When I was working for a university they bought me a 2017 iMac Pro to use for work from home, which came with some sort of MDM profile linked to the university. When I left several years later, my boss said I could keep the Mac since it was getting old, any new hires would get a new machine anyway. I used it for a while without changing anything, but the MDM part of the OS was still linked. I understood that it was possible to remove the machine from the network from Apple Business Manager, and this would allow it to be reset, so I asked my old boss. Unfortunately, whoever originally ordered the machine from Apple had left, and they didn't know the info/passwords required. This was hardly a top priority for them so while they said they'd look into it and I chased a couple of times, nothing further happened and I eventually stopped using it. Today I tried to delete my personal information from the machine so I could get rid of it, but since I don't know the firmware password, I can't even factory reset it. I had a “bright” idea to try to remotely erase the machine using Find My from my phone. I hit erase, the machine restarted, and the firmware password field showed up. I restarted the machine from the power button, and my account is still there. When I logged in it connected to the internet and tried to remote-erase again, but that just went back to the firmware password screen. Do I have any options now that don't require a firmware password? To be clear I'm not asking to remove the supervision/MDM profiles, I'm asking to remove my personal information, Apple ID, etc. Then I can hand it over to someone from the university, and if someone wants to use it they will have to go dig out that password (or more likely it will end up properly disposed – a shame for a machine which is still plenty powerful, but hard to get people to jump through hoops for ex-property!).

after a clean install of catalina I have this weird problem that my mac shows the prohibitory symbol after I enter my password. However, if I enter it fast enough it will continue startup as normal. I don't know if thats a weird coincidence or some software messing with me. Confusing enough, the problem persisted after I made a new clean install (erase hard drive, boot from usb, install catalina). - After entering password => Prohibitory Sign - Clean installed twice - Ran hard drive repair twice - No weird kext installed (apart from cisco, dropbox and intel energy) Looking forward, Markus

So I just updated to macOS Big Sur from Mojave. I had zero problems with right-clicking before the update, nor did I face them immediately after updating. However, after I shut down my iMac Pro, and started it after a while, I cannot right-click. So far, I have tried: - Restarting(several times) - Shutting down my mouse and powering it up again - Deleting the mouse from Bluetooth section of System preferences and reconnecting it with a USB. So far, nothing has worked. I will appreciate all help! Best regards Edit: Re-installing the macOS Big Sur fixed the problem, but I would like to know if a more convenient method exists, should the problem repeat itself in future.

Which exact CPU models are used or can be used in the iMac Pro?
The iMac Pro's CPU is upgradable, but documentation on this seems scarce. I found out that the top end 18-core CPU is a Xeon W-2195. Which other CPUs are supported? Update: A slightly modified Xeon W-2145 known as "2140B" seems to be the 8-core base model which has recently been canceled.

Trapped at home with COVID (not diagnosed, but sheltering in place). My company will not allow me to install VPN software on my desktop (an iMac Pro). However, I have my Macbook Pro 16 with me that does have VPN. My hope was to be able to mirror the screen via Thunderbolt so I could take advantage of the larger monitor. I was also hoping to reuse the wireless keyboard and mouse from my iMac Pro. Is there an easy way to in effect turn the iMac Pro in to a display while (easily) switching the mouse and keyboard between desktop and laptop? I am fine twice a day reconnecting Bluetooth between them if necessary but hoping there is a more lightweight solution. Stay healthy and safe all!

See plot: I am running a Mathematica code using only one kernel (note that there are 20 kernels as the CPU supports Hyper-threading). The room temperature is 24ºC and the fans are going at the minimum speed. Anyone knows why? Note that I am not asking what Turbo Boost is but rather why it is not performing as advertised by Apple . Here it is said that the Turbo Ratios can be found using Console.app. Is this still possible in Mojave? I could not find AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.

How to reach the max Turbo Boost frequency with a 10-core iMac Pro

According to Apple my 10-core iMac Pro should Turbo Boost to 4.5GHz when running single-thread tasks. The OS installed is Mojave. When running a Mathematica code using only one kernel, Intel Power Gadget says that the frequency is 3.8-3.9GHz rather than 4.5GHz. The room temperature is 24ºC and the fans are going at the minimum speed. Note that a single-thread tasks is equivalent to a 5% load as their are 20 threads available thanks to Hyper-threading. See plot: Perhaps the task I am running somehow does not demand the max Turbo Boost frequency. Could someone suggest a task/computation that could make my iMac Pro reach the advertised 4.5GHz? Note that I am not asking what Turbo Boost is as this has been answered Here .

Why is Target Disk Mode so slow?

