This has been going on for awhile now through various iOS.... I use apple contacts and have many contacts where ive entered a person's name along with the business name in the contact card. I have not entered any custom fields. I have first name, last name and company fields by default. On those cards, with both a persons name and business name, when I search by business name on the iPhone , by swiping down on the Home Screen to make the search bar come up, I get no search results.
But, when I search by name, I get the expected results.
The problem is I'm bad with names and more likely to remember a business name rather than a person's name.
is there a way to get the results to show when searching by business name for those cards that have both person's name and business name used in the contact?

I have a Mac Mini M2 running Sequioa and want to move/delete a contact from groups.
I am sure I have done in the past, but can't seem to get it working.
There is a *Remove from group* menu, but it is greyed.
On my iPhone there are options to *Add to List* but not on the Mac.
----------
I had added a contact in Mail (which showed under All Contacts) but was unable to drag or move to my Personal group.
I also tried to move a couple of contacts for people who had died.
Both of these failed.
I restarted Contacts, and later rebooted the Mac Mini but was still unable to move.
Later that evening I found the Contacts Edit option worked.
This morning on booting the Mac Mini I was again unable to move.
Any ideas WHY or how to force the option.

Contacts.app misbehaving in Sequoia on M1 iMac

iMac 24” M1 2021, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, Contacts v. 14.0
purchased from the Apple Store Refurbished January 18, 2024
Since updating my partner’s iMac a few weeks ago, Contacts is misbehaving:
New lists can be created within Contacts, and populated by dragging individual contacts from the “All Contacts” list and dropping them onto the new list name. On this machine, however, this usually works only for adding three or four names. After that, dragging a contact onto the new list name has no effect at all on the new list name (that is, the list name doesn’t change color or highlight), and the new list, when opened, does not include the unsuccessfully-just-dragged Contacts entry.
What I’ve tried:
• Quit and relaunched Contacts. Temporary improvement only
• Restarted the computer. Temporary improvement only
• booted into Safe Mode. Misbehavior continues after reboot
• run Apple Diagnostics to make sure the hardware is OK. It’s OK.
• reloaded macOS using local Recovery. Temporary improvement only
After doing any one (or more) of these, Contacts behaves correctly for another small number of drag-and-drops, and then fails again in the same manner. In all other respects, Contacts behaves correctly.
Multiple complains now appear in the Apple Community about Sequoia contacts not synching. The problem on my machine, however, doesn’t seem to be related to iCloud synch, as the new list including the contacts I’ve been able to add (as well as the entire “All Contacts” list) appears correctly both on the synched iPhone and also on the iCloud web page.
The machine is still under AppleCare+, but I’d like to find and rectify a cause, rather than spending time on the phone with Apple Support, or physically returning the computer to Apple or to an Apple Store.
Any ideas?

Steve Jobs
work steve.jobs@apple.com
from the
Contacts
application, it does only fill the To:
field as follows:
which is not a complete email. The syntactally complete form is:
Steve Jobs
Today a lot of Mail server quickly classify an **incomplete recipient email**
as a symptom of SPAM.
Then I would like to use only **complete** emails.
I didn't find an easy way to get or copy a **complete** email from Contacts
.
I tried ^+click and ^+⌥+click on any email field with no success.
I found an heavy method to get a complete email for a contact, I just copy back
first and lastname in the email field and add chevrons around the fixed part as in:
work Steve Jobs
But this method doesn't scale for an address book of 1000 entries.
Is there any better receipe to get or copy automatically a **complete** email from Contacts
?
Is there any way to extract from the command line (ex.: grep
, awk
, sed
, perl
… ) from the Contacts
database the 3 fields necessary to compose a **syntactically complete** email:
$first" "$last" "

The window doesn't seem to belong to a specific application, but when it pops up it steals the focus and keyboard input is eaten by it until I either click into the previous app or close the contact window with ESC.
The window is free floating (despite the pointy bit on the left!) and it can float above any app's windows. Here an example where it floats over my Vivaldi browser window:
I have no idea whatsoever where this pop up comes from. Does anybody know more?
I'm running macOS 14.5 on a MacMini M2
Many thanks for any pointers!

