However, in iOS 14 there is a new privacy feature which changes the MAC address every day so it is randomized.
Any ideas how to ensure parental controls on WiFi is setup to handle this?
Otherwise I have to update the WiFi parental controls frequently which is a non starter.

How can I access the WiFi router I am currently connected to via an unchanging hostname?
For command-line stuff like ping, or http in the browser to load the router's settings page.
The hostname should always point at whatever the current router's IP address is, as can be found manually by going to System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > TCP/IP
I would like

http://myrouter
in Safari to do the same thing as visiting http://192.168.0.1
in this case. Maybe sometimes I will be connected to another wifi network where the router's IP is different, in that case I still want to be able to simply visit http://myrouter
but this time get redirected to/shown http://192.168.1.2
for example.
Does this kind of hostname already exist? If not, how can I set that up?

I am trying to make a internet configuration to improve my wifi in the whole house, but I don't want to switch between different wifi names, I have a Airport Time Capsule Third Generation, Google wifi Router and a modem, my house is two stories and my basement, where I need internet signal too.
My Problem; I have my modem and router in the same room, and I was able to connect an ethernet cable to my Time Capsule, so far so good, but I can make the Time Capsule extend my wifi connection. I read that doing a roaming configuration would be perfect in this case. However, I don't have the whole explanation to do that.
When I connect the Google router and the Time Capsule, my understanding is I have to put in a bridge mode, but if I only do that and switch the wireless setting in the Time Capsule off, then the Network option goes off (bridge mode); too, but at that point the Time Capsule is not doing any internet wifi capabilities, to turn that option I have to go back to the wireless setting and chose the network Mode to Extend a wireless network and leave the name and password as they are, unfortunately if I do that my Time Capsule goes flashing amber, the google wifi goes amber too and the internet goes amber too.
Could you help me to solve this?

My Mac Mini at home is behind a router. I need to access it occasionally from work using a Windows laptop. I use the following two links to set up the connection.
[YouTube: How to Access Your Mac over Internet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBjRAK0rFvk) and
[Setting up Remote Access (Mac)](https://www.dynu.com/Resources/Tutorials/DynamicDNS/RemoteDesktopMac) .
I enabled Screen sharing instead of Remote Management mentioned in the second link. Then I tested it at home on the LAN.
First, I entered UltraVNC on my Windows laptop as the internal IP address for Mac Mini, I can access Mac Mini using UltraVNC viewer without a problem.
Then I set up a port forward for port 5900 in my router and checked it with [Dynu: Port Check](https://www.dynu.com/networktools/portcheck) . The port check result is **success**. According to my understanding, that means an outside computer should be able to use the router IP address and port 5900 to send access requests to Mac Mini behind the router. However, when I enter in the software UltraVNC Viewer (still at home) either the router IP address or the subdomain created at Dynu, UltraVNC viewer reports "Failed to connect to server".
Should I try outside the home? What else do I miss here?

My goal is to cast third-party apps like YouTube or Netflix to my Apple TV 4K. **I do not want to Airplay my screen** but rather control the Third-Party-App via my iPhone. Usually the button looks like this:
## Problem ##
If I click on the cast-icon, nothing happens an my Apple-TV is not found. When using Netlfix it tells me, there are no devices found:
I tried this with multiple iPhones without any luck.
We had a Samsung TV a couple of months ago where everything worked just fine.
## What I already did or tried ##
- update my iPhone to newest iOS (17.0.3)
- reset my network-settings on my iPhone
- update my Apple-TV to the newest tvOS
- update the third-party apps to the newest version
- call the Apple Support
I did everything without any success.

The iPhone is two times in the graphic because either way it won't work. FRITZ!box is a router very commonly used in Germany. They are also all updated to the newest FRITZ!OS (the operating system of the FRITZ!boxes). I double-checked, that I am not using a guest-LAN or guest-WLAN. I can also ping the Apple TV from my MacBook seamlessly. The Apple TV can play everything from YouTube or Netflix and has no problems connecting to the internet. AirPlay does also work, but as mentioned is it not my goal to use AirPlay
## What I (think to) know ##
On the Netflix support page is a trouble-shoot guide for using the cast-function:
> Make sure your Wi-Fi router or modem is set up to allow multicast. For the steps to set up multicast, check the manual that came with your router or contact the manufacturer.
To my understanding, multicast is enabled on my FRITZ!boxes so i searched the web and came across IGMP snooping
. This is used for multicasting and could allegedly harm in some cases the multicast stream. My understanding is, that IGMP snooping
helps the multicasting. I also found out that the Bonjour packages from the Apple TV (Are sent by the Apple TV from my understanding to establish the connection) have a TTL (Time-To-Live) of 1, thus they cannot be routed. To my understanding the mesh-repeaters nor the switches act like a router and don't delete the package.
Is there anything in my setup that prevents the usage of those casting features?
Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!
### Update ###
With this configuration:
FRITZ!box 7590 Mesh Master
├─ Apple TV (wireless)
├─ iPhone (wireless)
I got YouTube to work but Netflix still didn't work. Apparently, the 6591 Cable does route the packages or something similar and the package dies. If I got the time, I will try to wireshark into the packages from and to the Apple TV.

