I use Hangouts to chat with friends. As I don't want to keep history, I set it to be turned off. So whenever I chat, in the input line I see a constant message of "History is turned off". However, when I open Hangouts again, I can see messages that were sent days ago. A simple question: how can I see older messages with history disabled?

I tried to text a person in Hangouts whose profile icon appears like the image below. There is some peculiar info related to this. When I tried to text that person, it showed 'Failed to send... Tap to retry'. I couldn't send any messages. I could see their last seen but with this thumbnail only. Does it mean the person has deleted the Hangouts account or signed out?

Another *"I don't quite understand what is going on in Google Hangouts"* type of question.... So - when I view Hangouts via my Android app (running under KitKat), my girlfriend's status is **ALWAYS** shown as online (green speech bubble next to her picture), **even when she is not online**. Conversely, if *at the same time* I log into my GMail account, her status is shown as **NOT online** (no green line under her name). How can she be both online and offline!!? What the hell is going on here?! Has anyone else had this issue?

i sent a picture using Hangouts. I don't want the picture in the conversation thread. how do i delete just that picture, but leave all the other texts in the thread?

I was using my Hotmail account for a very long time for hangouts and other Google services. Today I create a Gmail account on top of my existing Hotmail Google services. This is supposed to mean that the Google email is now the primary way to access all of that information. I did it and as soon as I did that, I couldn't log into Hangouts on my Nexus 5. Can someone please help me out? I can still receive SMS with the app, just not hangout messages. I can't use hangouts on gmail.com or other google web sites either. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the hangouts app. Everything is up to date. I have factory reset my phone and logged in with my Google email. Still doesn't work. I'm starting to believe it's something on the Google side of things and not anything to do with my phone.

I am using Google Chat from GMail on Samsung Galaxy S22, Android 13. Some words like "see", "zoo", "walmart", and "in a" are linked randomly. When I tap it, I can search for the word(s) or click map which actually doesn't do anything as it's not a place. I don't see any recently added apps that might be doing this. I have also restarted the phone as well as wiped the cache and data for GMail to attempt to fix it. The only thing I can think of is the update I performed yesterday as I don't remember seeing this happen prior to that. How to fix it?

I'm using a service to report SMS spam via text messages. First step is to forward the text message, and the second step is to send a text message containing the phone number of the spammer. I achieve the first step by doing a long press on the message itself, then I have a forward menu. But I can't find a reasonable way to do the second step. I can see the phone number in various places, but never in a selectable text field. So I have to create a new contact for the spammer, give him a name, tap the phone number text field, copy, and go back a few steps to create a new text message, then paste the previously copied phone number. Is there a faster way to do this ?

I'm getting a "cannot connect to the server" error when I try to use Hangouts on my phone. Every other Google app works. SMS works but not Hangouts messages. All my other devices work with Hangouts messages.

I've just signed up to Google Hangouts but am using a shared phone, as my friend already has an account and is logged in I don't know how to add an additional gmail address to switch accounts within the app...is this possible? If so how can I do it? Any other way I can access my Google Hangout on the phone if not?

In Hangouts 3.1.89134953 I get a "Sending as Unknown number" message at the top of my texts. I googled for this message and found nothing. What does this message mean?

Although I have been a long-time user of Google Voice and Hangouts, I only recently got my first Android tablet (WiFi only, no cellular). The way the first two interact with the tablet is puzzling and frustrating: - As far as I can tell, Hangouts is the tool that Google wants us to use for Google Voice SMS messages. - It seems that recently Google removed SMS support from Hangouts except for Google Voice SMS that is still supported, and provided a way to choose what app to use as the main SMS app. - With Hangouts installed, everything seems to work, but I get constantly spammed by a Hangouts notification saying that SMS is no longer supported. I have found no way to silence this notification unless I disable all Hangouts notifications, which would make me miss other Hangouts IMs. - In the attempt to silence the SMS is no longer supported spam notifications, I tried to install other SMS apps, but since my tablet is WiFi only, I am unable to install them. - I only found one SMS app that would install without the cellular hardware (I think called Messenger) and it spammed me with so many advertising notifications that I had to uninstall it, the cure was worse than the illness. How to silence the Hangouts' "SMS is no longer supported" notification? Otherwise, how to install another SMS app on a WiFi-only tablet that stays nice and silent (which is ideal as I probably will never use it, I would only install it to silence the Hangouts notification)?

I have a Nexus 5 with Kitkat 4.4.2 and have the Hangouts app as the SMS app. My friend has an Samsung Galaxy S Relay and also uses Hangouts app as SMS app. Whenever we send SMS to each other with emoticons, emoticons are not converted, instead we just see the text code for it. I'm baffled by this since we're using the same app for texting. I'd understand if it was like from an iPhone to Android, or something like that. Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?

My close relative have a phone which have both Hangouts and Chat installed. Chat does not have integrated Voice and Video call function. IMO, Chat is significantly inferior than Hangouts. So I still prefer Hangouts over Chat to communicate. It used to be a blue banner that says "Hangouts is being replaced by Google Chat". Today, when trying to use Hangouts, it just say that Use Chat in Gmail. This is even after uninstalling Chat and reinstalling Hangouts from Play Store. There seems to be no way out of it. For the time being, it can still receive calls. But since I have no way to bypass that "Use Chat in Gmail" splash screen, I cannot do hangouts. Am I being force migrated? Is there a way to rollback?

Does sending images on Google Hangouts (Android application) count towards my Google account storage space? I have a basic compatibility problem with emoji: the emoji available on one Android device (Android 8.1) do not match those available on a second (Android 6.0?) in applications including the SMS messaging application or Google Hangouts. Some emoji show up as blank boxes on the receiving end. Is there a way to update the older Android device to include newer emoji? Assume that the messaging applications such as Google Hangouts have the latest updates for their respective platforms and that the receiving device is a normal end user device that is not rooted.

I'm using Google Voice to send text messages to someone. I've chosen to send the messages through Hangouts. The messages are being sent successfully and the recipient gets them but they don't show up in the chat log in hangouts. However, they are showing up in the stock Messages app. Shouldn't the messages be listed in both apps?

I am using Google Hangouts old version v10 for SMS because its seems no other SMS app does support merging SMS threads by contact (I have tested all top SMS apps). I have disabled playmaket auto-updates. I wonder is there a way to get rid of nagging "Upgrade Required" screen? Hangouts show it on the every launch. I have tried block this app from internet access - no luck. It does require internet for initial login. After that even with LightingWall(xposed module) or Flight profile 'Upgrade now' persist forever. May be some settings can be altered directly? Or apk may be hacked somehow? I still can launch app indirect although; it is registered as SMS app so I can launch Hangouts SMS threads from say drupe. UPDATE: Upgrading Hangouts to latest version and using XHangounts does not return proper merging of SMS.

Recently, Google released a fairly major update to Hangouts, an instant messaging app as well as an alternate SMS client. I have a phone (model is irrelevant) and a Nexus 10. I updated to the latest hangouts on both devices. On the phone, it works great. I have tried going to stock android 5.1.1, wiping cache, user data and dalvik cache all to no avail. **Does anyone have a fix to this problem? If not, are there any good Google Voice clients?**

How can I make a call to an SIP address (e.g. sip:613@fwd.pulver.com) from Google Voice number? Does Google Hangout support calls to SIP addresses? Can an SIP address call my Google Voice number? Thanks.
