Android 7.1.1 Nexus 6P uses VPN app from Private Internet Access. The app has a "Per App Setting" that allows certain apps to bypass the VPN connection (some games like Pokemon Go don't operate if behind a VPN, you get an 'unable to authenticate' error until you disable VPN or turn off PG in the per app settings).
My son has my old Moto X phone (no SIM card) and needs to be tethered to my phone to have Wi-Fi when we're out and about. He does not have the PIA app installed on his phone.
**PROBLEM**
-----------
When he plays his Pokemon Go game, and we are tethered while my VPN app is operating, he cannot log in or authenticate with his game on his phone. I'll need to turn off my VPN completely before his app will allow him to log and play.
**QUESTION**
-----------
Is there an Android System Process that I can allow to bypass the VPN so that his tethered Wi-Fi connection isn't blocked?

Using Apps2SD Pro app on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005, Resurrection Remix Nougat v5.8.5 with Magisk v17.1.
I lose the linked apps again & again after reboot. This happened several times already.
I tried all mounting script types, including the advanced one, but after several reboots, the linked apps are disappearing (errors attached). See the Storage screenshot, where you can see the sdext2 (labelled as EXT4) mounted by system, instead by Apps2SD.
The problem is that the sdext2 partition is mounted earlier than the Apps2SD is started and initialized, so Apps2SD can not mount the sdext2 partition, thus the system loses the installed linked apps.
How can I make Apps2SD started before sdext2 partition is mounted by the Resurrection Remix system?

I use my phone (a OnePlus 3 running the stock ROM and Android 7.1.1) as my primary internet connection. This means that I make heavy use of wireless tethering, especially for work. The trouble is, whenever my phone rings, regardless of whether I answer it, wireless tethering gets disabled. If I use USB tethering, I have no such problem, but wireless is much more convenient.
I previously came across [this answer](https://android.stackexchange.com/a/112419/14562) , but it doesn't apply to me. I've never had a phone that was unable to simultaneously use phone and data. When I'm on a call, I can enable wireless tethering with no problem. It just gets disabled for no good reason whenever I receive a call.
Note that the issue is _not_ the connection technology (WCDMA, VoLTE, carrier support, etc.) This is absolutely impossible, since the fact mentioned above that I can manually re-enable tethering while on a call, coupled with the fact that I have full access to data while on a call, disproves any such theories. This is why I started a new thread instead of using the old one I linked to above.
**Is there any way to prevent wireless from being disabled?** Failing my first question, **I would also accept a method to make my phone completely ignore incoming calls during specified times so that they couldn't disable tethering, so long as I kept internet access and text messaging.**

I have rooted Redmi 4x (santoni) with installed Lineage-14.1 (Nougat, kernel is 3.18.140-Loup) and mediatek mt7601u wifi adapter. Last week was spent to connect this adapter to use with Nethunter, but I still have no success. The kernel source doesn't contain driver for this adapter. There is working kernel with the driver, but it's made for android 11 and 10 (installing on android 7 causes bootloop). I don't want to change my ROM.
I tried using driver from the linked kernel and from the linux repository, but they are incompatible with my kernel (compilation terminated). I also tried compiling kernel module from the repository . This module does nothing, no matter if there is firmware in /etc/wireless.
Expected: new wireless interface ra0 or wlan1 after connecting the device via OTG. Reality: only power supply and some strings about the device in dmesg(pid, vid, manufacturer, etc).
How to add the mt7601u driver in android kernel 3.18.140?

Since recently the phone i have been using for about 2.5 years has developed an issue with it's audio and video codecs.
Videos won't play in the Google Chrome app, in the YouTube app, not in Whatsapp or Telegram either. Downloaded videos won't play from the gallery except when i use VLC app (Which is known for having it's own codecs bundled).
Audio won't play either, i don't hear a ringtone when i am being called, when i set an alarm for in the morning it goes off but only vibrates (no sound), and music players either don't play the song or skip through all the songs at a fast pace.
I am not debugging something i wrote, this is my phone's system failing on it's own. I tried to unlock the bootloader 2 years ago but never got any kind of special access to the system. I also didn't get any updates on the system since i bought the phone sadly.
I used ADB to get the error logs from me setting an alarm with default ringtone, and it confirms a codec error like i suspected (vorbis codec this time, but other codecs also have the same issue):

This goes beyond what i know about Android system, but a full reboot seems to fix the issue temporarily but this is not a good way to make sure your alarm goes off several hours later..
I pasted the full ADB log in a pastebin for those interested.
What can i do except do a hard reset or buy a new phone?

