I use a Droid 3 which has not yet been rooted. I need to remove access to the Browser or the Play Store. I already have an app called "program encrypting" which disables access to selected apps unless the user has a password. However, when the user enters safe mode, all downloaded apps are disabled, allowing the user to use the Browser and the Play Store.
I am curious if it is possible to disable safe mode in some way, or changing the button combination to enable it. I would also be fine with removing those applications from appearing in safe mode. I am new to rooting and such, and I would appreciate being able to remove access to these apps in the safest, quickest way possible.

Motorola Droid 3
Android verison: 2.3.4
System version: 5.7.906
System update report: "Your device is up to date! No update is necessary at this time."
Phone's age: 1 year
After unlocking my screen and opening up an application that accepts keyboard input (texting apps, web browsers, notepads, ect) I sometimes cannot input any characters - both on the physical keyboard and the digital keyboard. I typically deal with this by pressing dozens of characters at random until they start to appear again.
However, keystrokes are being somewhat recognized, which can be confirmed since each keystroke envokes a small vibration (set by the "Vibrate on kepress" switch in the Multi-touch keyboard settings. Further, my choice in texting application "Chomp" attempts to guess the word you're typing as you type it. Although no characters are actually being inserted into a message when this problem is occuring, Chomp at least detects the characters and makes word/spelling suggestions. Still, no words/letters are input into any text field box.
I'm aware that a factory reset would be a favorable method of potentially finding a solution, but am looking for alternatives.

I have been having this issue for a long time on my rooted Droid 3 using the ROM it came with and this happens daily with relevant logs being left or any clear trigger.
Basically what happens, and it tends to happen after the phone has been on for a few hours, I will send a message, usually with Handcent SMS (though I've experimented and tried other apps including the stock SMS, still happens) and occassionally a text will get stuck.
Now one of two things generally will happen. Either it'll sit "sending" for about 5 minutes before finally failing. This acts like a text bottle neck, because if, say, I have a multi-page text being sent, the other queued messages will send instantly when the initial text fails.
The other thing is that the text message will just sit sending indefinitely until I notice it hasn't sent and I delete it manually. If I resend it, sometimes those subsequent attempts will also hang.
And once this starts happening, it will continue to happen until I restart my phone, resulting in my restarting my phone several times a day.
An interesting observation that could help diagnose is the issue is once when I observed this happening, I open up a SQLite debug app and when I try to open up the mmssms.db file, it cannot read the file, which makes me think, perhaps the file is locked which is why the SMS process cannot commit the change to the database. Just an idea; don't know if that's at all related.
**Edit:** This does seem to happen more often after heavy usage, say playing a game. Could it be that' some sort of SMS-handling daemon gets killed, perhaps?

Droid 3 Gallery Generating Errorneous Thumbnails; Possibly Due to Infinite Loop, .nomedia glitch?

I have a stock Motorola Droid 3 on Verizon. The device is not currently rooted. I am not sure if the Gallery app on my phone is specific to the Motoblur UI.
I was testing the
.nomedia
trick/hack, by putting a zero-length file named .nomedia
in my Downloads directory. I also cleared cache and deleted app data of the stock/standard Gallery app. it didn't appear to work, so I decided to say "screw it" and deleted the .nomedia
file.
Sadly this kind of ruined things. I reopened the gallery app started showing duplicates of most (but not all) of the images. If I clicked on one, it'd only load the thumbnail with just "loading..." ontop, like it was trying to generate the full sized image. If I long-pressed and clicked "photo info" gallery would crash. If I hit delete, it would delete the entry from the gallery view with no problem. The other one of the duplicates appeared to be the real image so it loaded no problem.
Now, I could've manually deleted all the extra erroneous thumbnails, but that would be too time consuming as I had over 600-some correct images. So I decided to try a shortcut. I went to /dcim/.thumbnails
and cleared the directory and I also went to /android/data/com.moto.blur.mediaprovider
and cleared the thumbnails stored in that directory. When I went back to the gallery the situation got even worse. Now there's like 3 copies of the images.
My prediction is that it's generating thumbnails, then generating thumbnails of those thumbnails. I tried clear the .thumbnails
directory, which had over 2000 images in there. As soon as I restarted the gallery app, it'd fill right back up again. I tried the same process and rebooting, but again, starting the gallery app causes it loop with the thumbnail generation.
I tried putting a zero-length file .nomedia
into the .thumbnails directory but that didn't seem to be doing anything.
Is there something that I'm missing? I really don't want to do a factory reset as I don't have any easy way to back things up.
Also, I do not have an SD card at the moment. All of this is being put on the local storage for the phone.

