Installing android firmware from default recovery mode via sd card

I have an extra phone, i.e., Samsung SGH-i997, at home. A while back, I installed **Clockwork Recovery** and installed CyanogenMod ROM on it. Then somehow, out of stupidity or accident, it went back into recovery mode, and everything on the phone was wiped. It even deleted Clockwork Recovery, and I guess that even the factory firmware isn't there anymore. Now every time I turn on the phone, it automatically goes to the default recovery mode with 4 options - reboot system now - apply update from SD card - wipe data factory reset - wipe cache partition I have tried switching it to **download mode** and connecting it with my laptop, but the drivers are not recognized. I also tried installing kies, which I thought would help with the driver issue, but it didn't. I guess there isn't any firmware inside that the driver would connect to. Now the only way left to somehow copy something to the phone is via an SD card. I tried copying several different Android firmware and mods to the SD card, but I think the default recovery mode doesn't use the external SD card but the phone's internal SD storage, which i why everybody is using Clockwork Recovery instead of default. I am really tired of searching for a solution to this issue. If anyone out there has done something similar or can somehow show me how to go into the shell, I might be able to find my way. Thanks in advance.

I've allredy tried clearing app cache and clearing cache and dalvik from recovery, I even changed kernel but everything is still same.. Edit: when device is freshly booted I can play videos on YouTube and from storage and Instagram, but when try to play any video in Chrome it becames unresponsive and after that I can't play any video anywhere - app freezes.

Whenever I come across a page with an embedded YouTube video and press play then the sound will be heard but the video will be blank (a black screen). The controls work just fine - it's just that I don't have any video. If I attempt to rotate the phone to landscape, then the video will briefly show just before the screen is rotated and then go back to being black again. Sound will continue to play just fine. If I attempt to rotate the phone back to portrait then the same thing happens again. This problem occurs in Chrome, but also in any apps where the browser has been embedded (eg. Feedly and Facebook). My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300) running CM11-20141115-SNAPSHOT-M12-i9300. Is there any way I can resolve this?

I am unable to download anything from the Play Store, the store loads but the apps won't download. I have flashed the gapps-20130813 package, cleared data and uninstalled updates from Play Store and Google Play Services, and it won't download yet. After googling around, I already cleared data on Google Play, Google Framework and Google Play Services, every single cache with Titanium Backup, cleaned up Dalvik cache, and removed and re-added my Google account. Still no luck. I also noticed the download notification briefly appearing for a split second when I tap Download on Google Play. Is there anything I can't do? I don't want to go through the hassle of backing everything up, deleting the entire data partition and restoring everything.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-I9195) and successfully installed CyanogenMod 13 with the CM 13 Recovery on it. Now I am stuck with the installation of GApps by means of TWRP. I have tried to follow this tutorial to install TWRP (3.0.1 or 2.8.7): 1) App Install Method: it tells me that something went wrong and it does not boot the recovery, indeed. What seems wired to me is that when I have to choose an image it shows me the device code **serranolteusc** and **serranoveltexx** for my S4 Mini rather than **serranoltexx**, like on the website of CM 13. Is this normal? (I even tried Flashify instead of the TWRP manager, but it did not function!) 2) Since I am on Linux and have no Windows, I cannot use the Odin method. But I tried Heimdall via heimdall flash --RECOVERY twrp.img --no-reboot to no avail. 3) I tried the dd Install Method via dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery, but it still does not boot into recovery mode. Is it possible that there is an issue with the path in of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery? Is it possible that there is no TWRP for **serranoltexx** available?

I have tried with the phone off and the down and up volume buttons, I have tried with apps that reboot to recovery, I have tried with the advanced power button on CM, I have tried with adb reboot bootloader/recovery and I have tried by just trying to install an update from the CM Updater. What do I do to get this into Recovery? Otherwise the phone is fine, but it now means I can never update the phone ever again which I am not happy about as this version of CM12 is not great.

Since I have a broken back button I have remapped my buttons in such a way that my original volume up button functions as a menu button, and my original menu button as the back button. I've done this by changing the key values in /system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl. The problem is, I've flashed a new ROM so I had to do it again, but now it doesn't work anymore. The changed values are persistent but my phone ignores it, it seems. And yes, of course I've rebooted after making the changes again. Anyone have an idea?

I plan to install CyanogenMod on my Samsung Galaxy Express 2 (Sm-G3815). I have made a backup using Titanium Backup, by choosing the "Backup all user apps + system data" option. I am not clear on what exactly will be done to my phone, what will be deleted and what left alone. Presumably, the backup I made will allow me to restore installed applications. Assuming that the ROM works as expected (and yes, I am aware that it might not) and everything goes well, will I also be able to restore * my contacts? * existing conversations from chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber? * phone call logs? * photos? * sms messages? Will anything still be there when I reboot into the new ROM or will I have to restore *everything* (except the data on the external card) from backup? I have quite a few of my apps on the external SD card (moved there by choosing the "Move to SD card" button on the application manager). As far as I can tell, this move means that some of their data is in the external card and some on the internal storage (as reported by the application manager). Will this cause any issues when I try to restore from backup?

