When searching for mail in Mail.app with a Gmail account, every instance of the mail shows up with every Gmail label, especially in the Bin label, since Apple mail autosaves drafts as you go along, there can be 50 instances of a single mail just in the Bin folder. This makes searching impossible. So I'm trying to turn off those labels in Gmail but no success so far. I have disabled "Show in IMAP" option in the Gmail label settings for all those labels then deleted all the cached items in ~/Library/Mail/V2 and restarted Mail.app but that didn't do the trick.

I really messed up. My main email account is a Gmail instance operated by my University as a benefit for alumni. In the process of cleaning out the 20,000 mail message "Archived" into the "All Mail" folder by my various iOS devices I ended up deleting the mail from my "Sent Mail" mailbox and all the old mail I still had in my INBOX. I've already contacted my University email team asking if they can restore deleted email but I'm not holding my breath. What I have now is an iPhone connected to this same Gmail account that has a cached copy of both the INBOX and the "Sent Mail" from before I messed up. So I put it in AirPlane mode and launched Mail. Sure enough the messages are there and not just the headers, every message I clicked on had the full text, but probably not the attachments. As soon as I take this phone out of Airplane mode and connect to the server things will sync and the messages will go poof! I watched it happen on my iPad. So I'm trying to copy the 200-300 messages in these two mailboxes to a safe location so that I can then reconnect to the server and then restore (re-copy) them to their rightful home. The problem is that with the phone in Airplane mode it'll let me edit the mailbox, select all the messages and then move them to another email account/mailbox, but nothing actually happens because the phone is in Airplane mode (offline). I've tried turning off mail for the problem account and then turning off airplane mode to allow my other email accounts back online thinking they may sync the offline move. That doesn't happen and when I do that iOS hides the mailboxes for the problematic and now disabled mail account. So I can't move the messages in that mode, since I can't see them. Is there some way to export the mail or mailboxes to local storage on the iPhone such that I could then get things back online and then re-import them? Is there utility or application that I could use that might help? Keep in mind, the problem gmail account cannot touch the network or communicate with the Gmail server or the messages I'm trying to save go poof.

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and set up Mac Mail with my Gmail accounts. At first, when the mail was being imported, the labels for my emails listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser appeared. Then, Mac ran an update for 10.15 (Catalina), and all of the labels for my emails listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser ***disappeared***. I've ensured that the 'Show in IMAP' checkbox is ticked next to all of the labels I wish to see as folders in Apple Mail. It shows the mailbox but not the labels for the messages listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've contacted Apple support, but they haven't provided any guidance.

Mail program 16.0, on Sequoia 15.5, 16" Mac Book Pro Apple chip M3 Max I have emails that come to my Mac Mail program via @iCloud.com email account. I also have in the same mail app a few Gmail imap accounts. Sometimes id like to forward an @iCloud.com email to a person using a gmail account - which im told by apple tech support im suppose to be able to do & have done previously with no issues - until lately. Not sure when the problem started. I'll select the @iCloud.com email to forward, click forward, change the " from account " to a gmail account, compose and send the email. The problem is that the emails are not sent using the selected gmail account , but are being sent by apple mail and is using my Apple ID - which I do not want to be used or made public. Id like the email to be forwarded using the selected gmail account. How can I figure out what causing this unexpected behavior & how can I make the forwarded emails be sent from the selected gmail account and not my Apple ID account? To add to the frustration & curiosity, when I try the above send procedure using apple mail & forwarding with gmail , it works as expected on all my iOS devices - iPhone & iPad. Ive checked the gmail accounts on my MacBook Pro to make sure the smtp's are correct and they all show gmail credentials. Ive also removed & re-added the gmail accounts with no change in behavior. I dont know what else to try / check. Help appreciated. Attached is a screen shot of the drop down menu I use to select gmail account when composing the forwarding email. Thank you. email window

Can I use Mac Mail.app as a searchable archive of emails stored locally? How can I set this up? I use Gmail as my primary email and interface. I'm out of space. I have mac Mail.app linked with Gmail, so all my messages are there but I don't use that as an interface. I want to archive the messages in Mac Mail as one or multiple year files in a way that they remain searchable and then remove them from Google to free up space, without removing them from my Mac Mail archives. In the event I needed to search a message from say 2010, I'd like to be able to open up Mac Mail and search there if it is no longer on the Gmail server. How would you set this up please? Sincere thanks for any ideas.

The thing is, I feel like moving a message from my Inbox to a local folder (i.e. "On my Mac") works for all accounts except Gmail. Whenever I move a message from my Inbox to a local folder (either by drag-and-drop or with a rule in Mail.app), I discovered that the email is still in Gmail. It just isn't in the Inbox anymore, I have to go to "All Mail" to see it. Is there a way to erase the message from the server as soon as it is stored locally? (or even with some delay like with deleted messages) Otherwise, it kind of defeats the purpose of all this... *I discovered that more than 1,000 emails are still stored online while I stored them all on my mac...*

I'm using the outlook email client on my MacBook to access my Gmail inbox. I've already set it up as an IMAP account. However, when I delete or move an email on my Mac it doesn't automatically sync the changes on the Gmail server. And when I right-click on my client Gmail inbox folder and select repair, it complains that there are changes made locally on my client that have not been synced to the Gmail server. When I right-click on my inbox on the client to do synchronize now, it says it's already synchronized, but it isn't. Does anyone know what's happening? Thank you very much.

