In Sequoia 15.1 (but looks an old known issue). Using the GUI, I created a group to bind it to a folder and an application. On both, this happens: I searched the web but some solutions look very risky as they issue long command line strings in a recursive manner applied to the filesystem ([e.g. Apple post on issue](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6729832?sortBy=rank)) . If solution using this way is far from complicated, how would you, using command line (chown, chmod,chgrp?): 1. Bind (append) a group to a folder or app **without overwriting current users/groups**. 2. Touch/change just the group/user permissions on that folder or app (**leaving alone other users/groups on same app/folder**).

I have roughly 1200 Contact Cards. I'm trying to file every Card into one (or more) Groups. I can't find a way to identify the Cards that I have not yet filed. Here's what I tried, using the Smart List feature: Unfortunately, the 'smart' list isn't so smart (or doesn't speak my language). It yields nothing. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I even tried this, when my first attempt failed. (*Yeah, apparently the programmers at Apple who coded the field 2 options, didn't talk to the programmer who coded the field 3 options??*)

I'm able to able to natively access my iMessages through chat.db. and associated contacts through the databases in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources - is there any similar database for storing group chat membership/metadata? AFAIK this information is not stored in AddressBook or chat.db, although it is possible to access the group chat name through the chat table in chat.db

When I send a group text to this one group there is one (very difficult) person claiming she does not get it. But as the group text proceeds and she is personally asked to respond, she will respond. Can a person be in a group text on the same thread and not see part of the thread?

I recently migrated to a new Mac running Ventura, and it looks like it migrated three user groups. I've figured out what the first two are and am going to delete them, but I can't figure out what the last one is. Is _messagebus something I need? Can I delete it? No user account got migrated as being in that group (or any other group, for that matter). Thanks!

Is there any way to move a contact in Contacts on my iPhone into a group? I can create a new contact in any group, but I don't see a way to move an existing contact between groups. Seems like an oversight that I would have to go back to my Mac, or delete a contact and manually recreate their card in a different group, in order to do this.

I have (for some reason I do not know) 68 contacts in iCloud and all the rest belong to another group. The 68 contacts are syncing correctly through iCloud. How to I sync the other contacts which are in another group? I cannot see how I can add that group to the iCloud group. I am on iOS16 Thanks.

The macOS gui, as shown in the attached image, provides a way to add users and user groups to the permissions of a file system directory. There are also lots of examples of how to create groups from the command line, etc (dscl, and so forth). But I don't see anything on how - from the command line - to add user groups to the permissions of a file system directory. PS: The answers in https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/104898/how-to-manage-users-access-to-shared-folders-from-the-command-line covers network shares, but don't show how to do what the Finder does (on an unshared folder).

On my macOS 11 Big Sur, there are several groups titled "com.apple.sharepoint.group.*.plist" (where * is a number starting from 1 and increasing). What I understand - they are related to shared folders (a single shared folder equals new group with such name). What I don't understand - these groups, when created, have an attribute **"dsAttrTypeNative:IsHidden: 1"**. I don't get what this actually hides them from. If I manually set it to 0, they are still not visible in "Users&Groups", and if this attribute is at 1, they are visible anyway when listing groups with **"id -Gn"** command or through **dscl**. So what gives? I've checked other groups, and they don't have the "IsHidden" attribute by default.

I have MacOS "El Capitan" About **Sharing - File Sharing**: When a directory is added to be shared through the Shared Folders pane, then through the Users pane is possible add/remove some _Users_ and _Groups_ according our needs. It through the + and - small buttons But I did realize the following: when the Staff group is removed, is not possible re-add the same Staff group anymore. It does not appear when + is clicked and then through the small dialog window opened and Users & Groups option is selected. I tried removing and adding again the same target directory to be shared but nothing. How solve this situation? If a new or other directory is added through the Shared Folders pane, in the Users pane appears already added the Staff group such as for the previous directory case.

