I started recently to use an iPhone (11) to generate a hotspot (for my Linux machine) and I do not understand how the data flows to WiFi/cable.
If I plug the iPhone off and on again (without rebooting the laptop), it starts generating the hotspot also via WiFi (which I do not need, if the cable is plugged).
When I plug the cable, usually the first time, it understands there is a laptop and it generates the hotspot via cable *only*: how can I fix things so a WiFi hotspot isn’t broadcasting as well?

Is there a way fix this without having to reboot my Mac every time I reconnect the cable? Maybe I could just restart some networking service instead?

I have a MacBook Pro (running OS X and Windows) with a broken Wi-Fi card. I plan to get the Wi-Fi card fixed soon, however I want to back a few things up on the Internet before I hand off my Mac to the Genius Bar.
The last time I had this issue, I had an Android phone and was fairly easily able to download an app (FoxFi, if I remember correctly) and share my Wi-Fi connection with my laptop via a USB cable.
From reading answers to similar questions, it seems that according to Apple a Wi-Fi connection cannot be shared . I understand why a Wi-Fi connection might not be possible if you're using the antenna to broadcast a Wi-Fi hotspot, but why would you not be able to share a Wi-Fi connection over USB? It seems like it must be technically possible for an iPhone and not something that would be restricted due to carrier concerns about cellular tethering.
I basically want to use my phone as a Wi-Fi USB dongle and don't want to buy a USB dongle because I'm planning to fix my Wi-Fi soon anyway. Also, I don't have easy access to Ethernet at the moment.
Note: I do not want to use cellular data, only Wi-Fi. I would prefer a solution that doesn't involve jail breaking my iPhone. I do not wish to enable hotspot if I have to pay for it (I am on Verizon, which does not allow free cellular tethering).

I have an occasional need, when traveling, to access the Internet from my Mac using my iPhone's cellular data plan. But I wish to do so without making use of my cellular plan's hotspot data. While my phone's data plan lets me access "unlimited" data from my phone, my plan only allows 2GB per month of hotspot data. In other words, when I connect my Mac to the "Personal Hotspot" provided by my iPhone, I'm severely limited in the amount of data my Mac can access. I don't need an excessive amount of data but I do need a lot more than 2GB in a month. So I'm looking for ways around using the iPhone's "Personal Hotspot" feature which depends on my plan's hotspot data limit. No external Wi-Fi will be available during this time.
Is there any way to allow my Mac to use my iPhone's cellular data without using my plan's hotspot data? I've done a lot of searching and the few results I've found about avoiding a person hotspot is to enable USB tethering. But this is done on the Personal Hotspot settings screen. And when my Mac is setup to use this network connection, my cellular provider is showing that hotspot data is being used (and the iPhone has the green capsule in the top-left corner of the screen).
Checking email, general web browsing, and some file downloads can be done on my iPhone directly. But some things must be done on the Mac. Some examples of things I might need to do on my Mac while making use of the iPhone's cellular Internet access:
- Update macOS on my Mac
- Run an app on my Mac that needs Internet access to obtain data
Is there a 3rd party app that can be run on the iPhone that can act as some sort of proxy that the Mac can be setup to use? Or is there some other way?
I'm currently running iOS 18.3.2 and macOS 15.3.2.

**Epilogue:**
I have a cellular 5g connection with unlimited data(no cap) provided I use it only on my smartphone, if I use wifi hotspot to connect with my mac then the phone switches to 4g and a daily data cap of 2 GB is applied. Now I tried USB tethering from my android(Redmi note 9 pro) to my mac (MBA M3, 16/512, Sequoia 15.3) but could not get it working. However when I tried to do the usb tethering with my VM running it gave me an option to connect my phone to windows and hence I was able to use USB Tethering to my Windows VM inside my host mac machine to use this blazingly fast 5g without data cap.
**Issue:**
Now I want to use this fast internet from my windows 11 VM in VMWare fusion to my host machine mac. I am unable to find any relevant method to connect the two in a way I can share their internet. Please help me find a way to share internet between the two things.

When I connect to personal hotspot on my iPhone (running latest iOS) and close my macbook lid, it remains connected to the personal hotspot (I can visually see this on my iPhone) and the macbook remains awake. I noticed this at first after commuting for 30mins and my laptop was notably warm when I took it out the bag and low and behold it was connected to personal hotspot still - so I have to presume it's not sleeping at all.
How can I prevent personal hotspot from blocking my macbook pro from sleeping?

