Does anyone know if Parallels might expose the key generation and encryption features of Secure Enclave to a python script or even some C code running inside an Ubuntu guest OS? I'd like to be able to claim that my Parallels-hosted Python app is using the built-in algorithms and key extraction prevention inherent in an HSM.

On older Macs, we were able to run Windows on Boot Camp, which was an alternative to a VM.
Interestingly, if we install Windows on Boot Camp we can, from macOS Parallels, run that Windows as a VM.
Now to the question: we generally say a VM will be a little bit slower than Windows running directly on hardware.
What about a VM from the Boot Camp partition vs. a VM on a macOS partition? Which one is supposed to be faster?

I'd be grateful for any advice on how to fix drivers for Windows in UTM?

I'm trying to create a Chrome OS Flex USB install drive, to install it via Parallels, on macOS 13.4 (2019 i9 MBP).
I'm able to create it both via the Chrome browser extension, and the terminal
sudo dd if=chromeos.bin of=/dev/disk2 bs=4M status=progress
method... but after both methods, it shows the same wya in Disk Utility, however it's not readable in macOS, so Parallels cannot install *from it* -- there's no way to pick it as the USB drive source, or open the .bin image.
Am I missing something simple?
I cannot find this as a known issue, and there are instructions on how to do this with a Mac.. here's what I used:
- https://support.google.com/chromeosflex/answer/11552529?hl=en
- https://www.parallels.com/blogs/run-chrome-os-flex-in-parallels-desktop-for-mac/
I tried using the USB band new, and again formatted to APFS first — but both create the same thing when creating the ChromeOS Flex USB drive, so I don't think the starting point matters.. but here's the drive:
- https://www.westerndigital.com/products/usb-flash-drives/sandisk-cruzer-glide-usb-2-0#SDCZ60-032G-B35
The latest ChromeOS Flex .bin is here:
- https://dl.google.com/chromeos-flex/images/latest.bin.zip
Additional info I've found already: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChromeOSFlex/comments/swl5q9/chromeos_flex_links/

Thanks to Apple's Virtualization framework it is possible to use Rosetta 2 inside a Linux VM to run x86_64 applications.
All the videos and resources I've found online only explain how to install x86 applications using the apt package manager by appending
:amd64
to the application name.
For example:
sudo apt install libx11-6:amd64
You also need to add the amd64 apt repositories such as described in the Github repository macOS-Linux-VM-with-Rosetta .
But I'm wondering, and I haven't found an answer yet, how to execute x86_64 binaries that I have manually downloaded somewhere or compiled on my own, not through the apt registry.
I'm using Parallels 20.1.1 on an M1 Mac Pro running macOS 15.0.1, I have created a Ubuntu 22.04.2 VM with the Parallels Rosetta setting enabled.
I have also enabled Rosetta in my VM using the script provided by Parallels as described in Using Rosetta to run x86-64 Docker Containers and Binaries in Linux virtual machines with Parallels Desktop .
$ sudo ./rosetta_x86_sources.sh enable
$ sudo apt update
But when I execute a x86 binary inside this VM I get an error indicating that I'm running the wrong platform.
cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
how can I execute x86_64 binaries on a Linux VM with Rosetta 2?

The one problem I have is that neither VMWare nor Parallels seem to work with multiple displays on a **OS X Guest** (I know they both work with Windows guests).
Is anyone using OS X as guest system, with multiple display support. If so, what is the visualization product and/or workaround?

I use Parallels to run different type of OS (Windows, Linux) on the macOS ARM64. I would like to improve the overall security of the machine to be able to connect to a LAN or Wifi and still have a good handle over what is going in and out of the guest VM.
I have tried different approach, I realized that VPN client inside the guest create some type of issues, same when the VPN is in the Host. Overall I don't think that is the ideal option on macOS/parallels. I have tried to install linux firewall as guest however Parallels does not seems to let me use two network card at the same time on one VM; which is required for instance for PFire.
I haven't tried paid application directly installed on the host, I presume that is the only option left? In that regard, do you have any recommendation of a solution that could be installed as a desktop software but act as a firewall for the network ? I could pass the IP of the host as the default gateway and use bridge config in Parallels to have the guest vm appears as separate machine of the LAN. I know it is probably a bit of a stretch but I am hoping to avoid having to carry a box for a hardware firewall (I understand how much this would be better).

The most popular tools VMWare Fusion (v8) and Parallels (v11) only support up to DirectX 10
Is there any other alternative around that does support DirectX 11 now?
----------
Update: As of November 2016, Parallels v12 still doesn't support DirectX 11 (only 10.1).
Update: Parallels has released v13 in August 2017, and surprise, surprise! DirectX 11 is not supported yet... as expected

Does that mean it takes a long time to be able to set up the GUI interface of Ubuntu? If that's the case, maybe using an Intel based MacBook or a low cost PC with an Intel chip is still the most feasible solution.

