Rotate Always On Display 90° On WearOS?

I've been playing with some ADB settings put commands on one of my WearOS watches (Galaxy Watch 7, WearOS 5, OneUI 6), to customize things a bit beyond what the settings app usually allows, and I've come across an odd issue: I wear my watches on the inside of my wrist and prefer them oriented vertically (90° from stock setting, WearOS's "landscape" orientation internally). I have been able to use ADB to rotate the whole system to this 90° angle, and it's great. However, when the ambient mode for Always On Display kicks in, while the rotation is preserved for a moment when the screen first dims, after about two seconds the AOD ambient screen returns to stock 0° ("portrait") orientation. As soon as I tap the screen to wake the device from ambient mode, the rotation returns to 90°, and gestures (swipe up for app tray, down for QS, etc.) are all oriented to that 90° rotation even when the screen is in ambient mode. I know it is not the watch face itself, because I have tried multiple and they all do this, but the issue is not present when using the stock 180° rotation mode (it will not flip back to 0° when ambient). While reading about the issue I found some people discussing performing a similar trick on WearOS 3 and they stated the AOD/ambient mode *stayed* rotated at 90°... I am not sure if this is something specific to Samsung OneUI versions of WearOS so I did a little digging with adb shell pm list packages and it seems like Samsung's implementation of AOD/ambient is named com.samsung.android.watch.watchface.perpetual. Is anyone aware of what might be causing this glitch, or does anyone by chance know of a way (ADB or otherwise) to force an individual specific app to a particular orientation so I can try resolving this? If native methods won't work, does anyone have any thoughts about the potential to mod this apk to change it's default orientation in it's properties?

When watching video in fullscreen in landscape and plugging in my charger, the video changes to portrait. When unplugging my charger it goes back to landscape again. Why is this happening? I'm using a Zenfone 9 (Android 14) and have tested with Firefox (watch YouTube fullscreen) and DRTV app watching in fullscreen with same results. I remember having encountered the same issue on my last phone as well, but haven't tested yet (Sony XZ2C, Android 10). (At first I thought it was an intermitten issue with Youtube or Firefox, but then I figured out it was related to when the phone was charging and reproduceable with other apps.)

How to change the default (currently landscape) orientation to portrait in the OS? Is there a setting in Android that determines default orientation or does this require a hack? I have root access.

I have bought an Android-compatible pen tab (XP-Pen Deco Mini7) (7 x 4) for my Samsung A7 Lite (8.37 x 4.91). And the weird thing about all such pen tabs is that they only support vertical orientation. If you try to put the system horizontally, a horizontal line becomes vertical and vice versa; and if I rotate, the pen tab as well the working area gets reduced to a small size. My best guess is that the pen tab maps 7 x 4 to the 8 x 4 of the system display, so when I rotate the system, it tries to map 7 x 4 to the new 4 x 8 of the system and hence is only able to use 4 x 4 of the display. I am using the pen tab for note-taking and PDF editing and figure that an 8-inch width will be good for reading. My current solution to this issue is to rotate the PDF, keep the system in portrait mode, and rotate the pen tablet and device. Image It would be a LOT better if I could simply rotate only the app and NOT the system. Established apps like Rotation | Orientation Manager by Pranav Pandey rotate the whole SYSTEM. Do you have any suggestions? tl;dr, I want this: Image

Other (more modern) apps use Sensor.TYPE_ROTATION_VECTOR however and according to [the Android documentation](https://source.android.com/docs/core/interaction/sensors/sensor-types#rotation_vector) , this combines data from the orientation sensors aswell as the magnetic field sensor. How can I disable the magnetic field sensor entirely or prevent Android from using its data for Sensor.TYPE_ROTATION_VECTOR?

But every time I turn off the screen for a little while, the system overrides my apps and the phone is back to portrait! Any way to **FORBID** Android to do that ? I also noticed an orientation-related animated icon on the corner, next to the app history button, when the screen orientation is in disaccord to the accelerometer. This clearly indicates that Android added a (stupid) feature. Rooted I believe the solution might be to prevent system to see the state of the accelerometer, but without compromising everything else. . Hated this Pie ! Not only has this problem, as it also overrides my screen brightness. And they completely misorganized the settings and the volume menu from the previous version.

I currently use an crufty old app from F-droid which overrides the screen orientation using an invisible overlay (I believe) and that works rather well. However, when returning to a forced landscape app from the lockscreen (which is in landscape), android rotates the screen to portrait which I don't want. I use Spotify and it believes that it knows better than me how I'd like to use my phone and wants to display its playback control screen portrait mode. I obviously need to return to this screen often to change tracks etc. Is there a better way of doing this? I imagine you'd need something integrated into the SystemUI to get the unlock transition smooth. I'm not afraid of getting my hands a little dirty with Magisk modules or patches to AOSP components themselves (I build my system from source) but I don't think I'm in a position to be coding something like that myself yet.

