When I compose a new message in Gmail on my Android phone I'm offered several suggestions for the recipient (i.e. for the email's To: field) via an autocomplete function. These are often very old/unknown contacts which I'd like to no longer see as autocomplete suggestions, but I can't yet work out how to clear this list. The contacts suggested appear to have come from an old list of "Other" contacts, i.e. people that I've contacted infrequently and who were not actual contacts I've added to my contact list. These only show up when I compose a new message in Gmail on my phone, and the autocomplete works as expected when on a non-Android device (laptop). My assumption is that the Gmail autocomplete function is reading these outdated contacts from a list stored somewhere in a file on my phone which is impervious to the contact sync process or somehow not being cleared as expected otherwise -- I've tried all manner of syncing phone contacts, deleting old/other contacts outside of Android, etc. but no joy so far. An idea I have is to somehow search Android's filesystem for a file that contains the unwanted contacts and if found then wipe that file clean. Is this reasonable, and if so can anyone suggest guidance that'll make this less of a wild goose chase? My phone details: Model: Nexus 5X Android version: 7.1.2 Baseband version: M8994F-2.6.37.2.21 Kernel version: 3.10.73-ge570678 Build version: N2G47F Thanks in advance for any help or insight.

I just acquired the new Huawei Honor 8 from China (international version), but I have a few issues with the contacts. When I synchronize the contacts from my Microsoft account, I only retrieve 16 contacts in my list (whereas I have 300+ contacts). I checked the parameters, they are not hidden, it just managed to synchronize only 16 contacts. I decided to migrate my Microsoft account contacts to my Google account, so I can try to synchronize the Google contacts on my phone. Once I managed to do it on the Google website from my computer, I found a bad surprise in the contact app : there is no option to synchronize Google contacts. HiCloud, Outlook, Facebook messenger, Linkedin, Skype and WeChat are the only options here. Have I missed something ? Do I need an extra app to do this ? I'm wondering if this issue could be related to the Chinese ROM shipped on my phone, would you recommend to install a new ROM ? **Edit** : I have installed "Google sync contacts" by directly downloading the APK. Now i can see the Google account in the list of the synchronized accounts in the contact app. But, after having double checked that the synchronization is activated for this account and a reboot, still 0 contact from Google in the list.

I use phone(s) with the stock Google Contacts app. Enabling Extreme Battery Saver on Pixel causes the Contacts app to pause (by default). If I enable Extreme Battery Saver on Pixel, and let it pause the Contacts app, does it pause automatic sync of Contacts? Could this help save battery usage? I am considering changing Extreme Battery Saver settings to allow the Contacts app. Could this increase battery usage? It does not have an immediate visible effect on the toggle at Settings > Passwords > my-account@gmail.com (Google) > Account sync > Contacts. I can also manually pause the Contacts app "for the rest of the day". Or I can disable it. I assume these have the same effect. My usual habit is to use the Contacts app, because it allows me to view a subset of contacts who e.g. have phone numbers. AFAICS, the Google Phone app has decided to show all contacts across all Google Accounts, including those without phone numbers, and cannot be reconfigured.

I’ve been facing an annoying issue on my Android phone when it comes to managing contacts. Whenever I save multiple contacts with the same name (e.g., John), they automatically get merged into one contact. This makes it super difficult to differentiate between them, especially when I need to call or message a specific person. Even worse, I’ve tried adding notes to the contacts to help distinguish between them, but it doesn’t help. Whenever a new number with the same name is saved, it gets added to the contact with the note, making the notes useless for identifying the contact. However, when I access my contacts on my laptop or through a browser, everything seems fine. No merging happens, and the contacts remain separate. Has anyone else experienced this? How can I stop Android from merging contacts with the same name? I’d appreciate any advice on how to fix or work around this issue, as it’s making my contact management a real mess!

ZTE Blade A54 phone comes out of the box with Google applications for Phone, Contacts and Messages. Yesterday I downloaded alternative applications from Fossify and set them as default ones. Now I heared the phone vibrating. It seems that it rebooted without any obvious reason. After it booted, I found out that Phone, Contacts and Messages applications were resetted back to the Google's ones. I thought that it was an automatic system update, but according to the log, the last system update was installed a month ago. How to find out which application / service triggered the restoration? Was it Google Play? Was it some system guard service? Howwto find it out?

