Every time I restart my Xolo Era 4g, Android 5 Lollipop phone, it auto enables "allow installation of apps from unknown sources" option. I switch it off manually, then in a few seconds, a pop-up for an unknown app to install shows, and on the background, the "unknown sources" button automatically toggles. This keeps on going forever. I haven't rooted my phone and have factory reset it many times.
I first installed an antimalware app, and when I run it, it found around 16 malware, of which I deleted 14 but there was no option to delete the last two. Then I installed the notification app. I restarted my phone. After that, the internet automatically started. I immediately switched it off. Then I went to settings and switched off to allow unknown apps installation.
Then I opened the menu and slide it a few times and the malware attacked again. Opening the settings disclosed that an unknown app installation is switched on. Many apps are promoted for installation. After pressing cancel around 50 times, I went to the menu again and many new apps were installed. I have repeated this scenario two times once I switched the internet on. But with the internet off, I saw an app installation prompt too. I don't remember with the internet off whether the apps got actually installed or not.
Now I opened the notification app and it showed one process having some text similar to _Andriod UI Lollipop 5.0_, it had a Lollipop icon to its left. On clicking on that, it further showed one process. The process was related to the notification app itself and had text "toaster" or maybe "toasted". Now I have factory reset my phone again and have uninstalled all default apps like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Paytm, UC browser, etc. Now if I'll again restart my phone, the virus will start again.
Please tell a method to not allow any app to toggle the "unknown sources" options on without rooting the phone.

How do I re-odex a modified system app for Samsung Galaxy Alpha?

Following my previous question on how to make the weather widget work again on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha, I have researched about app reverse engineering including Java and Smali as suggested by the answer there.
By following this tutorial , I was able to get to the Smali code, make a slight modification to it which I hope will resolve the
javax.net.ssl.SSLException: hostname in certificate didn't match
error I was getting, and then get to my modified and deodexed .apk
. Essentially, the command I executed were:
7za x WeatherDaemon2014_LMR.odex.xz
oat2dex.bat WeatherDaemon2014_LMR.odex temp.dex
java -jar baksmali-2.0.3.jar -a 21 -x temp.dex -o deodex
At this point, I edited the \deodex\com\sec\android\daemonapp\ap\http\HttpClientThread.smali
file. Then I executed the below, which gave me the deodexed .apk
:
java -jar smali-2.0.3.jar -a 21 deodex -o classes.dex
7za u -tzip WeatherDaemon2014_LMR.apk classes.dex
I am however unfortunately getting a Class not found when unmarshalling: com.android.packageinstaller.InstallFlowAnalytics
error when trying to install the modified APK. I have also tried uninstalling this system widget first with Titanium Backup, but the issue remains the same. (This actually corrupted the widget which couldn't be restored, and I had to re-flash the stock ROM to get back to the starting point.)
Therefore rather than trying to install the APK, my goal is now to directly replace the WeatherDaemon2014_LMR.odex.xz
file located in /system/app/WeatherDaemon2014_LMR/arm/
, hence my question of how I could re-odex my APK. I have tried to follow this tutorial but am getting a only position independent executables (PIE) are supported
error in step 6. Then I tried the solution here , but am getting the same error in step 5. Researching this error leads to suggestions to compile with the -fPIE
option enabled, but I am unsure how and where to do this.
Can anyone familiar with app reverse engineering suggest a way forward? Is there a simple way I can get to a .odex.xz
file from my modified APK? Apologies if I'm missing something obvious, or if anything I said above isn't making sense, as I am still new to reverse engineering.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone running on Android 5.0. At home and in the office, when I'm connected to a WiFi network and the screen is locked (sleep), WhatsApp doesn't receive any messages until I unlock the screen. I don't use so many apps so I can't confirm if this is the case with other applications or not, however, I might have experienced the same problem with the email app as well.
I have observed my phone behavior and noted that other applications (e.g., hangouts) show act the same. Furthermore, I noted another fact that might shed some light: Say, I unlock my screen and after several seconds my apps start to notify me about some messages. But the time-stamp of these messages aren't for this moment but rather [e.g.] half an hour ago when they were supposed to be delivered.
"Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" is set to "Always", I don't have any power management application or any particular settings. I checked WhatsApp FAQ and they suggested checking priority notification, which I don't use. Searching the web suggests clearing cache and data which doesn't solve the problem. I have cleared the cache/data files, updated the app, etc. I would highly applicate if you submit answers that do not suggest these generic (and almost always non-functional) workarounds.
Any workaround?

