What is the difference (or improvements) between the 'stock' SM-T230 model GALAXY Tab 4 7.0" and the 'newer' SM-T230NU, recently released for US/Canada and in EU?
Are there also other NU devices? I have also seen references to the GALAXY Tab 4 10.1" as SM-T530NU.
---
I have found one possible issue , with the SM-T230 *not having* multi-user mode:
> The multi users setting is not available. According to the manual it should be at settings => General => Users.
(My device does have multi-user capability)
---
I also saw a reference to the two different models on XDA Developers :
> Do make sure your tablet is a T230NU model and not just a T230
> model.
---
**UPDATE: 04-Jul-2014**
There are **three** variants: T230, T230NT, T230NU
from: Samsung T230 | T230NT | T230NU Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 WiFi Firmwares

I have two Android system users configured.
$ pm list users
Users:
UserInfo{0:Owner:13} running

UserInfo{999:XSpace:800010} running
When the mobile is running at Android 8.1, I can access the secondary user's space /storage/emulated/10
easily in adb shell
.
But after I upgrade to Android 9, I can no longer do it:
$ ls /storage/emulated/10
ls: /storage/emulated/10: Permission denied
Any ideas how I can access my second user's space in adb shell
?
Btw, my /sdcard/
always points to the first user's space /storage/emulated/0
at adb shell
regardless what my current user is at mobile UI. The adb shell
connection remains the same when I switch users at mobile UI too.
When I switch users at mobile UI level, my adb connection remains the same. And I do see the current user changes with the following command:
$ dumpsys activity | grep mCurrentUser
mCurrentUser=0
$ dumpsys activity | grep mCurrentUser
mCurrentUser=10

In today's world, getting distracted by a mobile phone has become easier than ever. I wanted to have a phone that only has calling and messaging (by SMS) features. Switching to a feature phone(keypad phone) won't solve that issue as most of them are coming with games and social media apps preinstalled. There are products like lightphone in the market that are good alternatives, but they are relatively expensive. Also a more sustainable approach would be to convert an already existing smartphone into a suitable one.
Uninstalling distracting apps or installing screen time controlling apps were not effective, I just installed or uninstalled them respectively in a few clicks. I understood that changes have to be made at the system level, in order for this to actually work. So I permanently uninstalled apps like play store and bloatware with the help of ADB. I'm having one last problem - I can just go and create a new user and continue to use the apps that came with my phone. So I tried to permanently disable this feature by following the instructions in this answer. It worked, but the problem is after rebooting, I'm able to create new users again.
Even after adding the following two lines in the **build.prop** file, the issue is persisting.
fw.max_users 1
fw.show_multiuserui 0
What's interesting is the following command gave no output despite the above 2 lines being added in the build.prop file in the system folder. I even double checked whether those lines are actually present after rebooting with the help of a file manager that has root access.
adb shell getprop fw.max_users
My question is **how do I permanently remove the feature of user addition?** If that is not possible, at the least how do I stop certain apps like play store being installed in newly created user profiles?
I'm using Mi A3 running lineage OS 22.1-20250112-UNOFFICIAL-laurel_sprout (android 15), rooted with the help of Magisk 28.1. I have installed twrp-3.3.1-17 in recovery. I use raspbery pi 4 to help me with the process.
I did all this with the help of interent and I'm basically a noob. Please help me.

I usually install several APKs necessary for my work. They are internally released, so they are not available over Google Play.
We have several users on the device, so multiple users can use their own profiles. However, after recent updates, these apps disappear from other user accounts. And it seems there is no way to install them. More annoying, one app is still visible in the other user accounts, but it cannot be opened. It flashes and then exits.
Can anyone share some experience on how to fix this problem, or maybe in Android 14, the APK-installed app cannot be used by other users by design?

