I've been using the Resolution Changer app to set my screen resolution, as I find it makes a huge difference in screen real estate and aesthetics. But a couple of apps don't seem to like it (menus appear strange, some text not displayed at all etc).
Is there a way (app, setting etc) to make it so that specific apps run on specific resolutions or at least, a screen resolution/density changer that lets you choose apps on which to ignore that setting?
My goal is to be able to have a specific resolution set for certain apps and have others display in the original resolution my phone has in its factory setting.
I'm hoping that's possible as I remember running custom ROMs on previous Android phones I've had that had different resolutions for some applications.

Can't change screen resolution of Android-x86_64 installed in UEFI mode

I previously used

Now I downloaded and installed Android-x86_64 (CyanogenMod 13), in QEMU, in UEFI mode, to a GPT partition, and the option doesn't seem to work anymore. Instead it outputs:
> error: invalid file name 'vga=ask'
There doesn't appear to be much information about this elsewhere. But I could find:
- What happened to vga=ask
in newer kernels? (Unix.SE)
- Grub: Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported (Superuser)
- android-x86_64-5.1-rc1.img --- change resolution (Android-x86 at Google Groups)
I tried wm size 1280x720
(in terminal emulator as root) and it *kind of* works. the resolution appears to change, but the display area doesn't and it becomes a pain to read anything. So I had it reverted with wm size reset
.
I also tried UVESA_MODE=1280x720
and it also reports "invalid filename 'UVESA_MODE'".
There's a proposed solution at the 3rd url (debug.drm.mode.force 1280x720
) but it also didn't work.
So, how to change the screen resolution properly?
**[Update]** I tested with a new, non-UEFI installation and the vga
kernel option works there.

I'm working with an InForce 6540 board that has 5.0.2 Lollipop installed.
I am trying to connect a display device that has a max resolution of 720p at 60hz. I am using a micro HDMI connection.
The 6540 detects the display as a 1080p dislplay and uses that resolution.
I tried to change the resolution with adb root.
-----------------------------------------
adb shell cat /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb1/edid_modes
( to check which modes the display device supports)
adb shell setprop hw.hdmi.resolution 13
(or other supported number, checked the .cpp file to see what each number means for resolution.)
adb shell stop
adb shell start
-------------------------------------------
This did not work, and I tried it on a different display device that supports more resolutions, and it did not work either.
I have also tried the command
wm
, but that only resizes the amount of screen it is currently using. (It scales versus changing actual display resolution)
My display shows static on the bottom half, and on the top, it shows the whole display but cut. The right side of the display is cut and displayed on the left with everything shifted to the right.
Any help would be appreciated. I know this is not a normal problem.

I have been regularly using a Mackie DL1608 digital mixer lately, and am a bit frustrated by the fact that I cannot get the full functionality of their Master Fader 5 app on my phone. When doing something more serious I usually use a tablet, but there are times, when it would be more convenient to be able to access the full UI from my phone.
So far I have tried:
- Adjusting the
Smallest width
value in developer options
- Modifying the ro.sf.lcd_density
prop
- Setting the resolution / DPI through App Settings Reborn
But none of these have worked. The UI gets smaller (more channels visible at the same time), but doesn't show the missing controls. I have also tried setting the display size of a tablet in the opposite direction, and interestingly enough, that triggered the switch to the phone layout. Does anyone know of other methods that are used to tell phones and tablets apart in apps, and maybe methods to fool them? One more thing I noticed is that the Play Store only shows screenshots of the mobile layout when I'm viewing it from my phone. 🤔

_Edit: For future reference, in case anyone finds this post, who is in a similar situation, I am also considering using Mixing Station
as an alternative, as well as reverse engineering the protocol myself._

Is there a way I can override the device screen dimensions in some config file somewhere so the system does not know about the 10-20 rows of pixels at the bottom? (So I don't have to cut the plastic bezel, which will surely turn out horrible.)

In short: I used SecondScreen app and changed the screen resolution to a bad one. The app autostarts and changes my resolution automatically. This causes a boot loop. What can I do?
In detail:
This is what I did on my non-rooted Poco F1:
1. installed Second Screen
2. I gave it the permissions it needed, using ADB via my PC, and other permissions it asked via UI .
3. I chose some big resolution.
4. I shut down the PC, before disconnecting the phone from PC.
5. The phone was stuck in the weird resolution, so I restarted it.
6. it is now in an infinite boot loop. :(
It starts booting normally, but than the screen resolution becomes bad (see the photo), and, before finishing the booting, it restarts again :(
At last, the recovery menu is reached and it gives me 3 options.
1. Reboot (this is the restarting loop that brings me back to the same menu)
2. Access via MI PC Suite: I cannot access the device this way; the device is not detected. It never sees the device, except in Fastboot it says: "Try connect in normal mode first then switch", but I cannot enter "normal" mode.
3. Wipe the data (if at all possible, I would prefer to avoid losing the data).
What I know:
Codename: beryllium
Bootloader: locked
Anti version: 1
I can get my phone into
FASTBOOT
and adb sideload
modes, but unfortunately not in the "normal" adb mode. Can I uninstall the app somehow, stop it from autostart, undo its damage, or anything to fix the phone without losing the data?
A non boot-loop fix was done by typing:
From adb shell, type:
wm size reset
wm density reset
but I cannot find out how to do that from FASTBOOT or sideload....

I am trying to change the aspect ratio of my phone's screen, presumably by changing the resolution, to achieve the result shown in the image.
I am not trying to just change the resolution without changing the screen size as you would with an app such as 'nomone resolution changer'
I am not trying to hide the top and bottom of the screen as you would with an app such as 'notch hider'
I am not trying to just move the icons on screen as you would with 'adb overscan'
I want the device to behave as if those areas of the screen are not there at all, so they just stay black all the time
I know this will require root so bring on the root solutions
Thanks in advance

I'm trying to set up a nice little Android 7.1 system to attach to my TV using an HDMI cable, though I'm having a bit of trouble with the resolution. I'm getting a black border around the screen.
This is what the laptop screen looks like without any black border
I've plugged in another laptop that has Windows installed and noted down the resolution which is 1280x768. I've also found the corresponding VGA values both 16 and 32. 1280x768x16 =
I've typed scan to get the video modes available, but there are no resolutions that match the aspect ratio of my screen. I've tested the ones listed, but they still either don't take up the whole screen or match the aspect ratio.
The below image shows a list of codes that I have found.
The laptop I'm running this on is pretty old, but with Windows or any of the other Linux distros, I've found I have no problem.
System Specs
Is there any way of getting around this? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

888
and 1280x768x32 = 889
.
When I add either of these to the menu.lst
file, I get a message on boot stating that I'm using an undefined video number.

I have 64-bit Android 7.1.2, obtained from android-x86_64-7.1-rc1.iso . I installed it on VirtualBox (latest version, 5.1.2.8) with UEFI mode. (The host is 64-bit Linux Lubuntu 16.04.)
The installation all works fine apart from the fact that the screen is fixed at 1024×768. The various sizes given in the VirtualBox menu > View > Virtual Screen 1, which range from 640×480 to 1920×1200, are all greyed out.
I would like to be able to resize the Android screen, making it both smaller and larger, and even full-screen if possible. Sadly, the usual method, Guest Additions, isn't supported on Android.
I've tried following various instructions. The vast majority seem to be valid only for non-UEFI installations, although I tried them anyway. The only one for UEFI that I found doesn't work for me.
The methods that I have found include:
- Issue the command:
(this obviously would work only for that one resolution). - Adding various commands to Grub, either at boot or permanently in
vboxmanage setextradata Android CustomVideoMode1 1152x864x32
(this obviously would work only for that one resolution). - Adding various commands to Grub, either at boot or permanently in
EFI/boot/grub/grub.cfg
:
* set gfxpayload=keep
* set gfxpayload=1152x864x32
* vga=ask
* vga=834
I am at a total loss how to proceed. Can you help, please?

I am a complete noob with Android so please forgive me.
I am tasked with installing Android on a Custom Board from China. Its InsydeH20 BIOS and something called "BayTrail".
Basically, the board is installed inside a Hand Dryer (dont ask). The concept is to install an APP (which is already available), that links to a website, users can play Advertisements through the screen by creating them on the website, the playlist syncs to the app, voila ads play on the Android Board, nifty concept, in reality its a nightmare to get working.
I have tried numerous versions of Android, the App best works on 4.4 but I have it working on 7.1 Nougat.
The main issues I have are:
Teamviewer Host (needs to be installed for future support of the units. This, I have only got working on 1 version of Android (Prime OS)
Screen Orientation - this is my main issue, the screen is 1080x1920 resolution. using a screen rotation app (on Phoenix OS v1.5.0) I can get the screen to display in LANDSCAPE at 1920x108 - great, App works, screen is landscape, Teamviewer DOES NOT work, bummer!
On Prime OS - the rotation app just does not work, it sort of goes in landscape, but in portrait view? The screen is 1080x1920 across the MIDDLE of the screen, with black bars at the top and bottom. Please see this link for screen shot.
But TeamViewer works, and the unit seems more stable on Prime OS, so I think once I have the screen sorted, it will work fine, hopefully?
Things I have already tried.
**ADB Build Prop adding these lines, and rebooting - does absolutely nothing!**
ro.sf.hwrotation=0
**ADB Shell - adding these lines**

`
1. adb shell root
2. adb shell remount
3. adb shell setprop persist.demo.hdmirotation portrait
4. adb shell setprop persist.demo.hdmirotationlock false
5. adb shell setprop persist.demo.singledisplay true
6. adb reboot
7. adb shell wm size 1920x1080
`
This is how I have got it to where it is now, but the thing will just not rotate and use LANDSCAPE and FULL SCREEN, like it does on Phoenix OS.
Sorry, if I have repeated myself, hopefully the screen shot will give you a better idea of where I am at, what I need.
And hopefully someone can help?
Currently running Prime OS Standard at this link -

I'm running Android TV on Lineage OS, on a Raspberry Pi 4. After changing the resolution setting, the connected display (a TV) no longer displays anything but the message "Video Format not supported".
How can I change the resolution setting back/reset it?
I have SSH enabled, but I don't know the default user/password for Lineage. USB debugging is disabled - otherwise I would have done this in ADB.
I've already done numerous searches on the Internet but can't find anything relevant. Will I just have to reflash and start again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