How can I make the AccuWeather widget app work again on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha?

The integrated weather widget (AccuweatherPhone2014_S_LMR_HD.apk) stopped showing up-to-date weather data on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha (SM-G850F) when I had to update it from Android 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 a while ago.
I have tried deleting cache and data, but all it did is erase the cities I have saved there, and which I am not able to get back. Now it reads "Tap here to add a city" and when I do this it keeps saying "location error" or "network connexion error":
I get the following error message in the LogCat:
My first step would be to at least get the cities and clock back in the widget, and then if possible resume the weather feed.
My questions would be:
1. Does anyone know what is causing this error above? (Why would it expect "a248eakamainet" or a variant of it as the host name?)
2. How can I can potentially resolve it myself (e.g. by using a proxy or installing a certificate)?
3. Failing this, is there a way I can set the city myself by amending the files in there manually, such that at least the clock works (summer time icon etc.) and the city name shows?
Not sure if it helps but the file structure in the widget folder is as below:

ADVHTTP IOException javaxnetsslSSLException: hostname in certificate didn't match: != OR OR OR OR OR
javax.net.ssl.SSLException: hostname in certificate didn't match: != OR OR OR OR OR
Note that this is the same error as when I still had the city data and tried to refresh the weather.

/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/cache/com.android.opengl.shaders_cache
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/databases/WeatherClock
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/databases/WeatherClock-journal
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/databases/worldcity.db
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/databases/worldcity.db-journal
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/databases/files/rList-com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather.menu.MenuAdd
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/shared_prefs/config.xml
/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather/shared_prefs/pref_widget_count.xml
(I was able to explore the worldcity.db database using DB Browser and can see all cities data are there.)
I am not a developer but have some knowledge in programming, my phone is rooted and I am somewhat familiar with running commands via ADB (I recently managed to solve a keyboard language issue myself by extracting files from a stock ROM ). My phone can access the Internet without any issues, both via WiFi and mobile data.
Things I have tried so far to no avail:
- Delete cache and data of the weather app.
- Update the weather app (version stayed at 150901.800410 despite the "App installed" message).
- Manually update the certificates in my phone by following steps described here .
- Contact AccuWeather support, their reply was that "The preinstalled application on your phone was developed by a 3rd party manufacturer, with AccuWeather supplying the underlying weather data. The manufacturer is responsible for databasing, displaying, and formatting this data, as well as ensuring it is up-to-date and cached properly.". I did not contact Samsung this time as they were unable to help with the keyboard language issue I had previously.
(At this point this is probably obvious, but I thought I would also mention that I am not interested in alternative weather widgets. I am also well aware that this is an old unsupported phone, but there are personal reasons why I want to make it work. I see this as a personal challenge.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My HTC One M7 phone is S-OFF, has the latest firmware 7.19.401.2, and has nicely installed "ViperOne+9.0.0-fix", the recovery is TWRP 2.8.6.0. Everything works very well, except that the proximity sensor seems erratic, and when I have a call the ear seems to press different programs on the touchscreen. I would like to return to complete HTC stock ROM so that I assure myself the proximity sensor works well enough (or does not).
Do I have to downgrade the firmware to be able to install the stock ROM?
I have downloaded the stock ROM
PN07IMG_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_7.19.401.2_Radio_4T.35.3218.16_10.33Q.1718.01L_release_421790_signed.zip
but seem to be unable to install from TWRP.
Or maybe the only way is via fastboot? With the commands:
1) htc_fastboot oem rebootRUU
2) htc_fastboot flash zip RUU.zip
3) htc_fastboot reboot-bootloader
Can someone more experienced give some advice, please?

According to xda wiki "The recovery is completely independent of the Android system". Does it mean that, No matter which version of Android I have, the recovery of any version should work. If recovery is independent of android then why does that recovery not working. I am confused.

I also saw a similar question here, but this is the AT&T version, not Verizon:

Towelroot doesn't work (just tried) and the SM-G900V isn't listed here: https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
Anyone have any experience with this?

While in Discord on Android 5.0, Hacker Keyboard puts an emoji button instead of enter, putting enter to be accessed only by going to the special buttons(numbers and the sorts). I have to note that the keyboard is used in portrait mode with "4-row Gingerbread layout" for which I need an answer, 5 rows has the enter in its place.
My question is, is there a way to disable the emoji button and put the enter where it belongs without going to the special characters? Going through the settings I could not notice any option that would help me do so.
Thanks in advance.

Is this not possible with just the "guest" user? Do I have to create a new user for that? Are there any drawbacks to having such a "hard guest" account for this purpose on a device? Like a considerable CPU/battery/memory impact?
If relevant, I have Nexus 7 (2013) on Android 5.0.1.

I am creating a Wifi hotspot with hostapd and providing DHCP/DNS through dnsmasq on an Android 5.0.1 device. When a client connects to the Wifi hotspot it is subsequently unable to obtain an IP address through DHCP. The dnsmasq server claims to send a DHCP ACK response but no packet is seen in wireshark.

I cannot understand why the host is sending ARP requests for the offered IP address instead of sending the DHCP ACK. Can anyone help me understand what I am seeing and how it can be fixed? Thanks.

I've gotten an abandoned Samsung Galaxy Note SM-P900 tablet, which is supposed to go to charity. Unfortunately, it sports an Android 5.0.1, a lot of APKs don't install, and many websites can't be accessed by Samsung's bundled browser due to not having a valid security certificate.
Can I upgrade the Android version and otherwise make the life of this device's user less miserable?
I understand there are no relevant official updates, as explained here:
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/226636/how-to-upgrade-my-android-device-to-latest-android-version
But I don't mind flashing this device, and obviously don't mind losing anything stored on it (I've already reset to factory settings anyway). I have a PC running Linux with adb installed, I have some USB cables, and I have a bit of time to spare.
----
Oh, I should mention a constraint: No use of any Google or Samsung account during this process.

I got impatient, and since restarting it brought me to the same place, I removed the battery while it was optimizing apps. Now it won’t boot thereafter.
I have tried several suggestions to no avail. When I switch to recovery mode, it displays “no command” on a blank screen after “input language=> English” after choosing the language.
How to fix it?

i have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, running Android 5.0.2
I'm looking for a soluton to the following issue:
All of my family is using the tablet.
So i set up accounts for an admin, and personal accounts for me and my wife, linked to our Google email adresses.
I also set up restricted accounts for the kids. (They are not linked to any email as i remember)
Now one of the kids plays Clash of Clans. Game has been installed on the admin account, and authorization given so it can be used on the kids' restricted account.
It would be cool if the kids could use Google Play to save his game progress online.
But i'm struggling to find out how to set this up.
Currently, Google Play is installed and given access to the kid account.
From kid's account, i can launch Google Play, then launch CoC.
But the button "Google Play Sign In" in CoC does nothing. (It stays red, saying disconnected).
Seems it is still not recognized.
Do i need to have an email address for the kid?
How do i link it to the restricted account?
If this doesn't work, is there any other way i can achieve this?

I have a remote control for a DJI drone, and the operating system it uses is Android Lollipop 5.1.1. It turns out that it's very limited in terms of what I can do (basically, I can only use the DJI app to control the drone). My intention is to take advantage of the Android system to install an app that would be very useful to me. The problem is that I don't have Google Play, not even a file explorer. The closest thing I have is: Settings, Storage, Downloads. Even though it says that Downloads has 10MB used, when I enter that folder, it says "No Items" (the APK is copied there). I have already enabled developer options. Does anyone have any idea how else I could install an APK? Note: I don't have a web browser, Google Play, file explorer, email; I have almost nothing except the DJI app

Get back lost picture after flashing ROM
I'm guessing I know the answer to this but still wanted to ask. I picture got deleted and I would like it back. It was taken with the stock android camera. I flashed a new ROM and that's how it got deleted. It was the picture for the Owner profile/user/account. Any way to get it back?

I know starting a new session would have deleted all data of previous guest user as it is temporary data, however is there any way I can recover those photos deleted from guest account.

My N5 is encrypted with Android 5.0. As far as I understand new mechanism, it envolves dependency on some external data taken from separate hardware component (part of encryption key). Is it guaranteed that it will not altered after I factory reset and flash Android 4.4 ? And even if it's ok, is it possible finally to restore such backup ? (May be /dev/mmcblck0 is read-only or otherwise restricted due to way hardware-accelerated encryption/decryption works.)
