I used cmd + tab often. But when I have multiple displays, it brings up the application switcher on all displays. How do I limit it to just the the focused display?

It used to be the case that command-h ('hide application') would also reorder applications, and put the hidden one at the back of the list (i.e. all the way to the right in the alt-tab list). In recent macOS versions, command-h still hides but **it no longer reorders**. It preserves the relative position of the app. I find this annoying since command-tabbing brings me immediately back to the app I just hid. **Is anyone aware of a defaults that sends an application to the back when hiding it? i.e. bring back the old macOS behavior.** --- Related, and quite old: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/19185/can-i-get-back-snow-leopard-like-application-hiding-cmd-h-in-lion --- Edit: correct alt-tab -> command-tab

Since the order of the icons is not what I expect, I seem to switch to the wrong app instance more often than not. How do I either: 1. Change the app name? 1. Change the app icon? 1. Limit the apps to only those in the current Space?

How to show only last used window of an app with Cmd+Tab?

After going quite deep into the rabbit hole of app/window switchers from Hammerspoon, "Alt-Tab" and other third-party apps, I realized there is a single setting that would make the process good enough: Being able to switch apps with Cmd+Tab but bringing only the last used window of selected new app to the front. Does such a setting exist? My use case is the following: Let's say I have a browser and a text editor side by side, with another fullscreen browser window in the background. I would like to use Cmd+Tab to switch between the two windows I am using side by side. Currently, both browser windows woud come to the front with Cmd-Tab, hiding the text editor. I am aware that I can make "Alt-Tab" app use the Cmd+Tab keyboard shortcut to cycle through all open app windows. However, I would like to avoid the clutter and only see each app once in the app switcher, just like in the stock MacOS app switcher. I would also like to avoid introducing another keyboard shortcut for window switching if possible. There seem to have been related posts here on StackExchange but as far as I can tell mostly more than a decade ago. I am hopeful that Apple has improved its app/window switching in the meantime 🙈

I recently switched to macOS Mojave Dark Mode, and I like many aspects of it. But there's one thing that really gives me trouble, i.e., using the App Switcher in front of a window that is mainly dark/black. When I use the keyboard shortcut, Command + Tab to invoke the App Switcher, the switcher *highlights* the *currently selected* app using a black frame. Black frames do not work too well when they are used transparently above black background. I did then turned to the Accessibility settings to *Reduce transparency* but that actually made things worse. Is there a way to somehow fix this problem? (I installed HyperSwitch as a workaround. The UI part works much better there for me, but the actual logic of app switching is "wrong" when using multiple screens, so that renders it a no go for me) Two screenshots are shown below. The first one shows the App Switcher with the first app (iTerm) selected. iterm-selected In the second one, now the selection is on Google Chrome (which one can somehow guess from the fact, that the app name is highlighted below the icon). chrome-selected

