It seems that this is possible if you press Shift Tab twice, followed by Tab and then Space. (Essentially, it brings the focus to the "Switch User" button, and then pressing Space selects it. I am wondering if there is some less cumbersome keyboard shortcut to do the same thing? --- Alternatively, is there a keyboard shortcut to Fast User Switch when already logged in? (I have searched for this and only found older articles, suggesting the use of 3rd party software).

Currently, it seems to default alphabetically, so 'Adam' would be default rather than 'Eve.', but I prefer the 'Eve' as the default user. Currently, you have to press Escape, cancelling out of 'Adam' (for example), click focus on 'Eve' and then enter password. I would have hoped MacOS would offer an elegant solution, but I have not yet found it. I hope to power on or reboot, then the login screen defaults to 'Eve,' and all I need to do is enter the password rather than select an account that isn’t Alphabetically sorted first in the list. Is there a method for specifying the default user on the MacOS login screen?

Is there a way, via the command line, to check if the current user has the desktop? That is, if I run a shell script in a window, I want to be able to tell (in the script) if the user has switched to another account via Fast User Switching. The shell script is still running in that command window, but since the user has switched to another account, the Desktop doesn't show that command window. I share my Mac with my wife, and we each have our own accounts. When she sits down at the computer, she switches to her account. I want to write a Python program that runs 24/7 on my account. I want that program to know when my wife is at the computer and has switched to her account. I hope I'm explaining this clearly. I searched on Google for 20 minutes before giving up, as none of the search results were even close to what I was trying to find. I don't even know how to phrase the question properly.

I'm trying to set up a new iPad 9 to be used by me, my wife, and our kid, all under their own user accounts at the iOS level. I know it's not straightforward to do this, but I'm trying to do it using Shared iPad . I'm somewhat familiar with the concept of MDM, but most of this is new and confusing to me. I signed up for ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus, installed an MDM profile on the iPad, screenshot of MDM profile installed on iPad and followed the first part of ManageEngine's documentation on Apple Enrollment using Apple Configurator , even though I'm not sure how much of it applies to what I'm trying to do. When I got to the "prepare devices" step, I saw that the "Enable shared iPad" checkbox was disabled, and I'm not sure why, so I stopped there. Apple Configurator - prepare devices screenshot What is the simplest path to enabling multiple user accounts on this iPad? I don't have Apple School Manager, Business Manager, or Business Essentials. Most of the documentation I'm finding is for school or business settings. Mac OS 14.3, Apple Configurator 2.17 iPad 9, iPadOS 17.1

How to make OpenVPN Connect work in a multi-user macos?
How to make OpenVPN Connect work in a multi-user setup in macos 14? If it launches after a user logs in and OpenVPN Connect launches there, then after the user logs out and another one logs in, the second user cannot use OpenVPN Connect because it doesn't even start. Only restart helps.

Am wondering if there's a quicker way. - Like a quick-action callable from the TouchBar; that would benefit also from the close fingerprint sensor over there. - Or maybe simply using a shortcut, that I didn't find yet in the System Preferences. Any ideas or insights?

Previous to this update, I could have as many concurrent logins as I wanted, switching easily between them using the menu available at the top-right of my screen. I could simply click the user I wanted to log-in as and it would display the login screen for that user with a password prompt. After entering the password, it would quickly switch to that account without affecting the former account, leaving everything open and as-is. Nothing would be lost or closed out in any of the logged-in accounts between the switching. Since this update, however, I am only able to log in as one user. When I click on a user from the menu, the login screen with password prompt is displayed as usual, but once I enter the password, something goes wrong and one of two things happen: 1) I am logged out and the main login screen is displayed with all of the accounts, at which point I then have to select the account I want to switch to again, and enter the password again, before being logged-in to that account. 2) The "spinner" animation that is shown in place of the password prompt gets stuck, and I have to power off my iMac and then turn it back on. Obviously, power cycling results in total loss, but in both cases, I end up losing work. Even in the first case, it's essentially the same as logging out of the first user. All of my windows are closed, all my browser tabs are gone, and any unsaved work is lost. No fast user switching means loss of efficiency and continuity, and it is crippling to my work day. My productivity and performance are seriously suffering as a result. Where do I start? What can I do? Please help!

