I have discovered that someone has gotten onto my MBAir and created me as their "client" using ARD [Apple Remote Desktop]. This is my computer. Sharing is not on. I have not given access to anyone or shared my password. The alleged person is a computer programmer. After numerous issues where I suspected tampering, (I have been through this before which prompted Apple to replace the motherboard), I started doing searches in Terminal. That's when I discovered that they are using ARD to remotely connect to my computer. In an attempt to get rid of this intrusion, I have used two sudo commands to remove ARD from my MBAir. Once either terminal command runs, a notice appears stating that ARD will be removed after reboot. I reboot but the person reconnects; it shows up as "restored" in a grey bar with a time stamp when I open my laptop. I started using the sudo commands in January.
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate -stop
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate -configure -access -off
sudo systemsetup -setremotelogin off
I need another way to get rid of this illegal intrusion. Apple had me do a reinstall of the Sonoma Operating System but that did nothing. Given the age of my computer, it can't be upgraded to the new OS. Can I find something embedded in Library on my HD that I could delete? Or a sudo command that will permanently block this person. I am not a computer scientist so lay language please. Thank you. PS: When either command is run after I enter my password, the Terminal message reads: Starting...Removed preference to start ARD after reboot. Done. When this person reconnects, I get a "restored" message in a grey bar followed by my login time.

I have two servers that haven't been touched in ages. Their passwords have been forgotten and I have a Mac where Apple Remote Desktop has saved their passwords. Can I view those saved passwords? I'd prefer not to reset both these servers and start from scratch. What I've checked so far: **Keychain Access** - This appears to only store the ARD password. I presume this password encrypts the connection details separately (and I recall the password here being the one I used to setup ARD in the first place). The documentation (for V2 anyway) suggests data is stored in three places, user library plist, /Library plist, and /var/db/RemoteManagement/: images.apple.com/remotedesktop/pdf/ARD_Admin_Guide.pdf The data in **/var/** seems to be an sqlite3 database with usage statistics The **/Library/** plist seems to be nothing eye catching. **~/Library/** plist (in containers nowadays) has all the machine details but I don't see anything resembling a password (encrypted or not). Oh, they're stored with the key name "accessCredentials". Time to learn how to decrypt.

I use Apple Remote Desktop and Microsoft Remote Desktop (running on OSX) for connecting to remote computers. Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD) has a great feature where as it connects to the remote machine as then you can set the display settings on the remote end. Eg if the host computer had 3x 24" screens and the remote computer had a 15" laptop screen you could configure the connection to use the remote computer as if the only connected display was the 15" laptop screen, the host computer UI is rendered at the correct size, it is not scaled and just made smaller. Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) as i have it currently configured will give you the option of all the hosts displays. If the display 3x 24" screens and the remote computer had a 15" laptop screen it becomes very dificuly to use the remote machine. There is a scaling mode, but this means you still have to use the remote screens, but can "zoom out" so you are now viewing a scaled version of the remote computer UI which makes everything very small. Is there a way to get ARD to behave like MRD in regards to the above ?

I'm hoping that you can help me with creating a unix script for sending a terminal command through ARD to multiple networked computers. I'm hoping to disable air drop on a set of 36 lab computers at my school. I can definitely manually enter the script below to turn off air drop, but it would be great if I could just do this "behind the scenes" and 36 at a time. The script that works is: defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -bool YES I have limited knowledge of scripting/UNIX/ARD, but I'd love to learn. So far, all I've gotten is for terminal to open: open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app However, I cannot get the script/text to run. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks,

I am in a need of a solution, where I can remotely connect from my PC/Mac to remote Mac Pro or Mac mini with audio coming from it. I will be using VPN to access Remote Mac, so I couldn't get Airfoil working for me (correct me if I missed something from the tool). I went through several tools such as nuoRDS, SoundFlower (didn't work on Catalina), VNC Pro (paid one also didn't work for macOS). Any ideal solution that would help me as I am looking for 10-15 users. So purchasing one tool or a year license would be a solution too but per month, per user, per session is quite out of context. Please suggest anything that you recommend, I will test it.

Because I support a few friends with their iOS devices, I've been trying to figure the best way to circumvent Apple's limitation of not being able to remotely control iOS, and right now I am **THIS** close. The setup is simple. I use Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) to connect to and control my friend's Mac computer, which is USB connected to the iOS device so I can see the screen through QuickTime. From here I talk to my friend on the phone or chat to tell them what they should do as I see exactly what's going on on the screen. The next level is when I activate this Accessibility feature called Switch Control on the remote Mac, which essentially lets you do actions on a LAN connected iOS device. And just when I thought I worked out my magic, it appears Switch Control won't recognise any keystroke or mouse clic that are not physically performed on the remote computer. Even the onscreen keyboard doesn't work ...damn! If I create a switch button (trigger) remotely, the remote Mac will register it, but neither me or my friend can use the trigger for Switch Control. If the trigger is registered based on a physical input, my friend can use it, but I can't, even through the onscreen keyboard. So it appears no matter what trigger you register, Switch Control will never recognise remote/virtual input for actual use of the triggers. However, I cannot believe there is no way to simulate that physical input so that Switch Control does listen to my input sent remotely through ARD. This is the only one single way to remotely control an iOS device in the context of Apple actively not supporting it, and yet just that small little detail prevents it from functioning. I'm basically looking for a way to simulate physical input in a manner that would be recognised by Switch Control. Note: jailbreak is not an option, and anyway Veency is no longer working as of iOS 12.

