It’s understandable that 5G impacts battery life. But I could not find any documentation that implied that the reliability of voice calls or cellular data could potentially have a negative impact, due to 5G.
Why is this disclaimer relevant? Where can we find more info about this?

The Apple Watch functionality has improved over time. An iPhone used to need to be left on and connected for Cellular to work on the Watch.
I was under the impression that with advances in eSim and Software Updates the watch could now make and receive calls without any dependence on the iPhone, except perhaps for the occasional software update).
Recently I learned that with AT&T that NumberSync is necessary and call do not ring on cellular unless the iPhone is left on and connected to the internet.
What is the current state of cellular connectivity on Apple Watch? According to Apple.com Cellular allows you to leave your phone behind and just use the Watch, but does the phone need to be online somewhere?

I have an iPhone SE 2 with a German O2 SIM card with an unlimited data plan and that is supposed to be able to use other networks when traveling in the EU. The last time I was in Sweden it often worked well and then there were totally unpredictable periods where it went down for a bit, anywhere from a few hours to days, then came back. During that time the phone might appear to be connected, showing full bars and LTE, but webpages never load. It looks like the phone thinks it’s connected but when it makes a request it never gets a response, not even an error one.
I have checked stuff like mobile data being on, data roaming, if my cell phone bills are paid, and also talking to some cell phone network representatives. I would like to know how I can investigate the connection under the hood with commands to know where in the system the issue really is.
Can I plug my iPhone into my Mac and somehow run command line commands to test the cell network in different ways, checking for confirmation that it is connected to the network, and trying to see specifically that a request went out and there is no response? Then I could know that it might be the Swedish networks that aren’t serving the number at that moment for some reason. Or, that it’s something else.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern or any rhyme/reason to it (e.g. iPad model, iOS version, SIM card age). Some show up, others don't.
The only fix I've discovered is to have the telco "push an updated profile" to it (not an "iProfile" - some sort of telco profile).
This fix works (after a device restart) but I'm wondering if anybody else has encountered this and found a way to avoid the problem in the first place?

I have an occasional need, when traveling, to access the Internet from my Mac using my iPhone's cellular data plan. But I wish to do so without making use of my cellular plan's hotspot data. While my phone's data plan lets me access "unlimited" data from my phone, my plan only allows 2GB per month of hotspot data. In other words, when I connect my Mac to the "Personal Hotspot" provided by my iPhone, I'm severely limited in the amount of data my Mac can access. I don't need an excessive amount of data but I do need a lot more than 2GB in a month. So I'm looking for ways around using the iPhone's "Personal Hotspot" feature which depends on my plan's hotspot data limit. No external Wi-Fi will be available during this time.
Is there any way to allow my Mac to use my iPhone's cellular data without using my plan's hotspot data? I've done a lot of searching and the few results I've found about avoiding a person hotspot is to enable USB tethering. But this is done on the Personal Hotspot settings screen. And when my Mac is setup to use this network connection, my cellular provider is showing that hotspot data is being used (and the iPhone has the green capsule in the top-left corner of the screen).
Checking email, general web browsing, and some file downloads can be done on my iPhone directly. But some things must be done on the Mac. Some examples of things I might need to do on my Mac while making use of the iPhone's cellular Internet access:
- Update macOS on my Mac
- Run an app on my Mac that needs Internet access to obtain data
Is there a 3rd party app that can be run on the iPhone that can act as some sort of proxy that the Mac can be setup to use? Or is there some other way?
I'm currently running iOS 18.3.2 and macOS 15.3.2.

Someone asked some time ago and I cannot believe it is not sorted: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254808545?sortBy=best
My use case:
- WiFi at home
- 5G in the garden
But as I walk around the garden, it loses the connection. The simple workaround is to have WiFi extender. I'm actually hoping for "software only" solution, a little switch: USE BOTH. WiFi and 5G, something that would say:
> use 5G always to boost the WiFi
Or maybe some machine learning *(if / else statement)*, knowing the exact distance from the router, and if increased by 5 meters in the last 2 seconds automatically fire up 5G.
Definitely doable. Am I mising something obvious?

For a project I'm doing, I want to maintain a connection to an offline wifi hotspot. I want to do this so I can interact with the device wirelessly.
I want to also, at the same time, be able to use my phone to browse the internet.
So
Device A : 100% offline. Wifi Hotspot Emitting.
Device B : Phone. Connected to Wifi Hotspot. Use Cellular Data for internet.
Is this possible? I have the newest iPhone with the newest iOS if it helps. I have Wifi Assist turned on in Cellular Settings, but it seems that just puts you on Cellular when the Wifi internet is poor (thus killing my connection to Device A).

But I would prefer not to activate it as that would require costs on top of my Android phone. The iPhone is a device that my wife has abandoned that I am attempting to set up with an Apple watch which, in my opinion, is the best smart watch. I'm aware that I won't be able to see, respond to, or make phone calls, but to have the rest would be great.

in a short while I will be reliant on a direct Iridium satellite connection only in order to get weather data.
The grib files are the only data I will process on my Macbook.
Now I know that usually once the Mac is connected to the internet all sorts of processes are sending and receiving data.
I dont want that to happen as I am on a limited data budget with the mentioned connection.
So I am wondering how I can most effectively prohibit the whole system to access the internet except that one process which will get the needed data.
Shall I
- Configure the firewall
- Edit the hostsfile
- Use third party software like Little Snitch
Any pointers?