So here is a hypothetic scenario: I'm at work presenting something to a colleague and we are both looking at my screen, when suddenly I have to access a service that requires a password. I use 1Password as my password manager, so I hit the key to autofill the password and when 1Password prompts me I will use Touch ID to identify myself. But here is the deal - things went a little fast and I did not notice that 1Password was expecting my to type a password and not use Touch ID and when I pressed the Touch ID button Mac OS would instantly switch to my "private" user and resume my "movie watching session" from last night, providing a greatly amusing experience to my colleague and less so for me. How do I disable this stupid feature without actually disabling the ability to sign in with Touch ID? I'm perfectly happy with doing a few mouseclicks when switching user, but I fill in passwords many, many times a day and I'm not interested in being switched to my secondary user by mistake. I've checked the system preferences panes for Touch ID and users and found nothing.

Log out from user switching menu
Can I move or copy the "Log Out" item from the Apple Menu to the fast user switching menu at the right side of the menu bar? It seems a much more appropriate place for it. I'm running El Captain 10.11.6 (15G21013).

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite with 4GB of RAM and 200+ GB of disk space. After switching users, the user who has just logged in is slow. Waiting several minutes or dropping to Terminal and running sudo killall -u $other_user -KILL seems to immediately show an improvement in performance. The only consistent symptom I can find is that the other user has a number of processes, nearly all Chrome, using CPU cycles. I have not tracked this observation consistently enough to say if it is always true or not. When OS X switches users does it treat the other user as if the system were asleep or does it allow that users processes to run? Killing another users running processes is poor manners. Is there a better way to solve this problem? What can I examine to determine why the system is slow after switching users?

I keep getting logged out when I switch users
I'm running macOS 12.12.3 (Sierra). I keep getting logged out when I try to switch users, both doing fast user switching and going back to the login menu and then logging in. It's incredibly frustrating. What could be a fix? The only "weird" thing that I have running is QuickRes. Any idea?

On my network when a user is auto-logged-out, this feature seems to just activate fast-user-switching, *Is that what it is supposed to do?* I am talking about the setting, as seen below in El Capitain, from System Preferences, and you can also access this setting with profiles/mdm for example from the Profile Manager (formerly Workgroup Manager). I have this disabled in both the local system and the profiles assigned to both the devices and user-groups. I've also seen the same proposed issue in Yosemite. This is annoying because when users don't logout, the system seems to go back to the login screen without clearing the RAM, possibly also locking files that are in use, etc.; creating a truly slow, buggy machine. <img src=" class="img-fluid rounded" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto; margin: 10px 0;" loading="lazy">

Disable screen blur on fast user switching in Yosemite
Anyone aware of a way to customize the appearance of the screen during fast user switching? I'd like to disable the background blur to make it look more like it did in Mavericks.

I am on Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks). I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running in clamshell mode with an external 27 inch Apple monitor attached to it. I am logged in with two users, A and B. When I do a fast user switch from user A to user B, most windows that were open for user B when I last worked with that user are resized and some windows even change their position. Maximized windows are affected the most, typically they become less in height while staying the same in width. It feels as if initiating the user switch had temporarily changed the screen size or resolution, causing windows to change their size/position to adjust for the smaller screen size. Is this a known problem of Mac OS X in general, or of running a MacBook in clamshell mode? Has anyone experienced this as well and/or knows how to fix it? I can't remember when exactly I have noticed this problem for the first time. I am certain that it didn't exist with older versions of Mac OS X (i.e. 10.8 and older), although I must say that when I was last using Mac OS X 10.8 I also had a different MacBook and a different monitor. The general work environment MacBook/clamshell mode/external monitor has been the same for me for years.
