My notebook, an older Apple MacBookAir 13" with Intel Core i7 an Intel HD Graphics 5000, used to work fine before the upgrade to Trixie (Debian GNU/Linux 13). Now, after the upgrade, all rendering is done using the CPU instead of the GPU. This is annoying and makes the machine feel slow. I would like to have accelerated hardware rendering back, but I don't know where to start troubleshooting this. All relevant packages seems to be installed. The GPU is detected. But llvmpipe is used for all rendering instead. System info:

There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf on my system. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ contains a file called 20-displaylink.conf:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel"
    Driver "intel"
EndSection
Plus, another file called 90-xpra-virtual.conf which was automatically created:
# Ignore all xpra virtual devices by default,
# these will be enabled explicitly when needed.
Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "xpra-virtual-device"
        MatchProduct "Xpra"
        Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection
A *systematic troubleshooting guide* would be most helpful/appreciated. Unfortunately, I could not find a suiable one online = one that is specific to this piece of hardware and one that does include a fix, not only diagnosis. P.S.: I have another older computer (an older MacMini) that also has an Intel chipset/GPU, also uses the i915 driver and suffers from the same type of problem (renderer: llvmpipe instead of GPU, even though GPU seems to be "recognzied"). So I am pretty sure that this is related to the upgrade to Trixie/Debian testing. Other than that, I have no idea as where to start troubleshooting this.

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13" Early 2015. I was successful in installing Linux Mint 18.1 Sarah and everything worked fine but the Macbook Pro started overheating. Idle CPU temperature was around 67-70 degrees Celsius. I tried running a simple python script which printed numbers from 0 to 1 million and saw the temperatures hovering at around 90 degrees Celsius which in my opinion is very hot for a simple program. I thought it has something to do with Linux Mint and tried installing Ubuntu 16.04 which is the base for Linux Mint and still had the same heat issues. I tried Fedora and RHEL, same heat issues. I have an Asus ROG gaming laptop which is running Windows and Linux Mint on dual boot and Linux Mint runs around 70 degrees even under heavy load. I installed macfanctld and it does nothing except run fast for like 10 seconds after boot and then nothing. My question is, why does Linux run so hot on Apple hardware which has an Intel i5 processor with lower TDP than the Intel i7 on the Asus which has higher TDP rating? I really would love to use Linux on the Macbook Pro without the heat issues. **[Edit]** This is my output of lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D': `00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09) Subsystem: Apple Inc. I have bought a new Mac Mini, and would like to use it as a Linux server. Now I'm trying to install CentOS on it. I downloaded CentOS-6.4-x86_64-netinstall.iso and booted the Mac Mini from a USB-stick. But during the installation process I get these errors: dmar: No ASTR found IOAPIC id 0 under DRHD base 0xfed9100 HPET id 0 under DRHD base 0xfed91000 Enabled IRQ remapping in x2apic mode Enabling x2apic Enabled x2apic Setting APIC routing to cluster x2apic Kernel panic - not syncing: No mapping iommu for ioapic 2 Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64 #1 Call Trace: ... Any suggestions what the problem is? Do I need a different binary to be able to run on an Mac? According to a tweet, CentOS 6.4 seem to work, at least on older, Mac Mini's: https://twitter.com/courtneycotton/statuses/312267424605036544 -------- **UPDATE**: the suggestion of adding noapic to the boot took me further in the installation process. Now I had to select an installation medium. The choice is CD/DVD, Hard drive, NFS directory or URL, and I have a *USB-stick*, so I choose *Hard drive*. Then I'm supposed to choose a partition that holds the installation image for CentOS, the choice is between /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 or /dev/sdb1. Here I have really no idea what name my *USB-stick* has. I have tried with them all, but if I choose e.g. /dev/sdb1 I later get the message: > The installation source given by device ['/dev/sdb1'] could not be found. Please check your parameters and try again. I put my iso file on the USB-stick by following the Ubuntu instructions . Any suggestion on how to go further in the installation process?

I have a MacBook Retina 12" (2017) machine that unfortunately has developed an error with the power system that shows up in Apple Diagnostics and result in the machine being severely throttled down under MacOS 12 which is the latest the machine can run. I have given up upon trying to get MacOS not throttle anyway. I have tried to install Ubuntu 25.04 which works well with an external USB keyboard and mouse, but the out of the box experience is not working well with the builtin trackpad and keyboard, and I could not locate any easy instructions to fix it. Some poking around indicated that the devices were present, but apparently not wired up correctly. Question is: Is there any version of Linux or a *BSD variant, that works well without any non-trivial post-install tinkering for this particular machine?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with a 1TB hard drive from a 2015 iMac. It has two 4GB RAM sticks; one originally came with this MacBook Pro, and the other is from an older HP laptop. There are no residual traces of macOS on the machine. This is approximately the fourth time I’ve installed Kali Linux, gradually fine-tuning everything each time. This time, however, I’m installing Kali in legacy mode to gain more control over the BIOS (ring -2). I only install OSes to load directly into root (ring 0), eliminating the home (ring 3) section of partitioning. As someone who enjoys pushing limits and designing unique setups, I want this machine to support dual-booting two separate OSes (only one running at a time), selectable at power-on. I want Kali Linux to be fully operational, but I also want to install DracOS with a custom Nix toolbox. I’ve never installed two OSes on one machine before and want to ensure partitioning is done correctly. I’m currently in the partition setup via Kali Linux graphical expert mode. Thank you for taking the time to read and review my questions and for any guidance you can provide.