Simultaneous voice and cellular data on the iPhone 6S Plus on Verizon

**Problem:** When the phone rings *(regardless of whether I pick up or not, and regardless of whether it's a VoLTE or CDMA call)*, I lose Internet access over the cellular network *(regardless of whether it's 2G, 3G or 4G LTE)*. I don't have a landline Internet at home, so "use WiFi" is **not** a solution to the problem.
Specs:
- Verizon iPhone 6S Plus 128 GB (CDMA)
- Unlimited LTE cellular data plan with hotspot feature enabled on the account, allowing legal USB, WiFi and Bluetooth tethering as supported by the iPhone's "Personal Hotspot" built-in feature, which is activated by Verizon when they detect that I have Hotspot enabled on my account.
- Not Jailbroken. Unwilling to Jailbreak in order to implement a solution to this problem.
For comparison, if I take out my SIM card and put it into any Android smartphone, I can receive a call over VoLTE *or* CDMA on the same network, at the same physical location, and use LTE data at the same time. So, no, it is definitely *not* a limitation of the network. The network supports simultaneous data and voice if your data is coming from LTE, which mine always is, even if the call comes in over CDMA at the same time.
And, since the 6S Plus supports VoLTE, you'd think that if the call comes in over VoLTE (which I've specifically tested from an Android phone that is definitely also on VoLTE and has great LTE signal strength), that the data would be able to continue simultaneously, right? Nope. The phone seems to be artificially limiting or killing the data, even though there is nothing inherent in the VoLTE protocol that says you can't do a VoLTE call and a data session at the same time.
**How can I solve this?**
Possible approaches to a solution that I've investigated:
- Is there some setting to change to force it to not disconnect the LTE when receiving a call?
- Is there some way to always forward incoming calls on the cell # to a VoIP number (Skype, Google Voice, etc.) so that my cellular # never rings? This will prevent me from taking calls when I have no Internet access on my phone, but that's rare enough that I'm willing to accept that as a consequence.
- Lastly, is there a way to keep my LTE enabled but prevent any incoming calls from ringing the phone (and thus disconnecting the Internet)?
My attempts at pursuing these solutions:
- > Is there some setting to change to force it to not disconnect the LTE when receiving a call?
None that I've found.
- > Is there some way to always forward incoming calls on the cell # to a VoIP number (Skype, Google Voice, etc.) so that my cellular # never rings? This will prevent me from taking calls when I have no Internet access on my phone, but that's rare enough that I'm willing to accept that as a consequence.
None that I can find. All the VoIP things I find seem to do the reverse: they'll forward your incoming VoIP calls to your cellular number. That's not what I want. I want the opposite of that.
- > Lastly, is there a way to keep my LTE enabled but prevent any incoming calls from ringing the phone (and thus disconnecting the Internet)?
Do Not Disturb mode may help me with this (?), but I think it would still momentarily "hiccup" the Internet connection, wouldn't it? I think it would, because the phone has to receive the call to decide to ignore it.
Any better solutions out there? This seems like something basic that I took for granted when I had an Android phone, but now that I switched to iPhone for completely unrelated reasons, I'm finding this to be a very annoying limitation that *shouldn't* be a limitation at all (because the network allows it, and all of Apple's competitors allow simultaneous voice and data, so why won't Apple?), and I'd like to work around it or directly solve it if possible.

I recently started at a new job and now work at home four days a week (I only go in to the office once a week for a company meeting). Because I'm no longer commuting regularly and obviously have wifi in my house, I'm using almost no data on my iPhone 4 anymore. I'm already on the cheaper $15/month data plan with AT&T, but I don't even max that out anymore; as of today, which is halfway through my billing period, I've only used 26 MB out of 200.
So what I'm wondering is, is it possible to just get a Tracfone SIM or something and use that for voice, then disable all 3G/data services on my iPhone? I already use almost no voice minutes as it is (I got the iPhone primarily to use data), and I'm now on wifi almost 100% of the time, so I'd lose basically nothing compared to what I have now - it would just be a fraction of the cost.
I'm assuming there's some catch here that prevents me from doing this, otherwise probably lots of people would be doing the same, but I figured I'd ask!

Every single time I connect my phone’s hotspot to my laptop, and *just* connect, mind you, and then check my mobile data usage, it reports that I have used an additional 2GB on my hotspot.
So I dove deeper in and realised that the out of the devices used, “other devices” have used all of mobile data for hotspot, because I hardly even ever connect my laptop.
How can I understand better what is using data through my mobile hotspot?

A very strange thing happened this morning, my mobile data was off and Wifi was unconnected while travelling on a train. But I received multiple messages via WhatsApp. I was also able to send messages that were received but no images were sent (I tried to send a screenshot of connections being off but receiving messages). I thought it had randomly connected to a network but the Wifi said not connected in settings. After switching off Wifi (hence Wifi, Bluetooth and mobile data were all 'Off' in settings) I still was able to receive and send messages. The only connection was cellular, but no 4G/3G or Wifi.
The moment I turned on airplane mode this stopped, once I turned it back off I could no longer send or receive messages until I connected to a network again.
I have found this very strange, and cannot find in the Analytics any data relating to connections to networks made at this time (is this possible to see what network I was connected to at a specific time?).
The only logs in Analytics Data at this time was SiriSearchFeedback at the exact time when I started receiving messages without being connected to any network.
Does anyone have a logical explanation for data transfers without explicit connections?