For years I've used an Apple Airport Extreme router which recently began randomly dropping connections and exhibiting other odd issues. This coupled with slow wireless speeds (by modern standards) led me to buy a new router, a TP-LINK AC1750 (Archer A7).
So far it's awesome, but I've noticed a couple behaviours have changed.
Most significantly, "Wake for Ethernet network access" no longer works on my desktop. It's a Macpro running OSX 10.14.6. Previously, it would go to sleep, but if I made an attempt to connect via SSH it would wake up. I could also access it via finder as a network share and even when asleep it would show up on under "Locations" in the finder. Clicking on it would wake the computer. Now, once it's asleep, I need to go physically do something to the computer.
After reading up a bit on the subject, I've now configured DHCP as well as ARP binding so that the machine in question has a fixed LAN IP and I am now able to use commandline util
wakeonlan
to wake up this machine.
Is there a way to get the old behaviour back? How was the Airport Extreme doing this? I didn't need wakeonlan
previously - I only had to ssh
to the machine and it would wake up. Was the old router doing something special here?

I have a non-retina mid-2012 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and this issue has been plaguing me for a while.
During regular use of the laptop, while connected to my home WiFi network (to which no more than three other devices are usually connected), I keep experiencing sudden and complete drops in connectivity. It happens more than once every hour, usually while I'm browsing the Internet on Chrome and I'll see my loading tabs hang there with no response. The OS does not seem to notice this drop in connectivity, and keeps showing the WiFi icon as connected. To get the connection back I either have to wait till it returns (usually after a minute) or disconnect and reconnect the WiFi.
I think the issue is with the Macbook itself or between the Macbook and the router, because during these drops I won't even be able to connect to the router itself (by opening its web interface), and the Macbook seems to completely ignore the lack of connectivity.
The other laptop in the house (running Windows) does not experience these connectivity drops.
I have tried resetting the router, making the Macbook forget about it and then re-configuring the connection and changing WiFi modes but none of these things worked.
Here are a few more details:
Router
------
**Model**: Linksys WAG120N;
**Firmware version**: V1.00.16 (most up to date);
**WiFi mode**: Mixed (running in G-only or N-only mode still causes issues);
Macbook
-------
15" Macbook Pro from mid-2012 (non-retina);
**Processor**: Intel Core i7 2.6GHz;
**Software**: OS X 10.8.2;

My internet connection on a new Mac (Apple M1 Pro, macOS Ventura) has interruptions every so often. Some important information:
1. These interruptions do not happen with other devices that make use of the same internet connection, also WiFi.
2. These interruptions do not "lose" the Wifi connection (meaning, the computer seems to remain connected with the upper right symbol of three arcs in the OS).
I cannot understand what causes interruptions specifically on this computer, and rather than looking immediately for a solution, I would like to at least be able to diagonse the problem. My thoughts are that maybe:
1. The KVM switch sits too close to the laptop and causes some distruptions (I read somewhere this *could* be a problem). Is it indeed at all right? I also tried to put it away by elevating it from the laptop by about 12", and it still doesn't help).
2. There is some bad routing happening and a clash with another machine where my laptop "loses" every so often, but I don't know (a) why that would be the case - I never configured anything in the router; (b) how to check for that?
3. Some hardware problem with WiFi chip in the laptop itself, but again, I don't know how to diagnose that.
Are there any suggestions how to proceed with something like that? I did try to search for solutions and hints online, but they are all very very generic (turn off the router, turn it back on, reboot your laptop, etc. -- all done and tried).

I would like to use a dynamic DNS service for "finding" my Mac, but the **router does not support** any dynamic DNS functionality.
What (lightweight) option is there to **update** the DNS service with current IP info **anyway**? I remember installing a clunky menu-bar app several years ago, and I would prefer something configurable from the terminal.
*NB: I feel it could be a problem when the MacBook is moved to a different network (friends, company) temporarily and attempts to connect to macbookaddress.dynamicdnz.tld suddenly hit their network. Correct?*

Currently, I have a AirPort Extreme as WiFi router to which all my devices connect. It is configured in bridge mode and is connected to my ISPs router via WAN port which works just fine.
My goal is to use the ISP router as the primary router to which all devices connect and to use the AirPort just for its Time Capsule capability. The problem is that if I'm connected to my ISPs router, I don't have access to my AirPort Extreme which is in Bridge Mode. There is a ping timeout and I also cannot connect to its network share.
How can I configure the AirPort to allow access from outside?

