I need to prevent my 13" 2016 MacBook Pro from sleeping. I'm using the Sonnet Echo Express III-D and when the Mac sleeps, all cards in the devices are disconnected and won't come back until the Mac is restarted or Thunderbolt 3 cable is removed and reconnected. I have a case open with Sonnet, but until then, I don't want my Mac to sleep.
The Mac is running High Sierra and there appears to be no setting in Energy Saver that keeps the Mac from going to sleep while on the Power Adapter, other than this:
In earlier versions of macOS, there used to be a second slider that allowed you to set when the Mac sleeps, in addition to controlling the display.
Now, no matter what, my Mac will sleep whenever it wants, with no apparent way of controlling this.
I have tried Amphetamine but it appears the way this works is, when the computer tries to go to sleep, it interrupts it and keeps it awake. This won't work for me, since that's long enough for the cards in the Sonnet to all get disconnected.
How can I prevent my Mac from sleeping?

In my case, WhatsApp is "37.34". Since we're told "lower is better", it can be inferred that it is using a *lot* of energy relative to other applications - but 37.34 *what* exactly? (is it a % of total power use, an absolute measure in some electrical metric, or something else?)

I'm trying to collect information on power usage of our Apple (for now macOS only) devices. I came across some good posts and was already able to read out the
object via
. That already would help me to determine if it is a laptop or a desktop model. But is is actually pretty hard to get more detailed information around the actual power drain. I'm less interested if a device runs on battery but actually more on the consumption if it is connected to a charger. I found the child object of
which contains a lot of interesting information but have no real clue how to interpret the data (reformatted for better readability).
$ /usr/sbin/ioreg -rc AppleSmartBattery | grep PowerTelemetryData
"PowerTelemetryData" = {
"WallEnergyEstimate"=2305,
"AccumulatedSystemPowerIn"=28547763,
"AdapterEfficiencyLossAccum ulatorCount"=3586,
"AccumulatedWallEnergyEstimate"=9196925,
"SystemInputVoltage"=12145,
"SystemPowerInAccumulatorCount"=3586,
"SystemEnergyConsumed"=1987,
"SystemPowerIn"=7156,
"SystemLoad"=7576,
"PowerTelemetryErrorCount"=0,
"AccumulatedSystemLoad"=28544320,
"SystemLoadAccumulatorCount"=3587,
"AccumulatedSystemEnergyConsumed"=7928273,
"AdapterEfficiencyLoss"=318,
"SystemInputCurrent"=588,
"AccumulatedAdapterEfficiencyLoss"=1268652
}
From what I can see there is already some items which are pretty interesting, e.g. WallEnergyEstimate
, AccumulatedWallEnergyEstimate
or SystemEnergyConsumed
. But have no clue in what unit of measure these read outs actually are and couldn't find any (even non-official) documentation. Is there anyone that can help?

I recently (two days ago) updated to El Capitan on my work machine (15" MBP, Mid 2015, 2.5 GHz Core i7, 16GB ram, R9 M370X, 500GB SSD) and ever since then, Spotlight has been draining my battery and causing the fans to spin like it's about to take off from my desk. My battery life has gone from about 6-7 projected hours pre-update to only 3 until it's completely drained.
Here's a picture of Activity Monitor:
" class="img-fluid rounded" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto; margin: 10px 0;" loading="lazy">
and CPU:
I initially thought that Spotlight was simply indexing and using high amounts of energy in the process, but 1. it shouldn't be indexing for almost three full days (I don't have very much data stored on the disk at all) 2. the process for indexing is usually called 'mdutil' rather than the actual 'Spotlight' process and 3. Spotlight would usually display a progress bar when it's actually indexing.
I've rebooted multiple times, tried force quitting the Spotlight process (but it just turns back on and uses the same energy) and tried turning mdutil on and off and forcing reindexing (to no effect, most likely because indexing is not the root issue?).
Does anyone know what might be causing this issue?
I updated to El Capitan on my personal Mac way back when it first came out last fall and I never had this issue. Nor do any of the coworkers I've talked to now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to calculate energy consumption. That's why I have used the following program, unfortunately it gave errors.
**MWE:**
#need python3.7 to run this
from math import *
import time # time module is used to delay your program for a bit so that you can get a reading, that is not zero
#but delay will/might give you more noise from the system
import pyRAPL
a=1
pyRAPL.setup()
measure= pyRAPL.Measurement('bar')
measure.begin() #to begin a measurement
for i in range (100):
a=a*(i+1)
print (a)
time.sleep(0.001) #this time delay (in seconds) is the approximate minimum time of which it gives a reading, any duration lesser #than this might yield '0' energy consumption
measure.end() #to end the measurement
val =measure.result #output the result by the following
print (val)
#the above result will contain 5 values
#access one by one with the following syntax
print ('label= ',val.label)
print ('timestamp= ', val.timestamp) #it gives the exact time of initialisation of measurement, (in epoch) needs to be converted to date and time format
print ('duration= ', val.duration) #gives the duration of program running between begin() and end()
print ('energy consumed by CPU= ', val.pkg) #value of energy consumption by the CPU in micro Joules <==== We need this
print ('dram value = ',val.dram) #value of RAM energy consumption (in seconds) <--- needs to be converted, not so sure how
**Errors result:**
How can I fix this problem?

