I have a rooted (Magisk) Fairphone 5 running the Fairphone ROM. I installed F-Droid using adb. I cannot update F-Droid itself from with in F-Droid. From F-Droid I have tried to install OI File Manager, LinPhone, and Easter Eggs. They do not install and the only feedback I get is "package installer keeps stopping". I also downloaded the [OI File Manager apk from the github site](https://github.com/openintents/filemanager/releases) directly to my phone and tried to install it from AOSP file manager with the same results. I am allowing installing APKs from unknown sources in settings. I *am* able to install apks using
. I ran
logcat
when trying to install OI File Manager and found two possible errors:
NotificationService: Cannot find enqueued record for key: 0|org.fdroid.fdroid|1|https://f-droid.org/repo/org.openintents.filemanager_40.apk|10195
PackageParser: Unknown element under : meta-data at /data/user/0/org.fdroid.fdroid/cache/apks/f-droid.org--1/org.openintents.filemanager_40.apk Binary XML file line #63
I have also installed [SAI](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aefyr.sai.fdroid/) which gives more detailed error messages and it says "Can't install packages while in secure FRP" But since it is happening with different APKs, I am not sure how to proceed to fix this.

How to get an older version of an app from F-Droid?
I used https://f-droid.org/ to search the F-Droid repository for an app and to download the respective APK file. I did find the app, however, the newest version has unwanted changes or requirements like a newer Android system version. How can I download the previous/older versions of this app?

FreeOTP or FreeOTP+ - Which is More Secure?

I have been using FreeOTP by Redhat/Fedora for a few years now as my main two way authentication app. However, I have realised that the current version (1.5) is quite a few years old (having been released in 2016). https://freeotp.github.io/ https://f-droid.org/packages/org.fedorahosted.freeotp/ There is however a forked version; FreeOTP+. This fork's latest update (1.7) came out in December of 2019, making it far more up to date than the upstream app. https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.liberty.android.freeotpplus/ I am however concerned about security, due to the app playing a very important role in account security. I am also unsure as I am not too familiar with the work/trustworthiness of the developer of the fork (I mean him/her no offence when I say this, I'm just cautious when it comes to account security), where as I know Redhat to be a secure and freedom respecting company. So which would be the safer option? Should I stick with the older FreeOTP? Do two way authentication apps need to have up to date security patches? Or can I trust the more up to date FreeOTP+? Also, even though I appreciate the help and good intentions of people who would recommend this; but please don't recommend that I use the Google or Microsoft authenticators instead. I want to use a Free/Open Source authentication app rather than a proprietary one.

I am considering setting up fully managed Android devices at work, and I am also quite fond of the idea of using open-source apps. However, installing F-Droid and giving the users the privileges to install apps somehow defeats the purpose and premise of the devices being fully managed.

My question follows the discussion under link How to get an older version of an app from F-Droid? but the moderator unfortunately does not allow to ask for additional details in the same thread. So my question is the following: I have installed a newer version of an app in F-droid to find out it becomes unusable because of bugs. Naturally I want to revert to the previous version. I pertinently know the older version can be seen in the versions section at the bottom. But I cannot install any of them unless I uninstall the current version of the app. This unfortunately results in loosing all settings. How can I rollback an app from F-droid without loosing settings?

Why do I have Termux and Termux(failsafe)?
Why do I have two Termux applications, and what's the difference? This happened recently, after updating Termux I believe. I've installed Termux from F-Droid, and it mentions (failsafe) in the application name there. Cannnot see that in the Play Store.

F-Droid keeps downloading apps that were installed from other stores
F-Droid, again and again, downloads updates for an app that is installed via another (namely Play) store. Obviously, it cannot be installed because of different signatures. How can I get F-Droid to ignore foreign-store apps?

Historically, Google did not mess with Android apps installed via the open source F-Droid project . Suddenly, however, Google's Play Store is now trying to update apps installed via F-Droid. There are obvious privacy implications (Google is now likely aware of which F-Droid apps you have installed), but also significant security implications (F-Droid has a stellar security reputation, whereas Google has a deplorable security reputation). Given that, to my knowledge, Google's Play Store does not obtain files from F-Droid repositories, it stands to reason that it likely overrides F-Droid's APK trusted files with Google's untrusted APK files during any updates. Can anyone confirm this hypothesis and shed any light on why Google's Play Store is suddenly trying to update apps installed that the user installed via F-Droid?

I use CyanogenMod 10; and I have root access. I don't like allowing packages from "unknown sources" for this. Can I set up the system so that f-droid counts as a known source, and packages from all other unknown sources are not allowed to be installed by default as before. Perhaps, something can be patches in the CyanogenMod distro to add f-droid's key as a key for a "known source" of packages.

I’m trying to add the [F-Droid Privileged Extension](https://gitlab.com/fdroid/privileged-extension) using the OTA .zip to a [Fairphone 3](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairphone_3) on which I’ve [installed /e/ OS](https://doc.e.foundation/devices/FP3/) . I tried modifying the update-binary script because the [mount points assumed in the script don’t quite seem to work on this device](https://gitlab.com/fdroid/privileged-extension/-/issues/69) , but although the files seem to be copied fine to the system partition(s) in recovery mode, when I reboot the phone, all the changes have disappeared. Is there anything else I need to do so that files copied to /dev/block/by-name/system_a or /dev/block/by-name/system_b in recovery mode stay around?

How do I set the time on Android, including setting the seconds? I have an android handset that has no SIM, is permanently on airplane mode, and therefore doesn't sync its time from cell towers. I use TOTP 2FA for many of my accounts, and sometimes the clock on my Android isn't precise enough to produce a valid OTP token. Therefore, I'd like to set the time manually, and TOTP would greatly benefit from being able to set the seconds as well. Unfortunately, it appears that the default "Settings -> System -> Date & Time -> Set time" route only permits me to set the hour & minute. First, when I set the time with only the hour & minute per above, does the seconds field get set to 0? Or does the seconds field remain unchanged from before setting the updated time? Second, how can I set the seconds in addition to the hour & minute? Bonus points for an answer that includes a GUI app from f-droid. The CLI works, but it's not exactly accessible to most.. Is there no app in f-droid that supports setting the time with seconds? I used to use NTPSync , but now it appears to not actually change the time after a successful ntp query. fwiw, I'm using LineageOS and Android 9.

When I am willing to create a new contact I could not create the contact and the system says

As I think, the problem was "contact storage application was uninstalled". I have downloaded below application to install the contact storage application. I could not installed and the error was
The package conflicts with an existing package by the same name
I can restore the device to get my system apps but I can't restore since I have some other issues. Is there any way to get my system apps back. Do I have any method to save contacts without contact storage apk?

I'm basically worried that I'd be hurting VLC's exposure by not adding to their download numbers in the playstore with no real advantage for me or VLC or FOSS in general. I'm explicitly asking if I know an app is FOSS and ensure the author's the right one, why not download from the playstore?