I have very little experience with Android, or any other mobile device operating system.
I'm accustom to using Linux operating systems, where any time there is an update I can typically upgrade to the very latest version of the operating system without any roadblocks.
I have Galaxy Tab A (Model SM-T550) tablet, that I've barely used the entire time I've had it, and I'm wanting to give it to my Godson as a gift. Before giving it so him, I wanted to upgrade it to the latest Android OS, so that he wouldn't be limited by any missing features that this tablet's older Android version might have.
In the settings menu, I found a Software update feature and tried to update. This is what it said:
The latest updates have already been installed:
Current version: T550XXU1CQJ6/T550XAR1CQJ6/
When I go to "About Tablet", I see that this device has Android 7.1.1 installed and I read somewhere that Android version 10 was released in 2019.
Is this the type of support that I can expect from Samsung when buying one of their Android devices? If so, this will be the last dollar they'll get from me.
Is there any way to upgrade this Galaxy Tab A (Model SM-T550) to the latest Android, or at least a later version than 7.1.1?
I'm very technically savvy on laptops and PCs, if you could direct me to a thorough guide, where someone has accomplished this, I could probably pull it off, its just that I've never really tried to do anything like this with tablets or mobile phones.
Please advise me. Also, if this isn't doable, and I wanted to buy him a new tablet, which brand would be the best about always allowing upgrades to the latest Android? If there's a brand that does that, that will be the only brand I'll buy in the future.

According to a well-regarded QA answer by a member of our Android community here on Stack Exchange:
> By the current schedule, Let's Encrypt cross signing will end on September the 30th 2024. After this date Android 7.1 stock devices will become more or less useless for Internet surfing as all Let's encrypt based certificates will be considered untrusted and the connection will not be established.
Has this schedule changed? I haven't seen any announcement of a change, but I've noticed that affected devices suddenly have certificate validation failures when trying to connect to many internet hosts. The problem seems to stem from Let's Encrypt
R3
, which is affected by the changes that were supposed to be effective much later this year.
Is there any documentation as to why these devices are being affected earlier than planned? Are there any workarounds for non-rooted devices?

I assumed that having newer phone = _newer or at least the same_ system version. I'd never expect newer phone having older system version than its one year older predecessor. What am I missing?

I've just bought a new Android phone (Wileyfox Swift 2X) and updated to Android 7.1.2.
Up until now I have always saved my contacts to my SIM card, which saved me a great deal of trouble with past Android phones that had broken screens, as I only had to insert my SIM card in a new device and voila, all my contacts are there.
However, on Android 7.1.2, I am unable to view SIM contacts or save new contacts to the SIM card. My only option is a Gmail account (linked to the device) - which is not what I want. I am even unable to save new contacts to the device itself.
In the 'Contacts' app, the 'Contacts to display' menu item has 3 options:
- WhatsApp
- Google (....@gmail.com)
- Customize (no SIM options here either)
I'm pretty sure that in all my Android phones up until now I had a 'device' and 'SIM' option.
In the 'Contacts' app, I do have the option to import/export:
- Import from .vcf file
- Import from SIM card
- Export to SIM card
- Export to .vcf file
- Share all contacts
So for now, I imported my SIM contacts (to the GMail account), so I can use my device for now. However, I want to only store my contacts on the SIM card.
----------
I've checked out some apps in the Google Play Store that read the SIM contacts and they work fine (although with ads) so this is not ideal.
Did they remove the SIM contacts option? Is there a way to enable it?
Thanks in advance!

