ROM Manager - What Is It's Purpose?

I just finished rooting my phone (Moto Droid) for the first time using the z4root application. It worked great (one-click, no computer involved). However, before I start messing with my phone, I wanted to make a backup of my phone so, in case I really screw up royally, I can easily recover back to a certain point (AKA - I don't want to brick my phone). As I was reading, I started hearing about Nandroid backups. However, it seems as though you need to install some sort of ROM in order for it to happen. I checked into that and heard about ROM Manager. Apparently some of the mods that come with the ROM Manager are able to setup the Nandroid backup. I have a couple questions first, however. 1. I noticed ROM Manager needs a lot of access to your contacts, accounts, etc. Is that because it's doing a full backup, or something else nefarious? (Yeah, I'm suspicious.) 2. Is there an easier way to back-up? I don't really care about a new ROM (such as CynogenMod). I just wanted root access for a couple, very specific reasons. 3. If Nandroid is the only good/correct way to backup a phone, am I going down the right path/process? Anything I should look into before I keep going (such as Titanium Backup )? Thanks for any help you can provide.

First, I pull **app fodder**, **priv-app folder** and **framework folder** from system folder in my phone using adb command: adb pull /system/app app/ adb pull /system/priv-app/ priv-app/ adb pull /system/framework framework/ And then i create a folder name system to contains the three folders i pulled from my phone(app fodder, priv-app folder and framework folder). After that i used LBD 2.5 by JoelDroid to deodex it. After deodex successful i tried to push it back into my system folder. So i copy it into my SDcard and use root explorer to move it into system folder. But the problem is that, it always fail. I have granted root permission already but it still fail to move. So i try to use other app like ES Explorer. But it still fail. It show the message that there was not enough memory. So i delete priv-app folder in system and copy from my sd card back. But it still fail. I got some questions here. 1. If i can push it back to my system folder, does it mean my phone deodex? 2. Does it mean i deodex my rom, if i can push it back? 3. How can i push it back? Please help.! I wanted to install xposed and also want to learn about it too. Thank everyone. :)

Or can I skip it because I already added it last time?

I want to try the CyanogenMod9 Alpha builds for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide [MT4GS/Doubleshot] and all the instructions say I need S-OFF. The problem is that I have HBOOT 1.55 so software solutions like Revolutionary do not work and I am left with the JuopunutBear wire trick. I am not up for that so I will stay S-ON for now. Then, I found ROM Manager that claims to easily install custom ROMs easily, but I can not find if ROM Manager requires S-OFF for HTC devices. Does anyone know if I can install custom ROMs through ROM Manager with S-ON?

I'm trying to use ROM Manager app to backup the current ROM of my Xperia Z but it seems that cannot be done without unlocking the bootloader/ installing ClockWorkMod Recovery. Is there any alternative for me to backup current ROM and flash another ROM without having to mess with bootloader or ClockWordMod Recovery? Note that my device is already rooted using this method . According to Sony's website , messing with the bootloader is likely to void warranty which defeats my purpose and so all my attempts to backup the stock ROM here.

So I understand the first thing I need to do with my phone, after rooting, is to back everything up. But I was confused about 3 of the apparently popular tools used for this. For example, is Nandroid an application I run on a computer connected to the Android device, or on the device itself? I understand ClockworkMod is a "custom recovery". What does that mean? Why do I need it? What does it mean to "flash" it? Asides from browsing and installing new ROMs, how does ROM manager interact with the other two? Does it include them both, so I just need to download it from the market and be done with it? I will appreciate any answer that can sort out the differences, with emphasis on what I, as an end-user, actually need to do, and whether there is any risk on those actions.

I want to put a custom ROM on my LG G2. I have successfully applied root permissions using IORoot v25. However I am unable to create a backup of the stock ROM. I have tried several ways using the ROM Manager app (v5.5.37): 1. Go to ROM Manager > Recovery Setup > [Install or Update] ClockwordModrecovery. Then tap Reboot into Recovery. The phone reboots into the recovery menu, but no options to back up are listed. (So I choose option to reboot). 2. With CWM Recovery still set, I tap "Backup Current ROM" (underneath it says the backup directory will be /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup. Again, it boots into the recovery menu without any backup options so I select reboot. Yet nothing appears in the /mnt/shell directory. 3. Configure ROM Manager to use TWRP recovery. Then in ROM Manager, tap option to go to recovery mode. Yet again, no backup options are listed, so yet again I choose option to reboot. 4. With TWRP Recovery still set, I tap "Backup Current ROM" (underneath it says the backup directory will be /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/0225b99d9a5159f0. Surprise surprise, no backup options, and no directory /sdcard/TWRP. What am I doing wrong? From what I understand, what I am seeing is the "stock" recovery [program/menu], and neither the TWRP nor the CWM recovery menus are showing. Perhaps they're failing to install, or failing to be run or something? The logs in the app SuperSU which handles root requests do not give any hints - I can find no mention of CWM or TWRP recovery.