I run all of my applications in full screen mode on a laptop without an external monitor. I almost exclusively use Alfred to swap between applications, since I'm frequently moving between more than just two of them. Alfred, for context, uses the open command to perform its application switching. Anyway, there are several applications where, when I switch *to* them (doesn't matter where I'm coming from), the desktop switches to Space 1 (which is the empty space containing only Finder) and the main application actually switches to Finder. I can hit Cmd-Tab once to get to the intended application (note that this means the target application moved in the list order, since tabbing once would otherwise result in returning to where I came from), but obviously that's another step that is undesirable. To make matters worse, it is somewhat nondeterministic (I'd say it happens around 60-70% of the time), so I never really know if I'm going to "make it" when I try to switch apps. A non-exhaustive list of applications where I've seen this happen (again, swapping *to*, not from): - Sublime Text 3 - TweetBot - Calendar (like, the first-party Apple Calendar) - Mail (*very* rarely) - Slack I've never (not even once) seen this glitch happen with the following applications: - Safari - Terminal - 1Password Put another way, the symptoms here are *similar* to what happens if you disable the "When switching to an application, switch to a Space…" option in the Mission Control preferences, but not quite the same. Toggling that setting has an effect, but doesn't fix the problem. With the setting off, what happens is the focused application will switch reliably to my target app (I don't get "intercepted" by Finder), but the space doesn't switch. Which is to be expected, since that is the intended behavior of the setting. To make matters even more confusing… I enabled the hidden "Quit the Finder" menu option and shut down Finder. So that left me in a situation where *nothing* was active on Space 1 and all of the applications were in fullscreen. I then tried to switch to one of the problematic apps. The results were that I was switched to Space 1, but the focused application was my target (presumably since Finder wasn't available to intercept). It's almost like what's happening is the window manager is sometimes failing to switch me to the space which contains my target application (e.g. Slack) and instead switches me to Space 1, at which point the default "on switching into a space" behavior takes over and focuses the most-recently used application on that space. And this behavior is independent of what applications are open on Space 1, but *is* somehow dependent on the application I'm swapping to. I've been using Alfred (and QuickSilver before it) to switch applications basically since Mac OS X 10.2, and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this. I've also seen this across two completely distinct laptops with entirely separate user accounts, settings and application setups (modulo some overlap, such as Alfred, Dropbox, etc). I'm basically out of crazy ideas to even debug the issue. Help? (btw, I actually never use Finder, so I would legitimately accept a solution which kills Finder and removes Space 1 altogether, but I doubt that is possible) --- **Update** The semantics of this problem appear to have changed in 10.12.2. Specifically, now the application deterministically gets focus, but the space still often gets "stuck" on space 1. So it's now almost identical to having the "When switching to an application" setting deactivated. Even more interestingly, I've now seen it *occasionally* with Cmd-Tab, but only when the system is under high load.

When Mission Control preferences When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for that application is enabled, it is not possible to switch to an empty space if a Finder window is open. I have three spaces that I use for different tasks. If I open a Finder window in one space, I can no longer switch to the other spaces to launch other programs, because there are not yet any open windows. If I try from any app besides the Finder, it just dumps me in the Space with the Finder window. *Note: in the Dock options for the Finder, I have "Assign to: None" because I want my Finder windows associated with Spaces.*

I usually have 2 Firefox windows on both displays (1 on my Mac and 1 on my external monitor) and 2 programming IDEs on both displays. My goal is to be able to have a programming IDE open on an external monitor and Firefox open on my Mac at the same time. The problem is that Mac os changes the active application (with CMD+TAB or mouse) on both displays. This problem occurs only when the application is present on both screens. If I have IDE on an external monitor and Firefox on Mac then it works ok. But when I have 2xIDE and 2xFirefox on both displays then as mentioned above MacOS will switch on both of them. As a workaround I only came up with an idea to minimise one of the windows, then the app switcher will not switch to it.

I have a question regarding tab switching on MacOS. Basically, I have a main monitor connected to my MacBook, which I use for work and my MacBook screen is used primarily for playing media in a browser. The problem I'm having is whenever I switch Apps, say Terminal -> Chrome, MacOS arbitrarily picks one Chrome window (which more often than not is the one playing media on my laptop screen), and switches to that, making me accidentally refresh my media webpage. I'm basically never touching the media browser window, but even then doing the switch from focus on main screen browser window -> CMD + TAB to terminal on main screen -> CMD + TAB back to chrome, seems to focus on the laptop screen, even though that one was never really focused before. Hope the explanation makes sense and someone can help!

I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra. I also have two Dell UltraSharp Infinity Edge monitors connected to it via two Thunderbolt Mini DisplayPort outputs. In the System Preferences, I've arranged my two displays such that the menu bar is located in the monitor immediately in front of me. The second monitor sits to my left. The problem I'm having is that when I hit Command + Tab to activate the Application Switcher, the switcher always appears in the monitor on my left instead of the monitor in front of me. I would think that the switcher would appear on the monitor whose display has the Menu bar. Is there some way to configure my settings so that the switcher will always appear in the monitor in front of me, that is, the monitor that holds the Menu bar?