On a MacBook, I tried to access one of the system apps, Maps.app which is normally a folder stored in /System/Applications on a separate volume (here mounted as /System/Volumes/Data). What I found odd is that ls, cd and stat all seem to pretend the folder isn't there - however, find happily finds it.
$ find /System/Volumes/Data -name 'Maps.app'

I'm aware that given this is happening on MacOS and that folder has special flags such as com.apple.rootless and restricted, but I'm curious about whether there's some mechanism in Unix that's used to produce this effect. Specifically, **what mechanism can be used to prevent a specific folder / tree from being visible and what does find do differently from ls** which allows it to bypass this?

Two days ago I did a fresh install of Debian 12 stable + Xfce on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro using LUKS for full-disk encryption. Performance around the OS has been incredibly poor. My CPU is hardly being taxed (50%), and the swap is not/hardly being used. I was using Xubuntu (without encryption) prior to installing Debian and have not installed any software on Debian that I wasn't already using without issue on Xubuntu. Xubuntu was using an earlier version of the kernel if it matters (5.15 iirc, versus 6.1 for Debian). To give you a sense for how bad things are, installing light packages with apt or dpkg takes probably two orders of magnitude more time than it should. Instead of "processing triggers" at the end of an install for a second or two, it's sometimes been taking me a couple of minutes. I just used apt to install htop (a whopping 152 kB) and it took ~15 seconds just to unpack. Programs like Matlab that would open in maybe 10-15 seconds on Xubuntu now take more like 5 minutes. Typically I can copy data to my external hard drive at 75-100 MB/s, but now I'm only getting 5-25 MB/s. The OS and programs are mostly usable but incredibly sluggish. I own a dual-core Celeron Chromebook from 2015 also running Debian 12 + Xfce with full-disk encryption via LUKS and it is *substantially* faster than my MacBook Pro despite the MacBook having a quad-core i7-4750HQ. So, something is clearly very wrong here. The MacBook has "flash storage", which I think is just an SSD. The Chromebook has a M.2 SSD. Download speeds are as fast as ever, so it's not an internet issue. I also confirmed my processor supports AES-NI as called out here . Any ideas for what might be going wrong or how I might troubleshoot this? It would be frustrating to reinstall without encryption only to figure out it was actually a driver or kernel issue, or something, especially since I'm already most of the way set up. So, I figured I'd ask the brain trust before I take any actions. Update: I just opened up a Gamecast on MLB.com and they disabled the real-time player positions with the following message: "This feature has been disabled based on your device's power mode." Looks like I'm using the "schedutil" governor. I doubt the choice of governor is enough to give symptoms like this, but I may fiddle around.

Further information shows that the archive type is STORED. Not deflate, or compressed. What am I missing.

I'm trying to install Debian on a MacBookAir ( as dual-boot or as a single, I don't care that much). Every time I select "EFI Boot", laptop goes into the black screen. After a while I hear it is processing something, but it is still black screen. Below are the specifications and steps that I did: MacBook Air8.1 Intel Core i5 In Recovery Mode, under Utilities > Startup Security Utility I allowed "External Boot: Allow booting from external or removable media". All secure boots are disabled. I tried following images (and I checked shasum, they are correct) debian-12.8.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso debian-12.8.0-amd64-netinst.iso 1/ Created a Bootable USB using balenaEtcher. 2/ Switched on MacBook and hold option to launch the boot menu. 3/ Selected "EFI Boot". 4/ And then the screen goes black. I tried to press "E", "ESC" or "Shift" immediately after selecting "EFI Boot" hoping to get to get GRUB bootloader menu, but none of it worked. What should I do to install debian? What am I doing wrong? Thank you a lot for the support and advice!

