Why does Chrome on Android launch tabs or redirect existing tabs to spammy ads (spontaneously, it seems)?
When using Chrome on my Nexus 6, I often get taken to a [data URI][1] that causes a modal that reads something like: > **An embedded page at s3.amazonaws.com says:** > Message! > Congratulations Grande Communications user, you have been chosen for a chance to get a new iPhone.... > Click OK to conti...
When using Chrome on my Nexus 6, I often get taken to a data URI that causes a modal that reads something like:
> **An embedded page at s3.amazonaws.com says:**
> Message!
> Congratulations Grande Communications user, you have been chosen for a chance to get a new iPhone....
> Click OK to continue
There is no Cancel button. **Why does Google allow developers to launch pop-ups with no cancel button?**
This doesn't occur from clicking on a link. Usually it happens while I'm on a tab, and suddenly another tab will spawn with the modal. I don't think it's caused by a visit to a dubious host, because it's happened when I've had only top sites (Amazon, ebay, etc.) open in the other tabs.
I have run Malwarebytes and a few other security tools and they all say my phone is secure and clean.
What exactly is happening? On the standard Chrome browser, web extensions can rewrite URLs but Chrome for mobile doesn't have web extensions. Could an app intercept network calls from the browser? Could the sites I'm visiting just be serving malicious ads?

Recently I have downloaded two games:
1. Deer Hunter
2. PreHistoric Worm
But after that I have my browser which keeps redirecting me to
The WebMd app which is showing an "Update Your Browser" message with a "Install Now" link to Play Store (click image for larger variant)
I don't have Opera and it still tells me to update my Opera browser.
I closed the application and retried it, and again it is displayed with some "Warning your HM1S is affected with Virus" and starts vibrating.
**Note:** Please avoid anything like this post suits well on MIUI/forum, I have already asked there and got a very immature answer as to disable Java Scripts even after seeing my below screenshot.
[Update]
I have tried using mobile data and now it does not redirect so it's more of the modern problem the app are clean
http://ad.adsmatte.com
It is happening every time I load the page – after few seconds, it automatically gets redirected to this AdsMatte and doesn't go back to the previous page, even if I press the Back key.
In an application like WebMd, when I load the app, after few seconds it is covered with a full screen ad whereas it used to display the options menu. This is blocking my view and I cannot see what is being displayed by the application.

I received a call which Google marked as Suspected Spam Caller, but it was a legitimate call from a company I do business with. Can I report to Google that this is not spam so others are not confused? I selected the call in my history, and there is an option to report as spam, but not an option to report as **not** spam.

Does Android offer ways to sign a proof of a unique hardware device?
- It can be a cryptographic proof; it does not need to be fixed id, so it can be used for tracking
- This would be mainly used to combat spam/bots
- The assumption is that if we can have proof of real hardware devices, any spammer does not have access to a significant number of hardware devices (thousands)
- The proof would not be used to track users
- The proof would need to be generated and checked only once per user
Are there other alternatives for such proofs in Android/Google ecosystem?

I have a problem with spam calls, they call me many times a day. To solve this problem, I've tried many call blockers apps (NoPhoneSpam, Calls Blacklist, CallBlocker, etc...) and none of them work. Some of them worked for a while, but then stopped to work.
The spammers use a prefix and change the last 3 or 4 numbers of the phone, and I want to block them all. The android native phone app allows me to block numbers, and it works, but without wildcards, so I can't block all numbers with a given prefix without entering them one by one (not an option).
I want to know if the Phone app blacklist is stored anywhere that I can edit it with a text editor, or if there is a way to add phones to it using terminal, so I can write a script to add all phones I want to block.

All apps before installation are scanned by a built-in security check. I have run a security scan on my phone and nothing suspicious was found except needing to update MIUI. No app was installed on that day and I do not download any unknown apk's from unknown sites. All apps have always been installed from Google Play Store.
The number does not exist in my contact list and has never ever been dialed from or any call received on this phone. TrueCaller site reports that number as a spam number from India.
Could someone explain this?

