Can I turn off the microphone triggering on SMS in the
#### iOS 17.1.1 on iPhone SE 2020
Checked but didn't see anything obvious so far in *Settings* or *Accessability*.
Messages
app?
It seems to trigger all the time, at least with some contacts and wants to record audio to send a text. Typically, I have my phone already back in my pocket, stop hearing music and instead hear my environment, loudly. That's the cue to take the phone back out, stop recording and delete the "message".
This shows up as a red waveform thingy. To be honest, I don't even know how to *trigger* it in order to take a screenshot, but you can see the microphone icon in the red circle below.
I really, really, dislike this feature. Any way to disable it?
Maybe if I "downgrade" those contacts to regular sms, as opposed to iMessage people?

How do you set a sender of an SMS message to be a known sender?
If it is a plain phone number you can hit the info button and add to contacts sometimes. But this does not work always - I have senders e.g. my bank and my doctor that do not show a phone number just a code. I ask this now as iPhone Messages now puts up a note do I want to Report Junk which it definitely is not.
My bank is also in my contacts and shows in known contacts but message says it is not in my contact list and shows me the Report Junk link.
Also I have known senders that are not in my contacts - I think just by replying. So Known/Unknown senders appears to be rather random.
As seen in other questions here it is probably relevant that I am in the UK.

Eventually I hope to send an alert there a way to send an SMS via Applescript/Automator in either of these scenarios. Let’s assume I can check ink levels already with this command-line tool
lpstat
.
That will let me sense on request:
- When a low printer ink alert occurs ("Cyan is at or below 10%)
- With the periodic status of ink levels ("Cyan=10%, Magenta=50%, etc. every hour)
I'm building an automated photo printing station with multiple printers and it would be helpful to incorporate this flow to keep an eye on ink levels.
I don’t know how to set an hourly check, preferably with AppleScript.
Can macOS automation trigger a check hourly?

"Your carrier may charge for SMS Messages used to activate FaceTime"
I managed to get rid of it before but when I change the SIM card it pops up again.
It's similar to "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate iMessage", which I got rid of this time but I don't remember how.
How to quickly ensure both these messages don't pop up:
- Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate iMessage
- Your carrier may charge for SMS Messages used to activate FaceTime
Ideally forever, but I'm ok with a quick solution that I can quickly find back here on Ask Different.
Oh and I want to keep Facetime enabled. Not sure about iMessage.

My iCloud is activated, with nearly all features enabled except for iMessage.
I'm not sure if it's related, but there's this annoying pop-up that says "Turn on iCloud? Your network provider may charge for SMS messages used to activate iCloud" that keeps appearing. I keep dismissing it, just to be safe, in case my phone has been compromised or something. This is the first time I've encountered such a pop-up since using iPhones.
Anyone had this popup before?

Why is my work address included as an account under my personal phone under settings>messages> send and receive? Does this mean my employer can see my personal text messages? How did work email get there? I did not put it there.
Additional details:
It is a Personal phone - Only installed is Microsoft one drive, teams, and outlook from employer. These were installed by me and logged into work email account on my personal device.
Additionally, there is no other certificate or account or anything under VPN settings. Also, under certificates, there is no option under certificate trust setting for turning on. Only specifies trust store version and trust asset version.
Did teams put my work address under iMessage send and receive option in settings? Can my employer see my personal texts?

I upgraded to a new iMac running Catalina. Since I've done this I'm having a problem sending messages to my daughter and maybe others. At first she received no messages from me, but other people did. I fixed that problem using a solution from Ask Different. I thought the problem was solved. But now I found out that about a third of my messages don't get delivered to my daughter. We text several times a week and before my new iMac everything went thru fine. I text from my iMac, my iphone, and my iPad and in the past all three worked fine. Now they don't. It could be my daughters phone but it only happens with me. and likewise, as far as i know it only happens when I send to her. She doesn't receive it at all. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know what is maybe causing it?

Why does spam go to the Known Senders group in Messages?

I've read many posts on this, here and on other forums — everyone says "just mark it as spam and block them". But that's never an answer to 'how are the spam messages able to get into my Known Senders group?'.
Apple Support also routinely does not answer this question, e.g. , and my live support call from Apple had me go through the steps below + restart. I've routinely (monthly) restarted the phone, and this problem has been happening multiple times each week, for years.
(i)Messages fully routes classical SMS at this point. If my settings are to *'only receive messages from those in my address book'* then how do any of these messages come through to the Known Senders list?
1. I have "filters unknown senders" turned on in my iOS settings.
1. The phone numbers or emails are clearly not from anyone that are in my known senders.
1. I've never received a message from them.
1. They've never been on a CC list with me.
I'm fine if telecom protocols implicitly require that the message come to me — and that Apple auto-files it into a separate area (Unknown Senders) that I don't need to pay attention to. (I'm not actually but that's a longer rant +idea)
But why does the spam keep coming into my main Known Senders feed of Messages?

