This questions pertains specifically the GT-i9100 version (not GT-i9100G nor GT-i9100T, et cetera), which currently has no entry under the rooting index .
I am particularly looking for a rooting method which does not wipe the data on the phone, as [I am hoping to recover data afterwards](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/89133/data-recovery-on-boot-looped-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-gt-i9100) . I have an 8GB external SD card.

Data recovery on boot-looped Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100

I have a boot-looped Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100, running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread it came with, unrooted and unmodified (although Optus-branded).
The phone's battery depleted while the phone was running; now, any attempt to boot the phone results in the boot sequence looping indefinitely.
I wish to recover data from this device (before attempting to solve the boot-loop problem later via factory reset or other method).
I read the [
boot-loop
tag information](https://android.stackexchange.com/tags/boot-loop/info) but the instructions have not been helpful for me: I have tried to boot into Safe Mode, but my attempts also trigger the indefinite boot-loop; I wiped the cache via stock recovery but that had no effect; and, the last recommendation was a factory reset which I won't follow until I have recovered the data.
I believe USB Debugging is already enabled. I have an 8GB external SD card and I have Linux Mint 13 as my desktop operating system.
[This answer](https://android.stackexchange.com/a/59044/81471) indicated that it should be possible to root the phone and recover data via the [Android Debug Bridge (ADB)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_software_development#ADB) for a different Samsung Galaxy S version, but I need instructions for the Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100 if this avenue is worth pursuing.
This seems related to [this question](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/71776/samsung-galaxy-2-stuck-at-start-up-can-i-recovery-the-phone-or-at-least-the-dat) but could be a different [variant](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II#Variants) and issue. It's not the same as [this question](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/39316/how-to-regain-control-over-a-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-with-a-boot-loop) because I need to recover data.

On my Samsung Galaxy S2, sometimes all of the icons will disappear from the home screens except for the 4 built in icons (phone, messaging, web, applications). This sometimes happens at startup, and sometimes happens after the phone has been running for a while. It can only be fixed by rebooting the phone, although that is not a guaranteed fix.
More recently I've encountered an additional problem: Sometimes when the icons disappear, the Applications button stops bringing up my applications menu.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have recently found one of my very first Android phones, a Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100), with many fond memories saved onto it.
Now, I can not access the phone's data anymore since I entered my pattern wrong too many times back in the day.
Now, even if I enter my current Google credentials for the account I used during those times, the phone doesn't want to acknowledge that. I have double-checked several times that the password I entered was correct.
Since I don't seem to be able to access my phone via normal means, I was curious if there is a way to recover my data another way. I don't mind if the phone becomes unusable afterward as well.
I have only very limited knowledge of Android and all its abilities, but I seem to remember reading about these older phone's storage being easier to access than newer ones.
Is there a way to recover my data?
Even any idea why my phone asks me for my Google login but doesn't accept it would be helpful.
I would really appreciate any help since those are a lot of memories that would be lost forever.

How to remove Samsung native email app from Galaxy S2?

Now, however, I have taken the SIM out of it to put it in my new phone. The original SIM (O2) was PAYG, which changed to SIM only contract and that was still the case when I changed to Virgin. Now, when I put the old (O2) SIM back into the phone, it says
Not Registered on Network
. I've tried a factory reset and messing with the APN settings but nothing seems to work. I'm at my whit's end. Please help.

I'm trying to switch from an iPhone 3GS to a Galaxy SII and got multiple questions. This one concerns migrating text messages (SMS).
I've found quite some articles, basically, they fall into two categories:
1. Getting the text message SQLite database from the iTunes backup and exporting stuff manually to CSV files.
2. Importing the SQLite database directly with tools.
Most pages link to this article .
Problem:
Apparently, this only works in iOS < 5.0 or iTunes < 10, don't know. With newer backups, the SQLite database can not be opened anymore, and the Android tools mentioned do not work anymore.
So I'm looking for any other suggestions on how to correctly migrate the text messages to Android.
Note:
I'm aware that maybe this is more an iPhone question than an Android. Nevertheless, I hope to find someone here who faced the same problems. This is exactly the reason why I'm migrating in the first place.

