I have an M1 Mac Mini that has both macOS Sequoia and Asahi Linux installed on the internal drive, in separate APFS containers, each with its own recovery partition. However, the boot menu (power button long press) only shows one recovery option, and that is the Asahi's recovery partition. Is it possible to boot specifically from the macOS' paired recovery partition? FWIW, the reason I want to do this is I want to adjust the security policy for the macOS install, which isn't possible from the Asahi recovery partition, which is paired with the Asahi stub partition.

I need the boot manager at startup every time. I have a 2014 mini with 2 bootable partitions. Yosemite on one and Catalina on the other. Obviously, need to run legacy software. When running Yosemite, the Catalina drive doesn't mount. So it can't be selected as the boot disk from within Yosemite. The wireless keyboard doesn't interrupt the boot sequence for keyboard shortcuts to work. Haven't found a third party boot manager to work in this setup and a wired keyboard doesn't suit the workspace. I have the "sudo nvram manufacturing-enter-picker=true" saved to a text file. Too much to explain to the user,"open terminal, cut, paste, etc." It would seem that this would just be a line written into a file but which, where, how?

1) Info: I was running OSX-Catalina and Windows-10 on my MacBook Pro 5,5 with 8 GB RAM and 250 GB SSD. Due to a RAM problem I had to format the hard disk and re-install OS's again. Currently, I have replaced the 250 GB SSD with a 500 GB HDD 2) Info: I have tried multiple times to install OSX-Mavericks + Recovery + OSX-Catalina + Windows-7/10 on to the MacBook but only 2 of the 3 OS's can be made bootable as the other OS partition becomes non bootable. As of now, OSX-Mavericks + Recovery + OSX-Catalina are working fine while Windows-7 says "No Bootable Device - Insert Boot Disk and Press Any Key". Windows-7 was installed through BootCamp on OSX-Mavericks 3) Info: Windows-7 was bootable until installing OSX-Catalina. Windows-7 shows up in "Start-up Disk" on OSX-Mavericks but does not show up while pressing "Option" key during start-up. This happened immediately after installing OSX-Catalina 4) Info: The output of "diskutil list" from OSX-Mavericks is as follows

How can you tell / identify which macOS Recovery actually boots with a dual macOS installation in one APFS partition/container?
This is a question about after installing more than one version of macOS in a dual/multi-boot scenario, all installed in the same APFS container/partition. This is a question about after installing more than one version of macOS in a dual/multi-boot scenario, all installed in the same APFS container/partition. In the answer to https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/332715/apfs-is-it-possible-to-install-2-macos-versions-inside-one-apfs-container by @"David Anderson" there is a comment that states: >I can boot to one of the three macOS Recoveries stored on disk2s3 by holding down the ⌘+R key combination at startup. If the default startup disk is a APFS volume containing macOS, then the corresponding macOS recovery will startup. For example, if the startup disk is set to the APFS volume Machintosh HD 2, then holding down the ⌘+R key combination at startup will result in the Mac booting to High Sierra macOS Recovery on APFS Volume My Recovery. > >Note: macOS Recovery no longer appears in the Mac Startup Manager. However, macOS Recovery, for a given macOS installation, can be booted using the rEFInd Boot Manager. The question is how can you be sure which Recovery actually boots up? Is there a way to tell them apart to confirm you are in the desired Recovery tool actually corresponding to the current default startup volume (without having to resort to using rEFInd to select the desired one)? (context is High Sierra and Mojave...not sure if this can apply to Catalina)

