Since I have a broken back button I have remapped my buttons in such a way that my original volume up button functions as a menu button, and my original menu button as the back button. I've done this by changing the key values in
/system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl
.
The problem is, I've flashed a new ROM so I had to do it again, but now it doesn't work anymore. The changed values are persistent but my phone ignores it, it seems.
And yes, of course I've rebooted after making the changes again.
Anyone have an idea?

I can see why it is important to have a way to force-reboot your when it gets stuck, even though I haven't had this type of issue yet.
Is there are way I can change the force-reboot behaviour?
Perhaps increase the time in which power button must be pushed or change it to a combination of buttons (i.e. volume up + power button for 10 seconds) ...anythign that makes it less likely to be triggered by my pocket.

I have used Android for years and for most Android phones, pressing power + Volume Down together takes a screenshot.
I have used my Google Pixel 6 for 2 years now, and the screenshot function has always worked perfectly fine.
Recently, an automatic update added the Google Assistant function to my phone. Now, when I press power + Volume Down, it no longer takes a screenshot but instead, the Google Assistant panel appears. Google Assistant is not available in my country, so unfortunately this panel cannot help me take a screenshot.
I tried turning off Google Assistant, and changing the default Digital Assistant app, but all the combinations of options I tried do not bring back the screenshot function. Here are the settings that I tried:
| Default digital assistant app | Google Assistant | What Happens when I press Power + Vol Down |
|------------------------------------------------|------------------------|--------|
| None | Off | Nothing |
| Google Assistant | On | Google Assistant launches, but Google Assistant is not available in my country so nothing happens
| Google Assistant | Off | A panel pops up that says Google Assistant is ready, and an Activate button |
How do I get back the screenshot functionality?

How to fix the problem of power button stuck a bit inside and not working?
I accidentally dropped a cell phone (Honor 8) over and over again, and now the power button (the small one on the right side, below the volume button) seems to be pushed inside a bit and stuck there. It now stops working no matter how hard I push it. Is there a way to fix it? [

Cycling and launching apps through holding down power button: extra support for blind users

I want to use Android as a person that cannot read (for example, as a blind user), in a supermarket to read out what's in front in me via voice, using headphones, by pointing my Android phone with Google Lookout to the bar code or handwriting below each item I consider for purchase (and, the supermarkets I have been to, have barcodes or descriptive handwriting next to the items that can be purchased).
In order for this to work well, I would like to quickly open up Google Lookup by pressing holding down the power button and skipping beyond the power off/reboot screen and having an app suggested (in this case, Google Lookup), and have it fire up upon releasing the power button.
This would be very comfortable, and intuitive, for a blind user.
This is just a use case. Let me describe the generic functionality I am looking for.
I would like to configure a list of power off/reboot screen, app 1 screen (minimized, sort of like when you view your apps to choose from with the apps software button, but with just one app), that opens up when the power button is released), app 2, ..., app n.
While the user holds down the power button, the phone cycles through this list, displaying the app in a smaller rectangle, not occupying the whole screen, and opens it up when the power button is released. The user may then return to normal phone functioning and interact with the app normally. The app name is displayed above or below the app in smaller size when the user keeps the power button pressed.
This list can be configured in accessibility settings.
When TalkBack is enabled, and the power button is pressed, the name of the power off/reboot screen or app to be fired out on release is spoken out loud.
I feel that this would be a major step on making the phone more user friendly, to blind users, especially to younger blind users, that were getting accustomed, to using a device, and found a power button to interact with, which, once configured in Google accessibility settings, also via Google Assistant, could do all of this.
This would be nice.
Where can I find this behavior on Android?
When will this behavior be implemented?
I am using an Android 12 reale t8 5G phone.
Thank you for your feedback.
Thank you for your support.
Thanks.

Long-pressing power button shows Assistant, how to restart the device?
The long press on the Power button that I used on my earlier Android (Oreo) is now popping up the assistant. So what is the secret gesture? This is for a Pixel 7 if that makes a difference.