The Google Phone app now reports when a suspected call is spam. Right now when I receive such a call, I have the choice to block that number. But what I'd like to do is pre-emptively set it up so that any such call is automatically blocked without my intervention.
I've investigated apps like Root Call Blocker Pro, and while they seem to do the silent, transparent blocking I'm after, it seems to require me actively maintaining a black list, entering the phone numbers I want to block. I'd like to rely on the Google's suspicions to block them. How can I set this up?
Alternately, might this be something my carrier can handle on a network-level? I'd be happy to pay for a relatively cheap app or work up a tasker/etc solution, but I'd rather not pay AT&T for a monthly service.

I used
adb shell ps -A
to list my processes and the spamming PID is the following line:
vendor_audit 646 1 2142068 2592 0 0 S auditd
Also I checked the other PID mentioned in the log, it's this one:
system 1173 673 11627288 282980 0 0 S system_server
*Note: I do not know what all these numbers in the log output are, I assume some random device identifiers and similar. Just to be on the safe side, I changed them before uploading, but I kept the length the same. I left the PID numbers*
Device is a Galaxy Tab S5e with the preinstalled system, not rooted.

I have deleted the conversation, but more messages have kept coming yesterday and today.
Is there any way to block or report the spammer?
- I would rather not open the message.
- The long-press menu does not show any block option, only "Delete" which I tried already.

What I'm wondering is how can the phone decide whether a call is a spam call? It can't be based on the phone number since 99% of the time (it seems) those are spoofed. Once in a while, I get calls from people who received a spam call with my phone number spoofed.
I've heard a year or so ago that the TELCO were going to implement a system to help verify phone numbers, but I've not seen anything more than that.

I've recently bought a new Android smartphone. After setting it up and loading my contacts onto it I thought that would be it.
Now after some days, every time I unlock the phone it takes a few seconds before it opens the default browser and opens some spam website. I tried to see what was causing it. I removed any apps I didn't know I could trust, but the problem persisted. After trying to solve it for some time I gave up and reset the phone to factory default. Now after having it reset to the default it ran without issues for roughly a week before the problem reappeared.
I tried to uninstall some apps in order to see if they were to cause of it, but nothing changed after doing so. However I did notice that if I turn off the wifi it won't even try to open the browser (I haven't tried mobile data since I don't have a bundle). This makes me feel like it might be related to something on the network but that wouldn't explain why only that phone would have the issue when there are at least 6 android phones on that very same network.
I hope that there is someone who can help me find the cause of this issue and help me solve it.
TL;DR
When unlocking my phone, it opens the browser and tries to open a spam website. But only does so while connected to the wifi.
Things I've tried so far:
- Factory reset (only helped for a limited time)
- Clearing the browser cache and all related data
- Removing any app I don't know to be reliable
- Attempting to find what triggers it (seems like some type of internet connection is required??)
The device is the Doogee Shoot 1. As for the browser, the default is set to be the Android browser, but if I change the default it would use Chrome just as well. It seems to really just use the browser that is set to default.

Android does a great job of blocking spam callers. However, my phone provider sends me messages when I miss calls, so while I don't receive the spam calls themselves I always receive these follow-up sms in my inbox;
Note that while this SMS is sent by my phone provider (Telstra) the number appears as the number of the caller (in this case 02 9133 5694), not the number of my phone provider.
I don't want to disable these SMS as they're genuinely useful to receive when I miss calls from people I actually know. Also, clearly Android knows that this message is related to a spam caller, since it has flagged the message, so how can I get Android to just block these messages?

A variant of this message appeared on my phone screen when I attempted to report a text message as spam.
Before going ahead with this, I have some questions.
1. When "might" these messages be sent to my mobile carrier?
3. Why can't Google tell me definitively whether or not this will happen?
3. Why don't I get to choose whether or not this happens?
4. When "might" this incur an additional cost?
5. Why doesn't Google know if it will?
I am not comfortable with the vague warnings that "stuff might happen" and that I "might be charged for it". These are not statements that inspire confidence; and without knowing under what circumstances they will take place, it is impossible to make an informed decision.

Has anyone seen this type of output before?