DocumentsUI, the AOSP standard "file manager" is quite buggy here (I use Lineage 15.1), especially in the context of *multi-user* and *work profile* (meaning it does not show files for other users then the main user and is hence not usable).
For "simple" file browsing, I therefore substituted DocumentsUI app (
com.android.documentsui
) with com.simplemobiletools.filemanager.pro
which works much better.
My issue and the core of the question is, that the glorious "facebook" WhatsApp Manager when attempting to attach files, resorts to opening the intent specifically for com.android.documentsui
and fails even to open com.simplemobiletools.filemanager.pro
even in the case that it is the only filemanager still installed. Hence I cannot attach files in other users in Whatsapp, due to the buggy DocumentsUI and WhatsApp not being *willing/capable/well-enough-designed* to make a general "FileOpen" intent, instead of referring directly to com.android.documentsui
I understand that WhatsApp is particularly made very little IT-able persons, who do not care about privacy very much, therefore it is clear that the WhatApp is not geared to allow/accomodate for educated and more able users which might desire to use not the standard com.android.documentsui
.
An answer to this question would be to provide an insight which com.android.documentsui
would be able to integrate well with WhatsApp Messenger

Is this not possible with just the "guest" user? Do I have to create a new user for that? Are there any drawbacks to having such a "hard guest" account for this purpose on a device? Like a considerable CPU/battery/memory impact?
If relevant, I have Nexus 7 (2013) on Android 5.0.1.

I have been wondering for quite some time now; where does Android store its user and group id information?
For instance, on standard Linux, user and group information is stored in
/etc/passwd
and /etc/group
, respectively. When you add a user to a group, his or her username/uid gets added to the list of users in that group, for instance the my audio group entry in /etc/group
looks like this:
audio:x:29:pulse,edge-case
Where pulse gets mapped to the uid of the pulseaudio daemon and edge-case gets mapped to my uid (1000), on my Linux box.
As I understand it, each app that gets installed on Android gets its own uid and gid and this is the basis of the "sandboxing" of apps that occurs on Android as they all run in their own process and can't access data of another process or files owned by another app unless there are declaration in a Manifest file created by app programmers which dictates what info is to be shared to other apps and what not. This is also how apps gain or rather request access to networking services during installation by requesting to be added to the INTERNET group or something like that, don't quote me on the name of the NET net group, it might be more like INET or INET6, either way I know there are several levels of network access that can be granted to an application through this mechanism on Android.
My question is, where is this information stored in Android?
Further more, is it possible to modify?
I would like to integrate a glibc stack with it and the data within it in my /etc/{passwd,group}
files, trust me, they exist on my phone, I even have apt installed with a lot of other goodies.
Update:
Have been doing more searches and
This might be what I am looking for.
I will need to dig a bit deeper and make sure it is everything I am looking for.
Update: (5:40 June 27 2014)
Since someone thinks I don't know what I am doing or talking about, let me clarify;
User UIDs on Android are offset with 100000 and App UIDs are offset with 10000 when mapped to the user number _ app number, hence when a ps shows something like u0_a10 which means that User with UID 100000 is running app with UID 10010,
