Samsung: Backing up messages fails

I am trying to back up a Samsung S5 mini (SM-G800F, running Android 5.1.1) using either Samsung Kies or SmartSwitch. With either program, the backup stalls for a very long time when it gets to backing up messages. When it finally recovers, it announces that backing up messages has failed (the rest of the items are fine).
> The following categories have failed to back up due to an error.

> Messages — Device not responding.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? What could be the root cause? Is there anything I can do on the phone itself to correct this, and allow messages to get backed up as well?
In the past backup has worked correctly with the same phone.

I am using an old Galaxy S5 mini with LOS-GAPPS-free as a wireless touchpad. :)
It is nice, but I'd like the battery to last more than a day. (In flight-mode, with the screen off, and its used battery, the s5-mini achieves more than a week of battery life!! remember this is w/o GAPPs!)
How cool would it be to have an old device be your PC's touchpad and last over a week?!!
It all boils down to the processes that are active.
I certainly don't need 83 for a touchpad!

I have used Link2SD to deinstall and deactivate software and features in devices before to save machine-resources. It gives the option to Freeze as well, but many times, I have an annoying message that appears every 3 seconds about an app crashing. Like telephony. My smatphone-touchpad doesn't need telephony or gps services running. I would happily turn them off if the OS would stop annoying me about it being off and rebooting to recovery by itself!

I have two Samsung Galaxy S5 minis, one of which has the following problem:
The voice quality is really bad on phone calls to other people (muffled sound, chopped, extra noise/interference, echo).
I suspect it has nothing to do with the network strength, as the voice quality of the other device is very good in the same spots.
To rule out hardware issues, I called other people via WhatsApp. Everything is just fine there. Also voice notes on WhatsApp do not show any problems. So I would suspect that the microphone is ok.
I must admit that I did not try to reset the phone yet (factory reset), as I would not like to spend the time on reconfiguring everything to my needs - just to find out the problem persist.
So is there anything I can do before trying a factory reset or even send the phone in for inspection? Is there any setting that I can change? I removed some of the preinstalled apps, could this be an issue? Or is there another caller/phone app that I can try?

Model: SM-G800H
Android: 6.0.1
Build: MMB29M.G800HXXU1CPK1
Also I have tried all the steps here https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/146513/how-to-adopt-sd-card-as-internal-storage-on-samsung-devices
But no success so the question is has anyone managed to get it working specifically for S5 mini duos, is there something more restrictive about this version? The post above does mention in a comment that someone might have got it working for S5 (mini duos?). Would be wonderful to know how, what exact steps.
This is after rooting the phone. Did they manage to get ASPlugin to work if so how exactly.
Any thoughts much appreciated.

I saw a video and some discussion where people just plug and play gamepads on to Android phones.
I've got a Samsung S5 mini (SM G800F, Android 4.4.2, not rooted). Bought a wire USB SNES Clone + OTG from ebay, plugged to my phone but nothing happened: tested on games, an app to debug gamepads, with a different and new USB Gamepad etc; I thought the USB OTG was damaged, because I tested with two different usb gamepads, so I bought a new setup ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301836055385 ) + a different OTG cable from a different manufacturer. It doesn't work!
Used this app to check for OTG support:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.btssm.doihaveotg
It's supported but no devices are listed / none found;
Devices tested:

- I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S5 (mini, if that makes a difference) rooted through Odin
- I made a back-up of the Gallery app & data with Titanium Backup
- I deleted the Gallery app
- I want the Gallery app back as deleting it has been causing problems on my phone
**I have tried:**
- **restoring the app through Titanium Backup.** TB ends up getting stuck in an infinite restore loop and does not restore the app
(although it does create a 0B entry in the app registry or whatever)
- **extracting the TB backup, copying it in the /system/app/Gallery folder, and installing it through ES File Explorer.** On
installing, I get the error "there was a problem parsing the
package."
I don't know what to try next and am not very knowledgeable in flashing, etc. What is the easiest, safest, and least painful way to restore my Gallery app? Is there somewhere I could re-download it?
Thank you.
Edit: When trying to install the app from the Downloads folder from ES File Explorer, it attempts to install the app but then gives "App not installed" error.

Three or four months ago, whenever I tried to connect to Play Store or my gmail account etc. my phone returned a network related error message, which happened after I made a factory reset. Some games encountered errors too.
I tried to flash a rom from sd card, but it did not install even though it said that installation was successful. Odin doesn't recognize my phone, and there is no root, so rom installer won't work because I can't install custom recovery without root (correct me if I'm wrong).
In this desperate situation of mine is there at least something I can do (except buying a new phone)?

The phone suddenly becomes unresponsive, the screen goes black and it does not give any signs of 'life'. Pushing any button does not do anything. Keeping the power button 7sec for the device to power off is not working. The only solution to 'revive' the device is to pull off the battery.
While in this state, notifications, alarms, calls etc are not working.