I have the Motorola desktop dock for my Droid 3 (on Verizon). When I drop the Droid in the desktop dock it lets me bring up either nighttime mode or productivity mode. I'd like to change what happens in productivity mode. I don't need two calendar views, for instance, and I'd like to have the Gmail app on the right side, instead of messages, and I'd like music instead of the camera app.
Does anyone know how any of this can be modified? I'm happy to spend a few dollars on an app if it will be able to take over from the built-in one when I put the phone on the dock.

I'm trying to mount that storage to his laptop so he can transfer over music, but I'm not getting the USB Mount prompt that I've come to expect with my own Incredible 2. The phone does have a Micro-SD slot underneath the battery cover, and I guess we could put music on one of those and then stick it in the phone, but that'd be a hassle whenever he wants to put more music on, and I find it hard to believe that that entire 16 gigs is reserved for app space.

This might not be the right place to ask this question, as it falls under the purview of electronics, however that SE is not about consumer electronics. And this phenomena has only happened with Android devices, at least with the Droid 1 and Droid 3. So Android is where I stuck it. Sorry if that's wrong :(
This has happened with both the MicroUSB-to-USB (with AC adapter attachment) OEM wall charger and MicroUSB-to-AC-only wall charger.
Basically, when my phone is charging, the AC plug is completely quiet, but once my phone hits 100%, sporadically the plug portion of the charging apparatus will begin to make squealing noises. It stops once I unplug the phone and will begin again if I were to re-plug it in immediately.
Here's the thing, two other people I've asked cannot hear it. I promise you I am not going crazy and imagining things -- but I have been known to have very sensitive hearing -- hearing buzzing from old TVs and monitors and so forth.
My question, mostly out of curiosity, **why is this happening** and **how can I get it to stop**, as it is rather irritating.
This issue seems unique to my old Droid 1 and Droid 3. My laptop or similar high-power chargable device does not suffer from this issue.

I am having the feared random reboots in my recently acquired Droid 3.
It is rebooting more than 10 times a day randomly, both when idle and when doing anything in the phone.
The only pattern I've been to able to catch is that around 30 seconds before a reboot, I lose phone signal (the signal strength meter is empty and showing a cross). WiFi keeps working until the reboot.
I am located in Spain and using the phone in GSM/UMTS mode, with CDMA disabled. Some times when I lose the signal prior to a reboot, I get a pop-up asking if I want to put the phone in "global" mode for it to search for CDMA signal.
I am using rooted Steel Droid 3 with OTA 5.6.890, but it happened with Verizon's stock ROM as well.
I have googled extensively for the last couple of days and did everything I have found about possible solutions:
- Factory reset and disabling Google restoring features on initial config (to prevent restoring WiFi hotspot data, alleged to cause reboots)
- Manually wiping all WiFi hotspot info
- Disable WiFi
- Running with no apps installed
- Formatting sd card
- Wiping user data and cache from Recovery
- Checking if the battery is loose, wedge a piece of paper to lock it in place
None of this have prevented or even alleviated the random reboots.
I'm fearing my phone might be a total lemon, but unfortunately as I am in Spain I can't return it and get a replacement. Anyway I have been reading that people have returned their Droids four or five times and still get random reboots in every new or refurbished Droid they get.
Other than that the phone works perfectly well, and I really love it. But having reboots when you are in the middle of something is going to get more and more annoying and I fear I will throw it out of the window sooner or later. I really need to solve this.
I run
adb logcat
in hopes of finding what is causing it, but it didn't see anything revelatory. Here are the tails of my last 3 logs before a crash:
