I have an EPSON printer that I use to scan documents. I find that regardless of the file format and target DPI in the AirPrint scanner settings, it comes out with very visible JPEG artifacts, leading me to believe that there is some sort of compression going on within AirPrint. Scanning directly from the printer to a USB with JPEG does not leave artifacts of this magnitude. [Edit: it might be just masked by other noise. See added comparison photo. Or is it actually not JPEG noise, just noise that the AirPrint managed to remove from the background but not around the text?] Is this a problem with AirPrint? Is it possible to scan lossless over AirPrint? Edit: I also tried EPSON's own scanning utility downloaded from the support section of the printer page. Selecting "TIFF" results in a 100MB file with similar magnitude of artifacts. Is this then a problem with how EPSON handles wireless transfer of image? Edit 2: see comparison between three printing methods. TIFF and BMP files are uncompressed. JPEG file are compressed at 94% quality based on output of imagemagick. From left to right: vuescan, canon JPEG to USB thumb drive, AirPrint. All set to 600DPI. enter image description here

I have a fiber optic connection with a Huawei OptiXstar Wi-Fi 6 router, recently installed as an upgrade over the previous one (a FritzBox 7490). My printer is a Canon i-Sensys LBP223DW which, until before this change, was always being recognised without any issue by all my (and my partner's) devices. The line is configured with a 2.4 and a 5 GHz networks. All devices (an iPhone 6S+ & an iPhone XS; an iPad Pro 9.7 (2015), an iPad Air 2020, and an iPad Pro 2018; a Mac mini 2018 and a MacBook Pro M3 Max) connect flawlessly to both networks. IoT devices (we have very few, a dehumidifier, a vacuum cleaner, and the printer) require 2.4 GHz networks—no idea if this is due to their age or other choices. My workflow was to go to print a document, tap on Select Printer, and it would be there in the list waiting for me. Today, I noticed this was no longer the case. I reset the printer and reconfigured it from scratch, adding it to the local 2.4 GHz network. The printer's screen said connection was "Good", and the name of the network was correct. Yet, the MBP M3 Max with macOS 15.1 would see it (as it was configured before in Sonoma) with a yellow light. It would not print. I removed it and tried to add it again. macOS would not see it as before. From the printer screen, I browsed to find its IP address, then, on macOS, added the printer through the IP tab, which worked. My iPhone XS (iOS 18.1) and iPad Pro (iPadOS 18.1) would not see it. I restarted the printer, then those devices would see the printer. My partner's devices (iPhone on iOS 16.7, iPad Pro on iPadOS 16.7.10, iPad Air on iPadOS 17.6), though, would not find the printer *unless* they would switch their wifi connection to the 2.4 GHz as well, something that neither the Mac nor my other devices had to do. I tried to restart the devices, to forget the networks and reconnect, nothing. If they are on the 5 GHz they would not find the printer. Honestly, this looks like a stupid issue, but I have no idea how to work around it? Is it my new router doing something against specific devices which have an older internet protocol? Please notice that their connectivity is perfect though. Is it the printer? What would you suggest me to do? Thank you!

Is it possible, or does the server need to be on the same subnet? Possible options seem to be: 1. install cups-browsed (does not appear to exist on modern MacOS) 1. Configuring client.conf to point at remote server (this removes local printers though) 1. Setting up DNS-SD as per http://www.dns-sd.org/ServerStaticSetup.html#AirPrint None of these appear to be a viable option to get MacOS to discover a CUPS server on a different subnet using only local changes. "Modern" in this case should mean it works on MacOS 11 and higher.

# Background # I'm trying to implement AirPrint through static DNS, like documented on http://dns-sd.org/ServerStaticSetup.html . The iPad gets the dns search domain "lan" through DHCP, and I verified that in Settings-WLAN. I think I created all necessary entries in the right places, the iPad however doesn't find my printer or if it happened to find it, it showed a lock after the printers name and didn't print. I suspect our network is too locked down to allow this. But I haven't been able to find any documentation that specifically outlines the requirements for AirPrint in terms of ports required, etc. I need to be able to give my network admin something concrete in terms of what he needs to do to open this up for me. Does such a document exist? Or can someone at least give me pointers on what needs to be opened up?

Since AirPrint seems to always work from an iOS device without needing to install any driver, does that also guarantee that the printer would work with macOS Catalina?

I was recently hired as an IT supporter on a school for kids with autism and other development issues. They utilize iPads and I have no experience with Apple products. Now, today a teacher came to me asking if I could block access to the printers from the kids iPads. They are printing some rather unfortunate things, and from a brief googling, I couldn't seem to find any option to do so, apart from setting up a seperate network (not a possibility (the teachers use iPads as well, and they need to be able to print. All tablets are connected to the same network.)) Is there a way to do it from the iPad, or do I have to setup passwords on the printers?

I’m on tech support duty at the in-laws over Christmas, but this one has me stumped, any help appreciated. They have an “HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M176n” which has been working fine for many years. Recently though AirPrint from phones has stopped working, or rather that lines are appearing on prints. See this example, cropped somewhat heavily to remove living people, but there are maybe 30-40 of these lines across a normal print: A crop of a print showing the lines. Printing from macOS 10.15 via AirPrint, or from Windows machines still works perfectly, so it can’t be toner or the imaging drum (although both are reporting that they need to be replaced in the near future…). I’ve tried updating the firmware to the latest available (it went up from a 2013xx version to a 2016xx version) with no luck, and I’ve been through all the settings but there’s no obvious things to try: the AirPrint implementation is pretty opaque. So is this an iOS 13 incompatibility that’s been introduced? The backup is to copy the images over to the computer before trying to print them which is acceptable, but not great if the printer advertises AirPrint.

A question on behalf of my Swiss neighbour She has a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running Sierra, and a Canon 7550 printer (MG7500 series). - WiFi router is configured on Macbook (browsing works fine). - The printer (Canon 7550) is configured on the MacBook, with the correct print driver version installed and a little green circle showing beside it's name (suggesting the installation is good). - The printer IP address is configured (listed) on the WiFi router. Nevertheless, every time a print job is started, we get the message: in German: "Drucken - Der Drucker reagiert nicht" (English equivalent: "Print: The printer is not responding"). Despite a superficially correct end-to-end configuration, the Mac doesn't seem to "see" the Canon 7550. It also fails to "see" the printer using a direct USB cable connection, and using Airprint. Strange is that my neighbour went to a friend with her MacBook, and could print to her neighbour's Canon printer with no problem. We've deleted and (in all but results) correctly reconfigured everything quite a few times - to no effect. Would be grateful for a couple of further troubleshooting suggestions or tweaks. Tks

How is Mac gathering printer information? What is this whole process of adding a printer in details? Is there any tutorial/article that can help? I have tried google search, could not find something of good interest yet. I want to debug a situation where Mac is choosing driver for a printer sometime and sometimes it does not (for the same printer). Expected driver to see there is AirPrint. The printer is being added from a print server. So, want to have a look at what is happening in the background.