I have pulled UID and user/daemon names from system/core/include/private/android_filesystem_config.h and used those to update my /etc/passwd and /etc/group files (On my Android box), for example my /etc/passwd file (on my Android box) looks like this :
....
brainard:x:100002:100002:Professor Brainard,0420,,:/home/brainard
:/bin/bash
radio:x:1001:1001::/data/radio:/bin/false
bluetooth:x:1002:1002::/data/bluetooth:/bin/false
graphics:x:1003:1003::/home/graphics:/bin/false
input:x:1004:1004::/home/input:/bin/false
camera:x:1006:1006::/home/camera:/bin/false
log:x:1007:1007::/home/log:/bin/false
compass:x:1008:1008::/home/compass:/bin/false
mount:x:1009:1009::/home/mount:/bin/false
wifi:x:1010:1010::/home/wifi:/bin/false
adb:x:1011:1011::/home/adb:/bin/false
install:x:1012:1012::/home/install:/bin/false
media:x:1013:1013::/home/media:/bin/false
dhcp:x:1014:1014::/home/dhcp:/bin/false
....
I have set up configuration in /etc/adduser.conf to create new users like so ( On my Android box) :
# FIRST_[GU]ID to LAST_[GU]ID inclusive is the range of UIDs of dynamically
# allocated user accounts/groups.
FIRST_UID=100001
LAST_UID=199999
FIRST_GID=100001
LAST_GID=199999
This is in accordance with Android's policy, I let "glibc based" system users still be created from range 100-999 I believe and I modified the audio user on my /etc/passwd and /etc/group files to be of 1005, like it is on Android.
I need to update Android and synchronize it with info regarding my User UIDs as well as with my Daemon or system user UIDs from the glibc stack.
You can read more about this in the book "Embedded Android" by Karim Yaghmour
Sold here
My goal is to get programs like nvlc to work but I need to get UIDs and GIDs synchronized so that Android is aware of my users and the groups they belong to so that for instance, my brainard user with have access to the audio devices.
Also I need to inform Android about Postgres and its membership in the network group so that it can open sockets and allow access to databases. I have disabled PARANOID_NETWORKING in the kernel for the time being, but this hack only serves to make Android as Secure as vanilla Linux, no less. It would be nice to keep the paranoid setting and apply the group permissions to what daemons/users I see fit.
This would make Android a great operating system for public facing servers with such paranoid and fine tuned controls. Imagine having access to Kerberos, LDAP, PAM, or When using you phone as WAP having Radius configured, all of which are available from Debian and other distribution repos free of charge.
I have got this all figured out, I just need to know how to update Android's UID/GID database, which does get updated every time you install an app, so I know it is possible.
Update : (7:08pm June 30, 2014)
After going over the data in the following files ...
/data/system/packages.list
/data/system/packages.xml
/data/system/user/userlist.xml
/data/system/user/0.xml
... I have updated my question to include "how do I interpret it?"
- I think I am going to need to create a custom PAM module and blend Bionic and Glibc into a single C library, they need to compatible with applications on both sides, no exceptions, expect C++ exceptions that is ;p--- I have written a couple rules of thumb-2 :) for myself to follow. I might also need to write a wrapper to popular package management systems like rpm and apt that fakes an apk installation and gives each new deb|rpm package a UID and maybe just sym-link everything into the FHS. That might be the most ideal solution I could go for, though the most work, as each would need a set of permissions in their "manifest", maybe a menu during install an the user can give and take as needs be.
- Does anyone have a good reference that explains the syntax of these files? I am not very well versed with XML, not to mention its use usually depends on the application that interprets it.
- I do understand the packages.list
file with the exception of the null
entry in the last column, can anyone explain that?