Instead of Toggle button for SMS forwarding (iOS Settings app > Apps > Messages > SMS Forwarding) in iPhone ,a grayed out text appears if the other Apple device is logged in to iCloud after the primary iPhone.
Messages in iCloud are switched On for all devices, and all devices are on latest iOS, iPadOS, macOS. iMessage is also On.
The toggle button appears for SMS forwarding (iOS Settings app > Apps > Messages > SMS Forwarding) in iPhone against any device logged in to Apple account in the following conditions:
1.) the iPhone is restored as new and logged on to the iCloud ID, after the other Apple device was logged in to iCloud with same ID. In other words, the iPhone under consideration and its Messages in iCloud are logged on in the last out of all other Apple devices (iPad, macBook, any other iPhone); or
2.) the messages in iCloud is toggled "Off" in the respective other Apple device.
Perhaps the above condition (2) is emanating out of the Apple support article https://support.apple.com/en-in/102545 , but the condition at (1) definitely does not seem to have any basis. The behaviour at (1) seems a bug.

What is the max number of SMS & MMS messages that the iphone can store?
iOS currently has a limit of 100 phone calls that can be stored in the call log. Is there a similar limit for SMS or MMS messages? If so, what it is? Where is this documented?

I have a personal iPhone XR. A couple of weeks ago my boss wanted to get business cells for a few of us (I'm a customer facing landscape designer) so we could ignore work calls when we wanted to. As a Mac/apple user for years but I'm no power user or anything, we selected 2020 iPhone SE.
- I want to push my personal texts through to my work phone so that during the day I can set my personal phone aside and not worry about it.
- I have both devices signed in to the same Apple ID and I think I set
it up right.
- Some things push through and some things don't.
Mostly what I've missed is group texts that include android users. At first I thought it was because it's only pushing iMessages through and not true SMS, but I miss texts from some android users but not all. Also I get regular SMS pushed through to my laptop and iPad....so that doesn't seem to line up.
Is there a general fix for having two phones, and allowing the personal one to forward everything to the work phone and being able to switch that on and off cleanly once a day?

I received a text from a number in my iMessages and then synced with iCloud and therefore showed up on my iPhone that I do not recognize. The strange thing is that there is no conversation thread. The only text showing looks like it came from my phone replying back to them saying Hi with an emoji after the Hi. It is very odd because it looks like it was me who replied but I did not. And there was no prior message before this Hi, only the Hi coming from my end.
Is it possible to send a text to someone and make it appear that they replied to this unknown number?

How to send an auto delete sms?
I have witnessed that a company can send you a PIN code by SMS (not by any other app or iMessage) and be able to delete it afterwards, like 24 hours. Is it specific to the network provider like sending a specific #xxx# code at the beginning of the text message or is it specific to iOS?

I've been using Apple Watch Series 3 for a while. I just upgraded to a Series 5 and while I love it for the most part, I have noticed that if the watch is on cellular and my phone is not nearby the watch will not send or receive SMS messages. I can make/receive phone calls just fine and if I'm on WiFi it sends and receives SMS without issue. It is only when I'm on the cellular plan.
I can _always_ send/receive iMessages.
I have unpaired and repaired the watch, I've talked to Apple and I've talked to AT&T. I know I remember sending and receiving SMS on the Series 3 LTE+GPS while away from my phone. Both Apple and AT&T seem to understand that the watch should be able to send/receive SMS while on cellular so long as the iPhone is on and connected to the Internet (via WiFi or cellular itself) but that the phone should not have to be nearby. Neither seems to know how to fix this issue.
I would really appreciate any assistance that anyone may have. I find it difficult to believe that my Series 3 was capable of something that they left out of the Series 5.
I found [this article](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208489) on Apple's site which also confirmed the watch should be able to do it as long as it has a data connection and the phone is on and has a data connection.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
When I send a message from an outside source to the phone/watch it shows up on the phone and in iMessage on the Macbook Pro / iPad Pro but does not show up on the watch.
EDIT #3: More talking to AT&T who still cannot solve the issue, but it is now back to an inability to send or receive when using the cellular plan.

I've read some articles that tend to say that app store downloaded apps on a non-jailbroken iPhone can't read SMS messages, which seems to be confirmed by the fact there's no "messages access" category under settings>privacy.
However, I remember that some apps sending OTP through SMS can automatically detect reception of the SMS and pull the OTP without intervention. There are also some apps that claim they can spy on a phone text messages.
So I have a doubt, and I would appreciate your input on this.