I have a Macbook Pro with Mac OS 12.6.5, and an iPhone 6+ with iOS 12.5.7
On my iPhone, I have turned on "Personal Hotspot", and assigned a password to it.
I can access this Personal Hotspot from i.e. my iPad, i.e. I can access the Internet in this way.
On the Macbook, I can see my personal hotspot in the menu bar among the available networks.
When I click on this personal hotspot item in the menu bar, I would expect to be asked for the password. Instead after maybe half a minute, a message pops up: "Failed to enable Personal Hotspot .... Check to see if the device is turned on and in range of your computer".
What could be the reason?

So why do I always need to **click Join** notification when I wake my Mac from sleep?

I have not been able to connect my Mac to my iPhone Personal Hotspot since upgrading to OS X Yosemite.
While I can see the phone in the list of WiFi APs under the "Personal Hotspot" sublist, attempting to connect to it fails every time with the following error:
> Failed to enable Personal Hotspot on 'iPhone'. Check to see if the device is turned on and in range of your computer.
This occurs even though the devices are only about two feet from each other.
- I attempted to "forget" the AP and re-add it, but this did not resolve the issue.
- My provider is Verizon.

When connecting my M1 Mac (macOS 14/Sonoma) to my iPhone's Personal Hotspot for the first time after a reboot, I see the 'interlocked chain links'
icon in the toolbar, and my Mac can successfully use the internet. However, if I disconnect from Wi-Fi and reconnect, I see the 'signal bar with exclamation mark'
icon instead, which Apple's support website describes as:
> No internet. This icon is displayed when a router and IP address can't be assigned to the Wi-Fi interface.
Is there any way to fix this without rebooting my computer? Basic solutions that I've tried before that didn't work:
* Using USB tethering instead: it works initially but suffers from the exact same problem if I disconnect and then reconnect the cable
* Turning Wi-Fi on and off
* Clicking 'Renew DHCP lease'
* Turning Personal Hotspot on/off on the iPhone or turning on Compatibility Mode
* Enabling or disabling Bluetooth on the Mac/iPhone
* Clicking 'Forget Network' on the Mac and reconnecting from scratch
* Putting the phone closer to the laptop

I replaced my old iPhone 6 with an iPhone 7 and transferred all my apps and data from the 6 to the 7. Most things worked fine, but not Personal Hotspot.
My Mac remembers my old iPhone 6 and remembers the Hotspot password for that old connection. I think my Mac believes the new iPhone 7 is the old iPhone 6 because they have the same name. The Mac shows the Personal Hotspot item in the WiFi menu, where it used to work. When I select the item, the Mac tries to connect using the old password. If I remembered the old password, I could change it on the new iPhone 7, but I don't remember it.
I can see the password on the iPhone 7, and I want to input that password on the Mac. However, I can't find the place on the Mac where I can delete the old password, change it, or delete the Hotspot item to try again from scratch. It just keeps trying repeatedly and telling me "failed to enable Personal Hotspot..."
I tried Personal Hotspot through WiFi. I tried Personal Hotspot through Bluetooth. I tried rebooting.
I just want to find the data on the Mac side and change or delete it (I think if I delete it, the Mac will try again from scratch and prompt me for my password).
**EDIT**: I found the iPhone entry under Network -> Advanced -> WiFi and deleted it. Still "failed to enable."

What is going on? Is my security in danger? Could this be related to MAC randomisation?

Lovely internet goes down at the house - I know I can use my hotspot right?
1. Wifi on phone is dead because cable/internet is dead
2. Turn off wifi and browse using mobile data - YEA!!!
3. Lets try the hotspot feature!
4. Turn on hotspot, oh shit it requires wifi - so turn on wifi
5. I can connect my laptop right? YES! Connected!
6. But phone has gone back to State 1
Is there a simple way around this? Simple defined:
- Without deleting wifi connections (having to recreate them later)
- Without going around powering off all of my routers and access points
(these are in rather inaccessible places)

**Side note:**
It's the most limiting hotspot I've ever seen and it displays the password in plain text. As soon as you open the hotspot, if you are working at a coffee shop for example, anyone can look over your shoulder and see it.

Where does it show how many connections there are? And can I set the limit of connections?

I found a article on this site, which says that
> Auto lock needs to be set to never, and it fixed the issue.
But that setting is already configured, yet it disconnects frequently.
Recently when I try to connect my MacBook & windows laptop with the hotspot, I see a dialog box, with title of 'join iPhone' and it fails to loads. so I cross it out.
I don't know what is going on but it is very fustrating
My phone is iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Edit: Today I tried with samsung hotspot and I saw the same dialog box and same message as in screenshot
