I have a 3-hour long .mp4 video that has sensible breaks roughly every 30 minutes or so. I want to export this into multiple videos of each section, but have run into nothing but problems trying to do so. This isn't something I do often so I don't really want to invest in commercial tools for this one task, but as yet I can't find any free tool capable of this job. I really would prefer to just cut this up without having to decode and re-encode the file(s) all over again. I'd like to just mark the sections I want, and spit them out as standalone .mp4s. No other edits, no corrections, no effects, no anything... just cut & export without any formatting changes at all. I thought Handbrake could do this, but if it can I can't figure out how. I then thought maybe iMovie (10.x as I'm on Mavericks), but that's been nothing but headache and appears to decode the entire movie first before working with it anyway. Quicktime itself seems only able to direct export as .mov and I don't want to re-encode to mp4 all over again. I keep running into free/open source programs that either are only free in a very limited fashion (like 5 minute max exports, or nasty watermarks, etc.) or that won't run on Mavericks. Is what I'm looking to do just not possible without commercial software? Is it really so difficult to split one long mp4 into several shorter ones?

Export MOV to MP4 with Quicktime on Yosemite
I have a screen capture of my computer screen using QuickTime's Screen Recording feature, but that saves it to an `MOV` format. I'd like to export it to `MP4.` Is that possible without installing anything else? I'm using Yosemite, and I'm pretty sure I could do that with Mavericks.

Can I download MP3, MP4, WAV files to the iPhone and play them from Files?
I have private MP3, MP4 and WAV files that are not available via the itunes store, as they are private. I use Linux, so how can I download them from a web server, save them on the iPhone, manage them and play them? Is the Files app the means of doing that?

The AVC Level and bitrate both higher than the first video, but it plays normally。 So why can't the first video play? I want to know which MP4 videos the iPhone can't play. Apple doesn't have specific specs, but says it supports MP4 and H.264

Background info: Apple provides hardware acceleration support for encoding h264 and h265 videos through VideoToolbox. ffmpeg has built-in support for VideoToolbox through the h264_videotoolbox codec. Problem: I have a bunch of .png images I want to make into a high-quality mp4 video. Using "-crf 18" works fine without hardware acceleration, as in the following:
ffmpeg -pattern_type glob -i '*.png' -framerate 25 -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset veryslow out.mp4
But this takes forever. I can force a bitrate and use my Mac's hardware acceleration by doing something like this:
ffmpeg -hwaccel videotoolbox -pattern_type glob -i '*.png' -framerate 25 -c:v h264_videotoolbox -b:v 7000k out.mp4
...which encodes at 100fps rather than E..V..... Profile (from 0 to 4) (default 0) baseline E..V..... Baseline Profile main E..V..... Main Profile high E..V..... High Profile -level E..V..... Level (from 0 to 52) (default 0) 1.3 E..V..... Level 1.3, only available with Baseline Profile 3.0 E..V..... Level 3.0 3.1 E..V..... Level 3.1 3.2 E..V..... Level 3.2 4.0 E..V..... Level 4.0 4.1 E..V..... Level 4.1 4.2 E..V..... Level 4.2 5.0 E..V..... Level 5.0 5.1 E..V..... Level 5.1 5.2 E..V..... Level 5.2 -coder E..V..... Entropy coding (from 0 to 2) (default 0) cavlc E..V..... CAVLC entropy coding vlc E..V..... CAVLC entropy coding cabac E..V..... CABAC entropy coding ac E..V..... CABAC entropy coding -a53cc E..V..... Use A53 Closed Captions (if available) (default true) -allow_sw E..V..... Allow software encoding (default false) -require_sw E..V..... Require software encoding (default false) -realtime E..V..... Hint that encoding should happen in real-time if not faster (e.g. capturing from camera). (default false) -frames_before E..V..... Other frames will come before the frames in this session. This helps smooth concatenation issues. (default false) -frames_after E..V..... Other frames will come after the frames in this session. This helps smooth concatenation issues. (default false) ``` What is "level"? How do "baseline"/"main"/"high" differ and what is a "profile"...? I'd appreciate examples of how to use h264_videotoolbox properly with ffmpeg and specifically how to achieve something like the CRF option that exists with the default h264 codec.