Here's what it *should* look like:
It should look like this
but for some reason, it looks like:
this for some reason
and it has to do with the fact that one of the fonts has the word "Emoji" in it, which causes the space between words to increase. I am on Arch Linux and I have tested this on Firefox and Chromium. Here is a screenshot: enter image description here here's a minimalist version that produces this font rendering issue:

This is too wide

I am running Arch on a 2013 Mac Pro (6,1). Since the built in HDMI port only supports HDMI 1.4, I would like to use an eGPU (RTX 2070 super) with a Sonnet Egfx Breakaway Box 650 (using this as a HTPC and would like HDMI 2.0). The Sonnet is a Thunderbolt-3 device, so I have a Genuine Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. I understand the bandwidth bottleneck with PCIe 3.0 x16 vs Thunderbolt 3/2. However, it seems that others have been able to get this to work - https://schoolofmotion.com/blog/2013-mac-pro-egpu . I have tried all different combinations of nvidia drivers (open, dkms, 470, recent, etc.) as well as several combinations of kernel paramenters. I believe the root cause is the error "cannot obtain PCI resources" (see below). I tried with an AMD Vega 56 GPU and also had the same issues.

**What We Tried:** I tried various combinations of NVIDIA drivers, including open-source, DKMS, 470xx, and the most recent drivers. Additionally, I experimented with multiple kernel parameters to troubleshoot the "cannot obtain PCI resources" error. I also attempted using an AMD Vega 56 GPU to see if it would yield different results. **What Was Expected:** I expected the eGPU (RTX 2070 Super) to be detected and function correctly, allowing for HDMI 2.0 output via the Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650. Specifically, I was looking to bypass the limitations of the built-in HDMI 1.4 port on the Mac Pro by using the Thunderbolt-to-eGPU setup. **What Actually Happened:** Despite the various drivers and kernel tweaks, the system consistently failed to obtain PCI resources for the eGPU, leading to errors and the GPU not being recognized or utilized as expected. This issue persisted even when using the AMD Vega 56 GPU, indicating a broader problem with the setup rather than a specific GPU issue.

This issue was previously posted on the Lubuntu subreddit, and the person who graciously spent time helping me figure it out told me to share it on here, because we ran out of ideas. I hope someone on here will have come across something like it before. Please check out [the original thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Lubuntu/comments/1bv8czx/startup_issues/) with all the stuff we tried out. What we ended up finding out is that the issue most likely stems from the GPU, but installing the additional drivers didn't fix anything. Another weird thing is that the GUI only rarely has issues beyond that. Here is a link to some logs showing what is going on: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hYhHxNGfXp/ Here is a description of the issue: I set up Lubuntu 22.04.4 (the latest LTS build back when I did it) on my 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro, and I have a weird issue that I am struggling to figure out on my own. The issue most likely doesn't stem from the quality of the download, as I spent a while figuring out whether my sha256sum hash was correct (see [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Lubuntu/comments/1bon4oy/i_need_help_with_the_image_verification/)) . I ended up using the ISO I got off zsync. Please do ask questions if you think it might come from there anyway. Anytime I boot up Lubuntu, I end up with [this](https://imgur.com/co1Ay7l) or [this](https://imgur.com/70L9wpY) . Notice how the cursor is displayed in the middle of the screen (it can't be moved). Sorry for the janky phone pictures of the screen, you'll understand I can't take screenshots. It turns out that when I get to that point, I can type out my password and log in. This hints at something being wrong with the login page (which I do *sometimes* see properly). I also have an issue where I need to try a few times every time I boot up the laptop, because it simply freezes before getting to a point where I can log in. I think that's a separate issue so I might ask about it in a different post another time, but for all I know it could be related so I'm mentioning it here anyway.

I'm currently trying to move from Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS to Debian 12, and everything is so much more stable and reliable here. But there is one problem: My Airpods Pro (Generation 2) don't really work. Let me elaborate. With stock settings, they cannot connect at all, so I added this line to the bluetooth config file (/etc/bluetooth/main.conf) at the right place: ControllerMode = bredr I got this information from this AskUbuntu Post: https://askubuntu.com/a/1429341 This fixed the problem of not being able to connect the Airpods, and made them work with A2DP on Ubuntu. But here on Debian, only the Hands-Free audio is working (which sounds horrible). I tried following some advice from this arch wiki page in a live install, because I didn't want to break my system, and it didn't really help: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/bluetooth_headset I tried connecting my other pair of Bluetooth Headphones, Sennheiser 450BT, and they worked flawlessly. I also tried switching btmgmt ssp on and btmgmt ssp off, the second one broke everything and I had to restart the live session. I don't know what is different on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS, and why my Airpods Pro 2 work there, but not here. Suspicion: The Airpods send some sort of non-standard/proprietary signal, and if they get the response that they are not connected to an iThing they start mocking up. I'd like to add that the experience on Ubuntu wasn't flawless either, and they would disconnect/the audio would glitch to static noise/corruption every now and then. I would guess around every 3-4 hours of use once, but sometimes 4-5 times in a row. Then you'd have to restart bluetooth and connect them again. It was a bit annoying, but acceptable. So can anybody help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it! I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 12.
