MacBook Pro 8,1 (13", i5 2.3Ghz) - when I connect an external screen through a MiniDP -> DVI adapter the Mac detects it (knows it's a Samsung SyncMaster and lets me change its resolution) but doesn't show anything on screen. Even though the Mac thinks that the screen works properly (I can move the cursor out of the Mac's screen), the external monitor's led blinks as there was no signal at all. Changing screen resolution doesn't help. I've browsed many similar questions on the internet, unfortunately most of them suggest upgrading the OS. I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. What should I do?

I have been using a 24" monitor with my macbook pro early 2011 connected via a mini display port to DVI adaptor. I recently received an HP Z30i 30" monitor. When I connect to it with an mini display port to display port adaptor, although it displays at the monitors native 2560x1600 resolution, the mac is scaling the desktop display down so as to leave a 1cm or so black border around the desktop. The mac reports using a resolution of 2560x1600 and the display reports this also. This makes the display blurry as single pixels become sub pixels. The display looks like the same effect as having "under scan" turned on when using an HDMI cable at 1080p. I thought that maybe there was a hardware or display problem, but when I boot off a previous system partition from a different hard-drive using the same OS (10.8.5) release, the monitor set up works perfectly. This proves the OS release, display and the hardware, so I'm thinking that there must be a preferences problem with my current setup. Perhaps the under scan setting is somehow being applied to this display when it's not using HDMI? I've tried deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist, ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.HostNumber.plist and rebooting but no results. The scaling is applied before the login screen and logging in as a different user has the same problem. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts, I've got this nice 30" screen and I can't use it!

Now I have a spare monitor with DVI, HDMI and VGA input amd I'd like to add that as a second external display. Is it possible to connect another external monitor to a USB to HDMI adapter? I guess that would be the cheapest option if it worked? Then there's also Mini DisPlayPort with dual-link DVI. Is that supported by Air Mid 2013? This is all very confusing and different sites seem to give different and conflicting info.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to get my M1 Mac mini (M1, 2020, running 13.2 (22D49) Ventura) working with an older DVI monitor. My current configuration has my primary (4K) monitor hooked up via a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable and it works great. I was using an HDMI-to-HDMI before and that worked great as well. My secondary monitor is an HD display (1920x1080, LG W2240 S LCD monitor) with DVI-D and VGA inputs. I cannot get this display to work properly with the Mac mini. I attempted to use an HDMI-to-DVI adaptor and that results in the image below. messed up display on an HD monitor It's hard to see in the image, but the display seems shifted to the right by about half an inch of where it ought to be. I was previously using this display with an older Mac mini over the HDMI-to-DVI cable and it worked fine. I am currently using the VGA port to connect to a PC and that works as well. I did try switching the HDMI-to-DVI input to the PC and that works. The only case that doesn't seem to work is the Mac mini to the older monitor. Just for kicks I grabbed an HDMI-to-VGA cable and tried that. That made the Mac mini go crazy as it seemed to think that the 4K monitor was both displays, nothing showed up in the HD monitor in that configuration. Interestingly enough, when the monitor wakes from sleep, some of the time it is just displaying random "static." When it is in this state the display doesn't appear shifted, but it doesn't really display anything useful at all. I'm looking for any suggestions or directions for what to try. Addressing comments: > What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? From what I read in > the question, both monitors work fine when you use the digital > connections (HDMI and DVI) but fails when you use the analog (VGA) > with the Mac Studio that’s also driving a 4K monitor. Assuming the > second monitor supports XGA, you’re limited to 1024x768 - barely HD. > Why is necessary to connect the Studio to the VGA port? I am attempting to use my older HD monitor as a secondary monitor to the newer 4K monitor. It does not work with either the HDMI-to-DVI cable or with the the HDMI-to-VGA cable when connected to the M1 mini. I have tried both of these signal paths with other computers and the monitor display works just fine. This monitor is capable of 1920x1080 over VGA and I have used it this way in the past. There is no need to use the VGA port, I would prefer to use DVI, but I figured if DVI didn't work but VGA did I'd still be set. > Studio/mini…just a typo; no difference to the Q. The image shift came > after the “just for kicks…HDMI to VGA…” statement so we can infer it’s > when using this mode unless the OP clarifies. It still makes no sense > to use a 4K and a VGA secondary - the resolutions will be too > different to be effective. The image shift is when using the (preferred) DVI input on the monitor. This is also the configuration in the above picture. I tried the VGA input to see if that would work. It doesn't even get as far as with the DVI port. I consider the pairing of a 4K monitor with a full HD monitor being ineffective to be subjective and it suits my needs just fine.

