How to isolate open applications, and ideally processes, in Ubuntu workspace?

I combine work and study, so I need a separate set of tabs for each task. For example: for work it is chrome with work-related tabs, vscode, obsidian.md and others, and for study - chrome, but with others, overleaf, pycharm, todoist etc. If you use built-in workspaces, the problem is that when you open the same application in one workspace, it opens a window of that application in another workspace, switching workspaces. I would like tabs to be separate, and ideally -- and processes, so that multiple instances of, for example, telegram, spotify, and similar applications can be opened. One way to do this is to have separate users, but when you switch between them, one or the other user instance goes into hibernation or shuts down. So my question is: how to isolate open applications or even processes, if it's possible, in Ubuntu workspace?

Somehow (I have no idea how) I broke my ALT + TAB functionality. I'm using Linux Mint (MATE edition), and when I press ALT + TAB instead of switching to another application it very briefly shows the desktop, then returns me back to the application I was on. I've tried enabling and disabling both the "Application Switcher" and "Static Application Switcher" in the CompizConfig, but neither has any effect. Even if both are disabled, I still get the same "briefly show the desktop then return to the original app" behavior. This made me think that I somehow had rebound my ALT + TAB keybinding, but when I go to Keyboard Shortcuts it does show "Move between windows, using a popup window" set to ALT + TAB. If I change it (eg. to CTRL + ALT + A) the "show desktop briefly" behavior goes away ... unless I then do CTRL + ALT + A, in which case that behavior returns. So in summary: * I have a keybinding for ALT + TAB to "Move between windows, using a popup window", and this binding appears to trigger the "show desktop briefly" behavior even if I change it to a different binding * I previously had "Static Application Switcher" enabled in CompizConfig, but whether I enable it, "Application Switcher", or none of the above, I see the same behavior Thus, it seems I've somehow actually broken the "Move between windows, using a popup window" functionality, completely independent of Compiz ... and I have no idea how I can restore it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Recently **Left Alt+tab** ( to switch between the currently opened windows ) and **LeftCtrl+LeftShift + tab** ( to go to the previous tab in chrome ) stopped working. **Note:** If I use the Right ( Cntrl, Shift, alt ) keys for the above combination it works fine. I'm new to Linux and I'm using Pop!_OS 20.10 x86_64. The system by default enables an extension **Alt Tab: Raise First Window** and I cannot *disable* it: I disable the extension from **Gnome Tweaks** and also disable it from **Extension** app (green icon). But Alt + Tab still just raise one window. Example: I opened two folders in two windows. Press Alt+Tab, just one folder shows (the last used one). It should show two options to raise one of the opened folders (like most Alt+Tab does). But with I only get one choice so I cannot switch folders. Example taken from another machine This image is what I expect (not what I get). Could anybody help me with this? Thank you very much!

Is there a way to tweak the alt-tab behaviour in Gnome Shell to prioritize the current workspace? Currently, alt-tab prioritizes windows used most recently, instead of windows in the current workspace. I know how to restrict alt-tab to the current workspace , but I'm looking to prioritize the current workspace, not make it exclusive. I found that the Coverflow extension does what I want - it has an option "All workspaces, current first" - but this extension removes the default application grouping behaviour, and does not offer an option to restore it. There is an identical question here and here , so not optimistic about finding a solution, but figured I'd ask just in case. This used to be the default behaviour on Gnome Shell 3.4, so kinda surprised that there isn't a way to do that any more.

I think I accidentally pressed something near the tab key because suddenly I was only tabbing through terminal windows! It was a pleasant surprise. I think I'd got to a terminal window, paused to see if it was the one I wanted, and then tried to alt+tab to the next but (as I said) pressed something else. I've been unable to replicate it and can't find it listed as a keyboard shortcut anywhere. Anyone know what I must have pressed??