I'm trying to get the Contacts app on MacOS Big Sur to display my Google contacts correctly. I have the account configured and the contacts themselves show up, but the Google contact tags (what Google calls "labels" and Apple calls "groups") aren't showing up.
Further, if I add a new contact group in the Contacts app under "Google" and use it to group several contacts, they seem to be stored locally (they are there after I reboot) but don't get pushed up to Google.
Any suggestions how to debug this further?

I have vCards that were exported from the Contacts app of Mac OS X 10.8.2. From what I can tell, Apple exported the notes with RTF that was compressed with LZF and converted the compressed data to base 64 before exporting the vCard. I'm trying to restore an export but the current version (Sonoma 14.2.1) ignores the notes field of the vCard. (I sanitized the contact information but didn't touch the X-APPLE-OL-NOTE section.)
Here's an example vCard:
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
PRODID:-//Apple Inc.//Mac OS X 10.8.2//EN

A1DAEM0F0P4DYC0QoRAUBpAUB1VGxuAiBlAgBjAUBjAQu1IChBYnJhaGBhbXNlKQ9AFcA=
END:VCARD
The note in the above vCard is "(Abrahamse)".
I've attempted to read the Note with the following Swift code (the above vCard is stored on disk as test.vcf):
import Foundation
import Contacts
func readVCard(filePath: String) {
do {
// Read the content of the vCard file
let vCardContent = try String(contentsOfFile: filePath, encoding: .utf8)
// Parse the vCard data
if let data = vCardContent.data(using: .utf8) {
let contacts = try CNContactVCardSerialization.contacts(with: data)
// Print information for each contact
for contact in contacts {
print("Contact Identifier: \(contact.identifier)")
print("Given Name: \(contact.givenName)")
for phoneNumber in contact.phoneNumbers {
print("Phone Number: \(phoneNumber.value.stringValue)")
}
print("Notes: \(contact.note)")
}
}
} catch {
print("Error reading the vCard file: \(error.localizedDescription)")
}
}
// Example usage: replace "test.vcf" with the actual path to your vCard file
let vCardFilePath = "test.vcf"
readVCard(filePath: vCardFilePath)
The output of running the code is below -- the note information is not extracted properly:
Contact Identifier: 2035C9D6-6A76-49F4-A5ED-C2C073A517CE:ABPerson
Given Name: Jane
Phone Number: (123) 123-4567
Phone Number: (321) 321-7654
Notes:
Program ended with exit code: 0
I used the base64 command at the terminal to decode the notes from 2 vcards and the first few bytes were (from xxd):
test.vcf: 00000000: 7c00 0000 8d00 0000 4c5a 4675 614f d2d4 |.......LZFuaO..
second.vcf: 00000000: 5e1f 0000 4f4e 0000 4c5a 4675 59f1 0eeb ^...ON..LZFuY...
So the main overlap is 4c5a 4675, corresponding to LZFu. I wasn't able to match that up with the hints on the [Identifying Compression Algorithms](https://github.com/frizb/FirmwareReverseEngineering/blob/master/IdentifyingCompressionAlgorithms.md) page.
How could I extract the note correctly?