I have an old laptop, a 2014 MacBook Pro, which I use with an external display connected by an HDMI-to-DVI cable. The trouble comes when I leave the machine connected for a long time and it goes to sleep. (Full sleep, not display sleep.) Sometimes, waking the machine while it's connected to the external display causes the computer to hang; it shows a black screen on the external *and* laptop displays and I can't use it. I have to force-restart the machine to be able to use the computer again. I don't really want to have to keep restarting my computer because of this, so I'd like to prevent all sleep (including display sleep) while the computer is connected to an external display. However, I also use the computer on power adapter without the external display, and on battery. I'd like it to go to sleep normally in those cases. Is there an automated way to make this happen? Note: The machine is running macOS Sierra (10.12), so any solution must run on that OS.

For the past few months I've been plugging into two monitors (HP 1920x1080) via the following connection without issue: MacBook **|** USB-C -> DisplayPort (adapter) **|** DisplayPort (cable) **|** Monitor I recently had to move to a different building at my company that has older monitors (Lenovo Acer 1680x1050) which only have VGA and DVI ports. This is the the new connection that i'm using: One of them is using: MacBook **|** USB-C -> DisplayPort (adapter) **|** DisplayPort -> DVI (adapter) **|** DVI (cable) **|** Monitor And the other is using: MacBook **|** USB-C -> DisplayPort (adapter) **|** DisplayPort -> DVI (cable) **|** Monitor When connected to the Lenovos Acers I get "no signal" and my MacBook does not detect them. I've also confirmed that I can still use the HPs just fine. Something else to mention is that **each monitor is using its own USB-C port** so I'm not using any kind of splitter/hub/etc. It seems like my issue points to either the older Lenovos Acers **or** the DVI connection being incompatible with newer USB-C version (3.1?). Has anyone else had similar issues? Can anyone confirm if one of my guesses might be correct? Thank you for any help and/or insight in advance. macOS Monterey Version: 12.5 (21G72) MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) Processor: 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 Memory: 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB Full connection layout USB-C to DisplayPort (adapter) DisplayPort to DVI (adapter) DVI (cable) DisplayPort to DVI (cable)

I have two HP 24es monitors connected to my MacBook Pro. The input to the monitors are via HDMI. One connects directly to the MacBook Pro via a HDMI cable. The other connects via a HDMI to DVI, DVI to DVI, DVI to DisplayPort, DisplayPort to Henge Docks to MacBook Pro. Now in general the monitors work fine. The problem is after I've locked the laptop and the monitors have gone to sleep when I come back and the monitors wake up, they blink three times before settling down. I am hoping to avoid this. I previously had different external monitors hooked up via DVI and those didn't have this issue. My guess is that the HDMI talk through is more involved and is causing the blinking. Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Different cables? Would I loose quality if I used the VGA port on the back of the monitors instead of HDMI?

I have an AMD Ryzen (TUF Gaming) Windows 10 laptop with a Geforce card and HDMI output. Try what I may, it fails to drive a decade-old 30" dual-link DVI Apple monitor. My current setup uses two powered convertors: 1. HDMI -> DisplayPort (powered convertor; Comsol brand) 2. DisplayPort -> Mini DisplayPort (unpowered adapter; generic) 3. Mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI (powered convertor; Apple brand) However, Windows can't even identify a monitor is connected. The Cinema Display has a black screen with power light on. In the past, I successfully used links #2 and 3 of this chain with a DisplayPort-enabled laptop. But the new HDMI -> DP convertor (link #1) seems to break the chain. Any ideas? Even if only to get it working at low resolution? -- Other things I tried: 1. Generic USB-C to Mini DisplayPort convertor didn't work. (The laptop has a non-Thunderbolt USB-C 3.1 port) 2. Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter (unpowered) as link #3 didn't work either.

I currently have a 2015 Macbook Air 11" and a 2020 Macbook Pro 13". Both detect a monitor and let me move the mouse to the secondary display but show a black screen when connecting via Thunderbolt 2/3 to an HDMI cable and then to DVI-D (dual-link). The Air also doesn't detect any monitor when connecting it through thunderbolt 2 to HDMI then to a VGA cable, which the Pro is fine with. Any ideas on either situation?

For my third monitor, I have a DisplayPort cable from the hub to the monitor. The two DVI monitors work correctly and show up in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. The third monitor (the DisplayPort one) does not show up in the displays. Additionally, it is always mirroring one of my DVI monitors. What's interesting is that if I unplug one of the DVI monitors, the third monitor starts working correctly and shows up in the Arrangement tab. Is it not possible to have 3 monitors running where two are DVI and one is DP? --- Edit: The resolutions of the two monitors using DVI are 1920 x 1080 and the resolution of the monitor using DP is 2560 x 1440.

On a iMac 24-Inch (Early 2008) Model:A1225 EMC:2211 I have a bad display - can just about make out the apple logo when I power up but can't see where to enter the password. I have a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and connected another monitor that has been confirmed working on another comnputer. The signal seems to be recognised on the secondary monitor as the 'check signal cable' OSD goes immediately when the iMac is connected and reappears when the cable is disconnected. But the display stays dark. Perhaps I need to get into settings on the iMac to enable a secondary display. But how can I do that without seeing the screen ?