I have just acquired a **Lenovo M9 tablet** running **Android 12**.
It has a **3.5 mm** port for audio output.
All my **wired headphones** of various brands that have worked on all my previous Android devices, do not work with this tablet.
I can get Audio out but I **cannot use the volume+/-, PLAY/PAUSE hard buttons** on my headphones. They don't work at all.
Bluetooth headphones work OK.
My main reason for using wired headphones is so I can doze off and my ears don't have something sealing them, and I have a hand disability so find it hard enough to find my ear let alone trying to tap a sequence out. I can operate a controller though.
Lenovo couldn't help me but somewhere in the Android O/S **there must be an option to enable external device to take over controls using wired 'phones?**
Or, does it require the port to be of a particular type?
My workaround has been to use the Accessibility Shortcut to have a menu at side of screen to tap on, then I can use volume up/down but I still have to go to the notification shade to play/pause media. And that is still delayed with my awful dexterity.
I also searched for both the Headset Droid and Headset Controller Button apps which were both recommended on this forum 3 yrs ago but neither of those apps appear in Google's Play Store.
I do feel this could be remedied with correct drivers, but not a clue how to do that. I would be most grateful if someone could give me a fix to enable a hard controller. Or even a way to get play/pause/volume in an accessible but discrete floating button on-screen would help. I've tried loads of apps that just weren't that easy to use. Sorry, I can't remember which I used, they were all called volume control with no play or pause . Thanks :)

On the Galaxy S9 (and I presume later versions, though I don't know for sure) there is a "mute all sounds" setting that can be toggled by pressing the power and volume up buttons simultaneously. While this can be quite convenient, it's also very easy to either forget to disable it, or to enable it accidentally in the first place, and then you miss important alarms and notifications until you notice.
Is there any way to get a visual indication when mute all sounds is enabled, such as a status bar icon or making the perimeter glow a certain color?
Yes, I know that you can _check_ whether mute all sounds is enabled by pressing either volume up or volume down, which will show a greyed out volume bar with a caption that says "Mute all sounds is turned on" if it's enabled, but I'm looking for some kind of visual indication that alerts you that it's enabled when you're not actively thinking to check.

I have a galaxy S20+, and multiple times per day, when I pick up my phone or pull it out of my pocket and turn the screen on, the flashlight comes on too. It's very annoying.
The flashlight is supposed to turn on if the screen is off and you hold the power button. But often it happens immediately when tapping quickly to turn on the screen, instead of waiting for holding the button.
I don't know why or how this happens. If I try to make it happen, I can't. When I try to replicate the problem, the flashlight won't turn on unless I explicitly turn off the screen and then hold the power button for a second or so, like it's supposed to. The problem just happens when I don't want it to and I can't figure out how to fix.
Half the day my flashlight is on without me realizing, because it happens so much. When I'm at the gym I will often see the flashlight on through my pocket. It's so annoying. Often it shines into my eyes and hurts.
I've looked through all the system settings intensely many times. I can't find any setting. Nothing in the side key has any effect.
I disabled Automate and Button Mapper, but still it happens, so it's not caused by those apps.
I looked through Firefds Kit and Gravity Box, but no setting is there. After months being annoyed by this and unable to solve, I'm coming here in hopes someone can help.
Button Mapper can remap my volume key to do the same thing, so I really just want to fully disable the power key from turning on flashlight while screen off, to solve the problem.
How can I do that? I'm rooted and willing to try anything.
--
Update I found out that it happens only when the phone has been sitting or in my pocket and is picked up and try to turn the screen on at the same time, and it turns on the flashlight. Haven't figured out how to solve it yet.

I'm teaching my 85 year old mother to use her first phone. Her first ever bit of computing. The first use is texting and I've removed all the apps from the main screens except for the messaging app, and after a few days of casual instruction she's now texting and replying to texts very well.
I've only taught her two other buttons so far:
Home (she insists on calling it the 'Hut' button so if I call it the 'Hut' button she knows what I mean).
Back/Undo button
If she gets into something that she doesn't understand her instructions are to hit 'Hut' or 'Undo' and that will cure most things.
However she still gets caught out pressing the search button which brings up 'the internet' and that's currently really confusing, too much for her to handle :-)
This is a Samsung I5503T so has a physical 'Search' button on the lower right. It's right beside the undo/back button so gets hit by mistake (a lot). Is there any way to disable the physical 'Search' button or reassign it so it does nothing.
I'll eventually add more apps but starting slowly (since I live in a different town so most support is by landline phone :-(

With the latest update it is no longer true -- the central part of this bottom pane now took app toolbar (with important and recent apps). The navigational buttons are now pushed to the right and they are not as easy to access as before.
How do I get rid of this new app toolbar?