I'm using Android 11 on my rooted Pixel 5 phone. It turns out that the Contacts app under this OS does not allow access of device-only contacts. I can only access contacts via a shared Google account. Furthermore, if I go to Settings and try to disable network permissions for the Contacts app, it turns out that the Permissions settings are greyed out, and I cannot alter any permissions for the Contacts app. I know that I can disable contacts sync-ing, but I want to go further. I want my contacts to be totally and completely disconnected from Google. I am happy to use an alternative contacts app that accesses device-only contacts, but that app would also have to be able to feed my contact information to all SMS and phone apps that I might use. Does anyone know how I can ... (1) ... go to Google and remove all my contacts there without this causing local contacts on my device to also be removed? (2) ... break all (!!!) connections between Google's cloud-based contact storage and my local, device-only contact storage. (3) ... reliably allow all device-only contacts to be available to other apps, including (but not limited to!) SMS apps and phone apps? I know I can manage this by switching from standard Android to something like microg. But I'm hoping that there is some way that I could still stick with Android 11 and have device-only contacts with no sharing with Google in any manner. I know that under Android, contacts are managed via a Contacts Provider service. Does anyone know of a way to disable the standard Android Contacts Provider service and somehow install some sort of alternate Contacts Provider service which would allow the use of device-only contacts and which could be configured to never, never, ***ever*** (!!!!!) share any contacts-related information with Google? Thank you in advance for any thoughts and suggestions.

I want to set the ringtone for each contact with a particular label on my Pixel 2 (Android 11). Labels are a thing that contacts can have in the default android contacts app (from Google). There seems to be a lot of answers out there about doing this, but only when the contacts app has something *specifically* named "groups". There is nothing called "groups" in the default Google contacts app, but I think that labels are basically the same thing as "groups".

I was looking to add a second account to my Android phone running Android version 12. The issue that I keep running into is that as soon as I sign in the contacts from that account are synced and my call records get all messed up. There are some tutorials on the web that suggest that I turn the wifi (Internet) off as soon as I sign-in and then go to settings and disable contact sync. I did try it but it does not work as the contacts are synced before I can turn off the interent. I am looking for a permanent way and not a work around. Thank you

I cannot get Google Contacts to display my contacts in alphabetical order sorted by surname, with surname shown first. The problem has existed since about a fortnight after I bought the phone almost a year ago although the operating system and the Contacts app have obviously been updated since then. I'm currently running Android 11.1 (Oppo ColorOS 11.1) with (Google) Contacts 3.41.1.361694705 . The settings show - Display -> Sort by -> Surname - Name format -> Surname first - Edit contacts -> Default account for new contacts -> Device ... but despite the settings, Contacts shows surname first (as wanted) but always sorts in first-name order! This is true whether I access Contacts directly, or though the Phone interface. Curiously, if, from within Signal Messenger, I go to attach a contact card to a Signal message, then Contacts displays the contacts correctly (i.e., in alphabetical order by surname, with surname shown first). And just to be clear, this is ***not*** the Signal Messenger contact list I'm talking about here; this is the complete Google Contacts list. What is the likely cause of the problem? Is this a well-known bug? Where is the sorting done? On the device, as one would hope, or by having Google do it?

I have Nexus 5x running Android 8.1 Oreo with Google Contacts 3.2.5.222172751. I had a friend's name misspelled in my contact list and wanted to fix it. Ordinarily (and on all my other contacts), there is a blue edit button in the bottom right of the interface that displays contact info, but for this contact, it's missing. When I open the contact from the Google search bar (Google app), it shows the words "read-only" at the top. I think I created the contact in the normal way (rather than through another app). Yes, I could delete the contact and create a new one. That would be quite easy, but that's not the answer I'm looking for. How do I fix the contact settings? Or if somehow not possible, what in the world? What is a "view only" contact?