I just installed the security update on a remote computer and can no longer access that computer via Apple Remote Desktop or Screen Sharing? Luckily I had Teamviewer as a backup... Anyone else notice/got any ideas how to fix this? I tried cycling everything on and off a few times, restarts, etc. SSH is working OK. It seems to be exclusively the security update 2020-004 that broke it...I haven't changed anything else, and it's worked all year. Another computer on the network also on 10.14.6 is working fine (since I haven't installed that update on it yet...nor will I until I can resolve this). Thanks.

On my work Mac, which stays physically in my work office, I want to keep my work stuff separate from my personal stuff by using two different user accounts. I normally stay logged in as the 'work' user. But I want to have them visible at the same time, since I have a large screen. I think I could get a nice setup if I could use the built in remote desktop client or a 3rd party VNC client to connect to the *login screen* of the existing machine, so that I can select a different user. Or if I could connect as a specific user, even though the physical machine is already logged in as someone else. I normally use my system with "remote management" mode enabled (not just remote desktop), and I often use a VNC client at home to access my Mac desktop at work. Although this is not my daily routine. In this mode the VNC client immediately connects to the existing desktop. Is there a way I can force this connection to go to the login screen instead? When I use a VNC client to connect to the existing screen, I can see it trying (you get the kind of infinite regress that you might expect), so the basic connection works. I just want it to let me select another user. Edit: I think part of the problem is that the system might be running a VNC server session in the background waiting for me to connect. It connects to the active session. It seems to happen either when I have "remote management" turned on or just "screen sharing". Using an alternate user in an "open" command results in an error about not being able to control your own screen. To be clear, both accounts are on my work computer. From home I want to connect to my "work user" on my work computer. From my desk at work, logged in as my "work user" I want to be able to connect to the "personal user" on my work computer. I think my real problem is related to what happens on the server side of the connection. I want the OS to fire up the login window even through there is a user logged in on the main screen/keyboard. I know that is some circumstances a remote-login user can receive the login screen. It might be necessary for me to give up the idea of sometimes connecting to the logged-in user and sometimes connecting with a fresh login. If I can switch completely to the fresh-login mode that would be a start. How does Mac OS decide whether to show the login-screen for a remote connection versus just connecting you to the running desktop? I thought it was related to having "remote management" turned on vs "screen sharing". But with just "screen sharing" turned on, I still get the connect-to-existing behavior.

When I try to connect to my Mac Pro from my MacBook Pro (both running Catalina) via Screen Share I’m prompted to accept the request to screen share. Once I do screen share works correctly. My issue is I need to access it without being there to accept the invitation to screen share. It’s my understanding that as long as I’m using the same Apple ID then it should just automatically connect. Note that it does this when I connect on the same local network, but not remotely. Both machines have a login with the same full name and password but different ‘usernames’ that is the short 1 word username is different. Not sure if this is an issue in authenticating users? Things I’ve tried - Unlogging and re-logging in via my Apple ID on both machines - Turning off and back on remote management and screen sharing on both machines - Adding iCloud address as an alias to the account on both machines The only weird thing I note is my Apple ID is a @gmail address but when requesting screen share it shows as @icloud is requesting. Hence why I added the alias above. I can see both machines under my Apple ID as devices and can find my mac, use messages, iTunes etc perfectly on both machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Chris

I am currently working remotely due to the pandemic. I am one of very rare Mac user at my university. In Poland Macs are not popular, and our net administrator and our tech support have no or limited knowledge on macOS. I use desktop MacMini (at work) and MacBook Air (at home) both logged in with the same AppleID, running on Big Sur. I have installed Apple's Remote Desktop (v.3.9.4.) on my MacBook Air and want to connect remotely and work on my MacMini at work (screen sharing). I already contacted Apple's Tech Support and learned that to access remotely from different network router at my university's network has to have set a port forwarding (ports 3283, 5900). Can anyone provide me more details on that? I got feeling that I need a ready solution when I contact my net administrator with that to overcome unwillingness to tackle new problems. Best regards, Marcin

Im currently evaluating using Apple Remote Desktop for multi laptop and desktop management. Can it also be used for iOS device management ? We've got a range of devices - iPhone, iPads which are company owned. As well as staff who have their own iPhones which we install email, and specific business apps for them to use. Its very tedious having to manually type all of the usernames and passwords into each device and app to get them setup is there a way i can do this from my desktop via Apple Remote Desktop or something similar ? --- **UPDATE Dec 18** Now that iOS 12 allows 3rd party remote management software like Bomgar and Teamviewer (see article here ) of iOS devices. (All be it view only, with no control) Dose Apple Remote Desktop now offer the similar functionality including control ?