I am a complete noob with Android so please forgive me. I am tasked with installing Android on a Custom Board from China. Its InsydeH20 BIOS and something called "BayTrail". Basically, the board is installed inside a Hand Dryer (dont ask). The concept is to install an APP (which is already available), that links to a website, users can play Advertisements through the screen by creating them on the website, the playlist syncs to the app, voila ads play on the Android Board, nifty concept, in reality its a nightmare to get working. I have tried numerous versions of Android, the App best works on 4.4 but I have it working on 7.1 Nougat. The main issues I have are: Teamviewer Host (needs to be installed for future support of the units. This, I have only got working on 1 version of Android (Prime OS) Screen Orientation - this is my main issue, the screen is 1080x1920 resolution. using a screen rotation app (on Phoenix OS v1.5.0) I can get the screen to display in LANDSCAPE at 1920x108 - great, App works, screen is landscape, Teamviewer DOES NOT work, bummer! On Prime OS - the rotation app just does not work, it sort of goes in landscape, but in portrait view? The screen is 1080x1920 across the MIDDLE of the screen, with black bars at the top and bottom. Please see this link for screen shot. But TeamViewer works, and the unit seems more stable on Prime OS, so I think once I have the screen sorted, it will work fine, hopefully? Things I have already tried. **ADB Build Prop adding these lines, and rebooting - does absolutely nothing!** ro.sf.hwrotation=0 **ADB Shell - adding these lines**
`
 1. adb shell root
 2. adb shell remount
 3. adb shell setprop persist.demo.hdmirotation portrait
 4. adb shell setprop persist.demo.hdmirotationlock false
 5. adb shell setprop persist.demo.singledisplay true
 6. adb reboot
 7. adb shell wm size 1920x1080
` This is how I have got it to where it is now, but the thing will just not rotate and use LANDSCAPE and FULL SCREEN, like it does on Phoenix OS. Sorry, if I have repeated myself, hopefully the screen shot will give you a better idea of where I am at, what I need. And hopefully someone can help? Currently running Prime OS Standard at this link - Prime OS Link

I am using Android 11 (LineageOS 18.1), and I'd like to prevent Android from accidentally switching to portrait mode, like when I rotate the direction of gravity field. Camera app seem to be resetting phone orientation against all preferences. I tried: 1. setting rotation settings in android settings - *worked, but restarting camera overrides this setting, reverting back to portrait* 2. to disable sensors in developer mode - *worked, but doesn't preserve state between system reboots* 3. app "Rotation Lock + Landscape" from F-Droid - *worked, but restarting camera overrides this app, reverting back to portrait* After all (1.,2.,3.) together, the mode came back to portrait after restart, and I started getting error "open camera error id = 0" upon trying to open camera, which only disappeared after factory reset... :/ So, none of that fully worked. I want to permanently prevent all apps from switching screen orientation based on gyro, and the phone not resetting orientation during startup: set the orientation "in stone" (permanently, and so that I could only manually switch between it).

But it still shows the bootanimation in landscape and after the animation is finished, the display rotates(with rotate animation) to portrait. How can I avoid this rotation and change the default/natural orientation before boot animation? Is it something related to SurfaceFlinger? I would also like to point to this article in android website. pre rotation in hardware composer

On the Acer Iconia A200, when you change the orientation of the screen, the function of the volume rocker flips. In landscape mode, with the volume rocker on the right side and at the top, you find that 'down' on the rocker turns down the volume. Now, flip the device 90 degrees left to a portait orientation, with the volume rocker on the top left. Now the same press that was 'down' before is 'right' and it turns the volume UP. In other words, the action of the volume rocker is sensitive to the orientation of the device. I haven't found any way to control this yet in the settings - is there any way to change this behavior? I'll eventually get used to it, but for the moment it's driving me batty. Added: After seeing Zuul's answer talking about the gpio_keys.kl file, AND getting a bluetooth keyboard, I did some experimenting. When using a bluetooth keyboard, the bluetooth vol up/down buttons are independent of tablet orientation. So either some bit of software checks where the key is coming from and remaps or not as appropriate, OR the swap is happening at some lower layer (i.e. before it becomes a key code).

I want to do this to keep the status bar icons in the notch region when in landscape mode. I can see that showing time would be problematic but every other icon could just be rotated in place. I wouldn't mind if the time was also rotated in place, e.g. For 10:23 you have 1 0 ·· 2 3 It would free up more vertical screen space which is already scarce in landscape mode. Moreover, if your device has a notch then it's a much better use of the screen space than just blacking it out. I was wondering if it's possible to do it in the user land at all or if only the OS can take these decisions and we'd have to wait for long for such a feature to appear, if it does at all. If it's upto the OS then where are such feature requests entertained? I am using android P.

I recently wiped my phone and reinstalled the same custom, rooted, stock ROM. Since then, when I rotate the phone, Chrome rotates the display (as expected) but then refreshes the page. The loading bar goes across, a YouTube video will stop playing, and depending on the page the scroll position is lost. Before, the display would simply rotate in place without issue. I have never seen this behavior before and I cannot find any relevant setting to change it, including in chrome://flags. What is causing Chrome to refresh when I change the screen orientation?

I installed Android onto my laptop so that I could play a game called Psych with my brother.
When I launch it, the screen is shifted to the right and the mouse is limited to the area of portrait orientation (see image). <img src=" class="img-fluid rounded" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto; margin: 10px 0;" loading="lazy"> My theory is that the app is a portrait app, but when it is displayed on a horizontal screen (like a Chromebook), it will stretch out these edges so that it doesn't look bad and the user can just click the important things in the center (that is why the mouse is limited to the portrait area). But for some reason, when it launches on the computer, it will be forced to start displaying from where the portrait apps start from, causing it to shift over.

Please inform me, if my theory is correct or if it doesn't work for another reason, what the reason is, and most importantly, tell me how to fix it. Please ask me if there is any other information I should provide.