I frequently run a script that creates three files in /tmp and then moves them to the destination directory. I was puzzled by the error messages: mv: ./20170608-l.gpx: set owner/group (was: 503/0): Operation not permitted mv: ./20170608-u.gpx: set owner/group (was: 503/0): Operation not permitted mv: ./20170608.csv: set owner/group (was: 503/0): Operation not permitted The script doesn't use sudo, so the group wheel (zero) seemed odd. Checking /tmp (/private/tmp) shows the sticky bit is on it. But forcing the group to be wheel (which I expect that to happen) is not what Wikipedia (quoting a Leopard man page) says it will do. And preventing me from changing the group on the copy is neither. The copy ends up with the same owner—me—and my group—staff—so it actually *did* what it said was not permitted. I can see a rationale for what the man page says, but why does the error message say that something different was not allowed when it actually did exactly that? And why are files in /tmp created with group wheel when that is not what the sticky bit is for? /tmp is root/wheel as expected, WGroleau@MBP ~ % ls -latde@ /private/tmp drwxrwxrwt 7 root wheel 224 Dec 21 09:58 /private/tmp but the doc mentioned says that sticky bit prevents deletion by someone else but the owner. Since I was the owner, that doesn't matter. But it doesn't say what I *thought* it meant, which was to override the creator's group. However, the latter is what did happen. And then the error message falsely states that it was not able to change the group to mine. I use the "Send email to [name of group]" option in Mac Contacts. It's fast , efficient, and organized. I have run into a problem when I add a contact to Contacts group. Instead of adding a reference to a new list, the software actually removes the contact from any other group that it is in and adds it to the new group. In effect, it "moves" rather than "copies" or makes a reference. **I need to build multiple mailing lists (groups) and some people I'm mailing to need to be on different lists for different reasons.** **Is this possible?** Contacts is Version 2536, on Ventura 13.0

It is not preset in */usr/sbin* folder , inspected it as *root*. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

I did a search in Spotlight and got 500 results: I want to group them by folder. Is that possible? I tried right-clicking the column headers but there's no Folder option: I tried pressing Cmd-J to open view options but couldn't find a Folder option: Is there a way to group these results by which folder they're in?

When I go to check in the dictionary utility if the root user is activated, I confirm that it is not, anyway I activate it again, I change the password again, and I deactivate it again, this did not work, it does not work either to do with the "guest user", I have already formatted the entire system and I have done a clean reinstall of the operating system from scratch. I would like to share this between two users on my Mac. Specifically, I would like the encrypted image to be under user1's Documents directory but allowing user2 to open and modify it. I know that MacOS is a Unix variant. In Linux/Unix I would create a group and add the two users belong that group and make the shared files rw-accessible by that group. I can do this from the command line. Is this the best approach on Mac as well? I was looking for clues under the "Users & Groups" setting under "System Preferences" but I couldn't understand it. There are groups in there that I don't see in /etc/group.

I was not able to rename an existing system group via /etc/group nor via the tool dscl. Is it even possible to rename a group? Would it be better to delete and re-create the group with the same GID as before?

I have an android phone and a Macbook for work, I set up Messages on my Mac with my email account so that I could join group chats with my family. Now when they try to text me individually it all goes to my Mac and not my phone. I'd like to be able to receive all texts on my phone but still be able to join in on group chats via my mac. But how?

I need to create a Group in Contacts on my mac book air. Each contact in the group already has a contact card. I know I can drag contacts into a new group but that is too labor intensive, error prone, and doesn't alway work (I replaced my group with a contact by accident for example). Is there a batch way to create a contact group, say from a file with a list of contact keys (e.f first and last name)?

My Group FaceTime calls don’t ring on the receiving end. However, if I call recipients one at a time, their end rings and they pick up. It doesn’t matter who I call (my parents, sister, or in-laws) or if I call from my iPhone 12, my wife’s iPhone 12, or either of our iPads Pro. All of our devices run iOS 14.x (this has been happening since January and I haven’t noticed a change across updates). The receivers all use new iPads (we bought the family iPads in January to FaceTime with our daughter), but lack the skills (and we lack the patience) to help troubleshoot. Is there a fix for this?