I have a router running the FreshTomato firmware. If I connect to the web UI in any of the following ways, it is very laggy (sometimes 10+ seconds for a simple page navigation):
- 5k iMac connected via a gigabit ethernet switch
- the same 5k iMac connected directly over ethernet
- M1 Air wirelessly
- iPad Pro
If I dust off an old 12" G4 Powerbook and repeat the first three connections, it is in another league. Super-snappy, every time.
In all cases, connections *through* the router to other web interfaces seem fine. It's just modern Safari and FreshTomato that don't agree. Chrome seems a *little* better, but still not a match for vintage OSX 10.4.
I don't have any content blockers or extensions installed. What is likely to be the cause?
# Update
The interface is really quite simple, which made me think it unlikely that this really was a browser problem. Connecting via Proxyman reported a high rate of errors (NIOCore.ChannelError). I was reluctantly coming to the conclusion that this was going to descend into Wireshark territory (maybe it still will!), but I thought I'd try something else first...
If I route traffic via an intermediate machine (
ssh -L 8080:tomato:80 pi
and point Safari at 127.0.0.1:8080
), suddenly I get the same snappy experience my Powerbook G4 enjoys. My low-level networking isn't strong enough to spot the true cause / solution though.
Achieving a similar result via an nginx instance has the same positive result:
location / {
proxy_pass http://tomato/ ;
}
I don't consider needing a 3rd device in order to manage a router as a final solution.

Last night Apple auto-updated my iPhone 8 Plus and installed iOS 15.5. I've gone through many such updates for years with no problems. Beginning today with the first use of my iPhone, the WiFi connection dropped repeatedly. I went to Settings and turned WiFi off and then back on and reestablished a connection, but it lasted only a short time -- maybe 15 seconds -- and then dropped again.
I've tested all other devices served by the router and my updated iPhone is the only one with this problem.
Router is ASUS RTN66R Double 450 Mbps N Router. Serving 6 devices.

I just connected my iPhone to a brand new router and saw that 2 new MAC addresses appeared in connected devices.
By disabling the "Private address" feature I could verify that both MAC addresses belong to my iPhone.
I understand that this is a privacy feature, but what's the point if my hardware address shows up anyway?
This was my first time connecting to this network and the private address feature is enabled by default.
I have tested this on 2 routers, same thing with this iPhone. However, when using an Android device with the private address feature, only the spoofed MAC appears in my devices list.
Wonder if this just happens to me or also to others. And, more important: How can I prevent this from happening?

So, Time Capsule and Time Machine together used to be the perfect backup solution for my household's Macs. Then they stopped working.
After I got a new laptop with Catalina, I would regularly get an error message saying that the backup needed to be deleted and was starting over. Sort of defeats the purpose of a backup when it gets regularly deleted. Then my wife started getting the same error on her computer... and then it got even worse on mine, where it just wouldn't back up at all.
Since my wife is also getting problems on her computer, it doesn't seem like the issue is with my setup. I started looking for alternative backup solutions. I tried Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper, and they both took an interminably long time... and then failed anyway.
I would imagine that a big part of the problem, if not the whole problem, is just that Apple isn't supporting Time Capsule anymore. But it *is* supporting Time Machine, I think. So it _looks_ like [what I need is a good third-party wireless router](https://www.cultofmac.com/545927/use-time-machine-without-airport-time-capsule/) that will support Time Machine. But before I blow hundreds of dollars, I wanted to check in with people who know what they're doing. If I buy a good third-party Time Capsule equivalent, will that allow me to go back to the old way of using Time Machine? And are there particular things that I should look for in the hardware to make that happen?

I am assisting a friend who has lost a phone and is considering getting an older phone (iPhone 7) as replacement, as it is well regarded in the digital photography profession.
The concern is that the router at their place, latest Comcast product, may produce issues with a legacy phone, such as the iPhone 7.
Are there any known issues with a latest model Comcast router and older Apple iPhones? How old of a phone model could they go? iPhone 6 or 5, perhaps?
They are concerned that the router may combine both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals that the phone may have difficult connecting because it can't distinguish between both signal types.

New 2013 MacBook Air connects to routers everywhere but home, older MacBooks connect fine

We bought my mother a new 13" MacBook Air (so: purchased May 2014). From the start, it's had issues connecting to our LAN. Other computers, including my 2011 MacBook Pro, connect fine.
I've tried multiple times running the Wireless Diagnostics and connection wizards that come with the Air, which offer no help. The Air also can connect to the router via Ethernet and gets the Internet connection, but obviously we don't want to do that all the time.
My mother brought her Air to her work today and connected to that Wifi network without issue.
At home, our computers connected to the Internet run an IP address in the range of 173.195.x.x. Hers runs at 166.x.x.x whenever it doesn't connect properly, but if I renew the DHCP lease a couple times and keep switching settings randomly then I can connect the Air to the network until the Air sleeps. It's an unreliable method.
Specifically, the Air has this IP address but does not say this address is self-assigned. It also does not tell me that I 'won't be able to connect the Internet'.
My suspicion is currently with the router. It's about 3.5+ years old at this point, a Netgear WND3400 N600. I think it may just be that it's a wireless-n and the Air is wireless-ac, but the Air should be backwards-compatible.
I haven't updated the firmware on the router, I'm about to do so now.
Does anyone have any ideas for me to try out?