I have a lot of images I want to send from my phone to an email. I had in the past some error messages about emails being too big, so this time I sent in most emails 3 pics, which all queued in the
outbox
, and about 3 emails got through after a while. But now I have more than a day 20 emails in the outbox
and it seems that nothing is happening. So my questions are:
1. Whats going wrong?
2. Is there anything I can do? (beside sending via BT to a computer, and email from there)
I have tried:
* Leaving the phone with open Wi-Fi connection all night
* Rebooting the phone (and leave another night with Wi-Fi)
* Checked at google's documentation and found out that they're limit is 25 MB per mail
Random info that might be relevant:
1. All mails are going to the same person with the same subject, and no body - gmail could be blocking them because a misuse is suspected.
2. I can surf the web as usual through the browser. No connection problems.
3. Each image is about 3MB, so each mail has a total of 9 MB.
4. There is exactly one email that has 4 images in it - not the first in the list.
5. First email in the list has only 2 images (both smaller that 2.9 MB)
6. I get notified about new emails I get.

I have the latest version of Kies, OS X, and a Samsung Galaxy s2 with CM10 on it.
It is set to MTP with USB debugging off (if it's on USB storage rather than MTP, Kies crashes).
I tried playing with many parameters but none of them seem to work - when I plug in my Galaxy, Kies shows "connecting" and nothing happens.. (the program itself is not stuck).
Someone suggested launching phone util (7284) and changing the PDA/modem stuff, but it doesn't launch on my phone, I guess it's because of my CM10.
I also tried rebooting the phone/Mac several times.
What else can I do?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 that my uncle brought for me from Korea. This model of the S2, for some reason, has connecting issues through USB. The computer does not detect it at all!
I tried connecting it in my Ubuntu OS, and also on a cousin's Windows 8, still no luck at all.
I wish to backup the phone first, it is not rooted, so I need to follow what was said here. And after the backup I have to change its ROM to i9100 from the current m250s, so I can use it properly.
But for all that to happen, it needs be connected to the PC first.
It has ICS 4.0.4.
**Additional information collected from the comments:**
This is what I get when the phone is not connected:
$ sudo lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
And this is what I get after connecting through the download mode of the phone:
$ sudo lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Which is no change at all. The phone is not even detected there! I also tried different cables, but the situation stays unchanged.

I was wondering if there is a way to enter a **"space"** character on the keypad in the keypad tab in the Phone app.
For example, I have 3 different "Mike" contacts:
Mike Smith
Mike Jones
Mike Rothe
In the keypad, when I type "6453" (mike), it then shows the first contact "Mike Smith", and gives me the option to press the "3" button next to "Mike Smith" to see my other contacts with "Mike" as the first name.
I would like to be able to press "6453" and then a **"space"** character, and then "5" ( J ), so it narrows it down to "Mike Jones", instead of making me go through the "Mike"'s to find "Mike Jones"
I can't figure out how to punch in a **"space"** though. Is it possible?
If not, I would be willing to download a better "Phone" app than the 4.1.2 stock phone app, if that would help.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100, currently running Android 4.0.3 XWLP7, rooted. My problems however started even before rooting the phone.
The problem is that whenever I try to call someone, there is about a 20% chance that the phone will freeze, sometimes for over a minute(!), without performing any action. I can hide the Phone application by pressing the home button, but the app itself is frozen and unresponsive. After some time passes, the call is made, even if I've hidden the Phone app by pressing the home button.
All other apps seem to work without any issues. The phone is otherwise completely usable and no other defects can be observed.
A while ago after googling, I found a thread on xda-developers that recommended clearing the data of "Call settings" from Settings -> Applications -> All. At the time I believed this to solve my problem, but the problem reappeared pretty soon, and I do not believe it to be relevant at all now.
I have tried restoring my phone to factory state, including deleting everything from the phone storage and reinstalling the OS, without any effect on the issue.
Is this a known issue, and if so, are there any remedies?