So i'm having this really baffling issue. I was using CM13 before and now using CM12 and both of them are facing the same issue. I am using Galaxy Mega i9152. There are certain applications, that have been causing my phone to reboot upon install or launch. Previously, it was Yahoo Mail (which i have not used since), then it was some other games (names of which i don't remember) and now it is WhatsApp messenger. I thought the problem was with the CM13 rom, so i did a clean flash ( wiped data, cache, basically everything other than internal/external storage) of CM12 (hoping to get the 'move to SD card' feature as a bonus). But, it did not resolve the issue. I just tried to install WhatsApp on my new ROM and it restarted as soon as WhatsApp finished Installing. This has me thinking that the issue is not with Apps, but something to do with a deeper level. I'm not an expert in Kernels or such. So please, can someone help me out here? Any insight i can get into the issue ? WhatsApp is really important for managing day-to-day affairs, so please help me out.

I always used "Samba server" application on all my android devices for uploading files, it worked great with CM12, but in CM13 even with root access Samba server can't write to external SD card, neither can "SSH server" application. As i there was some changes in android 6, but is there any way to grant write access to external SD card for some applications? I tried different samba servers, they all see external SD card and can read from there, but they just can't write. I have the same problem with Cyanogenmod 13 on two different devices, i tried to format external SD card in ext3, ext4, fat32, exfat - no difference at all. There are a lot of "SD card fix" applications in play store, but they all, as I can see for android 5, and just doesn't work for android 6. So, is it a SELinux issue? Should I add somehow user an app runs from into media_rw group? How can I do this? There is id output after ssh connection: uid=10138(u0_a138) gid=10138(u0_a138) groups=10138(u0_a138),3002(net_bt),3003(inet),9997(everybody),50138(all_a138) context=u:r:untrusted_app:s0:c512,c768 It can read but can't write on external sd card, any ideas? Thanks.

I want to make a keycharmap/keylayout for my Bluetooth keyboard on my Android phone. I want it to behave like a Dvorak-US-international keyboard. So I did all the web research needed but I'm still missing one thing. In my PC, the apostrophe key behaves as an acute key, if I press it once and then press a vowel, it writes the vowel with the acute (my native language is Spanish so I've become dependent on this "feature"), so I want this behavior in android. In my PC: APOSTROPHE A = á APOSTROPHE O = ó APOSTROPHE Shift+A = Á APOSTROPHE APOSTROPHE = ´ (lonely acute) APOSTROPHE SPACE = ' Shift+APOSTROPHE A = ä Shift+APOSTROPHE Shift+A = Ä Shift+APOSTROPHE Shift+APOSTROPHE = ¨ (umlaut) Shift+APOSTROPHE SPACE = " So I made a keycharmap that has this: key APOSTROPHE { label: '\'' base: '\u0301' shift: '\u0308' } (As specified in https://source.android.com/docs/core/interaction/input/key-character-map-files#behaviors) But what I've got was this behavior: APOSTROPHE APOSTROPHE = ´ (lonely acute) APOSTROPHE SPACE = ´ (lonely acute) Shift+APOSTROPHE Shift+APOSTROPHE = ¨ (umlaut) Shift+APOSTROPHE SPACE = ¨ (umlaut) As you can see __I'm missing the quote and double quote__ and I'd really like to have them. So, I tried something different: key APOSTROPHE { label: '\'' base: '\u030D' shift: '\u030E' } (Looking at Android source https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/master/core/java/android/view/KeyCharacterMap.java#233 and at unicode "combining character" in Wikipedia) But didn't get what I wanted either. I saw that the character '\u030E' was comment-out on the source code ok, but I had to try. So the question is: How do I get the behavior I want in Android? Can't it be done without modifying Android sources? Do I have to use key modifiers (ALT or CTRL) and stick with that? (I'm using CyanogenMod 11-20140708 based on KitKat 4.4.4 on a LG Nexus 4 (mako))

I am using an original RAZR that is partitioned using Safestrap running stock 4.1 on one partition and CM10.1 on the other. My problem is the internal storage (internal SD card I believe) partition running CM10.1 has a corrupt file system and I am having trouble running a check and repair. The internal storage always shows 0.0b available and no files can be saved to that disk space. The OS restores to default on every reboot, I'm guessing the config files are failing to save when I get through the setup. Troubleshooting steps/questions so far... - Using Safestrap I have tried to wipe the system and all caches, then reinstall CM10.1 but no luck. The version I have of SS does not provide a file system check. - I can connect using shell and ADB, just not sure exactly what commands to run from there. Specifically how do I find out what file system to mount and how do I type that out as an argument? Do I use the fsck_msdos program that I have available in the /system/xbin folder? If so how do I find the file system information to complete the syntax for running the fsck? If fsck is the correct method to repair where do I run it from? Stock or CM installation? ADB shell or terminal from a running droid OS?

Got my S3 Mini with CM11 stuck at boot after adding external display simulation in Developer Settings. Just after that UI froze and I had to reboot. After that it freezes on "Android is upgrading" popup and the progress circle isn't even running. I tried going to Safe Mode but the only difference is that the progress circle is running all the time but nothing happens for another hour. Logcat says something like this: I/DisplayManagerService( 2137): Display device added: DisplayDeviceInfo{"Nakładka nr 1": 720 x 480, 60.000004 fps, density 160, 160.0 x 160.0 dpi, touch NONE, rotation 0, type OVERLAY, FLAG_SECURE, FLAG_PRESENTATION} E/gralloc ( 1671): gralloc_alloc: gralloc_alloc_framebuffer (google) failed, Out of memory E/FramebufferNativeWindow( 1671): fb buffer 0 allocation failed w=480, h=800, err=Out of memory Is there any way to remove the additional display without having to do data wipe? I have full access to ADB and recovery. Just this one thing stops Android to boot further.
