menu Labels applets cause it to freeze up to where the existing applets still show and work fine, but applets that are added afterwards do not show nor do they function. Even after a reboot, the applets that were already there just disappear and it's blank and still frozen. I believe it may have been a package I installed on the same day and have pasted a link to my apt and dpkg logs. I looked everywhere online and could not find someone with a similar issue. Any help at all will be much appreciated. Also, it's specific to this user. Other users work fine. If I delete the dconf 'user' file and reboot, there are no problems at all. But if I reboot again, then its back to the same issue. I'm utterly lost as to what to do.