I've noticed that the linking contacts feature doesn't seem to be available on my Mac, even though it's mentioned in the Contacts user guide for macOS Ventura 13. I've tried linking my contacts on my iPhone, and it works fine, but the linking won't sync to my Mac.
Contacts user guide says:
> In the list of contacts, select the cards you want to link, then
> choose Card > Link Selected Cards.
However, the option is simply not present in the Contacts application menu on my Mac:
Thus, I want to be able to link contacts on my Mac, or at least have the linking sync up from my iPhone onto my Mac.
What I have tried to (to no avail):
- Link other cards (it's obviously not the case, given that there is no problem using iPhone)
- Restart Contacts
- Turn off/on the computer
- Try with a different Apple ID under a different Mac user
- Resync Contacts with iCloud on both devices
Any feedback from other Mac users, especially any possible solutions to this issue, would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

**Symptoms:**
I've got a user with 3,051 contacts in his exchange account. We use exchange online. He is able to see and sync his contacts with the Outlook app and his iPhone (running latest iOS, 14 I think?). He has had this issue for over 6 months now on multiple computers and multiple OS versions, all Macs.
Specifically, when we add his exchange account to the Contacts app, either they never sync, or a fraction of them sync. (On macOS 10.12 he gets 900 of them, on macOS 11 he gets 0)
**Goal:**
My user wants his contacts to appear in Contacts, because he uses the Messages app to text, and wants to see who is messaging him. This is a corporate account so we want to keep all the contacts in Exchange unless we have no other options.
**I've tried:**
1. Adding and removing the account.
2. Moving all contacts into a folder. (This worked last year but not anymore)
3. Creating a new contact in multiple places to see if it syncs. If I make it in Contacts it syncs. If I make it anywhere else, nothing.
**Question(s):**
1. Is there a way to check the sync status of Contacts within the Contacts app?
2. Failing #1, is there a log somewhere I can look at with details about the sync process?
3. Failing #1 and #2, are there other tools out there we can use as an intermediary between Contacts and his Exchange account?

I have a .vcf file of Contact cards from another computer. I wish to work with them on my computer without merging them with the cards already in my computer's Contacts. Each Contacts file is ~300 entries, and there is some overlap. The job I want to do involves only the already-exported cards in the .vcf file, and not the cards on my computer. Getting my computer's Contacts.App to work with a different data file, or importing the new data into a separate Contacts.app group, or importing the new data in a manner that would subsequently allow me to remove the new data from my Contacts.app, would all be suitable approaches.
Apple's help pages don't address the issues of segregation or multiple data sources. Searching the net doesn't find a solution either.
How might I import these cards, do the work, and then be able to remove them? I could import the other computer's cards then work with them in my computer's "Last Import" smart group, but importation seems to require merging the incoming cards with the existing cards. I don't want to do that, because I don't see how I might remove the newly-added cards (when I'm done with the job) other than card-by-card manually.

I could go through it one by one, and search for each number, but it doesn't seem to be an efficient way, particularly when there might be other contact cards that have the same issue.
I'd be willing to pay for a (not too expensive) app if that does the trick, or keen to try a command line or AppleScript solution as well.

I have run into a problem when I add a contact to Contacts group. Instead of adding a reference to a new list, the software actually removes the contact from any other group that it is in and adds it to the new group. In effect, it "moves" rather than "copies" or makes a reference.
**I need to build multiple mailing lists (groups) and some people I'm mailing to need to be on different lists for different reasons.**
**Is this possible?**

I have a particular contact I cannot delete from Address Book.
There was a birthday event in calendar for a person I didn't recognize, so I tried to delete it. However, Calendar said that I needed to delete it from Contacts, so I opened Address Book and tried to delete the contact. Right-clicking on the contact's name did not list the option to delete it, the delete card option was grayed out in the Edit menu, and command+delete just make the computer beep.
I found [this page](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5011903?tstart=0) with the below command to try.
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
It looks like it goes through and changes the ownership of all your files to make sure they're actually yours. Should I try this solution, or is there a better option to let me delete the unnecessary contact?
I'm running El Capitan, in case that makes the instructions any different.

I cannot locate the contact records in Contacts (app) on the mac, or in the Contacts app on the phone. I also cannot locate these records in the iCloud.com through access to my icloud account.
they appear to just be vanished completely out of icloud, which is very concerning because I do not know what the scope or impact of this is.