I have some apps from F-Droid, installed while on Owner profile. But most of the apps are only visible to Owner (I suppose those are User apps, as the universally visible are System apps).
But how can I make some of these apps visible to other profiles so I can use them with all the features provided with separate user accounts (e.g. compartmentalized app data)? Preferably using only one device, without
ADB
connection to PC, and without re-installation.
There are similar questions on this topic ((https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/96026/if-the-owner-installs-an-app-can-a-secondary-profile-use-it) , (https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/51132/a-specific-app-works-fine-with-tablet-owner-account-but-crashes-for-other-users

The Meta Quest Developer Hub is able to download files in the File Manager tab on Windows, which makes me think, there must be a way to access the folders Pictures, etc. for the secondary user to copy and paste into directly from the computer or to possibly transfer between users without wasting bandwidth.
Filtered with Wireshark filtered by the IP and port of the Meta Quest, it is picking up some shell commands, although I'm not even sure where to begin, as in a matter of seconds, it is over a thousand packets. 1772 packets 261 contain the word "shell" within a few seconds. I tried to force it to redownload a small picture from the file manager tab. Perhaps the process is not a plain text command as some packets I'm not understanding.

Where can I find a table that compares what information is and is-not accessible from an Android app with various isolation methods?
I need to install a piece of malware on my Android device. This is definitely a very dangerous app that was designed by someone powerful, malicious, and actively trying to attack me. I don't want them to learn anything about my device, and I definitely don't want their app to see any data on my device or be able to interact with other apps or files on the device (even with an accidental tap caused by me clicking something after the app spawned maliciously-timed INTENT).
On desktop, I use QubesOS. So I have no issue running and playing with malware. I just fire-up a new DispVM, and I'm very confident that it's isolated. Android, however, leaks so much info to apps that I'm not sure how best to go about this.
I've considered a few isolation methods:
1. Do nothing (default app "sandboxing"),
1. Install in a Work Profile (eg [Insular](https://f-droid.org/packages/com.oasisfeng.island.fdroid/)) ,
1. Install in a new User Profile,
1. Buy (and install it on) a second phone, or
1. Something even better?
Is there any table that lists all of the data that is made available to apps that are compartimienalized with each of these methods?

i have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, running Android 5.0.2
I'm looking for a soluton to the following issue:
All of my family is using the tablet.
So i set up accounts for an admin, and personal accounts for me and my wife, linked to our Google email adresses.
I also set up restricted accounts for the kids. (They are not linked to any email as i remember)
Now one of the kids plays Clash of Clans. Game has been installed on the admin account, and authorization given so it can be used on the kids' restricted account.
It would be cool if the kids could use Google Play to save his game progress online.
But i'm struggling to find out how to set this up.
Currently, Google Play is installed and given access to the kid account.
From kid's account, i can launch Google Play, then launch CoC.
But the button "Google Play Sign In" in CoC does nothing. (It stays red, saying disconnected).
Seems it is still not recognized.
Do i need to have an email address for the kid?
How do i link it to the restricted account?
If this doesn't work, is there any other way i can achieve this?

I believe that Xiaomi Second Space feature is an impllementation of AOSP Android multi-user functionality.
The unique aspect of Xiaomi's implementation is that the phone will launch one or the other of the "spaces" from the lock screen, based SOLELY on the PIN of fingerprint used for authentication on the lock screen. I.e., there is no need to select one or the other space (user) before authenticating to the selected space. It knows which space you want to go to, based on your authentication.
This is an incredibly convenient feature.
I have played with bare Android multi-user functionality on and older vesion of Android (Pixel 3, Android 12). The multi-user implelentation is clunky. The clunkiness is best described by example. I will use the terms User1 for the main user and User2 for the subsequently-created second user profile.
Suppose I sign in as User1, then lock the phone. I now want to sign in as User2.
With my Xiaomi, I can do this by simply entering the PIN for User2 on the lock screen.
With the Pixel 3 / Android 12, the process is as follows:
Remember that my last sign-in was a User1.
Enter the PIN for User1. (If I try entering the PIN for User2, it tells me wrong PIN).
Pull down the shade to select User2.
Enter the PIN for user2.
My question is this:
Are there any other Android phone brands the allow simple switching between users based SOLELY on authentication credentials, without first having to select the user you want to authenticate as?

I have just bought a tablet to be used by the whole family. I downloaded some apps and games, and then set up two more users. Neither have, nor want, a Google account. (In fact our son is too young for a Gmail account according to Google.)
I am completely new to Android, as I have a Windows Phone and Windows computers so please go easy on me. I have a Wikipad with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
The apps I downloaded all appear on my user/profile and there is very little on my son's or my husband's (not even all of the pre-loaded ones, it would appear).
Do I need to download them all again for each user/profile or is there a way of making them show up? One of them (a Flight Simulator game exclusively for my son) was a paid-for app.

I'm looking to disable the option for creating more than one user on my Pixel 6a phone (running Calyx OS).
The standard way to do it seems to be [this](https://www.droidviews.com/remove-guest-account-feature-on-android/) . However, this requires TWRP which is [not available](https://twrp.me/Devices/) for Pixel 6a. Alternately, The BuildProp editor app that they recommend is no longer available on the Play Store.
Is there a way around these limitations?