So I have a simple task that I do a lot: trimming a video's head and tail off. On Windows, I open the photo, click edit, drag the bars to where I would like to cut, and I save. It will save as mp4 and I can overwrite the video by selecting the original video before saving (giving the new video the same name). However, on mac, it's not so easy. Method 1: Quicktime -- Open the MP4 video in Quicktime, trim it using an ios-like interface, and save the video as a MOV (no option to overwrite or to save as MP4). Import this MOV into Premiere Rush (which takes a long time to launch and is slow), tell premiere to export to mp4, and wait a minute. Then delete the original mp4 and the mov, and I've finally got the trimmed mp4. Method 2: VLC -- https://www.videoproc.com/troubleshoot-vlc/cut-or-trim-video-in-vlc-on-mac.htm It's clunky, but faster than Quicktime and better suited to my needs. One downside is that I cant tweak the start point once I start recording, I cant see ahead and if it goes too far ill have to trim it a second time, and there are pauses at the beginning and end. Method 3: iMovie -- this is my go-to method for splicing clips together and complex trimming (removing segments in the middle). However, it's slow to export and about as slow as the Quicktime method. I after researching, I could not find one app that trims as easily as Windows Video Player. I am asking the community if there is a simple, Quicktime-like video trimmer for mac that exports in MP4 instead of MOV. I am working with files that are usually 2-3 GB and therefore try to stay away from online services as much as possible (hence why I don't use cloud convert for mov to mp4). Edit: It needs to be free. **Solution:** along with losslesscut specified in the answer below, another solution is the Quick Look function. I'm not 100% sure if this is lossless, but if you want to simply trim video Quick Look has a simple video trimmer that allows you to replace existing video or create a new video in the original format. It is quite fast, making me think it is lossless.

I'm using manim (Python) to create animations. When I preview the 4k MP4 files it generates with Quicktime player, the app displays the whole content at its original size. But I would like those MP4 files to open at a smaller window size. And at this point, I generate about 50 preview files an hour, so resizing them to a smaller size each and every time is tedious. Is there a way to make sure that the QuickTime window opens by default to a size I want, no matter what the native resolution is? A way for QuickTime to remember the size of its last window opened would be perfect. Thanks.

Best way to merge mp4 files
Got a bunch of .mp4 videos (info shows H.264 Video + AAC Audio) that are chapters of a larger video. I'd like to merge them, but not sure which is the best way. I don't have Quicktime Pro, but I'll get it if that's the best way to do this. Edit: Just to clariify this is Mac OSX 10.6 I'm on.

Apparently the Apple TV Mac app [supports copying of MP4 files to the Apple TV](https://support.apple.com/guide/tvapp-mac/import-items-already-on-your-computer-atvebf18f94f/mac) , but [Catalina is required](https://www.pocket-lint.com/apps/news/apple/139717-apple-s-tv-app-explained-how-does-it-work-and-where-is-it-available) , and I have reasons not to update to Catalina. I tried [VLC for Apple TV](https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-appletv.html) , and it performed terribly. It couldn't even cache a 100MB MP4 and loop it - kept freezing and spinning a progress wheel. (It also refuses to remember the credentials to connect to my local network, which while not a deal-breaker, is very annoying.) So what other options are there? Thanks.

What exactly does avconvert do with multiPass and disableFastStart parameters?
I don't understand exactly what the `avconvert —multiPass` and `—disableFastStart` parameters do. Reading the manpage didn't get me any further. Thank you for an answer

How to see when audio playing on mp4
I have mp4 files that are lengthy videos. The sound is purposefully only on during important parts. I'm trying to find a way to visually (or automatically?) find the time periods of the video when there is active audio.

vlc: convert multiple files
I want to convert multiple files from .mov to .mp4. I have used `vlc` for converting single files. Can I batch convert using `vlc`? I know it is possible on `windows`, and I have found many tutorials.

Documentation related to the **ISO/IEC 13818-3** standard. The standard for information technology, generic coding of moving pictures, and associated audio information systems. I would like to know before coding and modifying audio files such as **.mp4** files submitted to the iTunes store or other media type's such as **Podcasts**, that it applies to Apple's media standards. - Or is there a universal pre-processing stage Apple implements when such audio files are submitted to iTunes? So far I have only found a utility set that allows conversion from **.wav** files to **.mp4** by iTunes. Would be nice to know what these conditions these droplet files and scripts provide, specification-wise. The Mastering Suite (Apple)