My guess is take the full charge capacity (3582). Also divide the mV (milli volts?) by 1000 to get volts, then use a calculator or [conversion table](https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/conversions/common/watts-amps.php) . But I'm not exactly sure what to do next?

I've read practically every question and answer I can find that mention the pmset command, after I discovered it was behind the most frustrating thing about my new MacBook Pro.
I say MY MacBook Pro, it actually belongs to my employer - that may have a bearing later on, I'll come back to that.
I've used Macs for 20 years, and I've owned three Powerbooks/MacBooks in that time. I'm used to just closing the lid (power lead plugged in or not) and coming back to it and just resuming what I was doing.
This new machine keeps shutting down when it's in sleep mode. I open the lid and get the big white apple log on a black background and have to log in and wait while it attempts to restore my windows.
Sure, Apple have made a good fist of getting applications back up and running again, but many of the applications I use clearly don't get a chance to save their state before the computer turns itself off. They go back to the state they were in the last time the app was launched, not the last time it was being used. I have to re-open projects, move windows back where they were, restore documents that have emergency backups etc.
I just want the old sleep routine back. I've used pmset to turn hibernate mode to 0, which is what everyone says to do but it doesn't work. It's obviously to do with the EU energy saving law, so I figured it might be the standbydelay setting so I've turned that off too. I've messed about with all the settings, turning everything off to just get the thing to sleep normally and that's whether it's plugged in, or on battery. I'm prepared to take the modest hit on battery life. I'm on battery at the moment and here are my current settings:
standbydelay 0
standby 0
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
powernap 0
gpuswitch 2
disksleep 3600
sleep 5
autopoweroffdelay 0
hibernatemode 0
autopoweroff 0
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 5
tcpkeepalive 1
acwake 0
lidwake 1
One possible wrinkle I'm vaguely aware of is that FileVault is enabled. Like I said, it's a work computer so I'm not permitted to disable FileVault. I understand this may have some bearing on my options but I'm not sure exactly what.
I have resorted to playing streams overnight with the volume all the way down just to stop me having to start all over again in the morning but that's not really an option when on battery power.
What on Earth do I need to do to get normal sleep operations the like of which I've been used to for a fifth of a century?

I have a MacBookAir3,2 (late 2010) running 10.9.3.
I want to be able to force the machine to immediately go into "hibernation" mode, but it seems impossible.
The usual answer that I have seen is
sudo pmset -a destroyfvkeyonstandby 1 hibernatemode 25
but when I sleep/wake my Mac with those settings, I am _not_ asked for my FileVault password.
Additional Info:
* Power Nap is disabled for Battery and A/C power
* Fast User Switching is disabled
* Preferences » Security & Privacy » General » Require Password is set to “immediately”
I have run sudo pmset -a destroyfvkeyonstandby 1 hibernatemode 25 autopoweroff 1 autopoweroffdelay 14400 standby 1
but note that 'autopoweroff' and 'autopoweroffdelay' are both absent from my pmset
settings:
System-wide power settings:
DestroyFVKeyOnStandby 1
Active Profiles:
Battery Power -1
AC Power -1*
Currently in use:
standbydelay 0
standby 1
womp 1
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
darkwakes 0
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
sleep 180
hibernatemode 25
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 10
acwake 0
lidwake 1
Putting the computer to sleep, either by closing the lid or sudo shutdown -s now
and then waking it back up within a minutes or two does not require me to enter my FileVault password, just my regular account password.
Is there a way for me to _force_ the Mac to hibernate?