I am using rooted LG P500 running stock 2.3.3. Recently I partitioned my SD card using ROMManager in to three partitions (swap, ext and usb storage). I checked with Mini Partition Tool and understood that the sd-ext type is ext3. Link2SD created mount script and linked apps perfectly, releasing loads of space in memory. To try an unofficial CM10 ROM, I backed up using ROMManager (NAndroid) and installed the unofficial CM10 ROM. While using CM10, I wiped sd-ext partition and linked few apps with belief that backup is done. Since I was unhappy with the CM10 ROM I decided to restore the backup and while doing so only I observed that my sd-ext partition contents were not backed up. Thinking that I might not have backed up properly, I tried again to back up in restored backup of stock 2.3.3 and observed a message: > "Could not mount sd-ext. sd-ext backup may not be supported on this device. Skipping backup of sd-ext" Had if I had noticed this message, I would not have installed the CM10 ROM at all. **Question:** How can I make ROMManager to backup sd-ext partitions as well? I guess just because it was unable to mount, it just skipped sd-ext backup. When Link2SD was able to mount, what is stopping ROMManager to mount it and how can I fix it? Info: 1. I tried this with ClockworkMod Recovery version 5.0.2.7 and ROMManager version is 5.0.2.1 2. I have seen the question "Ext4 partition clockworkmod recovery backup " and this question differs because the partition used is ext3 and was created by ROMMananger itself. **Update:** 1. I have seen this modaco forum thread and it just only helped me to come to a assumption that my present recovery version 5.0.2.7 does not support it. I will be glad to confirm it either from any authoritative source or burst the myth if some other user successfully backed up (either with 5.0.2.7) sd-ext. 2. When I attempted to use "mount and storage -> mount /sd-ext" option in CWM recovery console, I just get "Error mounting /sd-ext!" message.

But when it rebooted, it froze at the second LG logo and won't go anywhere. Booting into recovery mode did nothing. It took many tries to get the LG Optimus unbricking tool to recognize my phone, but I finally got Clockworkmod Recovery to install on it. Now when I boot into recovery mode, nothing works because it can't mount the SD Card. My next attempt was to flash stock ROM back to it, but I can no longer get the tool to recognize my phone. Have I totally bricked my phone?

Currently I am trying to upgrade my Android OS from 2.3.3 to Cyanogenmod 9 not with "Odin" but via the bootloader and SD-card. Now I had a problem with "Signature verification failed" described here which is highly likely due to the fact that I failed to install a custom bootloader. Now as it is mentioned everywhere **as a pre-requisite**, I want to install "ClockworkMod Recovery", but I cannot find it anywhere! More so in articles around the www from bloggers and journalists (who actually never tried what they wrote about) it is assumed that you already have installed CWM. It seems to be needed also for other ROM's for the **EU Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"inch (GT-P1000)**, not only the one that I want to install. The actual problem is: When I try to install CWM **with ROM Manager** (5.0.0.6) **it *only* shows** the **two** models "Samsung Epic4G" and "Samsung GalaxyS i9000" in the list and not my model (Galaxy Tab EU) or any other model. When I researched I only found **outdated** YouTube videos and XDA-developer threads that don't provide a link to a newer / the most current solution. Most of all, **I had a hard time coming up with *any* Google search results that provide a *current* solution** for my issue. I am willing to try anything to get CWM up and running, as long as the process is outlined somewhere more or less understandable. Finally: I am aware that I void the warranty I never had. I did win my Galaxy Tab, thus never paid for it and never got a receipt and now live in another country anyways.

Problem is, when I reboot into recovery, I still see the stock Samsung boot loader. I think this is the root cause that is preventing me from being able to install CyanogenMod. Tried installing it manually as well through [here](http://theblogoftechnology.wordpress.com/2013/06/21/install-clockworkmod-recovery-without-rom-manager/) , but didn't do anything. Any ideas? I've scoured most threads on multiple message boards and still haven't figured out what the issue is.

One of the older versions of Rom Manager I used to use did this, but more recently my backups, as listed by Rom Manager, seem to be listed in whichever order they please. This is quite annoying when I keep a lot of backups and they are all named only by ROM, date, and time. Is there a way to sort them alphabetically and/or by date? I'm using a Motorola Droid X (shadow). I switch between MIUI (Feb. 2012, GB 2.3.7) and CM9 (July 2012, ICS 4.0.4). Using the latest Rom Manager from the Play store, which appears to be 5.5.2.8. Thanks for any suggestions. EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the Rom Manager installation on CM9 wasn't actually up to date, and apparently my backups were not all named consistently. It seems that Rom Manager uses the format: YYYY-MM-DD-HH.nn.ss while CWM Recovery uses the format: YYYY-MM-DD.HH.nn.ss which is why they didn't seem to sort correctly. Updating and making the names consistent solved the issue.

So I've just rooted my Motorola Droid (I've done this before on the same device, but with a different method back on 2.0.1). I am on 2.2.2. The root went successfully, Super User app was present, etc. I then installed ROM Manager and http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ from my SD card. After that, my phone would boot, then run through the boot animation, freeze, then start the boot animation over again, and repeat. I made a backup through ROM Manager before the install, and have restored it. From what I could tell, that went fine, but now I'm stuck in ClockwordMod Recovery each time I try to reboot my device. It boots once, showing the Motorola logo, then shuts off, then boots again showing the logo, then goes directly into ClockworkMod, without me holding x or anything special. Can I get out of this or am I bricked? And troubleshooting suggestions?
