Now I can't find the place in the settings to change this to something else in the settings. And searching the settings for "search" brings up nothing :-/
Where can I change the search engine for the search bar on the home screen?
This is what I need to find again: https://www.android.com/choicescreen/ The EU forces them to provide me with a choicescreen so that I can decide freely which search engine to use by default. But like for cookie banners, the EU guys are not the brightest when trying to control Megacorps, so they seem to allow Google to hide that screen very well.
All descriptions I found refer to changing the search engine in a browser only.
(It is lamented elsewhere already what a pita it is to have the search bar down there, but it seems we cannot get rid of it. In case someone knows better, that would suit me as well.)

Use fingerprint in apps but not device unlock

However, on my new Fairphone 4, which runs a closer-to-stock version of Android 13, I can't seem to locate an option for this. Surely, there must be a way to achieve this, **somehow**?

The best solution for me would be to limit the size of the mobile network name (using ellipsis
...
if it's too long), but it seems to not be possible. As a second-best solution, how can I hide the network name?
I use Android 12 on a Fairphone 4, so it's pretty close to stock Android.

Squeaky voice with Microsoft Teams on eOS and iodéOS
On both Android phones I own (all systems up-to-date), MS Teams calls are not usable, since the caller voices are all squeaky. The phones are a Fairphone 4 (with the latest eOS) and a Fairphone 3 (with the latest iodéOS). The problem occurs every time someone calls, both with and without video. Everything else seems to be working fine, just voice is unusable.
Some internet searches reveal that the issue might not be related to MS Teams itself, but I doubt that, since normal calls and VOIP works just fine. So the question is: is there a workaround, some package that I’m missing, or is MS Teams plainly incompatible with de-Google-d operating systems?

I have been attempting to install /e/ OS on a Fairphone 4 in accordance with these instructions: https://doc.e.foundation/devices/FP4/install and I am stuck on Step 6 of **Unlocking the Bootloader**. No matter what I do, I get results like this when attempting to use the
fastboot flashing ...
commands:
./fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability
FAILED (remote: 'Unrecognized command flashing get_unlock_ability')
fastboot: error: Command failed
I've gone through multiple Troubleshooting guides. None have helped. Here are some of the notable details and things I have tried:
- I've tried on both MacOS and Windows, the result is the same.
- I've tried multiple different USB-C cables with both MacOS and Windows.
- I've tried installing the tools using Homebrew on Mac, then uninstalled, and installed using the official Android Studio process. The result is still the same.
- I've gone through and switched out the default driver on Windows for the Google one, as recommended here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fairphone/comments/slk2qd/e_installtion_troubleshooting_guide_fastboot/ the result is still the same.
- ADB works perfectly.
- The device "lists" perfectly:
./adb devices -l
List of devices attached
XXXXXXXX device usb:2097152X product:FP4eea model:FP4 device:FP4 transport_id:14
- I have done the OEM unlock process.
- Fastboot can clearly see the device when I boot to fastboot (./adb reboot fastboot
):
./fastboot devices
XXXXXXXX fastboot
- Version information in case it helps
./fastboot --version
fastboot version 33.0.2-8557947
Installed as /Users/XXXXXXXX/Library/Android/sdk/platform-tools/fastboot
I'm clearly missing something, but I've gone over the instructions and various troubleshooting guides in detail and I cannot figure out what I missed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry for the bad picture quality.
What happened is, it didn't remove the rounded corners and/or the notch, it just moved them farther down. So apparently, the OS doesn't seem to render the pixels behind the screen cutouts at all, and when I made the used screen area smaller, it just moved those dead zones with it. Even if I shrink the vertical resolution to 1000 pixel (which is less than half), the behaviour stays the same.
Is there a way to disable that functionality?
I want to end up with just a square display area.
It would be best if I can get that only with adb/onboard stuff. If you are recommending an app for that, it should be one that doesn't have ads/microtransactions.
wm size
over adb to just reduce the screen's vertical resolution and thus create bezels on top and bottom.
But after I did that, this is what happened:
