I'm using an old iMac G3, running Mac OS 10.3.9 Panther, for research purposes. My concern is not security - I don't put sensitive information on this machine, nor do I mind if the integrity of the Operating System is compromised. I just want to be able to connect to the internet for benchmarking purposes. I am aware that the specs of this machine are too low to run most websites. As you're probably aware, the SSL security protocols on this version of Mac OS X are out of date enough to prevent me from visiting anything aside from Google. One step I've taken care of is following the directions from https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/422332/how-do-i-update-my-root-certificates-on-an-older-version-of-mac-os-e-g-el-capi : > Some operating systems hold onto the expired R3 > DST Root CA X3 chain even if your server is no longer using it. Try a restart of the affected client device. > > For older macOS not updated by Apple: > > Download the ISRG Root X1 certificate file from http://x1.i.lencr.org/ > Open the Keychain Access app and drag that file into the System folder > of that app. Find the ISRG Root X1 certificate in System and double > click on it, open the Trust menu and change "Use System Defaults" to > "Always Trust", then close that and enter your password to confirm the > change (if prompted). I seem to be able to connect to Google via HTTPS, which is a step up, but sites like Wikipedia still prevent me from accessing them for security reasons. What else could I try doing in order to get this computer on the internet (for better or worse)?

I have a PowerMac G4 (AGP) with a working copy of Mac OS 9.2, and a corrupted copy of OS X 10.3. I would like to either reinstall Panther, or upgrade to Tiger. The catch is that for several reasons I am unable to use the CD drive to perform this installation, and am thusly relegated to using USB (I have no FireWire drives or other PPC Macs with which to perform a Target Mode install.). So my question is: how would one make a bootable Mac OS X 10.3/10.4 USB install disk(s) using self-made rips of the CDs? In the past I have successfully installed Mac OS 9.2 via USB on this machine, however 10.3 always begins the boot process, only to hang on the "Still waiting for root" screen (White background, grey prohibitive logo), and 10.4 always gets as far as the Apple boot logo, only to hang there and stop accessing the USB drive all together. Any help is appreciated, but please skip the generic "Are you sure it's a genuine CD?" and "Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM/SMC". Yes I am sure they're genuine, and I have already tried that. I am almost certain the problem is with the way I am making the installer (ripping ISO via Disk Utility, and burning to USB via dcfldd or dd). ***UPDATE: 01/04/2019*** _To those reading this out of curiosity or to perform the process yourselves, I found that my Tiger CD was corrupted, thus was the image as well, which explains why it was unable to read part way through the boot process. As for the Panther CD I never did figure out why it wouldn't boot, however I did discover the reason the Panther **USB** hung at the "Still waiting for root" screen is because the USB drive had insufficient power to act as a boot drive when plugged into the Mac's USB ports. I ended up buying a Leopard CD, making a USB installer out of it, and using an externally powered USB hub to circumvent this lacking power draw. I am happy to say the G4 is now chugging along on a copy of 10.5.8, albeit a bit slowly and with animations disabled._

OS X 10.3.9 Update available?
I just found my old iBook G4, but I only have the installation-cd for OS X 10.3 and I can't find any downloads on the official Apple download pages. Is there some way I still can get the update? Update: I overlooked the "Load" button Update2: Actually my iBook is to old to show the Loadbutton

What was the name of the typeface used on the Mac OS 9/OS X Cheeta/Jaguar packaging?

Many years ago I was bequeathed an eMac. I believe it's a 1 GHz G4. It's been sitting around doing nothing for a long time, but now I need to install realMYST Mac edition, from 2002, and it's my best bet. I was given three OS X install discs with the eMac: A 10.0 disc, an eMac Software Restore disc (that says it has Panther on it), and also a set of Panther upgrade discs. Unfortunately, the eMac refuses to boot from either the 10.0 disc or the Restore disc. It *will* boot from the Panther Upgrade disc, but I can't install it because the hard drive is blank and doesn't have a previous version of OS X on it! Is there some file on the disc I could delete, some plist I could change or something, to make this installer not do the upgrade check? Or does anyone have any ideas on how to get it to boot from the restore disc? **EDIT** to clarify: The discs that the eMac won't boot from are in perfect condition and entirely readable by other Macs; the eMac simply won't boot from them. But it boots perfectly every single time from the Panther Upgrade disc. And the Panther Upgrade disc is way more scratched up (to the naked eye, anyway) than the others. Apparently this eMac shipped with OS X 10.3 Panther. The restore discs claim to have Panther on them. But the eMac won't boot from the restore disc, even though it boots from the Panther Upgrade disc.

A couple I know have two computers I'm supporting - one is a iMac which I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard (10.6) to Yosemite (10.10). The printer is attached to this machine. The other computer, unfortunately, is a 450MHz [Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Mac_G4) running the last version of Panther (10.3.9). Surprisingly, the 14-year-old computer still works and is actively being used (primarily for [AppleWorks](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleWorks#AppleWorks.2FClarisWorks_.28Macintosh.2FWindows_versions.2C_1991.E2.80.932004.29) documents, which is another "ugh"). Before the iMac was upgraded, I had done *something* to it which let the Power Mac see the shared printer. I suspect it had to do with [CUPS](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUPS) , but I could be wrong. Ever since the upgrade to Yosemite, the Power Mac has been unable to print, and I can't seem to recreate the old setup. My question resumed in one sentence is: **How do I share a printer *from* a Mac running Yosemite *to* one running Panther, so that the Panther one can print?**

Too many major websites are using features that in-effect are "walking away from" my old OS 10.3.9 and Firefox 2. (That is, my favorite browser, and its available plugins and extensions, are starting to no longer render some common websites properly, or at all.) I would like to experiment with alternative browsers but do not know which ones have archived "antique" versions that can be downloaded and installed on such an old Mac. Any advice (apart from "Upgrade to 10.4...")? My machine is a PowerPC "iMac" -- the version with the white half-sphere base and the moderately thick flat-screen on a "stalk" -- sort of like the movie "Wall-E" but with a rounded body.