**Early 2013 MBPr** OSX 10.? APFS (Sorry don't know the exact release, don't boot OSX all that often anymore) - What I broke, also don't see any local recovery. Kali Linux - Bootable via rEFInd Windows 10 Enterprise Eval - Bootable via rEFInd Okie, so background first I suppose, this trouble started when I tried to shrink my APFS volume to install Windows. I did this from the disk utility GUI in OSX and it completed with an unknown error, looking at the GUI partition table it looked ok and I didn't investigate further and moved on because, apparently, I'm a dummy, I was in a rush and yes I should have known better. I then started getting an error while trying to use bootcamp utility to get the windows drivers on a stick, thought this was a network error so I decided to reboot, and, boom, no OSX. At this point I went ahead and installed Windows to the space freed by OSX's disk util, broke rEFInd, fixed rEFInd, and now have bootable partitions for Linux and Windows, but OSX was showing FFFF(insert more F's for OSX here) as the GUID. Where I am now: From reading this thread found by googling my jumbled hexdump while looking for my APFS magic block I think I'm almost back, but I was getting lost on "switch the bits **AND** bytes" instructions offered by @klanomath (dude you're a legend answering all these broken partition questions) and I wanted to do my due diligence and confirm I'm doing this correctly before continuing. firereverie@kaliMBPr:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/sda skip=409640 bs=512 count=1 | hexdump 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 512 bytes copied, 7.9173e-05 s, 6.5 MB/s 0000000 9bff f313 75f6 5f85 0001 0000 0000 0000 0000010 8ef4 0004 0000 0000 0001 8000 0000 0000 0000020 584e 4253 1000 0000 9fe3 042f 0000 0000 0000030 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000040 0002 0000 0000 0000 659b 8290 b472 f14e 0000050 23a5 4b63 657f 6bdf f7d5 0007 0000 0000 0000060 8ef5 0004 0000 0000 0118 0000 6c24 0000 0000070 3352 0004 0000 0000 add8 0003 0000 0000 0000080 0078 0000 0acc 0000 0076 0000 0002 0000 0000090 0ab9 0000 0013 0000 f70d 0007 0000 0000 00000a0 3102 000a 0000 0000 0401 0000 0000 0000 00000b0 0000 0000 0064 0000 0403 0000 0000 0000 00000c0 0406 0000 0000 0000 9df4 0001 0000 0000 00000d0 4012 0002 0000 0000 6980 0006 0000 0000 00000e0 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 * 0000200 firereverie@kaliMBPr:~$ So if I'm reading this correctly 0000020 should be what I'm looking for but should read as "4e58 5324" (magic) "0010 0000" (4096 size) and "e39f 2f04" (part size @ 3818860292). At this point I should be able to follow @klanomath's instruction for rebooting to internet recovery and editing the GPT in terminal, but I really wanted to make sure I'm interpreting the linux hex dump correctly first. Thanks -fire

There is a Windows 10 EFI/GPT installation on a separate drive in my MacPro next to my disk with the OSX installation. The Apple Startup Manager shows the Win10 disk labeled as "EFI Boot". I can boot to Win10 there. I cannot set the default startup disk in system preferences. If I choose the Win10 HDD I will get "No Bootable Device -- Insert boot disk and press any key" error upon next boot. As soon as I bless the OSX disk again through system preferences OSX will boot again as standard. How can I "bless" the Win10 disk as the standard disk to boot upon startup? There is no EFI partition present on the Win10 disk. Thanks. diskutil list output: /dev/disk6 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *250.0 GB disk6 1: Microsoft Reserved 16.8 MB disk6s1 2: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 249.5 GB disk6s2 3: Windows Recovery 471.9 MB disk6s3 /dev/disk7 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *256.0 GB disk7 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk7s1 2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 255.1 GB disk7s2 3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk7s3 **UPDATE:** Windows installer seems to have used the EFI partition on disk7 to copy the boot files to. I managed to "repair" the startmanager with this guide here . Windows now boots on every startup of the MacPro. I can also access the Apple Startup Manager and choose my Macintosh HD or the Recovery Partition. As soon as I mess around with choosing the startup disk in osx system preferences it will break again with the "no bootable device error". OSX or the Startup Manager does not seem to be able to find the Windows OS on the other disk6 without EFI Partition. Interesting also is that even when I disconnect the windows disk7 I will still see EFI Boot in Apple Startup Manager. Choosing it will get a Windows Error screen not being able to boot of course. As soon as I have more time I will continue to experiment further... Maybe somebody with a better understanding of the Apple EFI Startup Manager can give a hint in advance how to make it possible to switch startup disk from OS side in a "normal" way. Next step to try: Add EFI partition to Windows disk6 put the Win startup files there and link to the installation on the same disk.

My question is why is it necessary to perform this clean-up? How do these commands know not to remove the recovery for High Sierra main or the second copy you installed? And if you remove these partitions, is there still a Pre-Boot and Recovery partition that remains? Please clarify.

I'm currently using a mac with 3 bootable partitions (multiboot). MacOS, Ubuntu and Arch-Linux. I can switch between the operating systems using rEFInd I mostly only use Arch-Linux but only gave it 30GB / 256GB when I created it. Now, I'm unable to update Arch because I don't have enough space left. As far as I know, Mac stores the boot menu on the disk itself and has been afraid of messing with the disk too much because I don't want to end up bricking the macbook like I've done 2 times in the past. Changing the disk did not work, and I got a new one warranty. **Here is a screenshot from that (Question was removed)** - Image - Image ---------- ## This is my plan ## 1. Clone the partition to a 32GB USB Flash drive using Clonezilla 2. Delete all partitions except MacOS 3. Create a new partition with 128 GB 4. Boot to Clonezilla again, and clone from USB to partition (This is the part I'm worried about) 5. I would imagine I would need to extend the partition aswell after the cloning. Are there any risk of overwriting the boot or bricking the Macbook?