Every time I use the share feature to share a photo in Android 7.1.1, it suggests people who are not in my contacts and contacts I have not spoken to in years. My phone can't be rooted and the suggestions I've found, such as disabling direct share, do not seem to be available in recent versions of Android. I don't want to share photos to so unsubscribe@spam.com email I used once or to some person I'm not in contact with.
How do I remove share suggestions or disable them entirely? I would rather just choose the app to share with and then select the recipient from within the app.
Edit: I've also found that older versions of Android had a feature to long-press and drag suggested share items to pin them to the top pf the menu. This no longer appears to work either. Please help get these people off my share menu.

I'm trying to set up a nice little Android 7.1 system to attach to my TV using an HDMI cable, though I'm having a bit of trouble with the resolution. I'm getting a black border around the screen.
This is what the laptop screen looks like without any black border
I've plugged in another laptop that has Windows installed and noted down the resolution which is 1280x768. I've also found the corresponding VGA values both 16 and 32. 1280x768x16 =
I've typed scan to get the video modes available, but there are no resolutions that match the aspect ratio of my screen. I've tested the ones listed, but they still either don't take up the whole screen or match the aspect ratio.
The below image shows a list of codes that I have found.
The laptop I'm running this on is pretty old, but with Windows or any of the other Linux distros, I've found I have no problem.
System Specs
Is there any way of getting around this? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

888
and 1280x768x32 = 889

When I add either of these to the menu.lst
file, I get a message on boot stating that I'm using an undefined video number.

I found a note that suggested clearing either the cache or the data for the app. I chose to clear the data, and now Launcher3 won't let me place app icons on the main screens. I have to find them on the app list, and a long press shows a series of information buttons on the app instead of letting me place it on a screen. Rebooting to safe mode didn't help.
Any suggestions for (a) fixing this, or (b) getting a new launcher? I tried Evie Launcher and Smart Launcher 3 and didn't like either.

Well, simple. I want to downgrade an app that has been accidentally updated. I've already read [this question](/q/116309) but it didn't provide me with a straight instruction. I have the APK I want to downgrade **to** so that question is unhelpful to me. It's not a test package (saved from Google Play) so option
-t
doesn't make sense.
Things I've tried so far:
* Run in a terminal (with root)
pm install -r -d old.apk* Use adb on a computer
adb install -r -d /path/to/old.apk* Brutally replace the apk in
/data/app
and manually run dex2oat
to force compile it
All of above were to no avail. So I'm quite bothered about this.
I don't want an answer telling me **uninstall the new app, then install the old one**. I want to retain app data without backing up.

Some of my more secure applications offer fingerprint unlocking. This would be convenient to use, and I don't foresee any security issues with someone using my fingerprint because I would have had to have unlocked the phone with a pattern for someone to gain access to the application.
On the other hand, if the phone can be unlocked with my fingerprint as well, someone could unlock it while I am incapacitated (e.g. sleeping) without my knowledge, and then unlock the high-security applications as well. Having a pattern is a great form of two-factor authentication IMO.
I added a fingerprint to my rooted phone which runs LineageOS 14.1, Android version 7.1.1 -- this automatically allowed unlocking the phone via fingerprint. I cannot find a setting to disable this without removing the fingerprint and being unable to use it in any of my apps. Is there any way I can forcefully disable fingerprint authentication on the lock screen, but retain access to fingerprint unlocking for various apps without using a custom lock screen?
Here are the options I have for the lock screen and fingerprints -- I do not see any way to disable fingerprint authentication without removing the fingerprint, from the settings at least:

Recently, about 4 weeks ago, the volume on my microphone became too low for listeners. I can hear them perfectly though.
I found somewhere on the internet (I can't remember where) that if I clear the system cache (see below), then the volume returns to normal. Which it did.
It's happened again though. So I've cleared the cache again and again the microphone volume has returned to normal.
Is there a way around this? It looks like its a software fault rather than a hardware fault.
These are the instructions I followed to wipe the cache:
* Power off the phone
* Hold down power and the volume down button
* Use the volme up/down to select "Recovery mode" and press power button
* When "No command" is displayed, hold down power and press volume up.
* Select wipe cache
* Restart
Currently on 7.1.1