I have been running a macOS Ventura virtual machine using both UTM and Parallels on a Ventura host and have been trying to put the VM to sleep so I can monitor what happens with the logs. However, it seems that the virtual machine is unable to go to sleep.
Pressing Sleep from the menu bar has no effect and
pmset sleepnow
returns Unable to sleep system: error 0xe00002e2
. I have tried setting sudo pmset -a disablesleep 0
but that doesn't work. Additionally, when I type pmset -g
some settings appear to be missing even though I have set them and they are present in com.apple.PowerManagement.plist - namely hibernatemode and hibernatefile. I have also noticed that pmset -g uuid
returns (NULL)`.
Would anyone know how I could get the virtual machine to sleep? Maybe I need to change some boot arguments?

While I am testing Asahi on a separate partition, there are certain things I need that are not yet available (BT, external display support). While I wait for that project to develop, I still have work that I need to do today so I am investigating using a Linux VM to replace my MacOS Desktop.
Linux VMs are working well on MacOS, with Parallels offering GPU paravituralization to get hardware acceleration working on the guest (is that Windows only?).
My issue is there doesn't seem to be a way to use any kind of "exclusive fullscreen" mode with a VM.
The top menu bar pops up when I move my cursor to the top of the screen and trackpad gestures are performed on the host rather than the VM (e.g. 3 finger swipe will change workspace on the MacOS host rather than the Gnome Linux guest)
I've only used UTM so far to experiment, but I'm wondering if there is a way to get a VM running in full screen mode such that MacOS is essentially disabled in the background until the VM is shutdown?
I want my MBP to run a Linux VM such that it feels like MacOS is not running in the background.

I’ve just stumbled across this site by accident and you good folk may be my last good hope before I abandon this endeavour.
**My questions are simple:**
1. Can Sierra be installed on a virtual
machine created by Parallels Desktop 10?
2. If 'yes' to 1, how do I do this?
—BACKGROUND—
I’ve heard a lot of conflicting stories about Sierra and would like to test it before taking the plunge of upgrading. I have a 27 inch mid 2011 iMac maxed out with 32GB RAM. I regularly run virtual machines in Parallels Desktop 10. These VMs (Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1) all work splendidly, so I figure I could try running Sierra on a virtual machine too.
I’ve read Apple’s licensing conditions and this is legal. Since my iMac is capable of running Sierra natively, my conclusion is my hardware will run Sierra fine in a virtual machine too.
**Now the problem…I can’t seem to create a Sierra virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 10.**
I’ve tried following and adapting the steps found at this discussion forum (https://forums.developer.apple.com/message/143196) , but with no joy to be found. Only frustration!
I’ve searched online (including here!) and cannot find confirmation anywhere that I can even do this on Parallels 10. Nothing to say it can be done. Nothing to say it cannot be done.
Apparently I have to purchase Parallels Desktop 12, or get my hands on Parallels Desktop 11 (cheaper) and create an El Capitan virtual machine and then upgrade to Sierra from within the VM (see http://blog.parallels.com/2016/06/16/macos-sierra-vm/) . Thing is, I have no reason to upgrade from Parelles Desktop 10 as it meets my needs otherwise. Besides, Apple doesn’t charge for Sierra so why should I spend money to install it on a virtual machine?
In principle I believe this should be possible somehow and I’m frustrated within myself that I can’t seem to do it!

I've read this should lead to a "Install macOS ..." app file which can be used by Parallels Desktop. But whenever I click "Get" on it opens "Software Update" page of System Preferences app
For even older macOS versions, there are links to download a DMG. I've downloaded a DMG of Sierra 10.12 with
InstallOS.pkg
in it. However, running PKG only shows the message "unable to install" (probably because I have 11.2 Big Sur). Both these DMG and PKG aren't suitable for Parallels as an image file.
How can I get a normal image of MacOS <= 10.14?
I use MacBook Pro 2019 with Intel CPU

I have Parallels 18 with a Windows 11 VM with the host on Apple Silicon. The VM runs normally. I am able to map network locations to drive letter for locations on the host machine.
What I would like to do is map a drive in the Windows VM to a folder on a different Mac computer that is connected via Ethernet (and also via wifi and Bluetooth). When I try to map a drive, I only see in the "Network" the local to the host machine locations.
It would seem that I should be able to map to other networked machines.
I have tried the following configuration changes, but nothing has worked so far.
- Change VM Configure > Hardware > Network > Source to Ethernet;
- changed Devices > Network from Shared to Bridged > Ethernet;
- enabled nearby sharing in Windows;
It is possible to map a network drive in the Windows VM to another local machine?
EDIT 1
I think I have resolved this. I tried a lot of things, but I think the thing that worked was that I had to go into Parallels > Configure > Sharing > Share Mac > Manage Folders. There I had to add a checkmark next to the host Mac machine name. The check mark for the user name then dimmed as it is included in the whole machine.
After that I was able to see the drives attached to the host.
I am thinking it might be best to undo some of the other steps I tried. But a bit hesitant for fear of losing something.

However, if I put the Parallels VM to sleep and then wake it up, I have to manually open Finder and click through the steps to mount OneDrive again.
Is there a way to automatically mount OneDrive in Windows on Parallels (a network drive that is always in the same place) from within a bash script so I can just execute the script instead of manually mounting the drive each time?