Adding bootable diagnostic partition(s) to 2010 iMac (sans ODD) (fancy Bootcamp question)

I have removed the ODD from my 2010 iMac, replacing it with a second SSD. Right now, there are three drives inside: two SSDs and the original 1TB HDD. my disks Disk 0 (first SSD) boots Windows 7 (originally installed from DVD), Disk 2 (second SSD) boots High Sierra (installed from USB). At the present moment, both systems are bootable (by holding down Alt). I want to add the following tools to Disk 1 (the HDD) (ISO images are available): - Windows install - Acronis boot rescue partition. This is basically a customised Linux. It boots perfectly when burned on DVD (but there is no DVD drive anymore) - maybe a diagnostic Linux LiveCD The HDD is completely empty and either Windows or OSX tools can be used to partition it and set it up. There is some flexibility here. I have managed to set up a bootable Windows install partition by creating a MBR partition table in Windows, copying the ISO contents then fixing the boot sector using bootsect.exe and marking the partition active. This gives an additional option when holding down Alt and starts the Windows install correctly. However, no method worked with the Acronis image. I have tried copying the contents and setting it active. I also tried to "burn" it on a partition using dd in Terminal under OSX. At best, an "EFI Boot" option shows up at startup, but clicking on it simply freezes the system. What to do next? Which partition scheme to use? How to transfer the images? Please note that booting anything other than OSX install from USB is impossible on my iMac. (Yes, it is. Tried every method and recipe in the world.)

Can I simply make a partition on my Mac, install an OS to it, and boot from it via Startup Manner?
On my Mac, can I simply create a new partition in Disk Utility, install an Operating System to it, such Arch Linux, and then boot from it by holding alt/option during boot (Startup Manager)?

My MacBook Air (2017) currently has 3 OSes: MacOS, Windows, and Ubuntu (making it work was a nightmare). Yesterday when I opened up rEFInd, only MacOS and the Ubuntu stub loader (which, fortunately, still works) was there. All my partitions were still there, but... That was it ...only the MacOS boot loader showed up in the EFI partition. I suspect that this happened after the recent MacOS update that I did. But, I recently had a Windows 10 update that forced me to reinstall all 4 OSs and again set up the perfect balance of boot loaders I wanted (Debian is the first one - I am not using rEFInd anymore, nor want to). So. As it may be difficult to know what the upgrade does, can I protect this boot stuff on /dev/disk0s1 ? Would copying it (dd maybe?) and then replacing what is there be sufficient? Or would I also have to backup my gpt partition table (gdisk) too? Other things? I can provide other information if necessary, but here is a question I have yet to address about something else that contains a lot of info about my laptop: https://superuser.com/questions/1296542/out-of-the-blue-linux-mint-makes-the-unmount-and-mount-sounds/1297114#1297114 TIA!

Is it possible to get something like a symbolic link/alias to direct to another folder on an external hard drive and still have the files display on the desktop? I used: sudo rm -rf ~/Desktop sudo ln -s /Volumes//Desktop ~/Desktop But the Desktop is just blank, and when I drag files onto the Desktop, they disappear and are copied to /Volumes//Desktop I recently tried replacing the Desktop with an alias instead, but I now only get a cancel icon popping up next to the cursor when I drag a file over it. The partition is exFat so it's compatible with my tri-boot. I'm doing this so files are automatically available on each Desktop. Any ideas to get this working? I was also thinking about an alternative, something that automatically moved a file to /Volumes//Desktop/ when it was dragged to ~/Desktop and replaced with a symbolic link or alias on ~/Desktop. Is that a viable alternative?

So I need to have Windows 10, Linux and OSX on my Macbook pro early 2015 along with a shared data partition. There are several articles on the internet that say Boot Camp only works in so called "hybrid MBR" mode and may lead to some problems when updating OSX and it's generally hard to set up triple boot + additional partitions. However, all those articles are old and I've seen some comments on reddit stating that for modern macs Boot Camp actually lets to boot in native EFI mode. I'd like to know if it is true. Does it mean that I can make as many partitions as I want (all of them GPT type) and install not only Windows 10, but Ubuntu as well using only Boot Camp and some disk partitioning tool? Is there a modern guide for this? Thanks!