Gmail image: In Mail app the window looks same but has buttons to add the event: Also there is no option to share the attachment into the Calendar directly. I see that Gmail app parsed the event info, but even with Google Calendar installed I can not do anything with it. I have these options in Gmail app on Android. Why is that and is there another easy option to import this event without Apple Mail? It's Google who did not code this feature or Apple's restriction? One of our managers has a huge Gmail mailbox, ~400GB. They started it when it was more human-sized, managed with Apple Mail. Growing over time wasn't apparently a problem for a 2021 MBP with 32GB of RAM. Now they had to change the computer and we didn't have the chance to migrate the profile on the new device, so we had to start a new sync from scratch. This proved to be a nightmare! Gmail is enforcing an IMAP hourly (or daily) data transfer limit of ~1.5GB. This makes it impossible to feed Mail from IMAP directly. We did a Google Takeout of the mailbox, and we now have this multi-Gigabyte Mbox file. Trying to import it in Mail hangs it, reaching ~95GB of consumed RAM (out of the 48 physically available). So I was wondering if there's some other way to load this file directly in Mail without passing through the import. Maybe placing the file (original or converted) into Mail data dir, and letting it reindex later. If this is not possible, is there any other way to work with this Mbox file? thanks

The only thing I added was the "set sendmail" line. .msmtprc looks like this:

tls on
# tls_starttls on
# following is different from ssmtp:
# tls_trust_file /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

from me@gmail.com
user me
password my_password

# Default
account default : gmail
If I run the mail command on the command line it lets me address and compose a message, but I get the following error:
msmtp: no recipients found
Sending data to /opt/local/bin/msmtp failed: Process exited with a non-zero status
cannot send message: Process exited with a non-zero status
There are no entries in ~/.msmtp.log What have I done wrong here?

I wanted to give Apple Mail a try on my iPhone. Up until now I've used Spark. The main problem I've encountered is that Apple Mail has no idea of any email addresses that aren't explicitly in my contacts. This is a problem if I want to write an email to someone. When I compose a new message, Spark will pull all and any email addresses that have in any way been used in prior email messages (those sent to me or those I sent), even if those email addresses aren't in my Apple contacts, and suggest those email addresses to me so I don't have to type the entire address in. Is there a way to import this "knowledge" into Apple Mail? It's a bit of a deal breaker, as I find I'm having to go back to Spark to get the email address and then back to Apple Mail to send a message. One other thing: Apple Mail is downloading ALL my old messages over many accounts. This is the reason I waited so long to try using it -- I didn't want, say, 10 years of old messages over several accounts taking up space on my phone. The size, however, seems to be minimal, so I'm giving it a try. However no matter how many times I select all the old messages in all accounts (the main heading) and say to mark them as read, Apple Mail says I still have hundreds or thousands of unread messages. I have done this over and over in the last day but it always seems there are unread messages. Is this because Apple Mail is still downloading old messages and at some point it will stop and I can then just mark everything as read? (I know I can go to each Gmail account and mark them as read there, but that is somewhat time-consuming -- the nice thing about Apple Mail is that it lets you interact with multiple accounts at once).

I recently bought an iPhone and tried logging in with my existing Apple account, which I created a long time ago. When I checked the "Sign-In and Security" section, I noticed that my account had a primary email ID and also an unfamiliar iCloud email address (xxxxx@icloud.com). I have no idea how that iCloud email got linked to my account, as I never created it. I contacted Apple Support about this, and they mentioned that Apple cannot delete the iCloud email. This has made me feel like my account might be compromised. Additionally, I asked Apple Support if they could remove my primary Apple ID (which is a Gmail address) so that I can create a new Apple account with the same Gmail address. I'm concerned about the security of my account and don't want any unknown Apple ID associated with it. Can someone kindly help me resolve this issue?

A little bit of searching showed that that was Mail marking the message as potential junk, but I don't have junk mail filtering turned on in the settings. I can fix it by moving the messages to Junk and then back to the Inbox, but that sucks. How do I get Mail.app to stop assuming everything is junk?

I added a Gmail account to my iPhone, but it receives emails too slowly. I decided to try an experiment: 1. I plugged my phone into a charger and connected it to wifi. I turned it off, then turned it on and left it waiting on the homescreen, ready to tap it if it's about to sleep again. 2. I used gmail.com to send myself an email. I started a stopwatch after it confirmed it was sent. I checked how long it took for Mail.app on my Mac to receive the email, and I also checked how long it took for Mail on my iPhone to receive the email. I did this three times. My Mac received the email in 5 or fewer seconds every time (5s, 3s, 3s). My iPhone... after waiting for 7 minutes and the mail still hadn't arrived, I decided to stop wasting my time. After opening the Mail app, it finally refreshed itself, and pulled the new email. After opening Mail for the first time, subsequent emails (as long as the phone stays turned on for the whole period in-between) are received fast, in 5-20 seconds. The phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. In Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data on my iPhone, Fetch Automatically is already selected. Gmail is using Fetch (it can only use Fetch or Manual). How can I make the iPhone receive new emails faster, even if it is sleeping or has just been sleeping?