Two macs: 1. maxed out 2017 MacBook Pro (MBP) 2. base model iMac Pro (iMP) Using the MBP standalone, the internal drive gives me read & write speeds of about 2600 & 2000 MB/s respectively. Using the iMP standalone, the internal drive gives me read & write speeds of about 2500 & 2900 MB/s respectively. All pretty darn good, obviously. Now, in separate tests, I connect each to the other in Target Disk Mode over Thunderbolt 3 (using a short 1 foot cable so as not to lose the maximum 40Gb/s speed). Booting the iMP from its internal drive and then connecting the MBP in Target Disk Mode, testing the MBP (Target Disk) I get read & write speeds of about 450 & 700 MB/s respectively. Then the reverse: Booting the MBP from its internal drive and then connecting the iMP in Target Disk Mode, testing the iMP (Target Disk) I get read & write speeds of about 200 & 250 MB/s respectively!! What on earth is going on? Thunderbolt 3 in real world tests with any other fast enough drive is capable of at least about 2800 MB/s. Does anyone know why Target Disk Mode is so slow? I understand there's the obvious speculative answer of "Well something else relating specifically to Target Disk Mode is obviously bottle-necking it." Ok... obviously. But I'm wondering if anyone knows anything specific on the technical level of what's going on, and if there's anything that can be done to improve it. Given the iMP drive over Target Disk Mode being so slow, even significantly slower than the MBP when really it should be the reverse, I'm guessing there's something the T2 chip is doing that's bottlenecking it, but again, just wondering if anyone knows anything official or definitive, rather than just speculation. Thanks!

I lock my work iMac Pro every night, but sometimes when I get in the next morning music is leaking out of my headphones. I've discovered that the "unmute" and "play" keyboard buttons are still effective when the OS is locked. It would seem that the cleaner running a cloth over the keyboard "makes things happen" even when the machine should be locked. Short of remembering to close any app that can play media before I lock the machine, can this be disabled? Ideally I'd like these keyboard shortcuts to do nothing while the machine is locked. It doesn't seem quite right that somebody can control my computer to some degree without logging in!

On December 26, 2017 I took delivery of a 10-core iMac Pro. From the time of its arrival I have had a serious problem with external USB3 drives (I have tried a variety from different manufacturers) attached to the ports on the back of the iMac Pro, ejecting 95% of the time when I wake the iMac Pro from sleep. If I restart, the external USB3 hard drives reappear and function perfectly until the next time I put the iMac Pro to sleep. They do not dismount during use. The only setting I have checked in System Preferences > Energy Saver is “prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is off”. To solve this problems I have tried: 1. resetting the SMC Controller; 2. resetting the NVRAM; 3. completely reinstalling the Mac OS High Sierra software using Command > Recovery; 4. Using a variety of USB3 HD’s from different manufacturers. None of this has resolved the issue. I am now able to use my new iMac Pro with only the supplied keyboard attached to a USB port on the back of the iMac Pro and two external Thunderbolt HD’s (which do not produce any problems). Any solution that you can supply to these issues would be greatly appreciated.

What is your experience with that setup (bugs and problems)? This question maybe sound like a duplicate but I am asking specifically for the iMacPro (2018 model) and not just an iMac.

I will soon be upgrading from a 2014 Mac Mini to an iMac Pro. I am a little surprised to discover that the iMac Pro does not have a digital optical audio input (TOSLINK/SPDIF), which is something I've been relying on with the Mini for audio capture, for I have a piece of home studio equipment that only has an optical digital output. I thought there might be an external USB-C audio capture device on the market instead, but a look through online stores doesn't offer any hobbyist-level solution (there is high-end pro audio gear that is way beyond my price bracket or needs). A few devices do analogue input (such as the Griffin iMic and the Behringer Uca202), but that's not what I'm after; neither can do optical/digital input. The search is hindered by all the output devices showing up from the same query, so perhaps I missed something. It seems like an obvious device to offer. Has anyone solved this problem? What are my options?

Today was one of those days. Long story short, an old LaCie drive failed spectacularly and I meant to replace it with two, LaCie d2 6TB Thunderbolt 3 drives running RAID 1. I use SoftRaid. I have an iMac Pro. 1. SoftRaid recognized the drives, but wouldn't use them to build a RAID 1 volume because of some voodoo LaCie does that makes it look externally like there's only a few MB available. 2. The only thing SoftRaid would allow me to do is delete the 6TB volume on each drive. Which I did. Now nothing recognizes the drives at all. 3. Softraid started doing its "reinstall driver and restart" endless loop. No problem, I thought. Just disconnect all of my SoftRaid volumes, boot into Recovery Mode and use Startup Security Utility to turn off Secure Boot. 4. Tried to run Startup Security Utility. Tells me that there are no administrator accounts (?) so it won't let me load it. 5. Deleted .AppleSetupDone and reinstalled High Sierra, went through setup and created a new admin account, following Googled instructions. No difference. 6. Tried booting into Single User Mode to see if I could terminal-foo my way out of it. Hangs after an "AdjustBusy timeout in 40000ms!" so I could never get to a command prompt. So at the moment, I'm at a loss. I can't load Startup Security Utility, and I think my road to recovery begins there. Really want to avoid the whole 2-day format/restore cycle. Any ideas?

Which CPU option on the iMac Pro gives you two FMAs?
I know for Skylake X you need a 61xx or better CPU to get two FMAs, but it’s not clear what the situation is with Skylake W ? Everything I have found for Skylake W just says “up to two FMAs”, without any specific detail as to which CPUs have 1 and which have 2?