I've gotten stuck trying to upgrade a Glorystar Nebula 15 kiosk Android tablet (as customized for the orphaned Flywheel spin-bikes) to a vendor-provided **single-file** Android 7.1 firmware image (
7.20191202.115231.img
, 715MB).
A special challenge here: this tablet has **no physical buttons whatsever**: no power, no volume controls, no home. (It simply turns on whenever power is supplied; there's a click power toggle inline on the DC power cord plugging into the back. It's got no battery for unplugged use.)
Following the vendor's instructions (using a Windows AndroidTool
program 2.35
), it was able to 'Switch' to detecting a LOADER device, and appeared to write firmware - but after a lack of progress ending on a log line mentioning 'Success', I disconnected & power-cycled in an attempt to view my hopefully-fresh-new-stock-Android7.1 tablet - and instead found it in a state where it never proceeds past a 'GS' logo boot screen.
Currently, from this GS screen:
* the tablet only ever appears as "Found One ADB Device" in the Windows AndroidTool
, whereas previously it could 'Switch' to "LOADER"
* it can be detected via adb
from MacOS – but oddly, not via adb
inside the same Windows10 VM for which AndroidTool
was sorta-working.and, adb shell
commands give a error about the sh-path not being valid.
* adb
can reboot it into recovery mode - but without physical buttons, no navigation/selection from the recovery menu is yet possible, and it does not appear to adb
or AndroidTool
in this mode
* adb
can seemingly also reboot it into bootloader
or fastboot
mode; in this mode it no longer appears to MacOS adb
, but does appear in MacOS fastboot devices
list. However, attempting to connect the tablet while in this mode to Windows AndroidTool
still only ever shows "Found One ADB Device" (or nothing)
I'm looking for any path out of this dead-end state that allows a re-attempt of the flashing the original vendor single-file firmware IMG, or other potential Android 7.1 firmwares. For example:
* I've found a header on the motherboard with pins GND / PWR / HOME / ESC / V+ / V- / MENU / K2 / K1. However, hand-shorting PWR or V+ to GND with a small wire (alone or together, at the 'recovery' menu that's supposedly looking for vol-nav inputs or other times), has had no visible effect since the tablet's been in this state.
* Can the vendor's single IMG be broken into the smaller more-specific parts that fastboot
seems limited to flashing? Can applying those, or some other, smaller steps restore a true "Found One LOADER Device" mode, such that the AndroidTool
might be able to make another attempt?
Etc – open to whatever gets Android 7.1 on this device, including, at this point, all-or-nothing gambits to resuscitate or brick it.
Any ideas?

My Samsung galaxy j5 (2015) is stuck in recovery mode, If I pull and put back the battery it boots in recovery, if I let the battery run out and then charge again it still boots automatically in recovery mode.
No custom recovery, no custom rom, it is rooted, I can't remember if usb debugging was on.
On the bottom it says:
No Support SINGLE-SKU
Supported API: 3
dm-verity verification failed...
One day I accidentally restarted it on recovery because the power button is broken and I use an app to turn it off, it has remained like this since, it was fine before.
I tried using adb but I don't know why my pc can't see the device.
I really don't want to lose my data.
Can someone help me?
(Btw, why when I press a button the selected option becomes green?)

My phone is a moto e20 with no removable battery and no removable case. I need to use my phone once before sending it to repair and since Google's "Find my device" tool lets you play sounds, lock your screen and erase all data, it might be possible to send the power button signal from external sources.
**Edit:** Fingerprint sensor won't work either since the device doesn't have any finger registered.
